A Special Note from “Trigger”

Hello World,
I’ve got some big news, at least for those who may care.
First let me say how incredibly appreciative I am to you, the Saving Country Music reader, for allowing me to be able to write about music for a living as a primary occupation. It is a dream come true, an incredible privilege, and something that I most certainly do not take for granted.
I am very aware as I log in each morning that many of you are starting much more meaningful, and much more difficult occupations as I pursue an elective way of living that allows me to listen to music all day. For this, I am deeply grateful, and probably don’t communicate this enough.
As long-time readers know, I have always refused to operate a merch shop for Saving Country Music. The independent country revolution is very much funded off of T-shirts, koozies, and hoodies. It’s what helps get your favorite artists down the road. I’ve never wanted to compete with those artists by offering my own merch for sale.
I’ve also staunchly refused to implement a subscription, Patreon, or paywall approach to the website that may actively or inadvertently take music dollars out of the hands of music creators, and will limit who can benefit from Saving Country Music’s content. I want to be a facilitator for people to find music that will enrich their lives while supporting the artistry of independent performers, not to be a middle man skimming a transactional share out of the process.
Incidentally, Saving Country Music also carries one of the lightest ad sets for any website that is not run as a nonprofit. There are no popups, drop downs, click thru’s, or video streaming ads, or any ads whatsoever in the reading space. Yes, Saving Country Music still has ads and still has to make money, if for no other reason than to pay for the gargantuan server necessary to keep the some 7,700+ published articles online, and to make the articles quickly available to the many thousands of people who come here every day.
For many years, folks have asked what they can do to further support my efforts, and I’ve always said simply, “read.” Your presence here is payment enough, and generally speaking this is all the effort needed to keep Saving Country Music going. Also, your understanding that we may not always agree but that my heart is always in the right place is also appreciated.
But for all of those who’ve asked over the years what else you can do, or that generally just want to help support my writing, this is your opportunity.
On March 7th, I will be publishing a novel called Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board. This is a fiction novel of the literary genre, and has absolutely nothing to do with country music, whatsoever. In fact, music is only mentioned in the novel briefly. Instead, it works like the biography of a professional thief who decides to shift his goals to more altruistic purposes. But it’s also much more than that.
Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board is a propulsive story that is just as much an adventure as it is a self-help guide. It explores subjects such as self-discipline, dreaming, drugs, the encroachment of technology into daily life, and eventually, catastrophic natural disasters, terrorism, and Armageddon. “‘Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board’ is much more than child’s play. It’s the key to unlocking the mysteries and meaning of life…” is the official blurb, and just like the message behind this novel, it is something that I believe in.

Along with refusing to operate a merch store on Saving Country Music, I also have never mentioned, let alone promoted, any of the musical endeavors I may have been a part of, or any other personal pursuit through the website. If I have participated in a musical project of some sort, then I have recused myself from covering it here, aside from perhaps listing it in release radars and such as to not injure the other creators involved.
I am also making an exception in this case because Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board really doesn’t have to do with music, but my writing, which is what this website is ultimately all about. But also, I really believe in this project, and want it to reach as many people as possible. And since I’m releasing this thing completely independently, I have to use whatever resources I have at my fingertips.
I had other options of how to release this book. But just like your favorite independent band or artist, I want to retain control over this work. Also as a previously-published author, I know the rigors and pitfalls of the publishing industry first hand, and don’t want to go through them again.
Similar to trying to help out your favorite band or artist, pre-orders of this novel are pretty important for helping to spread the word, and to help raise a blip on the radar. So if you feel so inclined to pre-order, it would be a great help.
For $2.99 you can pre-order this novel in digital form. This would be a big gesture, and a tiny penance for all of the (hopefully) value you have received from Saving Country Music over the years. It is also available in paperback form.
Pre-order on Kindle
Pre-order the Paperback on Amazon
Pre-order via BookBaby (direct)
Pre-order on Barnes & Noble
Over the coming weeks, I will also be posting excerpts from the novel to hopefully get folks who are curious but not committed to getting this novel interested enough to pull the trigger. This isn’t about the money, but getting attention to this work. For folks hard up for cash but that still want to read the book, shoot me an email and I’ll make sure you get a copy upon the release. Eventually, Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board will also be available in audiobook form, and signed copies will be made available too.
I have a much more involved post about some philosophical changes being made here at Saving Country Music coming up soon. And yes, this novel is just one of many other things beyond articles about country music that are on the way.
Once again, thanks for all of your support over the years, and now let’s get back to the music.

Can’t wait to read this trig, and I’m fired up for you. Thank you for all the value you have provided to my life!
This novel is going to rip even harder than a certain album I like
January 30, 2023 @ 9:01 am
Ordered Paperback. You best sign it.
January 30, 2023 @ 9:03 am
TLDR, but I ordered the book
January 30, 2023 @ 9:04 am
trigger, you are an even more special talent than i realized yesterday.
wonderful!
January 30, 2023 @ 9:34 am
Was great to meet you Marcel.
January 30, 2023 @ 9:06 am
Very cool, I can’t even fathom the skill and talent required to write and publish a book
January 30, 2023 @ 9:14 am
you can ‘publish’ anything you want thru bookbaby
January 30, 2023 @ 9:44 am
Gentile is right. In the internet age, being a “published author” really is sort of a meaningless distinction. I was a published author a few times over before I even started Saving Country Music, and the two companies I worked with both went bankrupt because of the internet, I got paid pennies on the dollar for my work, and retained no rights to it. That is why I chose to go it alone this time.
With Amazon’s publishing program, anyone can release a book these days, and many do. There’s a whole industry that works to hose aspiring would-be “published authors” by helping to release books nobody will ever read. But big publishing houses can be just as sharky.
Since I have an established audience, I’m choosing to go the independent route. Time will tell if this was a smart or foolish decision.
January 30, 2023 @ 4:06 pm
Well, this is interesting…
Will be pre-ordering.
“Time will tell if this was a smart or foolish decision.”
It is a passion project.
Hardly think seeing it through could be considered foolish.
Wishing you success.
January 30, 2023 @ 8:11 pm
Easiest purchase I’ve ever made.
No joke your writing opened my eyes to many of my heroes. Musicians that I have traveled far to amazing venues for and experiences I’ll never forget. Hell I’m taking off work tomorrow to go see Mike and the Moonpies in Charleston.
Bought a paper copy for you, and one for my fiancé. Can’t wait to check it out!
January 30, 2023 @ 9:26 am
As a struggling writer myself, who loves this site, I’m pre-ordering for kindle soon as I get home.
January 30, 2023 @ 9:30 am
1. I will be ordering as soon as I get back from work!
2. It seems like there is a good opportunity to make some bootleg SCM merch…
January 30, 2023 @ 9:45 am
Hey, if you want a Saving Country Music T-shirt, make one yourself. I won’t sue you. The Next Waltz put out “Save Country Music” T-shirts a while back. More power to them.
January 30, 2023 @ 9:34 am
Will order for sure.
With your apparently quick reading of every comment posted here, let alone the articles and road trips, I have no idea how you find the time and focus.
Are you going to be reading the audiobook?
January 30, 2023 @ 9:46 am
Agreed. Guy’s an animal. Convinced he doesn’t sleep or eat and is instead sustained by the sonic frequencies of pedal steel and telecaster riffs.
January 30, 2023 @ 9:47 am
I did read the audiobook myself. But it occurred to me this book is related much better in the written form, so I want to put that out front first, and follow up with the audiobook for folks who will never read it otherwise.
January 30, 2023 @ 10:40 pm
Just took care of my Amazon preorder, Trigger. Absolutely looking forward to reading your newest book!! Keep doing what you’re doing, too!!!
January 30, 2023 @ 9:49 am
Are there going to be paper back versions of the book? I really am not into digital down loads, if not I may get it, not into digital download ing any of my entertainment, and would be more than happy to pay regular price for a paper back version.
January 30, 2023 @ 9:59 am
There are paperback versions available through Amazon, BookBaby, Barnes & Noble, and other book retailers. I put links to Amazon, BookBaby, and Barnes & Noble in the article.
January 31, 2023 @ 12:00 pm
Thank you , look forward to reading it.
January 30, 2023 @ 9:52 am
Hell yes. Is BookBaby better from your side than Amazon, Trigger? I’m definitely ordering a paperback version but wanted to help you the best way possible.
January 30, 2023 @ 10:01 am
Six one, half dozen the other. BookBaby takes less of a percentage, but the more orders through Amazon, the more visibility they’ll give it.
Thanks everyone for ordering.
January 30, 2023 @ 10:00 am
Congrats and will preorder. With the serious article title I was thought you were shutting down the site. I don’t think a single person would begrudge you selling merch. It wouldn’t take away anyone else’s money.
January 30, 2023 @ 10:14 am
I agree. If anything offer a one time donation tab that allows any amount the person wants to donate to savingcountrymusic.com. I would absolutely hate for this site to stop for any reason. It wouldn’t bother me at all if you started a Patreon or something to get extra income. You have to live to and wouldn’t respect that.
January 30, 2023 @ 11:02 am
The truth is, I am completely unmotivated by money. I just don’t care. As long as I can make enough money to keep the site going and do what I want to do, I’m fine. Of course, more money is always better than less money, but I have plenty. If there was ever a situation where the future of the website was in jeopardy and I needed to raise some cash or go under, I probably would consider other streams of revenue. But until that time, I’ll save the good will for a rainy day.
I appreciate the interest though.
January 30, 2023 @ 10:29 am
looking forward to checking this out
January 30, 2023 @ 10:30 am
Pre-ordered–I wish you’d change your mind on merch, though.
January 30, 2023 @ 11:04 am
I imagine someone goig to a show, seeing someone wearing a SCM t shirt and then going to check the site out and opening their mind to hundreds of new artists they might never have heard of. Money for SCM+More money for artists, Win win.
January 30, 2023 @ 5:20 pm
That’s how I think of it! I get Trigger’s point–if I buy a shirt from him, maybe I don’t buy a shirt or an album from an artist. But also, looking at my music shelf, there are artists like Alex Williams or Nick Shoulders who wouldn’t have gotten a dime of my money if I hadn’t read about them here. So wearing that shirt, getting the name of the site out there more, could be a greater benefit overall.
January 30, 2023 @ 5:53 pm
Look, I’m not saying I will never sell merch. It’s just something I don’t feel comfortable doing. I get accused by some of posting certain things to “make a bunch of money” as it is.
Also, I am a writer. That’s what I want to spend my time doing. Selling merch would just be another thing to juggle. Even if I had some fulfillment company do it for me, it’s more accounting, more emails, more hassle.
All that said, I appreciate that folks want to spread the word. That is why I have been giving away T-shirts to folks I meet at festivals and shows, if they’re readily at hand. I gave away half a dozen this week at Mile 0 Fest, will probably give away some more at Key Western and Ameripolitan in the coming weeks. So if you want one, hunt me down. While supplies last.
Maybe I’ll do some sort of SCM merch bundle with signed copies of the book in the future. We’ll see.
January 30, 2023 @ 4:43 pm
Having some SCM gear would save that problem of having to decide whose shirt to wear to a show. Is it ok to wear Jinxes hat to a Ward Davis show? Of course. But wearing an SCM hat would provoke conversation to find out who all there is in on our dirty little secret. I think a shirt with “music wine snob” on the back would make for a nice inside joke too
January 30, 2023 @ 10:38 am
“a professional thief chooses to reverse his ethical alignment and starts using his skills for altruistic purposes”
“uncovering a nefarious underground syndicate that implicates those in the highest reaches of society and power.”
.
So, you’ve written a novel based on the show “Leverage”?
January 30, 2023 @ 10:42 am
No.
January 30, 2023 @ 10:53 am
Sounds pretty interesting. I’ll definitely have to check it out.
January 30, 2023 @ 11:11 am
Congrats on this career achievement! I will purchase a physical copy so that when I finish, it can reside on the shelf between the only other books I’ve read in the last 10 years being the autobiographies of The Boss and Keef. And yes, reading the title of this article made my heart jump into my throat with concern. Long live SCM! Please don’t do that again Trigger.
January 30, 2023 @ 11:23 am
As a blind reader, I am very much looking forward to this in audiobook form! Will also just love the opportunity to contribute in someway, as I absolutely love this blog!
January 31, 2023 @ 1:13 pm
I’m blind as well!
January 31, 2023 @ 1:18 pm
I have another blind reader, and she said that Apple Books also offers an automatic audio option. The audiobook will come out shortly after the book itself. The production is being finished up now.
January 30, 2023 @ 11:36 am
Done.
Thanks for what you do. This site has learned me more about County music than anything else and your main playlist is in constant “rotation” on my phone. Keep up the great work!
January 30, 2023 @ 12:05 pm
Order the book and then give the Boomswagglers ‘Heartbreaking Places in My Mind’ a spin while you’re at it. It’s a great album.
January 30, 2023 @ 12:16 pm
For $2.99, I’ll order it sight unseen, with no reviews or comments from anyone, apart from what’s written above.
January 30, 2023 @ 12:24 pm
I want a book but will wait for the autographed one.
January 30, 2023 @ 12:44 pm
Looking forward to it Trigger! Just pre-ordered it.
January 30, 2023 @ 1:20 pm
Pre-ordered paperback on Amazon! I’ll get you to sign it in person one day.
January 30, 2023 @ 1:37 pm
Pre-ordered the paperback. I love the feel of a book in my hand even though I own several Kindle readers. I’ve always enjoyed you writing, Trigger. P.S. not even a limited edition tee shirt?
January 30, 2023 @ 3:31 pm
I’m the sane way! Ironically, I love digital/ streaming for music (my passion), but need the physical product for books. I think it’s because I read in odd places and like to mark up the pages (highlighter, notes) and bend the corners (I’m sure you can do this on a kindle too).
January 30, 2023 @ 1:42 pm
Pre-ordered via Amazon! I’ll second what so many have already said, beyond expressions of gratitude for the tireless work you do to raise awareness and visibility of so many great artists: Here’s hoping to get mine signed in the future, and, my good lord, Lorrie, don’t EVER give me a panic attack like that again, Trig!
January 30, 2023 @ 1:48 pm
OMG! How exciting. Have pre-ordered via Book Depository, who do free international shipping. This is only the second pre-order I’ve ever done. The other is for Pamela Anderson’s autobiography, due to drop on 31 January. Wanted to show you both some love ❤️
January 30, 2023 @ 2:10 pm
You didn’t share this nugget last week at Mile O Fest. You are good at keeping a secret! Will get a copy.
January 30, 2023 @ 2:36 pm
If this book is anything like your writing on this site, then it’s an instant preorder. Done and done.
Also for the record, I would wear the heck out of an SCM hat.
January 30, 2023 @ 2:45 pm
Best wishes on this endeavor.
January 30, 2023 @ 3:39 pm
Congrats Trig. This article made me wonder what musical projects you’ve previously been involved in though. I guess that’s a question that may not be answered. Hope the book is a big success!
January 30, 2023 @ 4:53 pm
The Boomswagglers
January 30, 2023 @ 11:36 pm
Thanks, couldn’t remember their name to save my fat ass.
January 31, 2023 @ 7:37 am
I don’t know the extent of Trig’s production work but remember his name in Possessed by Paul James’ There Will be Nights When I’m Lonely album as a producer or engineer or something. I’m at the office so can’t hunt down the copy and specify what his role was.
January 31, 2023 @ 3:51 pm
I heard he “ghost writes” songs for Michael Jackson Montgomery.
January 30, 2023 @ 3:41 pm
Congratulations! That is fantastic news. Will you be putting it on Draft2Digital?
January 30, 2023 @ 5:54 pm
Not sure what Draft2Digital is, but I will check it out. It should be available at most major booksellers.
January 31, 2023 @ 8:39 am
They’ll hook you up with all the big platforms– Apple, B&N, Kobo, Scribd and several others, plus two major library providers, Overdrive & Hoopla. They’re a great service.
January 30, 2023 @ 4:15 pm
I ordered the Kindle version but I wish there was a way I could pay the author a little extra like I do for some of the amazing artists he’s turned us on to. He’s too humble to have a “tip jar” and let us flood him with $$$.
January 30, 2023 @ 4:19 pm
I’m not much on reading anymore but maybe I’ll check it out. Anything to support the cause.
January 30, 2023 @ 5:35 pm
Pre-ordered; can’t wait for Mar 7th to roll around!
January 30, 2023 @ 5:53 pm
I like the cover art.
Love glyphs.
Guess a clue will not be given, before …?
January 30, 2023 @ 6:28 pm
Pre-ordered from B&N to help make a splash!
January 30, 2023 @ 8:08 pm
I’m happy to support your work. Ordered the paperback.
January 30, 2023 @ 8:32 pm
I’ll definitely buy a copy, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want the t-shirt too (and no, I can’t draw stick figure, so I cannot design one myself).
February 1, 2023 @ 9:36 pm
Ordering paperback. Thank you for your dedication to this site. Also, I really appreciate not being inundated by pop ups and ribbons while on here.
January 31, 2023 @ 1:09 am
Happy to have pre-ordered a copy. As a Western New Yorker, I don’t get to learn about many good bands or artists on the ground and you have introduced me to some of my favorites and I find your writing exceptional.
January 31, 2023 @ 3:21 am
Congratulations, Trig! I hope your novel has at least as many readers as your website.
January 31, 2023 @ 3:53 am
I am not a Kindle guy, I love to read proper books. I can`t yet pre-order the paperback on Amazon Germany, but it is on my watchlist. Once it is published, I am sure there will be a way – it is Amazon, after all.
Really looking forward to it. I love this blog and the music I have found through it, so I guess the novel will be pretty good. Thanks!!!
February 1, 2023 @ 3:34 am
That was fast. Now I could pre-order the paperback – and I did!
January 31, 2023 @ 4:19 am
Great news! gonna get a paperback version for sure!
I actually work in a library for a living, too bad it’s in Rome or i would have made a promo window to show your novel!
January 31, 2023 @ 6:32 am
Preordering that book is by far the easiest decision I’ve made all week. Excited to read it.
January 31, 2023 @ 6:53 am
Since, as I have proclaimed here, many times, you are the most objective journalist I’ve ever read, period, ordering it is a no brainer… but, dang, I’d love to have it signed, for posterity.
January 31, 2023 @ 6:59 am
That’s funny, I made a joke about that old parlor trick on Friday, hadn’t thought about it in years.
January 31, 2023 @ 7:02 am
Ordered the paper back via amazon! Can’t wait to get it in my hands and tell others about it…
January 31, 2023 @ 7:06 am
Trig,
Congratulations on this.
Did you used to review Corningware by any chance? There’s a Kyle Coroneos who reviewed Corningware, and I’ve always figured that was you.
You’ve got me curious about this philosophical change you mention. I hope it means you’re going to take a more hardline stance against all enemies of C(c)ountry Music.
January 31, 2023 @ 1:15 pm
In a previous life, I was an antique/collectible dealer/estate sale coordinator/elderly advocacy worker, and part of my job was to evaluate the value of certain items. I did not “review” Corning Ware. I put a book together to identify and value Corning Ware items for dealers and appraisers such as myself. I know it seems like a weird non sequitur to country music, and people have given me shit for it over the years. But it was actually the first time I became a published author, I’m really proud of it, and copies now sell for $129.00 on Amazon, so I did something right.
January 31, 2023 @ 7:23 am
Nuff said, ordering now. Rock on Trigger
January 31, 2023 @ 7:25 am
Trigger/Kyle…. not trying to steal your thunder, but a couple of things I want to say.
1) I can relate to “the money is not important”… I’ve been that way my whole life. The projects I’ve undertaken for no pay are too many to remember, even and especially, playing/writing songs and singing. The artist I hang with all want to be paid for their effort… I don’t do it for fame or fortune, but for posterity.
2) I don’t know a lot of people, maybe 50, at any one time, but the number of people I do know, who refuse to read, anything, is astounding and disheartening. I know 2 people, currently (and I’ve known them for 50+ years), who actually read, for pleasure, entertainment and information- we live in a 30 second sound bite world and it not only shows…. it blows my mind.
I’m going to link this article on face book… not that it will get read, but I have to do it, because the “friends” on face book know I read SCM since I reference it in real life.
January 31, 2023 @ 7:55 am
It’s on face book
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100080168617475
and a little guitar message board I frequent… it doesn’t have many active members, but they are good people… and the number of views threads/posts get is pretty good too.
Hope these posts generate interest in the book and SCM.

January 31, 2023 @ 8:07 am
Hell yeah im preordering when i get off for sure. If it wasnt for this site and its readers i wouldnt have been introduced too soo much awesome music.
January 31, 2023 @ 9:15 am
No itty bitty clue, on the predominant hieroglyph on the book cover?
Hmmm?
“You’re killing me, Smalls.”
January 31, 2023 @ 1:16 pm
I’ll say that it is a very common cave marking that can be found all around the world, and that is its significance.
January 31, 2023 @ 1:34 pm
Ok.
January 31, 2023 @ 11:02 am
Thank you Trigger for the most interesting and informative website on country music.
I ordered my copy, looking forward to reading your book.
January 31, 2023 @ 11:02 am
Copy ordered and article retweeted. Thanks for all you’ve done over the years Trig. I would have never found all my favorite music if I hadn’t found this site 12 years ago.
January 31, 2023 @ 11:35 am
I appreciate you Trigger. There are very few folks like you out there. Most times greed and fame drive a person. You have taken a different path and an I am very thankful to have found your site. The music you bring to folks for free is something else. Keep doing what you are doing and I will certainly being buying your novel.
January 31, 2023 @ 3:32 pm
Of course I’ll be reading this. Introduced me to a musical genre that has changed my life in the best way possible.
I read literary fiction all the time so I can’t wait, especially because you are clearly a strong writer and care what others have to say. Can tell this novel will say something.
And if it’s trash, the least I owe you is 20 dollars for a website I frequent
January 31, 2023 @ 6:11 pm
Trigger: You may be the hardest working person in country music (journalism); really interest to check out another side of your writing.
About SMC: In some articles on the site, the phrase ‘Saving Country Music’ sounds more of a group or collective – In my mind, I see the site being more or less synonymous with you the individual (which is good with me). Just curious, have you ever considered brining in other writers or guest columnist for different perspectives or bring in new readers?
Thanks again for all of the great writing!
January 31, 2023 @ 7:37 pm
I do run contributions upon occasion. Ken Morton Jr. usually contributes a couple of interviews every year, last year I ran multiple photo blogs from Red Rocks, and the Turnpike Troubadours arena show with contributions from others. I always consider contributions when they’re sent to me, but I don’t really have a budget to pay other writers, so I don’t actively solicit for it.
January 31, 2023 @ 7:45 pm
I always enjoy your writing. I just ordered 10 copies for my book club. They are rough critics but I am looking forward to the discussion.
January 31, 2023 @ 8:36 pm
Thanks Janise.
February 1, 2023 @ 8:04 am
It is wonderful to read all of the comments that substantiate how highly respected you are. You, …Mr. Kyle Trigger AWESOME … exemplify: highly skilled, conscientious, unbelievably hardworking, and non-greedy! Wow! Best wishes in everything you do.
February 1, 2023 @ 10:22 am
What is the image on the cover of? It appears to be ancient inscriptions depicting a prehistoric global plasma event. What is the origin please? Thanks.
February 1, 2023 @ 3:55 pm
Someone is very hot.
February 1, 2023 @ 1:05 pm
Not only will I buy the book but I would be fully supportive of you starting a patreon or some other revenue-generating mechanism. We all appreciate your service to our little community, but a man’s gotta eat. I read this web site every day. Every. Single. Day. I would not mind the opportunity to make a voluntary contribution to keep it going.
February 2, 2023 @ 3:10 am
A $10 Amazon gift certificate was my reward for filling out a bank survey. A few minutes later, I saw this post. Spent my GC on a paperback pre-order. Easy come, easy go. Look forward to the read and feel good for helping in some small way by contributing to the site.
February 2, 2023 @ 6:16 am
Thanks a lot, Trig, and congratulations on your new project
Just pre-ordered it
February 2, 2023 @ 10:25 pm
Done. What a pleasure to read this thread of comments and see the shared esteem, affection, and gratitude.
February 3, 2023 @ 8:29 am
Done & Ordered. … (a paperback for each of us. And — free shipping to Canada when ordering more than one.)
February 5, 2023 @ 10:53 am
