Vince Gill Celebrates 50 Years of Making Music with Summer Tour

We’re probably not making a big enough deal over Vince Gill. The guy’s only one of the best singers, and one of the best guitar players in the business, let alone now a touring member of The Eagles. Over the last few years, Gill’s also been the big name willing to lend his voice to the songs of artists both big and small. Everyone wants to sing with Vince Gill, and he’s more than happy to oblige.
This summer will mark 50 years that the 67-year-old Vince Gill has been performing music professionally, and he’s celebrating by going on an extensive tour that will culminate in a four night residency at the Ryman Auditorium. He’ll also be playing numerous other prestigious spots on the tour such as The Fox Theatre and Atlanta, and New York’s Beacon Theater.
“I left home 50 years ago to try and become an accomplished musician and perform in front of whoever would show up. All these years later, it feels as special today as it ever did,” Vince Gill says.
Making it extra special is the all-star eight-piece band he’s assembled behind him for the tour that includes the legendary Jim “Moose” Brown on keys, harmony singer and solo artist Wendy Moten, along with Eddie Dunlap on steel guitar, Tom Bukovac, Jeff White, and Jedd Hughes on guitar, John Jarvis on additional keys, Jimmie Lee Sloas on bass, and Billy Thomas on drums.
Vince Gill founded a bluegrass band out of high school called Mountain Smoke before moving to Kentucky and playing in a band called Bluegrass Alliance, and eventually Boone Creek with Ricky Skaggs. In 1976, Gill moved to Los Angeles, and performed in Byron Berline’s band Sundance. He later joined Pure Prairie League in 1978 before launching his solo country career.

Wonder why he doesn’t have any shows in the any states west of Oklahoma. Or even in Texas, for that matter.
February 18, 2025 @ 8:07 pm
outstanding warrants?
February 19, 2025 @ 6:54 am
Well, he DID show the audience what part of his body they could kiss, after being boo’ed during a show back in the Prairie days…
February 20, 2025 @ 10:32 am
It was earlier than that. It was his High School bluegrass band. The promoter called the High School to get Vinces parents number. I made another comment on this thread about this same story, didn’t realize you had brought this up.

Don’t worry, I’ll keep my lawyers leashed.
For now.

Maybe the Ryman won’t be the end and he’ll hit Texas and the West Coast after that.
I’m surprised that he’s coming into NYC for just one day, especially, since he’s not hitting New Jersey or Long Island or Connecticut, at all. Just one sole show in a Metro Area population of many millions. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think Vince could easily sell out a 3-night stand at the Beacon–and make a couple of appearonces on the network late-night or morning TV shows, and plug his whole tour, while he’s at it..
I’d try to get a ticket, but I’m getting the sense this is going to be $300-plus, at a minimum. Live Nation and Ticketmaster are already advertising “presales” before the General Public sale date.
February 19, 2025 @ 9:14 am
Was thinking the same thing about Boston and the Orpheum.
February 19, 2025 @ 10:44 am
I see that one entity that’s listed as offering pre-sale two days before the general public sale date is the Vince Gill fan club. I imagine that’s a regular thing now. It only costs $20 to join his fan club. That may be better than going through one of those predatory after-market ticket sales sites. Dunno

One of the greatest of all time. It was 1980 when I first saw him as Pure Prairie League and prog/soft rock legends Ambrosia co headlined what was then our only summer event here called Chicagofest. Fast forward to 1998, when I dated a gal who was, to put it mildly, a Vince Gill Stan. She took me to the Christmas show and in turn made me a huge fan ever since. Still remember his excitement of having Ringo hand him a Grammy. An incredible player/songwriter and legend. He basically was the man that turned me on to Country music.

First and foremost an excellent picker and harmony singer.
February 19, 2025 @ 4:11 am
I remember seeing Vince and Albert Lee together at the Melbourne (Australia) Showgrounds in the mid to late(?) 80’s. Great show and a free gig to boot. Bought every album of his from then to now. Wonderful musician. IMO his catalogue surpasses that of the Eagles.

I know Vince Gill is a good singer, I’ve just never liked his voice.
February 19, 2025 @ 10:45 am
It’s made for harmony, not solo.
His voice is too weak and too monotonous, but that said, he’s not alone these days.
An ace picker, tho.
February 19, 2025 @ 11:37 am
It’s got to be hard to hit those high notes when you get older.
There’s a guy here who likes to comment about George Strait using his guitar as a prop and not playing it. No, it’s not necessary for all singers to be good players, but in the case of tenor singers like Vince Gill and Ricky Skaggs, their instrument playing and singing are a total package and the reason I’d want to see them. (Also Willie Nelson–and Roy Clark–in the past–who sing at a lower pitch.)
I got to see George Jones once, near the end of his career, and he had broken his arm or wrist in a fall several days earlier and performed without his guitar. That was fine. If Vince or Ricky or Willie could not play, I think they would call off the concert (or I’d ask to return my tickets and get a refund).
February 26, 2025 @ 4:23 pm
Another “total package” that I saw recently…Steve Wariner. I knew he could sing, and I knew he was a fine guitar player. Still, I had no idea how “fine” he was at both until I saw him in person. I’m still thinking about his one-man, one-guitar, concert days later.

VERY Disappointed NO FLORIDA Shows !!!!!
February 19, 2025 @ 8:35 am
In the early ’80s in Melbourne, Australia, I saw Vince Gill playing as part of the Byron Berline Trio. (The third member was John Hickman, on the five-string banjo.) It was a great show!
Vince Gill was still very young then, but he was a superb sideman. Byron Berline gave him a solo spot, and I remember that Vince sang Rodney Crowell’s song ‘Till I Gain Control Again.’ More than forty years later, this is still a very powerful memory for me.

I’m going to make a concerted effort to attend the Pittsburgh show. I’ve never seen Gill in concert despite considering him one of my favorites from When I Call Your Name to When Love Finds You. I strongly believe “When I Call Your Name” is one of the best country songs ever and “Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away” would be on my high school soundtrack.
I’m not trilled about a seated venue (and Brian may veto it if he finds out before hand), but with that outstanding backing band and checking out his recent setlist (40 songs!!), I might have find a way to be good and make it work.
There must be a new album coming out. His last setlists featured a block of 10 “(new songs)” :
Brown’s Diner Bar
(New song)
Hill People
(New song)
Her Heart
(New song)
Nobody Held Her Like Me
(New song)
I Hope Everybody Lives to 100
(New song)
Benny’s Song
(New song)
Sometimes
(New song)
Heroes
(New song)
When a Soldier Dies
(New song)
The Whole World
(New song)

“Vince Gill performed an acoustic set with the Eagles on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Gill was a last-minute substitute for Steely Dan as the opening act.”
Hey Hop, know you didn’t ask, but, think would enthusiastically recommend that you try to get tickets for the Pittsburgh show. And, although most of us who attended the Eagles concert in Charlotte last March, were probably Vince Gill fans – we were anxious for the Eagles to take the stage.
I really like Gill, and he is very humorous, but, he with an acoustic set, just wasn’t tripping my trigger after a few songs.
Vince, with a killer 8 piece band, i think would be very cool to experience.
February 19, 2025 @ 2:24 pm
Vince seems to have the respect of older artists (both alive and deceased), similar to Marty Stuart. I feel that adds to his integrity. And yes, I will agree with other posts that he excels as a harmony singer. He’s a phenomenal musician. His work with Paul Franklin is stupid good!
February 19, 2025 @ 3:50 pm
You’re OH SO RIGHT,Trigger,Vince Gill (who shares his Apr.12 birthday with my cousins Donnie and Ronnie Turner, but he’s four years younger) is one of the criminally unsung Country legends, and I’d LOVE to see one of his shows, especially if it’s in early July,as my 72nd birthday is July 6.
February 19, 2025 @ 4:36 pm
Need to come to iowa
February 20, 2025 @ 7:14 am
For the guitar fans: First of all, you are gonna get electric Vince, with the Telecaster no doubt. Worth the price of admission. But as a bonus, Uncle Larry is in the band! ( Bukovac, for those not getting the reference) That’s a pretty formidable guitar one- two knock out.
As for Vinces voice, it’s pure maple syrup. The tenor is glorious.
When I Call Your Name, Adrianna, Rest High on that Mountain are solid Country gold. Calling him a harmony vocalist is insulting. He’s got an elite voice.
Baritone is great. I get it. Yet there is room for tenors.
Should be a great tour. I’m all in.

Here is a fun story that I know is true (because Vince Gill told me the story) That first bluegrass band that Vince played in as a teenager got hired at the very last minute, morning of the show (opening act cancelled) to open a show in Oklahoma. The high school bluegrass band showed up at a stadium and realized they were opening for KISS.
Within 30 seconds of their opening song the entire stadium booed them. Vince then turned around, mooned the audience and left. The next morming the local paper ran a review and stated that the local act showed the world what they were made of.

“Here is a fun story that I know is true (because Vince Gill told me the story).”
Um, that’s hardly a basis for knowing it’s true.
Apparently Vince has told the story quite a bit, but absent some confirmation from witnesses, or contemporaneous accounts I’ll take it that Vince is pulling people’s legs.
Entertainers tell stories. (And when they preface it with “This is the truth” or “This really happened,” that’s usually a sign that they’re about to tell a tall tale.)
February 20, 2025 @ 2:17 pm
Ok then. Here you go… his mandolin player who lived in the same town told me the same story and was there. If you need more proof build yourself a time machine.
February 27, 2025 @ 3:42 pm
It is a true story. Vince’s 99 year old mom still has the OKC newspaper clipping of the review of that KISS show.
February 20, 2025 @ 12:01 pm
A class act. Some dates in the UK would be good!
February 20, 2025 @ 1:54 pm
I’ve seen Vince play with the Eagles twice and it’s heartening to see how extensively they rely on his equally stunning guitar playing and vocal abilities
