Joshua Hedley Announces New Western Swing Album “All Hat”

Mr. Jukebox. The Mayor of Lower Broadway. The Singin’ Professor of Country & Western. Whatever you want to call him, Joshua Hedley has been a radical preservationist of actual country music for years, holding court in a continuing residency at Robert’s Western World on Lower Broadway in Nashville, helping to beat back the rising tide of bad music.
Everything that Joshua Hedley does is country. For him, it’s not a question of genres, but eras. In 2018, he awoke the Countrypolitan era with Mr. Jukebox. In 2022, he was ahead of the game by evoking ’90s country with Neon Blue, including numerous songs co-written by some kid named Zach Top. Hedley could’ve returned to that well again since ’90s country is so hot, but he’s always stayed one step ahead of the game in rekindling the past. So on his new album All Hat out October 24th on New West Records, Hedley’s going Western Swing.
Hedley’s no stranger to the subgenre. In fact, his first ever record was a tribute to Western Swing the singer and fiddle player recorded when he was only 15 years old. At that point, he’d already been playing fiddle for seven years.
“I found a copy of it recently, and it’s not as bad as I expected. I’d only been singing in public for about two weeks, but I might’ve been a better fiddle player then than I am now,” Hedley says. “I didn’t grow up playing in garage bands. I grew up at the goddamned VFW hall. I grew up playing with guys in their fifties and sixties. When I first heard Asleep at the Wheel and their Bob Wills tribute, it blew my mind that there was a band out there still playing this kind of music.”

That’s why when Hedley decided to make a new Western Swing album, he went directly to the source for help. All Hat was produced by Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel, with numerous members of the band participating in the recordings as well, including well-respected fiddler Jason Roberts.
“Obviously [Ray] was in the producer role and he did produce the shit out of this record, but a lot of it was him just letting us cut loose and see what happens,” Hedley explains. “We’d work out a song and he’d step in with some suggestions. It was amazing to see how it’s done not only in real time, but from one of the greats. I don’t think he knows just how much he was teaching me.”
Though when some think of Western Swing, they might thing of a stuffy, outmoded, fuddy duddy version of country, that’s not the approach Hedley takes to it. “At its core Western Swing is just dance music,” he says. “Bob Wills didn’t play theatres; he played dance halls. The music is for dancing, and that’s what I wanted to come through on these songs.”
Who knows, perhaps Hedley will be the spearhead for the revitalization of Western Swing as a popular art form, similar to what he did for ’90s country. Why is bluegrass such a massive music category, and Western Swing so under-represented? Hedley will do his part in presenting the beauty of the art form come October 24th. New song “Fresh Hot Biscuits” is out now.

“Why is bluegrass such a massive music category, and Western Swing so under-represented?”
Because it’s not all in G.
(ducking)
Also, swing dancing requires touching.

The actual answer to that is that western swing was dance music that relied on large dance floors and crowds and fairly big bands, and it eventually became unsustainable as a business when the dance craze went away. We need a new dance craze goddamn it
Bluegrass can be a pretty big band but you can downsize it too as little as a duo and still do gigs so it’s a little more resilient. Also bluegrass functioned in an existing ecosystem of festivals, fiddle contests, and other cultural stuff that was a little more long-lasting than the western swing craze.

So great to hear about this new album! There is still so much good Western Swing out there from Asleep at the Wheel, Brennen Leigh, Drake Milligan (“Goin’ Down Swingin” is a great song he did with Vince Gill & the Time Jumpers) now this one! Looking forward to it!

I rather like this style of music.
TBH, as a loyal metal fan (in addition to Country) I have been trying to get into the recent trends for heavy music; but the full-on deathcore/ultra-heavy/high-speed riffing and growling vocals are sort-of proving difficult for me.
Whereas….I know I could enjoy an album like “All Hat” without trying too hard, and also not pissing off my wife and daughters. They’re not remotely into metal at all.
Yeah, the Western Swing is a pretty cool and pleasant style IMO.

Metal Swing and Death Swing should be a sub-genre.

If you guys want metal and Country together, check out Saddle of Southern Darkness. they are absolute shredders on country instruments and it sometimes goes into metal territory but not too much. Really great interesting alt country and a super fun live show

Kyle Eldridge is an absolute shredder in a style of Western swimming that’s very adjacent to hillbilly bop and rockabilly, the type of thing that Deke Dickerson does. Kyle started out as a metal guitar player but thought he couldn’t sing metal with his kind of nasally voice so he eventually switched over to our music. I’m sorry for metal because I’m sure he was a phenomenal player but he’s so God damn good at the corny retro western swing stuff.

I wrote the first article on Kyle Eldridge, it was a cover article in Blue Suede News magazine, many years back. Interviewed him extensively. He talked about riding around in his car around Dayton Ohio with his buddies and playing ” cool music” to pacify them. When he was alone, he would rip those cds out and play Merle Travis and Joe Maphis and Bob Wills. Hes an old school soul in a young man’s body. There are so few people on the planet doing what he does, and with Deke abandoning the double neck Mosrites entirely, it leaves Kyle as that guy. One of the issues with those double necks is they are crazy heavy, not good on the neck and back. When Kyle had his built, he had the luthier hollow it out, to make it lighter.
I remain a big fan of him. Probably seen him live 15 times. For various reasons, the young up and coming shredders know nothing about Larry Collins and and Joe Maphis. Hes the lone guy carrying that torch. And yes Kyle has had a Western swing band in the past, and he plays those jazz chords as good as anybody.

He and Brennen Leigh were both with Asleep at the Wheel when they toured the UK a year or so ago. This is another album to look forward to. I am sure it will be good. There is a new Asleep at the Wheel album in a few weeks. Good news.

Neon Blue is one of my all-time favorite albums, I listen to it all the time. Yes, I am of that generation, but the music on that album, especially since as you note was written by Zach Top, is just classic. “Counting All My Tears” brings me to tears every time I hear it. The world has never paid enough attention to Hedley, which is a travesty

” he’s always stayed one step ahead of the game in rekindling the past.” I hope he’s right on this prediction. I enjoy Western Swing (in small to medium doses), so some new material from different artists would be good.

check out what Carolyn Sills Combo did with western swing if you like newer versions of it.

It feels like I’ve been listening to Neon Blue forever while waiting for new music for Mr. Jukebox Hedley. Very excited for this project, no matter the sound and genre under the massive umbrella of country music he decides to draw upon.
This album will likely jump right into my regular rotation if Fresh Hot Biscuits is indicative of the entire project.

I once made a post listing modern Western swing bands. It’s out of date at this point but here ya go:

You can also check out who plays at the Western Swingout (crosses over to rockabilly a lot there) and other events land see who’s played them in the past.

so so so good. Great videos on youtube too.

And my friend Flavio plays pedal steel on Joshua’s record as well!

My only complaint with Hedley is he has a kind of thin, shakey voice. I think this is a common issue in independent music genres, but more easily masked if your singer is buried under 8 layers of shoegaze reverb or autotune and rap. Western swing is harmonically rich music that really needs a strong, rich voice upfront, which I don’t think Hedley has on the sampled cut, and it weakens the melodic impact of the song. That being said, Freddy Powers and Willie Nelson made it work….

Bring that good sound back, Joshua Hedley!!!!! LOVE IT!! want more of it!!
August 9, 2025 @ 1:43 pm
Who’s the other fiddler in the biscuits video?
August 11, 2025 @ 6:52 am
I think I could take this dude more seriously if he didn’t do the constant rhinestone cowboy cosplay schtick. A shallow judgement, I confess.
