A Smart Remark to Katy Perry Set Chris Stapleton Straight

I won’t lie. For many months now, starting with the COVID-19 pandemic, leading into the racial and societal upheaval surrounding the death of George Floyd, which daisy chained into the contentious Presidential election, and later the fallout from the aftermath and the riots at the U.S. Capitol, it’s been really tough to wake up every morning and convince yourself that country music is an important enough topic to dedicate your time to with so much else unfolding in the world, or unraveling, as it may be.
Even when it comes to government lending assistance to struggling venues and performers, how do you square that when music is a pretty non-essential function, and meanwhile there’s so many other people out there struggling simply to survive, feed their families, keep a roof over their heads, and frontline workers out there at risk everyday.
Of course music has value, or you probably wouldn’t even be reading this at the moment, and I most certainly wouldn’t have dedicated my life to writing about it. But how to quantify that value and put it in perspective with so much else going on is a struggle, and a serious question.
This very topic came up in a recent radio interview with Chris Stapleton, where he recalled an exchange he had backstage at the 2019 Grammy Awards with pop star Katy Perry. The two were scheduled to pay tribute to Dolly Parton, when an off-handed remark by Stapleton had Katy Perry firing back at him.
“We were backstage at the Dolly Parton tribute at the Grammys and we were both performing on that, and I never met her before and we struck up a conversation waiting our turn for soundcheck backstage,” Stapleton explains.
“I said something that was self-deprecating, probably meant to be, ‘Oh, well, we’re just musicians’ or something to that effect, to which [Katy Perry] said, ‘Well, you know, that’s offensive to me and you. You do what you do. We’re healers. We have an important job.’”
Obviously, Stapleton was just making a silly, throwaway remark in his folksy demeanor, but it ended up being an epiphany for him.
“It was very enlightening in that moment, and I apologized. In no way was it meant to insult her or musicians in general. But yeah, it changed my thinking quite a bit.”
Even someone like Chris Stapleton who has made his living through music for nearly two decades needed a reminder of how a song is sometimes the only thing that can uplift the spirit of someone struggling, whether it’s financially, emotionally, or even health-wise. A song just might be the thing that allows a soul to persevere through the most difficult of times when nothing else is available, or everything else fails.
It’s still a fair conversation to have about music’s role when belts get tightened and resources are scarce. But country music grew out of the Great Depression, and was one of the few things readily available when so many other resources and opportunities were incredibly scarce. Monetarily, it’s value may be difficult to enumerate. But spiritually, music’s value is incalculable, and infinite.

Music is priceless.. Not only is it literally an expression of the human spirit.. but it’s an attempt to overcome the failure of words. Beautiful article! Thanks for this..
February 2, 2021 @ 6:22 pm
Music has been a source of sharing love, letting people show emotion and enjoy good times and bad. It heals the soul. Music has helped me get through the lows and highs of this past year of loss and new beginnings.
Music is there and always will be. Thanks to all the great artists.

Welcome to the United Nations of the offended Chris. As we sarcastically say in the south BLESS YOUR POOR LITTLE HEART ????
February 3, 2021 @ 9:34 pm
My boyfriend has trouble telling me how he feels about me, but he keeps reminding me about Chris’s two songs. The one where he drinks, because he’s lonesome. He’s far away right now,and the sweet words to “Tennessee Whiskey”. He dedicated to me.

futile stuff ( art, music, literature etc..) is life, the rest is just survival
February 2, 2021 @ 11:31 am
good job katy and chris. love to hear good music.
February 2, 2021 @ 5:40 pm
Well, maybe in Chris’ case. Katy however….. ????
February 3, 2021 @ 6:28 pm
Wow, not even 1 moment of grace? No quarter given?
Plenty of people might get as much from her music as you and I get from his, or Cody Jinks, or whomever. No reason to go out of your way to shit on it.
God I hate the internet sometimes.
February 8, 2021 @ 12:06 pm
Yeah lost wife to cancer and was lost in potty and booze for 3+ years. Luckily I’m here gotta lot to feel sorry for now. I shirked my fatherly duties. Forever sorry.
February 2, 2021 @ 11:32 am
At this time in another lockdown that has been extended yet again music has helped a great deal in keeping me sane whether it’s old albums or some of the great albums that came out since the start of the pandemic including Chris Stapletons.
Two or three times a week its beer out, headphones on and hours of great music to take my mind of the shitstorm.
February 2, 2021 @ 12:30 pm
Music (and the arts in general) DOES create jobs — both technical roles for producing and distributing music, and less obvious jobs, as teachers and leaders who serve as stewards of our health, on both a community and an individual level. Music generates resources, too, of generosity, dignity, awareness, and an acknowledgment of our responsibility to one another beyond what we can get out of each other. It has the ability to bring communities together and to help people learn to empathize. (I rarely see jobs outside of the arts, essential or otherwise, generate these kinds of resources; quite often the opposite.)
The problem seems to be that these important jobs and resources are not considered “essential” and, consequently, are under-valued in the way society currently operates. Practically speaking, no, music is not essential for keeping individual human beings *physically* alive. On the other hand, music is essential for keeping our communities alive, and I don’t think it’s far-fetched to say that keeping our communities alive is what keeps us all alive and *safe* and *well*.
(Talking only about and giving regards only to what is “essential” reminds me of prisoners, whose protection includes access only to the bare minimum, to what is considered “essential” by people who have their own agenda. Who’s to say whether music is “essential” or not, and what’s their agenda for saying so? Just keeping alive is kind of a low bar, in my opinion.)
February 3, 2021 @ 12:09 pm
Really Katie Perry ! Its not that serious you have to keep in mind also as a human being in desperate times that we’re obviously experiencing together sometimes a joke or statement is needed as a way of relief for the moment. By no means do I feel like Chris meant anything otherwise and not to be offensive but I personally would consider his music more of healing music than yours however I love you to pieces so keep in mind sometimes as I woman we also need to know when to fall back and be a little bit more sympathetic toward a situation than anticipated.
February 9, 2021 @ 10:39 am
Well said Mary!!
February 2, 2021 @ 12:46 pm
Hey Trig,
Re. Your intro. I get it, its seems out of scale, but as all your regular readers agree, its more important than ever to have something reliable and uplifting.
Thanks for doing this, its lots more helpful than discussing the crazy shit. Besides, your social opinions are great, but would have been better in print newspaper. You dig out unpleasant truths and the knee jerk defense mechanism is to comment loudly.
Back to kind of subject, i noticed on Wired and Cnet, they do the usual reviews but make it topical. “Best speakers to listen to music in lockdown”
Take care, hopefully the world will settle.
P.s. still no significant covid in Australia. Not bragging, just saying its possible.
February 2, 2021 @ 4:11 pm
“P.s. still no significant covid in Australia. Not bragging, just saying its possible.”
You’re an island. It’s coming. And no lockdown or other nonsense is going to stop it. Eat healthy, exercise, get lots of fresh air and load up on Vitamin D3 and C. Since you folks are in summer right now, get as much natural D as you can.
Oh yeah, and load up on as much good music as you can, as well. If it brings you joy, it boosts the immune system.
Good luck, and stay safe!
February 2, 2021 @ 5:12 pm
Music is a breath of fresh air and a ray of light to counterbalance these dark times. We’re all in this together.
February 2, 2021 @ 6:20 pm
Hey Jimmy,
Sure, the island and low population density helps, but covid has been here and gone.
Literally, we had over 700 cases a day for a while, we had outbreaks of the new strains and we always got them eradicated.
Melbourne was in lockdown a total 9 months, but the rest of the country has only done short ones.
Thanks for the tips, here are mine:
If the health experts say 6 feet, stay 12 feet, if they say its safe without a mask, wear one anyway. If they say its safe with a mask, don’t go there, or stay away from anyone for 2 weeks after.
Anyone in customer service should try to live by themselves as much as possible.
If the country has some weird contract tracing thing, give it a chance. Seriously, I love privacy, but if you have a phone its too late anyway.
Get tested at any sign (yes, I know not all places let you. Here you can get tested with basically no symptoms. Say you sneezed and you’ll be done)
And lastly, yes, listen to music that brings you comfort. Have a glass of wine, listen to some friendly music, and feel good that even if you miss seeing your friends, you might have saved a life today. A hero’s path is lonely and uncomfortable.
Worked for us. Best of luck with it. Again, not bragging, just might help someone somehow.
February 3, 2021 @ 4:34 am
Why is it everywhere I go some backwoods bogan is in a thread acting like they live in a utopia while the US is some third world decaying shit hole warzone? Aussies and Kiwis have to be the most annoying bunch of tips rats I’ve encountered. Fucking hell. Don’t you have a kangaroo to box or some war to lose with a bunch of emus? 🙂 hehe
February 3, 2021 @ 1:17 pm
Haha, fair enough.
Probably its because we’re still surprised.
Everyone expected us to be worst hit of all through general apathy and ineptitude, but we came out well.
We must be like that annoying kid that won his first competition, in 4th grade.
That being said, I am surprised how little attention is getting paid to the few countries that managed. Even if it was accidental, it might help to copy some things.
Off to work, my kangaroo is impatient and the vegemite sandwiches are falling out of her pouch.
February 4, 2021 @ 9:55 pm
Blackh4t, I totally agree with your assessment of how this article started out. I had to re-read it to make sure it wasn’t my imagination!
To the author of this article, I have been in radio for over 20 years and let me tell you, it’s not for the fame or money. I do other things throughout my day at work, but music is the primary focus. I am fully aware of what’s going on in my county, state, country, this world … but that is why I have dedicated my life to music. Simply put, music gets ME through life. Always has. I know this sounds hokey, but part of me has always felt if I can help make just ONE person feel a little bit better … even for just a few minutes … the length of a song… then it’s a good day!
I could go into how certain genres or songwriters are known for telling our stories, but I’m sure you already know that. However, I AM very curious as to why someone who obviously could lose their appreciation so easily for music in the face of the conditions you listed, is doing writing for something titled “SAVING country MUSIC”?
And before anyone jumps me, I’m not being a smartass. I’m honestly wondering.
February 4, 2021 @ 10:05 pm
I never lost my appreciation for music. The beginning was just an anecdote to set up the antidote of the bit of wisdom Katy Perry conveyed to Chris Stapleton about the importance of music.

Now Australia is a nationwide prison camp.
February 2, 2021 @ 1:13 pm
I believe that if you are engaged , focused and committed to something positive – your livelihood, an artistic, expressive past time or hobby , your career , your family , learning new skills etc,… you can’t help but reflect the joy and optimism that thing brings you . the arts , in general , may reflect that in a more tangible way ,but being passionate about about something positive reflects in YOU ..your outlook , your energy , your empathy , your life force . that reflection is inspiration and provides hope for anyone who is fortunate enough to witnesses it.
A songwriter , a singer , a musician blessed , to a greater or lesser degree , with a passion for those things shares that passion with us almost by osmosis . being all of those things myself , I remind myself of the value of my passion not only to myself but to others…..even if they don’t know me through that passion . it will reflect in my outlook , my behaviour , my relationships and my life force .
February 2, 2021 @ 2:00 pm
There’s nothing quite like being caught up in the right song at the right time to temporarily forget all the day to day bullshit.
February 9, 2021 @ 10:42 am
Amen!!!
February 2, 2021 @ 2:26 pm
With all due respect to Ms. Perry, give me a break. When she sets a broken bone, feeds the hungry, diagnoses a child’s illness, represents an indigent defendant in court or counsels a suicidal person, *then* she’ll be a “healer.”
Her music will have no lasting impact. Individuals may grab some personal meaning in a song here and there, but for the most part, her music is churned out by a machine focused solely on money and image, not art or healing.
February 2, 2021 @ 6:16 pm
Heyday,
You are sooooo correct. Same thing can be said for much of it. And I have been playing it for 30+ years. And thankfully, not playing her kind of rubbish.
February 3, 2021 @ 8:45 am
Thank you, Heyday! Stapleton’s comments, throwaway as they were, show how he has a healthy perspective and awareness of his career’s relative importance. Stapleton and Perry are both entertainers, which is a job that can bring joy and emotion to millions, but as you said, they aren’t in the ER treating gunshot wounds or one-on-one pulling people out of their personal crises. I’m way more impressed by entertainers that understand they are regular people with an unusual platform and not superheroes.
Also, how does Katy Perry square away her “healer” role with pushing a couple of elderly nuns out of their home so she could have it (the stress of which resulted in the death of one of them)? https://www.insider.com/katy-perry-nuns-los-angeles-convent-sale-feud-timeline-2019-6

Can’t wait for the I Kissed a Girl country version with Katy and Chris.
February 2, 2021 @ 3:09 pm
The Cleverlys would be hard to top on that one.

Cleverlys are a personal fave!

I’m just a song and dance man.
February 2, 2021 @ 3:28 pm
Nothing like being humble.
February 2, 2021 @ 3:37 pm
This may be a bit off-topic, but I would love to hear a country album from Katy somewhere down the road in her career. She did an awesome job with Kacey Musgraves on CMT Crossroads (their “Here You Come Again” cover is definitely worth a listen), and she definitely has one song (maybe more that I’ve overlooked) called “Thinking of You” that is more country than 85% of what country radio plays nowadays.
February 2, 2021 @ 5:47 pm
We DON’T NEED HER invading & ruining another genre of music. Does anyone think she truly has a great voice?? I remember her one Christian album as Katy Hudson, hence why she changed her stage name. I never bought it myself because I didn’t like her voice. Now I wish I had (unless I have the tape) because it’s a collector’s item now & goes for a pretty penny apparently….
February 3, 2021 @ 3:53 am
Hey, Taylor. I have an idea.
How about no?
February 2, 2021 @ 4:13 pm
Trigger, don’t sell yourself short. What you do is important, now more than ever. Keep the faith!
February 2, 2021 @ 4:18 pm
Music, right after or along with God, is my go to for encouragement or strength. They never fail me. Especially in those long mudnight sleepless hours.

Yes Martha! My partner in Spirit and in music. It’s definitely therapeutic ????????

February 2, 2021 @ 4:29 pm
Katy needs to take note (pun intended) of this song:
JOE, DON’T LET YOUR MUSIC KILL YA
IT’S A THING THAT’S SUPPOSED TO THRILL YA
IT’S A THING THAT’S SUPPOSED TO MAKE YOU HAPPY
TAKIN’ PILLS AND DRINKIN’ WHISKEY,
PICKIN’ CAN BE MIGHTY RISKY
JOE, DON’T LET YOUR MUSIC KILL YA
NOBODY CARES

Chris ,no worries, I think by now ,we know your heart. This has been a very challenging time for us. NEVER stop ,I am loving the new album ,very approiate.I think ,myself for sure have had to refocus and made so comments as well .Love and peace to yall .
February 2, 2021 @ 5:00 pm
I’ll listen to Chris over her- on any topic.
The least essential are those creating this hysteria and those in State capitols- yet they keep getting their pay check-
The most essential are those who go to work everyday- they pay people like Perry to perform. Period. They also pay the least essentials mentioned previously- when people like Perry (or any other arrogant jerk, in the media or State capitols) gets down off their high horse, they might, (heavy emphasis on might) be tolerable to listen to-
February 2, 2021 @ 5:46 pm
I love all genre’s of ????????. Country music is the BEST! Wish Chris Stapleton was around when I was growing up. He is the “Staple” that holds my life together in good or bad times❣️????
February 2, 2021 @ 7:55 pm
The only reason we have lock downs is because of the people Chris and Katy support. Just facts that certain populations have a higher Covid rate. They don’t care about others, yet they expect other to care more about them than anyone else. Just facts. Not opinion. Music venues would be just fine if certain populations gave just a small fraction of thought about others.
Not PC just fact. Facts are hard.
February 2, 2021 @ 8:05 pm
“how to quantify that value and put it in perspective with so much else going on is a struggle, and a serious question”
Respectfully, Trig, you are defaulting to playing defense. People want to express themselves because they’re alive, but “how do we quantify that value?” People die everyday OMG so much death I’m literally shaking why bother to create anything, you guys. Srsly!
No. The question should be put back to them: oh, so you’re saying the creativity of human beings has no real value? Oh, so the value of understanding each other is nil? Subjective reality is irrelevant now, is it?
Art dates back to the Neolithic, for Chrissakes. There were wolves at the door, literally. Imagine how ridiculously hard life was for most of humanity for most of its history — and yet we wouldn’t even KNOW that if it weren’t for artists, writers, and so on. Artists and musicians are humanity’s only serious protestors against oblivion. The “healer” remark is weak sauce. What’s most powerful, and will always be most powerful, about art is that it is a RECORD of what it was like to be alive. Art is saying WE WERE HERE to darkness and indifference!
F*** the naysayers! Stay true to saying something true and passionate about what we’re living. If things get really bad, SING THAT. The Enemy is not only saying there is no God, the Enemy is also saying there is no YOU.
To which the only respectable reply is: War.
Never give up the integrity and value of your experience. NEVER.
February 2, 2021 @ 8:08 pm
Thank You Corncaster
February 3, 2021 @ 5:41 am
Well said. A civilization without the arts is a dead thing.
February 2, 2021 @ 9:26 pm
Ok yall gonna play game on
February 3, 2021 @ 3:38 am
If Chris Stapleton only knew how many days and nights and so many of his songs (sometimes complete albums) helped me survive some of the lowest and celebrate some of the highest times in my life. An outdoor concert even with social distancing would feel like medicine that helps the mind, soul and body start to heal from this pandemic!
February 3, 2021 @ 5:12 am
At many times in my life music has literally kept me going, and yes even kept me alive. From Edith Piaf, Waylon Jennings, Tchaikovsky & Dolly & Porter to Tanya Tucker music is magic… “Everybody says say something that says something”….Stay Safe Always.
February 3, 2021 @ 6:53 am
Why apologize to a vacuous bimbo like Perry? Are people like Stapleton afraid to get cancelled and/or lacking some spine?
Perry is the personification of soulless music, a money making machine. Stapleton should have just laughed in her face.
February 3, 2021 @ 8:25 am
There is wisdom everywhere.
February 3, 2021 @ 7:34 am
Would make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, if it didn’t.
February 3, 2021 @ 8:15 am
“healers” LOL!!
February 3, 2021 @ 8:50 am
We’re healers? Lmao ????????????
February 3, 2021 @ 10:46 am
Missing the whole point as our society often does…it’s an example of humility…Chris Stapleton’s self depreciating humor, contrasted by arrogance …. Katie Perri’s obviously high self evaluation. Let’s give everyone a trophy for being the best (insert any vocation) and get over ourselves. Way too unimportant to justify a newsworthy article.
February 3, 2021 @ 2:08 pm
I am suprised Chris would really think of a musician in minor terms. I have listened to “Where Rainbows Never Die” and try to play along. I seldom finish playing as I get choked up by the words and the soulfunless of his singing. Surely he knows it does one good to know the message of the song expressed so soulful. I am glad he is willing to change his attitude. KATIE ALSO INSPIRES THE SAME WAY WITH HER S9NGS!
February 3, 2021 @ 5:27 pm
Perry is one of the “Queens” of this cancel culture group… no one gives two warm turds what Perry thinks…. your music is junk! I wish chris would’ve, like many have said here, laughed and walked away at the liberal activist turd!!
Stapleton is a true master craftsman in his field… full of soulful and great music! Katy Perry isn’t qualified to carry your bathwater!
Who ISNT tired of people like Katy Perry who seem to be offended by everything!?!? She was verbally brutal to POTUS Trump, hates conservative and Constitutional America! She is a fool…. ignore her, the Activist Dixie Chicks, and all of these “Cancel Culture Progressive” turds….
February 4, 2021 @ 3:58 am
Bragging about Katy Perry setting him straight is another new low point for him. Over the past couple of years he’s been pulled further into the Hollywood industrial entertainment complex. Now more of a Product Stapleton than an artist. I’m sure he will continue to make good music but Product Stapleton is now the new norm for how he proceeds throughout his career.
February 4, 2021 @ 6:00 am
The arts and sports both entertain.
But the arts also feed the soul with wisdom about the human condition,
While sports, on the other hand, simply entertain.
February 8, 2021 @ 9:25 pm
Chris Stapleton’s music is “healer ” quality. Katy Perry, on the other hand, is a bubblegum pop singer. Maybe tweens think her music has substance but to an adult, uh, no.
February 9, 2021 @ 3:45 am
Love both artists. Both entertaining to different people.. agree to disagree. Kindness for all artists. They bare their souls putting a soundtrack to our lives. Both entertaining and speaking their souls. Both not bashing the other. Fireworks is full of faith & doing your best go Katie. Chris has told so many stories that for so many people. Hard to have a favorite. Keep up the great work. Spead love, kindness not germs or negative effects. You never know what the person nxt to you is dealing with
February 9, 2021 @ 3:47 am
Sorry love them both. Music is for all.
November 13, 2022 @ 1:34 pm
Even though Katy Perry is right, I much prefer Chris Stapleton’s humbler outlook. I hope he stays grounded. Music is healing and musicians have a VERY important job in our screwed up world, but the minute a musician think they ARE a healer, we get a Kanye and we don’t need
any more of those. Stay humble without your head in the clouds.
