50 Years Ago: Dolly, Emmylou, and Linda Debut New Supergroup

About the only thing that could possibly ever top the beauty and majesty of the voices of Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris, is all three of them together.
Their 1987 album Trio is considered one of the crowning achievements in country music history. Just like country music’s other major supergroup The Highwaymen, it wasn’t just the star power assembled in Trio, but the way these three iconic voices of country music conjoined together seamlessly and selflessly that made a sound greater than the sum of its parts.
The Trio album won the ACM for Album of the Year in 1987, and the CMA’s Vocal Event of the Year in 1988. The group also won the 1988 Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group, and was nominated for the Grammy’s all-genre Album of the Year. Trio was Certified Platinum by the RIAA, and was succeeded by the Gold-Certified Trio II in 1999. The Complete Trio Collection combining all of the supergroup’s work including rare takes was released in 2016.
But this wasn’t where the collaboration of these three sirens of country music started. It all began 50 years ago today, April 27th, 1976, on the set of the syndicated TV show Dolly!
Dolly Parton came up at a time when country music variety shows were all the rage. She was introduced to much of the world as the sidekick and harmony singer of Porter Wagoner on The Porter Wagoner Show. Of course as time went on, Dolly Parton started stealing the show, and became so beloved, it was time for her to leave Porter Wagoner’s side and shadow. Dolly left in 1974, penning “I Will Always Love You” for Wagoner upon her departure.
In 1976, Dolly Parton would star in her own short-lived, syndicated 30-minute television show simply called Dolly! At the time, Dolly, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt were already friends, and already had been conspiring to perhaps collaborate together in some capacity. Aligning the schedules of the three stars to record an album proved to be difficult. But when Parton launched Dolly!, they were all able find a stitch in their schedule to appear together.
It was during the taping of the second episode of Dolly! where the three first appeared together. In 1975 on her album Prisoner In Disguise, Linda Ronstadt had covered the old J.B. Coats song “The Sweetest Gift.” Emmylou Harris had joined her in studio to sing harmonies. So this seemed like the perfect song for the Trio to sing.
The Trio also performed the old Carter Family classic “Bury Me Under The Weeping Willow.”
The collaboration went so well, the three women resolved to make an album together ASAP, despite the scheduling difficulties. They were actually able to record nearly an album’s worth of material in the coming years with Emmylou’s husband at the time, Brian Ahern, acting as producer. But since all three of them were on separate record labels, logistical snafus dogged the project.
Some of the songs from the sessions did see the light of day though. The songs “Mr. Sandman” and “Evangeline” ended up appearing on Emmylou’s 1981 album, with “Evangeline” becoming the title track. “My Blue Tears” written by Dolly, and featuring all three was also released on Linda Ronstadt’s 1982 album Get Closer.
It would be a decade after that first collaboration on the Dolly! TV show that a proper Trio album would come about. But it was worth the wait, with both the album, and the Trio supergroup going down as one of the greatest collaborations in country music history.

An absolutely glorious trio.
Does Dolly Parton get enough purely musical respect? She’s a fantastic guitar player, a world-historical singer, a first-rank songwriter, and an incredibly capable ensemble/harmony musician. Yes, the looks, the celebrity, and the goodness. But also the *musician.*
Hats off. Love that woman, top to bottom.

I remember watching every episode of the Dolly show back when it aired and being enthralled by the magic these three ladies could create together.

Those harmonies on the Trio records are sublime. Three immensely talented ladies.

Nice shoutout to “Evangeline”, one of my favorite Emmylou albums…and definitely her most beautiful album cover picture.

And let’s not forget Linda, who won her first-ever Grammy of twelve, with this:

Great video clip.
Emmylou Harris sang the uncredited harmony on Linda’s 1974 studio recording of “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still In Love With You.” The Capitol single was a #2 hit on the Billboard Country chart in early 1975. [The other side of that 45 “You’re No Good” became a #1 pop hit]
Both songs were included on Ronstadt’s superb “Heart Like A Wheel” album

Actually, Emmy is credit as the harmony vocalist on the song, as I have my CD copy of HEART LIKE A WHEEL with me right now.
To put this in historical context (because it is rarely ever brought up), Linda and Dolly met when Linda made her fourth and final appearance on Johnny Cash’s TV show in February 1971. Linda had known about Dolly’s music by that time; and Dolly in turn had known about Linda because of her first two hits, “Different Drum” (in 1968), and “Long Long Time” (in 1970). According to Dolly, this was equal to being in company with Elvis and The Beatles for her.
And meanwhile, Linda met Emmylou at Liberty Hall in Houston in February 1973. Emmylou was with Gram Parsons, of course; and Linda was Neil Young’s opening act. Knowing Linda was in town, Gram invited her and Neil down to their show; and that’s where Linda and Emmy became fast friends. The two sang on the last song Gram ever recorded, “In My Hour Of Darkness”; and Linda encouraged Emmy to come back out to L.A. to seek out a recording contract of her own following Gram’s passing.
Now of course after the three of them had done the two TRIO albums, there was always a clamoring for a third. But getting their individual schedules to align together would have been very tough to do even under the best of circumstances; and once Linda announced that she had lost the ability to sing at all, it all ended right then and there. Still, it was a landmark project, not just for country music in particular, but for American popular music in general (IMHO).

There’s something special about female three-part harmonies in country music (and beyond). Amongst others the Dolly Parton/Emmylou Harris/Linda Ronstadt Trio in the 80s, the (Dixie) Chics in the 90s/00s, now the Castellows. All of them evoke a special hard to describe emotional depth that makes that kind of country music a unique treasure.

Emmylou has always been my favourite but they are 3 very talented singers with distinctive voices who work so well together. I remember buying the first Trio album on release which had some great songs on it and waiting many many years for volume 2. Both great and the complete Trio collection is superb.

‘The Complete Trio Collection’ sits on the top of my music collection and should be mandatory for every music lover to add to theirs. This is how country music should be done and very few people do it well today. Ella Langley is my most recent hope for someone who “gets it” and “has it.” So many of “today’s country” artists (both female and esp the male singers) don’t have a clue and think they all have to sound the same. It’s probably more the fault of tired out producers, subpar songwriting and labels that think they understand what country music is.

I hear you my friend, but as I’ve come to realize the music industry has changed so much since we were young. I’m lucky enough to live in a city with a very vibrant musical scene. There is nothing else to do in Edmonton, so lots of people play music. Haha. But I have two small clubs I go to that host local talent, and some of these folks are just fantastic! And a lot of them are in their twenties.
Still great music out there, but sadly it’s hard for new artists to get any financial support in this modern day. To have a career you have to look and sound cookie a certain way.
I guess I’m lucky, but I can go to the Cask & Barrel or the Avery and hear something good any weekend. Harder to do at 53, but I still pull my ass off the couch and go see whoever is playing once a month.
But yeah, I do miss the days of just turning on the radio and hearing a great new singer. Now I gotta work for it.

Dolly Parton over some years if she goes she will never be replced

On a short trip tody so listened to the entire Trio collection. Great songs, great voices, a truly wonderful supergroup!
With Country great Dolly, Pop/Rock and every other type music great Linda Ronstadt, and the truly special Emmylou Harris, it would be tough to combine 3 other singers in another group with this much talent and history!
Bravo!

I have grown up singing Country music. These 3 ladies taught me harmonies, through listening to every song, I could find, that they recorded together. They all recorded for different record labels, and it was a real battle to get them to be able to record this collection!
I play mediocre guitar, and used to sing with my Mother.
Our 2 favorites were Making Believe and I Never Will Marry!
I thank all of these 3 beautiful women for these heavenly songs, and for loving Country music.🌷✝️🙏💜🦋🌷🌷🌷

I have this album. I love the 3 of them together and each one alone.

“Telling Me Lies,” from the first Trio album, really stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it.
