Tyler Childers Plays “Jersey Giant” Solo For First Time in Years

It seems strange to think that a song that Tyler Childers never even really properly recorded or released would go on to become an American country music standard, and one of the most beloved from his catalog. But such is the fate for Tyler’s song “Jersey Giant,” which despite the lack of a proper studio release from Childers himself, has become a certified hit for many others.
Much was made when Elle King first recorded and released the song in early November of 2022 after receiving Tyler’s blessing. If Tyler Childers wasn’t going to release a proper studio version of the song, somebody should. And no matter what one might think of Elle King, it’s hard to say she didn’t do “Jersey Giant” justice. But that was just the start of the song’s legacy.
Singer/Songwriter Evan Honer from Surprise, Arizona took his rendition of “Jersey Giant” and made a career out of it. After his version of the song went megaviral, he was signed to Atlantic Records. Honer’s “Jersey Giant” version with Julia DiGrazia released on December 16th, 2022 now has 132 million streams on Spotify alone. It’s likely to be Certified Gold by the RIAA here soon.
But it doesn’t stop there. Dozens of other versions of the song exist out there, including many that have received millions of streams. When Sam Barber covered the song on his 2024 album Restless Mind, it almost felt like he was being a bandwagoner. Of course, it’s one of the most popular tracks on the album.
“Jersey Giant” was written by Tyler Childers about a dozen years ago. And though he never did a proper recording or release of the song, he did upload a scratch track version for free onto SoundCloud, which is were a lot of the folks that have covered it probably found it first. Though he mind have performed it at a bar or show somewhere before his career blew up, there’s no recording of any such moment.
But lo and behold, Tyler Childers fans were shocked to learn that on Saturday night (4/19) at Kroger Field in Lexington, KY, he performed the song for the first time live solo. Fans were elated to finally hear Tyler Childers do a song that so many have helped make famous.
“Jersey Giant” is a unique composition for Childers since it features a bridge within the verse/chorus structure. According to Tyler, he was tired of the song shortly after he wrote it. Since it references a woman that is not his sweet Lady May (Senora May), it just may not fit as something Childers wanted to sing about in the present day.
Childers did sing “Jersey Giant” with Elle King in Kentucky on February 19, 2023, but this was the first time Childers sang it solo with his backing band The Foodstamps. Interestingly, he played electric guitar on the track, which is rare for Childers. It looks perhaps like a Fender Mustang he picked up for his “Jersey Giant” rendition. The song came about midway in the set list.
Can more live audiences expect to see Childers perform “Jersey Giant?” We’ll have to wait and see.

Do you think this will make it in his regular rotation or did he just play it for his home crowd?
April 20, 2025 @ 10:06 am
We’ll see. People griped that he never played “Whitehouse Road,” and then he started playing it regularly. Now people gripe he never plays “Feathered Indians,” though he still does upon occasion. He pushes back a little on just playing the hits, but not nearly as bad as some others.
*cough (Sturgill Simpson) cough*

Yeah, I saw him a couple of years ago, and he played most of his hits the crowd and I thought it was an amazing concert.

Evan Honer has never signed with a major label- he started his own indie label Coverdale Records. Also typo the second time his name is mentioned.
April 20, 2025 @ 9:51 am
Sorry about the typo.
Evan’s last single “My Expense” was distributed by Atlantic. Whether you want to call it a major label deal, or a major label distribution deal, a major label was involved. People love to get into the semantic arguments about Tyler Childers and Zach Bryan too. They might still own their publishing or even masters, but major labels are involved.

My Expense credits say “Cameron Whitcomb appears courtesy of Atlantic Records”, as shown on Apple Music. Cameron is signed to Atlantic, Evan is on Cloverdale and has always been independent, with Jersey Giant being released under Sonder House.
April 20, 2025 @ 10:12 am
Ah, I see now it was probably a performance credit. I stand corrected.
My deeper point is the guy has blown up into a big name in music off the song. Good for him.
April 20, 2025 @ 10:00 am
Tyler playing electric is new for him, no?
April 20, 2025 @ 10:07 am
I have never seen him play electric in the dozen or so times I’ve seen him perform, and never seen photos or video of it before. Not sure how much he played it throughout the set, or if it was just for this song.
April 20, 2025 @ 10:15 am
Tyler has played a few songs electric for the last 3 tours or so. Even taken some solos on the instrumental only songs.
April 21, 2025 @ 7:13 am
Same. I haven’t seen Childers this tour, but I’ve seen him in concert 11x the past 9 years and never has he played electric. I’ve viewed countless hours of video of his concerts and never seen him play electric. Fiddle, yes; never electric. That’s as much of the story as playing “Jersey Giant.”
But since he’s plugged in, I’ve always wanted to hear Childers cover Jim Ford’s, “Harlan County.”

At the ryman residency in 2020 he played house fire on a gold (sparkle?) tele for the show I was at.
April 20, 2025 @ 10:07 am
Likely the song that has made him the most money.
April 20, 2025 @ 10:45 am
Seen Tyler since the Als and Green Lantern days and last night was probably the best I’ve seen him since he blew up. How much of this was it being a hometown show vs his presentation going forward I dont know, but he was a showman and production on his set has stepped up.
April 20, 2025 @ 11:50 am
Holy man, that was so f-ing incredible. He’s still got it for sure, just need to get the right people and mindset in the studio.
On a slight possible correction Trig, pretty sure that’s a Fender Jaguar, not Mustang. Though the body shapes of the two are similar, those appear to be Jaguar pickups, which are much fatter than Mustang ones
April 20, 2025 @ 2:54 pm
Looks like Childers is entering his Kurt Cobain phase.
April 21, 2025 @ 8:25 am
That could end messy.
April 20, 2025 @ 3:16 pm
Looks like a Fender Jazzmaster
April 20, 2025 @ 5:32 pm
Could be, would depend on the scale length which I can’t tell from the video.
April 21, 2025 @ 6:02 am
Definitely NOT Jaguar pickups
April 21, 2025 @ 9:36 am
Yeah you’re right, that’s definitely a Jazzmaster, good eye
April 20, 2025 @ 12:12 pm
I’m seeing him Thursday so would love it if he did it then!
April 20, 2025 @ 2:07 pm
I don’t understand the hype with this song.
April 21, 2025 @ 7:04 am
Same, I personally have never seen a rooster and thought “damn that chicken is hot!”. But to each their own, I suppose.
April 21, 2025 @ 7:29 am
I want to slap the people in the video.
“Shut up,” is about the most ignorant way to respond to an unexpected event imaginable.
I hope the muppet who yelled that out got a case of the clap later that night.

Update: he did this last night in Charlotte and it was wonderful. Incredible show overall. But he told us sorry he had to sway the Charlotte show by a week but he had planned to debut jersey giant at the Kentucky show so we got it as a special apology for cancelling our original show. Because he wouldn’t have done it in Charlotte without the delay since he always planned to debut it in Kentucky.
Also this was my first time seeing him live. Wasn’t ready for how incredibly charming he would be. Like easily the most charming performer in between songs I’ve ever seen
