Country Artist Spencer Hatcher’s Mother Killed, Father Injured in Home Invasion

Up-and-coming traditional country artist Spencer Hatcher is having to go through the unthinkable after a home invasion has left his mother dead, and his father injured. The perpetrator was ultimately killed by the father.

62-year-old Holly Hatcher was murdered late in the evening on Sunday, August 3rd in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia just north of Harrisonburg in Rockingham County. An intruder broke into the house, wielding a knife. After fatally stabbing Mrs. Hatcher, the intruder then attacked her husband, 65-year-old Michael Hatcher, who sustained multiple injuries.

Michael Hatcher then retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and fired a single shot at the intruder as he attempted to flee before calling 911. When authorities arrived, both Holy Hatcher and the intruder were pronounced dead on the scene.

Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson of Rockingham County said, “This is a highly unusual, apparently completely random [attack] with an individual with no known history of violent behavior of any kind, or even criminal behavior of any kind.”

The intruder was identified as 41-year-old Kevin Moses Walker of Pikesville, Maryland. According to an investigation, Walker booked a campsite at the Endless Caverns RV & Camp in nearby New Market, Virginia, on Friday, August 1 at 2:22 pm, and took a tour of the caverns at 3:00 pm. Then later in the day, he purchased a sleeping bag and a large knife from the Walmart in Timberville about seven miles away. That is where the intruder was captured on camera.

The next morning on Saturday, August 2nd, Virginia State Police responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle on Endless Caverns Road. It was then that they discovered that the camp store had been broken into, and likely rammed by a vehicle, though nothing was stolen from the location. Felony warrants were issued, but police had no leads, and had no indication that the individual responsible for damaging the camp store should be considered armed and dangerous.

The next time authorities were notified was at 11:57 pm Sunday evening when they responded to the Hatcher house, finding Kevin Moses Walker dead in the driveway, Michael Hatcher injured outside the house, and Holly Hatcher deceased inside.

Signed to Stone Country Records, Spencer Hatcher has released five singles since 2024. He’s been featured multiple times in Saving Country Music playlists, including the 2024 Christmas playlist with Aubrie Sellers. Spencer’s song “The Way She Lies” was given Honorable Mention in the “Best Country Singles of 2025 So Far.” Hatcher just released his latest single “When She Calls Me Cowboy” on July 25th.

Spencer Hatcher grew up playing banjo in a bluegrass family band. His younger brother Connor Hatcher is also a musician, and often sings bass harmonies with his brother. Hatcher has garnered a strong following throughout Virginia, and his bluegrass-to-traditional-country story has earned him comparisons to Zach Top and his musical hero Keith Whitley.

After the tragedy, Hatcher posted on social media, “It’s with a heavy heart and overwhelming sadness that – due to a monumental loss in our family – I must cancel my upcoming shows at VOA Country Music Fest in Butler County, OH (8/8) and at Rockingham County Fair in Harrisonburg, VA (8/11 & 8/12). I appreciate everyone that has lent their support to me and my loved ones. We ask that everyone please respect our family’s privacy at this time.”

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s office has confirmed that no charges will be filed in the case since the offender is deceased, but the investigation remains active.
