Album Review – Sunny Sweeney’s “Rhinestone Requiem”

Honky Tonk (#510.2) on the Country DDS.
Oh hell yeah. Pour this out over rocks or take it straight. Find some skins and roll it up. Crush it and line it up on the back of a CD case. Cook it up in a spoon and load it up in a needle. However you take it, go hard into Sunny Sweeney’s Rhinestone Requiem, and forgo the moderation. It just might cause you to suffer a honky tonk relapse. But it’s so worth it.
Sorry to be triggering to any teetotalers out there, but Rhinestone Requiem is Sunny Sweeney in her most purified form. Time and pressure, endless touring and multiple divorces, it’s all conspired to forge Sunny Sweeney into a genuine honky tonk maven. All that time spinning records on her SiriusXM shows via Outlaw Country and Willie’s Roadhouse probably didn’t hurt either, putting Sweeney it touch with all those old legends.
Sure, Sunny did her stint in Nashville on Big Machine Records. She played the game, recorded pop-leaning songs trying to get the radio to pay attention. But that’s all in the past now, and through the second half of her career, she’s only continued to get more and more country, until all that’s left is Sweeney’s strong honky tonk influences. Co-produced with her right hand man Harley Husbands, Rhinestone Requiem would work perfectly as an audio encyclopedia entry for classic honky tonk country.
It’s not just the sound, it’s the songs. Sweeney co-wrote eight of the ten tracks, and there are some real gems in here you’d swear were classics from back in the ’70s. “Houston Belongs To Me” co-written with Brennen Leigh is the perfect specimen of heartbreak country, utilizing geography to craft a story most all can relate to. “I Drink Well with Others” and “Half Lit in 3/4 Time” are excellent examples of country drinking songs that would have been big hits back in a better era of country radio.

To sing it with conviction and honesty, you need to have lived it. “Diamonds and Divorce Decrees” is one of those songs for Sunny Sweeney, ripped straight from her biography. “As Long as There’s a Honky Tonk” might as well be a documentary of Sweeney’s life, talking about walking away from the “Big Machine,” playing on the Grand Ole Opry, and always being at home on the road and playing for folks in local haunts.
Sunny Sweeney could spend her time being envious of the artist who made it to arenas and mansions. She did her time opening for big acts, and got her taste of that for sure. But instead, she’s embraced the honky tonk way of life, not just in sound, but in attitude. The songs of Rhinestone Requiem are of the honky tonks, and for the honky tonks, and the people that love to hear country music in their local watering hole where the performers are right there in front of you, and real.
Classic and honky tonk country are definitely coming back into favor thanks to the new, younger crop of performers coming up and embracing the sound and influences. We’ve seen some more established artists misread this moment, and decide to zig while country is zagging. Not Sunny. If you’re into the revivalist sounds of Zach Top and Jake Worthington, there’s no reason you won’t find appeal in Rhinestone Requiem too.
You could regard Sunny Sweeney as a veteran of the game. But listening through Rhinestone Requiem, the boldness of its audio flavors, and the passion brought to the songwriting, it gives you a sense that her career is just now in its peak. She’s making some of the most compelling country music of her career, and songs that will withstand the test of time because classic country like this is timeless.
Go Sunny!
8.2/10

Idk where else to put this, so apologies for the non-sequitur. But Smilo & The Ghost released a cover of Black Sabbath’s Paranoid and it rips.
On topic, thanks for the reviews Trig.

This is a MUST listen to album for those with a country music soul. It’s got everything you need emotionally and spiritually. She’s the country Stevie Nicks and we should all love her for that!
Ps your score is wrong Trigger. This is as close to a 10 as youre gonna get! Only issue with it is it isnt 14+ songs long! WE WANT MORE SUNNY!

Lol but multiple songwriters are writing down the term “Honky Tonk relapse” after reading this article.
Sunny Sweeney is just the best.

Halfway through “Houston Belongs to Me” I already knew it’d be a top tier song I’d return to for years to come. Thanks for pointing out the Brennen Leigh co-write – makes perfect sense as those ladies are two of the best in the business, period, and have done great work together in the past.
I’m sure I’m not alone in seeing (if only) Sunny and a peak George Strait doing half of this album’s songs on stage together – singing opposite sides of heartbreak and movin’ on. Simply incredible.

Always liked her. Great songwriter.

One of the hardest workin’ women in showbusiness! I have been a fan since Myspace! haha She always puts on a good show. And if you hang around, she is the nicest to talk with.

I’m pretty introverted and don’t like to talk to folks but her and I stood around and chatted after her show for a while. She was so friendly and easy to talk with.
And, on first listen, this album is great. I’m sure it’s gonna be rewarding with multiple listens.

Love some Sunny Sweeney! I haven’t taken this CD out of my player since I got it! She’s as real and country as they come. Puts on a heck of live show too! I think my favorites are “Waiting For a Reason to Stay”, “Traveling On”, and “Houston Belongs to Me” The whole album is great though!

Sunny Sweeney has the goods and she delivers. This one will get me through the las hot months of summer.

Ya know, last week I talked about some records just being immediately likeable on the first spin, and that’s what Sunny Sweeney albums are. You know what you’re gonna get, and it’s gonna be good! She has great co writers and a right hand man in Harley Husbands to help produce and make sure everything’s perfect. Love the variety of tempos as well. Definitely rotation worthy!

One a few artists that I will buy the album (I still like a physical copy) without a second thought.

I made the same decision about 3 songs in

She is the real deal Sunny and Harley have made a classic Honky tonk album and they are even better live long live the Honky Tonk Queen .
August 1, 2025 @ 2:22 pm
This might be the best honkytonk album I’ve heard in several years

The diamonds song sounds great, but I am not to crazy about the drink well with others song. The music seems to drown out her voice and that is a big turn off for me. I am sitting on the fence on whether to get this album or not.
August 1, 2025 @ 4:45 pm
She is the best. Excited to see her live next week!!!!

Listened to this today. Really wonderful. And yeah as trigger says it’s weird that this isn’t mainstream. Like this isn’t obtuse or avant garde. This sounds like something that should be played on the radio. Weird that something this pleasing isn’t the mainstream

I thought she was canceled because of her bluejeans ad?
August 1, 2025 @ 5:57 pm
Sounds great. Fits country music like a pair of good old jeans.

Apple Music lies. It says this album is 33 minutes long, but you keep replaying each song over and over because the stories are so raw and heartbreaking and soon two hours have gone by and you’re on song nine. And let me tell you, songs nine and ten are so good you don’t want them to ever end. Get this record and connect to all that is hard and beautiful and real about what country music can be, but is only rarely and in the most capable hands.

I think this review hits the nail on the head. Sweeney has always had some good songs on her albums, but for awhile she seemed to be straddling the fence between Texas Country and Mainstream success. But for the last couple albums Sweeney has hoped off that fence and landed solidly on the side of traditional Texas and Honky Tonk.
Like her last album Married Alone, Rhinestone Requiem once again finds Sweeney at her best. She has matured into one of the top country artists out there in my opinion, and I’m loving this album. A couple of these songs were featured on the album Recorded Live At The Machine Stop Studio, but it’s good to get more refined versions here. I Drink Well With Others was a favorite from that release.
It’s good to see Sunny Sweeney on a roll.

Sunny Sweeny was accidentally sneaky one time, she saw it all from a table away
August 3, 2025 @ 9:21 am
I have seen Sunny in concert at least six or seven times, and she always kills. Good songwriter, good songs and she is funny! Loving this release.
August 3, 2025 @ 7:06 pm
Listened to this a couple times now. Really well made album. Review is right on

It’s so nice to hear new material from Sunny Sweeney. She has the perfect voice for country music and the attitude to back it up. Her songs are fun to listen to and always put me in a good mood. Keep up the good work, Sunny!

Great album. I hope her turn on Last Hard Bible spurs interest in Kasey Chambers’ catalog. Too often overlooked as one of the originals in this genre.

Sunny Sweeney. returns to her roots, ! Real Country and Honky Tonk at its best ! welcome aboard again.
August 6, 2025 @ 12:14 pm
This might be a good one to nominate for the Grammys traditional country category. Can’t think of many honkytonk or neotraditional albums better than this in the last few years.

She finally did it. I just listened to the two songs here and downloaded the entire album. I’ve followed her for years and was so happy to see her record Chris walls song i feel like hank williams tonight a couple of years ago. They worked together around austin for several years, and this looks to be the result of working with him and hanging out at a lot of tonks.
August 19, 2025 @ 9:24 am
Finally got to this one. And now I’ve got it on repeat. Classic country is so good.
August 21, 2025 @ 10:02 am
I’ve been a fan since I first heard “Next Big Nothin” years and years ago on XM radio, I forget the name of the program but it was before it became Willie’s Place. She’s been one of my go tos on the internet jukeboxes ever since

Excellent CD ! I play non stop in the car. Sunny don’t forget your friends to the north. We would support a cross country tour!
