Album Review – Karen Jonas – “The Rise and Fall of American Kitsch”

Simply the title of this album feels ambitious. But not even this prepares you for what you’ll experience if you approach this album with an open mind, and as a linear work. Karen Jonas has released an exemplar take on the American concept record.
Muddy Roots Festival In, Deep Blues Out
1 CommentFirst the bad news. One of the best festivals for independent roots music, the Deep Blues Festival, is no more. Simply put, this is a tragedy. If the independent roots movement had one premier festival, this was it, and this is coming from someone focused on country more than blues. Still, bands like .357 String […]
Underwood Will Lip Sync at Super Bowl, Fault of Garth Brooks
12 CommentsThis Sunday at the Super Bowl, Carrie Underwood will very likely be lip-syncing the National Anthem, whether she wants to or not, and it is mostly the fault of the king of pop country, Garth Brooks. This story starts way back in 1993 at Super Bowl XXVIII in Pasadena, CA. In 1993, Garth Brooks was […]
I Told You Taylor Swift Can’t Sing
110 CommentsOk, you can stop emailing me. No, I did not watch the Grammy’s last night. I’d rather watch my genitals being made into a smoothee in a blender than to offer up my olfactory to that Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck bullshit; a bunch of talent-less millionaires dressed up like muppets, prancing around to fluff each […]
Agridustrial & Free Music from the Shack Shakers
0 CommentsFor years Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers and their fans have used the term “Agridustrial” to describe their unique rock/country/punk/blues sound, and now they have decided to etch the term on their latest long player, due to come out on April 13th. Agridustrial will be the bands 7th album, and they are releasing the first single […]
Ray Wylie Hubbard Live @ Waterloo Records
0 CommentsFortune would find that on my way down to Mexico, I was in Austin, TX the same day that Ray Wylie Hubbard’s new CD A: Enlightenment B: Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C), was being released, and he was making a short, low-fi appearance at the famed Waterloo Records. So I grabbed savingcountrymusic.com’s most latest […]
Joe Buck’s Upcoming “Demon in my Head”
2 CommentsAs first reported here, the Music City Madman Joe Buck, the former guitarist for Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers and bassist for Hank III has signed with Century Media Records, and will be releasing his first official solo album through them. Well now I can report that the album will be called Demon in my Head […]
Outlaw Radio – New Station & New Time
2 CommentsWell I’m finally back in the States, and I’m happy to report that I made it out of Mexico with my life, limbs, possessions, personal wealth (what little of it there is), and still creating solid stool. I’m not sure what was more scary, or exciting: the ever-present potential of kidnapping and muggery, or the […]
Hank III Announces West Coast /Texas Tour
3 CommentsSo of course as soon as I decide to leave the real world for a few days, the REAL country news wires get hot. So I’m sitting here in a crude “internet” cafe in the small interior Mexico mountain town of Xilitia, feeding a gerbil that runs in a wheel that somehow gives me some […]
Live Review – Dale Watson @ The Continental Club
5 CommentsIf you want to see Jerry Jeff Walker, the best place to see him is at Luckenbach, TX. If you want to see BR549, you should see them at Robert’s Western World in Nashville. A Dwight Yoakam concert is probably a good bet anywhere, but if you ever get the chance, Bakersfield, CA is the […]
Hank Jr. Noticably Absent from Reinstate Hank
36 CommentsWhen Hank Williams III’s album Damn Right, Rebel Proud went to #2 in the charts last year, this was a significant development in the movement to Reinstate Hank Williams to the Grand Ole Opry because of the first track, “The Grand Ole Opry (Ain’t So Grand),” was a song protesting the Grand Ole Opry’s stance. […]
Outlaw Radio from Nashville !
0 CommentsWell there is some good news and some bad news in regards to the Outlaw Radio Chicago podcast. Bad news first: The network that it was broadcasting on live every Tuesday has apparently gone belly up. The good news is you can still listen to every episode at savingcountrymusic.com/outlaw-radio, and I will begin posting the […]
Muddy Roots Festival in the Works
8 CommentsI’ve been saying for years that one of the the things the REAL country movement is lacking is a bona-fide music festival where the music can be promoted, and musicians, podcasters, media, and fans can network. Festivals like the Deep Blues and Pickathon have come close, but this year’s inagural Muddy Roots Festival in late […]
