Album Review – William Clark Green’s “Watterson Hall”

What exactly to make of William Clark Green has always been an interesting question. Clearly he’s one of the leaders and headliners in the greater Texas music scene, and deservedly so. In Lubbock and West Texas, it’s probably not out-of-bounds to characterize him as a sort of Texas country legend already, even if one prominent country outlet recently asked if he might be the next breakout star, 11 years after he had a Texas music hit with “Next Big Thing.”
William Clark Green has some great songs, a knack for composing strong melodies, is easy to like, and hard to hate. But his sound has always been a little too soft for true country, but not nearly fluffy enough for pop. It finds that safe zone in Texas music similar to Wade Bowen and Randy Rogers where it’s commercially accessible, while still delivering more substance than mainstream country radio stuff.
It’s never been about whether William Clark Green is good or bad as much as sometimes he’s hard to define, or difficult to distinguish when there’s so much music out there. He doesn’t come with a signature sound, or a unique style of writing. He’s pragmatic with his musical approach. He’s William Clark Green.
Enter his latest album Watterson Hall. It probably won’t compete for Album of the Year. You’re not going to hear his writing referenced in the same conversations as selections from Evan Felker or even Cody Jinks. Yet by really personalizing the songs on this album, taking a few years to re-align his compass, and becoming a father and a purposeful life partner creates a center of gravity that makes this record feel like an achievement and a career retrenching.

It’s a tried and true maxim of music that too many artists tend to get away from: the more personal your writing, the more resonant it is with an audience. When you start with the audience of one (yourself), that is when the audience of many can feel the inspiration behind the song. This is a recurring experience listening to Watterson Hall, including with the title track, as well as “Love To Fight Another Day” and “I Am The Kite.” The songs “Where The Wild Things Are” and “Something You Would Die For” are about being a father.
The word “inspired” is what comes to mind when listening to Watterson Hall. And even though the album’s namesake dance hall is located just east of Austin near the town of Red Rock, William Clark Green makes sure to put his signature West Texas stamp on the work with the song “Whole Lotta Lubbock.” Though it might sound like a cliché to compliment an album as “mature,” that’s certainly an appropriate characterization here.
At the same time, William Clark Green is going to William Clark Green. “Good Time” could be a hit on mainstream country radio. An no, that’s not meant as a compliment. Though “Drinkin’ and Drivin'” isn’t as bad as the title might imply (a golf cart on private property is the motor vehicle in question), it still feels like a song idea that should have been squashed on the legal pad. This album also does little to establish a defining sound for William Clark Green.
But Watterson Hall is Green is doing something all good artists and songwriters do. Instead of chasing what they think their audience or the public wants, they grow with the audience that brought them to the dance hall. William Clark Green is not going to be the next “breakout” artists in country music whether he wanted to be or not. Instead, he doubles down on being the best William Clark Green he can be, and it results in a strong, career effort.

Hi, this is a general comment about your music reviews. I really appreciate that your first paragraphs give an indication that the music/album/song is good or not so good (bad). I still read your full reviews to get the specifics. What I hate are music reviews in which the writers are cagey about the quality of the work until the last paragraph. It seems these authors are afraid the reader will quit reading the post if they lift the curtain too soon – drives me crazy

Twitter rumor is this artwork is AI. Trigger you hear this – any confirmation from you on what the final verdict is ?

If you ask me if the artwork looks like AI, I would say “Yes.” Do I know that it’s AI? No, I do not.
At the beginning of 2026, I implemented a policy that says any MUSIC that contains any type of AI enhancement is disqualified from being covered here, unless the coverage is about AI itself. I have no indication this music utilizes AI whatsoever.
But I would discourage all artists from using AI to generate artwork, or to use artwork that could be mischaracterized as AI, because this will open up assumption the music is AI too.

He is one of the artists that I have met several times after his shows and he is such a genuine and kind person that I would still be a big fan of his no matter what his future music is like. Whether there is 20 people at his shows (and there has been here in Wisconsin), or more, he just likes talking with people and being himself.

Hmm. I really wanted to like this album but only 2 tracks do it for me. I think WCG reached his peak, musically, with Rose Queen and Ringling Road. No banger here like “Sympathy”. Will continue to look forward to future releases though.

I think this is a solid step up from Hebert Island – feels like he’s leaned into being a doubles hitter, trusting that the homers will come, after a few years of swinging out of his shoes and hitting popups.

I think oftentimes consistency is taken for mediocrity. WCG has banged out catchy if not deep ditties about some pedestrian (but universal) themes for a good long while. This, is that.
Prolly be buzzier if he released an EDM inspired album on reel-to-reel only ‐ but me, I like Indiana Jones just fine.

Nothing from here beats Fool Me Once…but I agree with James that all Will does is put out damn good songs.
He is to that Randy/Wade sound what BJ Barham is to the Southeastern approach…and even if he hasn’t put together that “mature” Lamentations style album yet, I’d argue that Rose Queen and Ringling Road are every bit as timeless encapsulations of being ~27 as Lamentations is of being 35.

I’ve listened to the album a few times now. I think the first half is really great. It loses some steam as it goes on and then “Drinkin & Driving” hits different if you’ve ever been on the “boys” golf trip. Its a veritable anthem, even for the 40-60 something group of mine. Goofy fun in a semi-controlled environment.
WCG has some perfectly benign songs that are broken up by legitimately unique and timeless songs. At first I thought the review was being overly harsh but an 8/10 is a solidly positive score and the writing feels much more personal on this record.

I love the soaring chorus of “Stubborn and Remains.” I do like most of the album, which I tend to with his music. I will take music that sounds like this over most of the country/americana/folk music that contains more “depth” because it just flat out sounds better.

Anyone who’s seen Will play knows that he’d rather be Tom Petty than John Prine.
And I fucking love it!
We have enough lads trying to be the voice of a generation…and Will realizes that while he can write circles around most of them, he can’t write “On the Red River.”
So he just writes good songs…and I’d definitely say this has a better batting average of songs I’d immediately like to hear again than Cat in the Rain, if not Price of Admission.

Love the way this guy writes, sings and plays. Great album. Puts me, medias res, smack dab in some small-town down that way.
That’s what good songwriters do. In my opinion, anyway.

I saw him live last year opening for Shane Smith and the Saints and thought he was great. However, I can’t do anything with this album. I don’t like the production at all. I’ve rarely heard an artist who sounds so different live than in the studio.
