Charles Wesley Godwin Announces New EP “Lonely Mountain Town”

It’s a time of high cotton in independent country, and the bumper crop keeps coming in, both in the form of new music for fans, and elevated opportunities for deserving artists. Charles Wesley Godwin is one of the musicians using strong roots to reach for the sky, and to keep the momentum going from his last full-length LP Family Ties from 2023 (read review), he’s readying the release of a 7-song EP on February 28th called Lonely Mountain Town.
Said to be quieter and more contemplative than Family Ties, the EP was recorded at the studio of his lead guitarist and bandmate Al Torrence called “Torrence’s Music Garden Studios” in New Brighton, PA. All the songs Godwin wrote on the road in 2024 while traveling. He penned an estimated 30 songs last year in total, picking out 7 of the best for the new release.
“I just want to continue writing like I have been and continue to record when I can and to keep producing and making music,” Godwin says. “Because that’s what makes me happy. If I keep doing that, then I think everything else will work out just fine.”

Just fine is how things have been going for Charles Wesley Godwin lately as he’s made late night debut appearances, played at big festivals, and toured with Luke Combs opening for stadium crowds. What started with the big goose of attention via Zach Bryan has continued to grow into mainstream-level opportunities.
Speaking of, it was while touring with The Avett Brothers opening for Combs that Godwin found an affinity for the Jason Molina song “Hammer Down” that he would sing with Scott Avett live. The two turn in a studio rendition of the song for the new EP. Charles also collaborates with his Big Loud label mate and traditional country throwback artist Ernest on a song called “Dead To Rights.”
“These are character songs,” Godwin says. “Most of them aren’t about my life. They’re just little pieces that I’ve taken from traveling.”
New song “It’s The Little Things” will be out on Friday, February 7th. Lonely Mountain Town is now available for pre-save.

Ahh a new Godwin album. I look forward to the completely unexpected and totally surprising Zac Bryant album drop in an attempt to step on this one too

If he had that many songs, why not add one or two and make an lp?

Maybe a second EP in the fall? It feels like the model going forward is releasing less music more often like back in the early days of recording music. Studio time became so expensive by the 60’s labels started buying blocks of times for artists to record full length albums since it made economic senses. Today, technology allows artists to record more often and economically there is no need for 10-12 songs to fulfill scheduled times.
Also, with today’s shrinking attention spans, by the 3rd “single” albums feel ancient. A two wave EP release would give CWG a second shot of media coverage in the fall.
Just my thoughts.

Well just becsuse he wrote thirty songs, doesnt mean they are of the quality he would want to put out to the public. Or maybe they just didnt fit what he was going for. Like the other poster said, its quite possible he releases another ep in the fall.

He isn’t Zach Bryan, and he prefers quality over quantity. I’m not trying to knock Zach, but CWG held back good songs from his first two albums. One of them was “Soul Like Mine,” which he didn’t release until his Family Ties album. He wrote and performed that song when he was with the Union Sound Treaty. However, if you listen to the original vs the newest version, you’ll hear how much he improved that song. So he has songs he likes, but he tweaks them until he’s happy. Jason Isbell does similar things.

I’m looking forward to this! I’m planning on two Willie Outlaw Fests this year (Raleigh and Va Beach) and CWG is part of one.

Family Ties has gotten even better with time.
Excited for this.

Family Ties was great, this looks more like something to keep the fans happy. Which is fine.

Jason Molina is my among my all time favorites. I encourage anyone reading to check him out. His discography is a little daunting and confusing with the name changes. Start with the Songs: Ohia album Magnolia Electric Co.

So excited for this. He’s coming to a somewhat small venue in my town and it sold out immediately and tickets are going for hundreds of dollars for lawn seats. Won’t be long till he’s headlining a stadium tour. Absolutely love him
