Jason Isbell Announces Acoustic Album “Foxes in the Snow” & Solo Tour

Jason Isbell is starting off 2025 with a change of pace. After releasing his last many albums with his backing band The 400 Unit, and performing with them over the last many years, 2025 will see the release of a solo acoustic album called Foxes in the Snow on March 7th, with a solo acoustic tour following. A new country-inflected song called “Bury Me” is out now (listen below).
Foxes in the Snow was recorded with an all-mahogany 1940 Martin 0-17 at the historic Electric Lady Studios in New York City. Similarly, many of the acoustic shows Isbell will play to start the year will be in historic venues. Despite the stripped-down sound, this should give the whole experience an intimate feel. Often with acclaimed songwriters, this can enhance the experience as opposed to take away from it.

Jason Isbell the songwriter isn’t just acclaimed. Many consider him one of the greatest of this generation. Isbell won the 2023 Song of the Year for his track “King of Oklahoma” off of his last album Weathervanes.
This is not the end of The 400 Unit, just a pause and a shift of creative direction to commence 2025. Further dates with The 400 Unit have also been announced for later in the year (see below). The album and tour come in the wake of Isbell’s divorce from fellow performer Amanda Shires in early 2024.
Foxes in the Snow is now available for pre-order.

Sounds cool excited to check this out!
January 14, 2025 @ 8:58 am
He should have made it a duo effort and brought along a good violin player as revenge.
January 15, 2025 @ 3:24 pm
Ouch
January 14, 2025 @ 10:22 am
Well, the new single is nothing if not boring.
January 14, 2025 @ 10:39 am
That’s an awesome song to kick off this album. Love it
January 14, 2025 @ 11:05 am
Pretty lukewarm on the new song, but that being said Isbell has this weird habit of releasing the weakest songs off an album as its singles. Same thing with Weathervanes, I thought Deathwish was by far the weakest track. So I’m waiting to be pleasantly surprised.
January 14, 2025 @ 11:54 am
I agree that ‘Deathwish” was weak, and wasn’t even really indicative of the direction of “Weathervanes.” But I like this new song. It’s acoustic though, so it’s not going to grab everyone. It’s Jason Isbell though. I’m sure he’s got some deeper stuff in store.
January 14, 2025 @ 5:38 pm
Yeah I wonder how much of it is Isbell channeling the Dylan contrarian approach. He’s perfected the full band rock and light show, so obviously he’s gonna release a solo acoustic album to follow it up. But like I said no doubts about his quality.
January 16, 2025 @ 12:21 pm
Acoustic Jason hits different. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with “JI400U” Jason & his band veering closer to the more modern day harder rocking version of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – I think they’re astoundingly good live. But Acoustic Jason is a vibe unto itself.
The homespun nature of just him & an acoustic is where people can truly shut up & listen to him in his purest form. I don’t have much success getting people who’ve tuned him out due to his social media persona to come back to the fold (and not is it essential for me to do so, but it’d be nice) & check out more of his stuff again, but if the choice were between his stripped down acoustic side or the full blown JI400U live version of him/band, it’d be the acoustic side I might ensnare maybe a few to give another listen to out of pure appreciation of the craft.
January 16, 2025 @ 12:42 pm
I actually saw Isbell play an acoustic show WITH the 400 Unit in 2019. It was an excellent show. I think they were touring to Mexico or something, and they could play the fest, but getting their gear there was going to be difficult so they made it work.

January 16, 2025 @ 12:45 pm
Isabel and Sadler alone playing an acoustic set would be worth the price of admission; reading the thread you posted now…
January 16, 2025 @ 1:46 pm
Wow, they did “Maybe It’s Time”? That can’t be played very often! And seeing him & Amanda together before it all went downhill, too.
January 14, 2025 @ 11:31 am
Sometimes the production on Isbell’s albums is too predictable and Americana and gets in the way of a song. I like this song and the direction of this project. Get back to the country roots.
January 14, 2025 @ 12:14 pm
great song and nice recording. wish id have written it. looking forward to this record
January 14, 2025 @ 12:31 pm
Awesome! Looking forward to this album. I tried getting tickets to the nearest show and it was sold out. Secondary ticket market was out of control, I think it was $200 per.
January 15, 2025 @ 7:04 am
The absolute worst time to buy secondary tickets is at release. Plan everything but the ticket and buy tickets in the days or even better hours before the show.
January 14, 2025 @ 12:41 pm
damn. that Martin box sounds good!
January 14, 2025 @ 1:32 pm
Cool, simple tune. I’d certainly prefer a Jason Isbell album with the 400 Unit showcasing their rich, well-played brand of high quality Lindsey Buckingham / Neil Young-styled Americana, but I dig this song enough to pre-order the album.
January 14, 2025 @ 2:03 pm
Communism is so yesterday.
January 14, 2025 @ 7:09 pm
Yeah, but using the word “communism” to criticize anything developed after the 1950s is so 1950s.
January 15, 2025 @ 3:28 pm
The only people calling things communist these days are fascists. Best just not to say anything at all and go about your merry way.
I don’t like stories about fascist country artists that sometimes pop up on this site, but you generally wouldn’t know that because I don’t go out of my way to make an ass of myself to comment on those stories. If others like fascist country artists, it’s their prerogative to do so.
January 16, 2025 @ 12:06 pm
Jason,
The only thing that is more out of style than communism at this point is calling someone a “fascist.” At this point it’s literally a word without any meaning whatsoever. A pejorative used by the dumbest and least creative people on the planet to proclaim their membership in this underperforming group.
Speaking of underperforming, Zach Bryan poops out better music on any given Tuesday afternoon than anything you’ve ever done.
January 16, 2025 @ 12:14 pm
As a practicing Christian, I’ll pray for good tidings and self-awareness for you in this wonderful optimistic new year
January 16, 2025 @ 12:48 pm
As a practicing non-theist and logician, I hope your passive-aggression skills improve in 2025.
January 17, 2025 @ 11:47 am
You righties literally call anything you don’t like “socialism” or “communism.”
At least there’s evidence to back up the fact that the right is full of fascists.
January 17, 2025 @ 12:10 pm
The right wasn’t the group that suppressing the freedom of speech via big tech.
The right didn’t use the three letter agencies to pressure and suppress the very accurate Hunter Biden laptop story to influence the outcome of an election.
The right didn’t build private portal access into Twitter to allow government officials in three letter agencies to delete, ban, and suppress the speech of Twitter users.
The right didn’t leverage a virus to lockdown and step on the constitutional rights of citizens and lock them in their homes and destroy their businesses. And then use the above influence on big tech and the media to suppress the very real fact that covid was a disease that was killing only the very old and the very fat.
The right didn’t try to create a “department of misinformation” within Homeland security.
The right didn’t effect a coup de tat and install a presidential candidate that no one voted for.
The right didn’t use lawfare to try and keep RFK off of state ballots.
The right didn’t kneecap the Bernie campaign so that it could install Hillary as a candidate.
Come about about facism?
January 18, 2025 @ 11:25 am
You really need to turn off the Newsmax, donut boy.
January 14, 2025 @ 3:58 pm
The album cover photo was taken as he watched Obama and Trump laughing and talking at President Carter’s funeral.
January 14, 2025 @ 6:52 pm
This tune is great. Way more country than the dad rock stuff he has been doing. This makes me excited for the album. Perhaps he can make stuff that is country!
Everyone rest your hate of the things he has done and said for a few and enjoy what he makes – if he makes what you like.
January 14, 2025 @ 9:44 pm
The single wasn’t anything special but then again not every song has to be a world beater. I’m excited to hear the rest of the album for sure.
January 15, 2025 @ 7:49 am
Solo acoustic shows how diverse his music is. I’ll buy the new album. Liked the song he prereleased. But then again I’d listen to him read a phone book. I wonder if he has watched “a complete unknown “ and what he thinks of it.
January 15, 2025 @ 9:25 am
Damn, I saw “@ with Band Of Horses” then looked up to see “07/11 – Sioux City, IA @ Orpheum Theatre,” thinking the “@” meant Band of Horses was opening. Just realized “@” was used for every date–bummer! Would’ve been a cool pairing. Though I supposed the “evening with” is a pretty good alternative.
January 15, 2025 @ 10:16 am
I can like the single, and still hope that one day he has to watch 30-50 feral hogs
eat that Martin?
Willow Avalon “Baby Blue” yesterday – smooth af and she doesn’t hate me (that she’s
said out loud, at least) so imma spin that more, prolly.
January 16, 2025 @ 12:28 pm
An upvote to you as an Isbell fan, straight up out of respect for giving the tune a spin.
January 15, 2025 @ 12:43 pm
I believe the guitar is a Martin D-17, not 0-17.
January 15, 2025 @ 8:35 pm
I saw him acoustic in Wilkes barre PA in 2019. He wasn’t solo he had that yahoo from the 400 unit with him but it was a small theater and it was incredible.
January 16, 2025 @ 12:51 pm
Trigger, have you heard much about this tour as far as is he going solo for some dates or is it always with the 400 unit? From what I gather the events were its an “Evening with Jason Isbell”, seems to indicate it will be just him as the 400 unit isn’t included. The show I am going to says an “Evening with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit”. I imagine other folks will find this useful when picking out the shows.
That being said, I am digging the direction of this album. That is a straight ode to bluegrass. Jason doesn’t have that traditional bluegrass voice, imagine Billy Strings singing the same song and its very clear.
January 16, 2025 @ 12:53 pm
Yes, so the dates with a ‘+’ beside them are solo acoustic, or “An evening with.” The other dates are full band, starting in April.
January 16, 2025 @ 1:21 pm
Thanks, Trigger. Apparently, I can’t read symbols that well. Haha
January 18, 2025 @ 8:02 am
That’s about 90 shows. If he can come close to filling those venues by himself without the expense of putting on band shows, I imagine that will be a LOT of cash. And as you say, on the heels of his divorce.
Looks like DC will have about as many tickets for sale as the NYC area (the two Beacon shows and the Capitol Theater show in Port Chester). And the NYC area has about 3 times as many people. Another indicator that the DC area has been a big one for roots rock/Americana music over the years. For example, Little Feat was especially loved here.
Will definitely be pre-ordering this. And will have to look into one of those Warner Theater shows.
January 25, 2025 @ 11:06 pm
I was lucky enough to attend the Grimeys 10th anniversary southeastern show in 2023, it was Jason with his acoustic and Amanda with her fiddle. Absolutely incredible, intimate performance. I hope to catch one of the Nashville stops for this tour.
