The Wonder Women of Country are Here!

Do you feel a ripple in the space/time continuum? It’s because three of the most super powered women of country have joined forces to save country music and vanquish the forces of evil. Kelly Willis, Brennen Leigh, and Melissa Carper have officially united in what is being called the Wonder Women of Country, and we are definitely here for it.
This pairing isn’t entirely new. Though all three had collaborated with each other before, in late 2021 Kelly Willis approached Brennen Leigh and Melissa Carper, and asked them if they wanted to play some shows together. This wasn’t Willis asking them to be her backing band. Instead, all three women would get an opportunity to showcase their singing and songwriting skills as the three collaborated on each other’s songs.
Since then the trio has played dozens of shows on occasional tours, but after being nagged about offering actual music from the collaboration, they decided to make it official by going into the studio, recording a 6-song EP out March 15th, and officially calling themselves the Wonder Women of Country.
On Friday (2-16), the trio released their first single called “Another Broken Heart” with Kelly Willis singing lead. “This is a song I heard Monte Warden and Bruce Robison start writing in the other room,” says Willis. “I was so smitten with the verse I heard, that I could not help getting all up in this song’s business. I wrote a bridge and chorus for it and the guys did not seem to mind that I crashed their party. It’s a classic crying in your beer heartbreak song with a kind of 70’s style country/pop feel.”
The Wonder Women of Country were officially launched during a showcase at Austin’s legendary Waterloo Records on Friday afternoon. It was part of the greater Ameripolitan Awards weekend happening in Austin, with the trio also scheduled to perform on the awards show Sunday (2-18) evening.

All three women are well-accomplished in country music coming into this project. Kelly Willis is already considered part of Texas music royalty as a songwriter and performer, and needs no introduction.
Brennen Leigh might be from the upper Midwest, but spent years in Texas and most recently Nashville paying dues and has had her songs recorded by Lee Ann Womack, Rodney Crowell, Sunny Sweeney, Charley Crockett and others. Her last solo album, 2023’s Ain’t Through Honky Tonkin’ Yet is killer.
Melissa Carper has been playing bass and singing for many years, but finally stepped up as a proper solo artist with her albums Daddy’s Country Gold (2021) and Ramblin’ Soul (2022) that have both received critical acclaim. She’s also rumored to have a new album on the way this summer.
There is strength in numbers, and as can be heard in their debut song “Another Broken Heart,” these three talented women together might even be greater than the sum of their parts.

I’ve been a Kelly Willis fan since her first album in the early 90s. I loved her voice and beauty, and her music really should have broken bigger on the country charts. I’m familiar with Brennan Leigh through her songs (recorded by others) and bought her recent Honky Tonkin’ album. This is the first I’ve heard of Melissa Carper and I will check out her music. But I digress…
The posted song is beautifully written and recorded. Those sweet harmonies and pedal steel really color the song. Sounds Country to me, but I know mainstream country radio won’t play it. That’s a dang shame. Well, of course, I’m going to buy the EP to support and enjoy the music of these truly wonderful Wonder Women of Country.

Bro, you said since the early 90’s and I thought you had to be joking, so I looked it up. She’s 55? Holy cow, she must have found the fountain of youth somewhere.

I remember Kelly Willis’s CD “Bang Bang” getting something of a push when it came out in 1991 on MCA Records–It was featured at the now-long-gone Sam Goody. I thought she looked and sounded very good. I was surprised that country radio did not pick up on her and play her singles. Maybe she was too rocking for the time.
She used to work with long-time husband Bruce Robsison. I saw that they got divorced a couple of years ago.

Wow-wee! I spent part of the weekend listening to Melissa Carper’s musical output on You Tube. Amazing songs from a super talented singer and musician. Her voice does take a little while to get used to, but so did Dwight Yoakam’s Kentucky twang. However, after a couple few videos, I was gobsmacked! I’m loving her retro country style. I’ve cued a couple of her albums to purchase in my next music buy. Thanks for shining a light on this wonder woman of country!

Kelli Willis is SO UNDERRATED, it’s a Crime. Her Song “What I Deserve” is a Regular on My Country Playlist !

What are you hearing in Kelly Willis? I don’t hear much that is not fairly basic in terms of music or lyrics, voice, melody, etc. To my ears, she seems the least talented of the 3. Thanks.

Kelly Willis is definitely a cut above the banjo infused pop posing as country. I’m sure many like you said the same of Loretta Lynn back in the day..

I listened to all 3 women separately, and I must say I think Melissa Carper is a major talent. Her voice may be an acquired taste, sounding to me like a nasal Loretta Lynn or somewhat like Maria Muldaur. But I like it. Reading about her, I found out that she is gay, and has listened to all kinds of music growing up, including early jazz. Her songwriting is superb and to me, some songs sound like they could come from the great American songbook. Her music is superb and understated but very varied in instrumentation, another strong point. She is after common emotions and humor and universality in her lyrics, which I think can help her songs last for generations. A great Americana talent!

Oh yes. We saw Melissa in Roanoke, VA a while back. What a song writer. What a performance. Kelly Willis is a legend. And Brenden Leigh is terrific. We are going to see them this summer at the BRMC. Can’t wait.

3 super heroines of country music! I’m on!!
February 19, 2024 @ 8:57 am
Not sure why you felt the need to cite Melissa’s sexual preference but I agree that she is an amazing talent.

That song is great (can’t find it on iTunes) and these women are the real deal. Looking forward to the album.

This should be something else! I am a huge Brennen Leigh fan, so talented, great writer and singer, so combining her talents with Kelly & Melissa sounds like a great trio!

This is so exciting!! These three are a powerhouse group! I saw them in KC back in November & was blown away. I was one of those nagging them to record songs together 🙂
I was already a big fan of Brennen Leigh. As a Midwestern girl, her 2020 album “Prairie Love Letter” is superb! So hearing those three sing “Outside the Jurisdiction of Man” from that album with their perfect, angelic harmony– just wow. I left that KC show a fan of all three women & their music as well. I think they are the finest women in country music right now. Wonder Women is right!

First heard Kelly Willis in duet with Robbie Fulks on the lost classic “Parallel Bars” from around 1998 – I’ve been smitten ever since!
February 17, 2024 @ 1:04 pm
I saw them play together in St. Louis in the fall. Amazing sound! I was hoping they would record something together. Can’t wait to check it out.

I like the song, and glad to get new Kelly music in any way I can. But the WWOC is bittersweet.
Just like when her and Bruce would put out duet albums, I would be glad to hear her voice, but it kept pushing back when we might get more solo records. With their divorce, I thought “aha, solo record on the way!”
Glad she is getting back to it though, and sounds like next is a remastered/anniversary release of What I Deserve.
February 17, 2024 @ 5:42 pm
Wouldn’t totally rule out new solo albums for either of these women. In fact, I think Melissa Carper has one on the way.
February 17, 2024 @ 9:27 pm
Have been a Kelly Willis fan since seeing her at the Continental Club in Austin while a law student in the early 90s. What I Deserve is one of my favorite albums, ever. I liked her work with Bruce but am looking forward to new solo work.

So far, this song beats Taylor Swift and anybody else like her all hollow. Let’s hope that Top 40 country radio decides to challenge itself and give this song (and this album) from these women a ton of airplay.

Need to listen to this

Good for these ladies, who’ll inject more needed female talent and perspective into Country music. But where are the Highwomen ?
February 20, 2024 @ 11:14 am
I think the Pistol Annies are better than the Highwomen.
February 20, 2024 @ 2:56 pm
Perhaps, but where are the Pistol Annies ?
