Dallas Burrow Announces New Album “Modern Day Vagabond”

Singer, songwriter, and underdog Dallas Burrow has always been one on the outside of the popular cliques in music, and has always had to prove himself and earn every bit of attention and credibility he’s received. Over time though, he’s accrued these very things from fans and fellow musicians alike in large sums to the point where he’s now one of the more respected performers in Central Texas.
Dallas has done this not only through his music, but through his leadership in the realm of songs through the work with his Red Bird Listening Room venue in New Braunfels, TX, and leading songwriter rounds at important places like the Ameripolitan Awards, and Willie Nelson’s Luck Reunion. All you have to do is look at the list of collaborators on his upcoming album to see just how much respect he has among his fellow songwriters.
Called Modern Day Vagabond, the album will be released on September 25th via Forty Below Records. It was produced by Red Dirt legend Mike McClure, and multi Grammy-winning producer/engineer Adam Odor at Yellow Dog Studios in Texas. It includes musical contributions from McClure and Odor, Kullen Fox from Charley Crockett’s Blue Drifters on organ, along with Mark Tokach and Larry Chaney on guitar, and Cameron Martin on drums.

But it’s really the guest appearances on the album that make it so remarkable, include legendary singer/songwriter Susan Gibson, Kelly Willis, and Kelley Mickwee, Will Sexton, Lloyd Maines, as well as Donny Silverman on flute who plays on the final song on the album, a cover of “Rake” from Townes Van Zandt. Silverman also played with Townes back in the day, and as Dallas Burrow explained on Episode 4 of The Hook, Townes and Burrow’s dad were blood brothers. His dad also appears on the album.
Dallas Burrow will celebrate the release of the record on September 4th at a Gruene Hall show with the West Texas Exiles. Dallas being booked at Gruene comes with a bit of irony since in his younger and rowdier days he was permanently banned from the premises, and twice. So in some respects, holding an album release show there is coming full circle.
Ahead of the album, Dallas Burrow has released the song “Underdog” (listen below).
“Like the character Dally from ‘The Outsiders,’ a rebel through and through, I’ve always felt like a little bit of an outsider, an outlier, an underdog, but I always found that, on some level, to be a point of pride,” Dallas Burrow says. “It gives you a unique perspective when you’re on the outside looking in. That’s the basic spirit of the song, though it was also inspired somewhat by my own experiences within the music business, where so many people are telling you who they think you are, and how things ought to be.”

I’m really looking forward to this, and already pre-ordered the vinyl & CD. Blood Borthers is one of my favorite albums of the last 5 years, and it always surprised me that it flew under the radar. Hopefully this release will gain Burrow some greater, overdue, exposure.
