6th Annual Lone Star Music Awards Nominees Announced
Lone Star Music, the Texas music cornerstone that has such good taste and cool vibes that appreciation for it’s unique approach of putting the music first spreads well past the Texas border, has just announced the nominees for their 6th Annual Lone Star Music Awards, and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t hit the sweet spot in showcasing many of the artists that are helping to save country music.
The Lone Star Music Awards will be held at The Marc in San Marcos, TX on Sunday, April 27th and will feature performances from many of the nominees and many others. Last year Saving Country Music was in attendance, and can vouch that a good time was had by all.
This years awards show will feature performances by Reckless Kelly, Joe Ely, William Clark Green, Thieving Birds, Chris King, Slaid Cleaves, Bruce Robison & Kelly Willis, Zane Williams & Kylie Rae Harris!
If you want to vote for your favorite nominees, you can do so once per email address. Voting ends March 31st. ****NOTE: Voting Has Now Ended!

Now that’s an awards show I would support. Kudos to the organizers. Hopefully all these artists will see a boost of 77% of their records….

Glad to see Jason Isbell get some recognition after being snubbed at the Grammy’s. 5 nominations and he should win at least 2 (songwriter and vocalist) and possibly album of the year.
Finally saw his live show a couple months ago and was blown away. Deserves plenty of recognition.

Exploring this list is dangeroust. I listened to a few songs from the Will Callers album and bought that. I listened to the Mando Saenz song and bought that. That’s in 20 minutes! I think I’m gonna take a break for a little while.

Living in Texas I get to see this show on TV but it’s a great youtube channel to check on from time to time to make sure you’re not missing anything great going on in Texas.

I was surprised by the names I didn’t recognize, too! I downloaded Zane Williams and Shinyribs to start. Williams is pretty standard fare. Shinyribs (keep wanting to type Shinybones) is interesting. Hopefully not too interesting for me.
Sine we have hit a lull in new release cycle (I’ve had the DBT release since December!!), I’m going to keep working through this list of artists.

Just to give you a heads up on Shinyribs, it is Kev Russell from The Gourds. I’ve never listened to an album, but live it is a pretty damn good show, though very very strange as well. One of those things you really have to experience to appreciate.

Trig. why is sturgill in only 1 of your categories besides his xredit in producer.. Ive seen isbell and hes great but Sturgills show is more honest.. Isbell hid behind the curtain when it closed sending Amanda Shires isbell out to gather autograph requests…then after waiting in the snow for an hour they dissapeared with our poster that already had holly williams autograph.. anyway just venting a little..

These aren’t my categories or nominees. They are the ones picked by Lone Star Music. The fact that Sturgill is on here at all astounds me honestly. Not that he doesn’t belong here, but that I’m surprised they know about him. We have to appreciate Sturgill is still a very small time, unknown artist. Though that is changing very rapidly because of things like these nominations.

Haven’t seen all the others, but Turnpike Troubadours should receive strong consideration for Live Act. Their show that I saw was easily one of the best live performances I’ve seen in my life, let alone this year.

The thing I love about Texas ( and I live nowhere near it ) is they know some good music and actually play it on their stations. Who knew it could be done lol. As much as I love a lot of those Texas/ Red Dirts bands I would love to see Isbell and ol’ Sturgill get some love. Lincoln Durham is pretty badass too. That is all.

Where is Jason Eady’s name?
Trigger
March 3, 2014 @ 10:34 pm
I don’t have the exact dates of eligibility, but my guess is Jason Eady’s album was released too recently to be eligible for this. I was at this event last year, and Jason Eady was definitely featured and played a few songs. I’m sure next year his name will make the nominations.

Pretty cool how I got to see two of the nominated best live acts at once in Chicago last friday.
The Troubadours and American Aquarium absolutely demolished that bar.

I’m a little intrigued with Kacey Musgraves being here. I know she had a solid album and in a round about way was involved in this scene, cutting the duet with Josh Abbott and some other stuff, however I wonder if this is a grasp for LSM trying to bring in a named artist. I have no problem that Kacey was on Nashville Star or who she tours with now, but in my mind she is a little different than these other artists. The other thing is that her following has gotten a lot bigger with her national appearances, so it becomes possible that her fans could flood the voting. What if Katy Perry releases one tweet , saying “go here and vote for my girl Kacey”? I have always liked the fact that the LSM awards reward people who normally would not get the spotlight as much.

You make a real good point and I was wondering the same thing myself. But, she come up through Texas and even won the 2008 Texas Music Awards Best Female Vocalist award / http://www.texasmusicawards.org/results/2008/2008_FV_Portx1000.jpg

Yes, first off Kacey Musgraves is very much a Texas artist, though this may be hard to recognize because she rose so quickly through the ranks that her stint in Texas music was short.
The Lone Star Music Awards are not perfect, just like no award show or entity that tries to promote music is, including Saving Country Music. But I applaud Lone Star Music’s attempt to not limit anyone from their nominations just because they are not from Texas, or because they’re popular, or because they’re not necessarily country or roots. They do a great job truly asking “who is the best” and using this platform to highlight them. Shre there’s some holes in their knowledge base, and maybe it would be better to highlight someone who hasn’t received as much recognition from the industry. But if they truly think they’re the “best” then I don;t see any harm in it. Also, including big names right be smaller, lesser-known names usually has the effect of elevating all the names in people’s musical knowledge base.

If the pulled “Fuzzy” off and replaced it with “Keep the Wolves Away” it would be a better list. Other than that and the inclusion of Zana Williams it’s pretty solid.
