Questions Remain After Ella Langley Cancels Tulsa Show Amid Threats

Ella Langley has cancelled her show set for Friday, October 9th at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma after a caller threatened “great harm to the people at this event in the way of shots fired and bombs.” Even though the Tulsa Police Department had swept the arena and greater area before the call, and came out to sweep the area again after the call, out of an abundance of caution, Ella Langley’s team chose to cancel the show.

Just before 5 pm Central time, a notice went out on Ella Langley’s social media pages saying,

Due to a serious security threat involving the safety of my fans, venue personnel, and the artist, Ella Langley’s scheduled performance tonight at BOK Center in Tulsa has been canceled.

The safety and well-being of everyone involved is our absolute priority, and, after careful consideration, we have determined that the show cannot proceed. We understand the disappointment this news brings and apologize to fans who planned to attend. The safety of our fans is our foremost concern and will always come first.

Additional information and details regarding ticket refunds will be shared as soon as possible. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize the safety of all involved.

However, the Tulsa Police Department has felt the need to clarify that after sweeping the area twice, they found no credible threat, and advised Ella Langley’s crew that they didn’t see a reason to cancel the event. In a video statement by Tulsa Police Captain Richard Mulenberg, he said,

I want to first start off by saying that we did not cancel the event, and neither did the BOK Center. What happened was was every time we have an event down here, we do a pre-sweep, we work very closely with BOK security and with police officers in the street out here.

So we walk this area several times with our K-9 team, with our bomb dogs, and could not find any threat. So the event was ready to go. And then what happened was a call came in, saying that someone was going to [do] great harm to the people here at this event in the way of shots fired and bombs. So we came out again in an overabundance of caution, used our bomb dogs again, searched the entire area, we could not find a credible threat here at the BOK Center.

We advised the group that was supposed to be performing tonight that we could not find a credible threat. We would never tell anybody if we couldn’t find a credible threat to cancel their event. So they made the decision to cancel their event tonight. I’m sorry that had taken place. The most disappointing thing is that thousands of people were here for a sold-out event to come and enjoy this show, and they can’t be here. So the person who called this in was a phone call, disrupted this entire event for all these folks.

So I can tell you now, we can’t find anything here at the location that indicates that this is a credible event. We apologize to everyone who came down to the Tulsa area for this. But everything is safe.

Though it’s understandable why the Tulsa Police Department might not want to shoulder the criticism for the Ella Langley show being cancelled, it seems strange they would release a video statement so emphatically making sure the public knows they are not to blame instead of trying to encourage people to help in the investigation of who made the threats in the first place.

This invariably puts the onus on the Ella Langley camp for cancelling the show, and alludes to them being overcautious for doing so. But what we don’t know is the specific details of the threat, and how ominous or serious it might have been.

If the Ella Langley camp had ignored the threat and something happened at the event, then the would have to answer to why they didn’t take the threat seriously and proceeded with the show. The Ella Langley camp might have also been required by insurance, or the contract policy of the promoter, or the policy of contractors or vendors involved to cancel the event when such threats are made.

Whenever an event of this nature is cancelled, it inconveniences many fans, including those who drove or sometimes fly from out of state, and book hotel rooms for the show. Now the Tulsa Police Department has given these angry fans ammunition to go after Ella Langley, who might’ve had no other choice but to cancel herself.

More information is needed as to who made the decision to cancel the show, and why. But the Tulsa Police Department also needs to worry about doing their job as opposed to assigning blame and shielding themselves from criticism.

Tulsa Police threw Ella Langley under the bus, instead of centering the Tulsa Crime Stoppers number of 918-596-COPS for anyone to call with credible information on who made the death threat so they can be brought to justice.
