Billy Strings Addresses Alleged Groping Incidents in Crowds at His Concerts

Billy Strings has addressed incidents of alleged groping and sexual assault at this concerts after numerous social media posts from fans addressing the behavior went viral, and specifically about a Billy Strings superfan named James Smiley.
The most high-profile accusation came from a fan with the Instagram name jenny_jah who posted on Wednesday, September 30th,
I was sexually assaulted by James Smiley, the self-assumed ‘mayor’ of the Billy Strings community. He is a pervert, pedophile, and predator. Stop making these people feel comfortable in our communities.
I have been drugged multiple times in the Billy Strings pit. Each time James Smiley was present and would not stop turning around to watch me throughout the show, as if in wait. Women/Girls, Beware! Reference Reddit for countless other victims who have spoken-up about this man but have since been brushed under the rug. Reference the seductive messages sent to 13 year old girls after ‘showing them the ropes’ at a show. Reference the people who have been bullied out of being up front at a concert.
To identify: Smiley is the grey bearded convicted felon who will be walking around venues shirtless, wearing an open robe as if the world is his bedroom. His voice is as harsh as the toes that will be on display. He described his spirit animal to me as the Honry Toad, which about sums it up.
His henchman Jordan Johnson has also been trying to silence the recent accounts of abuse from his X girlfriend and teenage daughter. His daughter is safe and out of the house. His X has refused to take down statements, despite Jordan and “prominent’ community member coercion. Like-minded people stand together.
What is for certain is that James Smiley is the “self-proclaimed mayor of the Billy Strings scene.” He had a podcast (now deleted) that proclaimed as much, and anyone who’s attended Billy Strings shows anywhere in the United States likely has seen Smiley on the very front rail of concerts right in front of the stage, and often shirtless and in a bathrobe. Anger and allegations against Smiley have been swirling for years, including at one point a fellow fan starting a petition to “recall” Smiley as the “mayor” of the Billy Strings scene.
A two-year-old Reddit thread also includes numerous allegations from young women saying they were harassed by Smiley.

The bass player for Billy Strings, Royal Massat, spoke up in the comments of the viral Instagram post, saying, “Thank you for bravely speaking up about this. I am disgusted to hear these accounts of abuse and can only imagine how many of his victims have been silenced by his posse and intimidated by his “stature” in the scene. I hope others with similar experiences are emboldened by your example to speak up as well. I am an ally and will do everything in my power to address this and hopefully restore the sacred and safe space that our shows should be.”
Then on Thursday evening (10/1), Billy Strings also addressed the situation, even if somewhat ambiguously. He said in part,
I usually try to keep my head down, and play guitar, keep this about the music. It’s kind of what I’ve always wanted to do. I never set out to be any authority figure. But I realize as this community grows, my following grows, and this community we’ve all built together, whether I like it or not, I am the leader, and I have a responsibility to try to curate this and try to make this a safe space for everybody.
I’m not going to accept any threatening, dangerous, or harmful behavior of any kind, period. My team and I will do everything in our power to make sure that that’s what happens. I can’t see what happens in the crowd. There’s thousands of people out there. I think this is a community and we all need to work together to make sure this is a safe space. I’ll do my part. You do yours. We can all work together to make sure that if you see something at a show, to say something … I just want people to be able to come together and have a good time without feeling threatened or unsafe.
I’ve walked through the crowd myself and had someone grab my ass … I learned in kindergarten to keep my hands to myself. And I can’t believe this needs to be said so much, but consent is a big thing. I think everyone has the right to come to a concert and feel safe … I’m going to do everything I can to make sure this is a safe place for people to come and have a good time, dance, and listen to music.
Many praised Billy Strings for addressing the situation. A few others said that Strings had not gone far enough, and needed to call out the alleged abusers directly, though doing so could put Strings in the position of slander/defamation if he cannot directly corroborate or prove the allegations. Either way, the allegations are disturbing, though it does appear that James Smiley has likely deleted much of his online presence in the wake of the allegations. It remains to be seen if he’s still welcomed at Billy Strings shows.

There were lots of hangers-on like this during the Grateful Dead years. Good riddance. Watch the documentary on Netflix for gritty details.
No one will miss these losers. They’re a stain and keep even more people away from live shows, especially women.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:07 am
Wavy Gravy comes to mind.
October 4, 2026 @ 10:14 am
Wavy is not a perv. Not sure why you’re trying to imply that he is. He and his wife Jah continue to contribute to communities in meaningful ways even in their very advanced ages.
October 4, 2026 @ 12:35 pm
Wavy is a hanger-on who dresses as a clown and runs a hippie commune for the CIA.
October 1, 2026 @ 8:57 pm
As someone who has been groped multiple times at shows over recent years, I am relieved that more scrutiny is being brought to this sort of behavior: especially in light of the “Cornell Seven” headline/unfolding investigation.
Strings responded about as well as you can expect him to until more evidence is gathered against Smiley. Hopefully he’s barred from attending further concerts regardless.
October 2, 2026 @ 3:39 pm
Nothing was illegal/she consented to everything according to her in multiple statements btw
Absolute sham and another L for women’s PR
October 2, 2026 @ 6:43 pm
Are you referring to the Cornell gang rape? No one consents to 7 pathetic losers. They advertised it. “Free pussy” Someone responded “Is the store still open?” How anyone can defend these scum is mind boggling. I hope their families feel shame. You, Bob, disgust me, if you are defending them.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:56 pm
In her own statements and messages she says she willingly participated in the drugs and sex. She said none of the acts were illegal in her own text messages. In her text messages she said she had a great time with them and told one of them she wanted to see him again and smoke with him soon.
Not to mention she changed her story way after the fact. It’s an obvious case of regret. You disgust me for falling for such a slimeball who wants to destroy other’s lives for something she agreed to do.
October 3, 2026 @ 5:49 pm
That is utterly false. The NY times article explains how the campus police withheld info. She literally told them she was raped. Rape apologist.
October 4, 2026 @ 10:17 am
An impaired person cannot consent BOB.
Thanks for telling the whole world that you are a disgusting piece of trash that would have taken advantage of her if you were there too.
I hope you do not have children.
October 4, 2026 @ 10:54 am
It’s literally all true. I’m begging you to use Google and your brain and not get sucked into outrage mobs.
She told police that LONG AFTER she told them a different story, and told the guys she enjoyed her experience and wanted to hang out with one of them again “minus the ketamine”
October 3, 2026 @ 9:02 am
“No one consents to 7 pathetic losers.”
No one?
What kind of sheltered world do you live in?
Take the L, Doug.
October 3, 2026 @ 9:10 am
Folks, none of this has to do with the incidents at Billy Strings concerts. Let’s please move on.
October 3, 2026 @ 10:41 am
Nadia introduced the topic.
October 2, 2026 @ 8:50 pm
James Smiley is that you?
October 3, 2026 @ 10:59 pm
What is wrong with you? Take that disgusting crap someplace else.
October 4, 2026 @ 10:56 am
Take your outrage slop nothingburger somewhere else
October 4, 2026 @ 11:30 am
There oughta be a law.
October 4, 2026 @ 4:19 am
We learn through education and shame. Not criminal prosecution.
October 4, 2026 @ 10:18 am
Clearly no one has learned….
October 4, 2026 @ 10:11 am
Really Bob? An impaired person cannot consent Bob. Say that to yourself a thousand times, and then keep on saying it.
I hope you don’t have a daughter.
Shame on you.
October 4, 2026 @ 10:29 am
And conversely, then, an impaired person cannot beheld responsible for commiting a crime.
October 4, 2026 @ 10:55 am
Then the men who were all drunk couldn’t consent either? So she r*ped them too?
October 5, 2026 @ 10:58 am
Goddammit dude, you sound like a real chode.
October 3, 2026 @ 8:20 am
More and more revelations has the Cornell case looking like the Duke Lacrosse smear campaign.
October 3, 2026 @ 12:57 pm
Kyle, I was not going to reply, but this cannot go unchallenged. I swear that this will be my last comment on this. Regardless of this woman’s level of inebration and what she may or may not have said, the fraternity advertized it to it’s members via Snapchat that there was “Free pussy” upstairs. Replies included, “Shop still open?” and “Like you can walk in and whip it out rn” There was also a photo of the woman in the room. Multiple people became aware of what was occuring, but no one did anything to stop it. I would be ashamed and disgusted if my son or grandson did nothing. How would you defenders feel if your sons were involved or knew?
It relates to the Billy Strings story in that people had to be aware of James Smiley’s behavior and did nothing. This manosphere bullshit must end.
October 4, 2026 @ 7:53 am
The poster who doesn’t what to talk politics always has a disclaimer on why he has to talk politics. Classic.
The AG dropped the case in 2024.
Then it was reopened for political reasons.
Orgies are disgusting but they aren’t illegal.
Matt Walsh has covered this well.
October 5, 2026 @ 2:25 pm
matt walsh covered it?!?! oh cool! /s
turns out its exactly the people you expect to be making excuses in this thread (losers).
October 3, 2026 @ 5:50 pm
Yeah because putting k on your 🍆 and raping someone is the same
October 1, 2026 @ 9:46 pm
What practically can be done? Can they ban this man from his concerts? Can they obtain a restraining order? Either way they’re going to need to be prepared with ample proof and witnesses or else they’ll get in legal trouble.
They could hire a security person to literally follow him around without knowledge, and then the moment he does something illegal, have him removed, and hopefully capture it on tape. But this doesn’t sound as easy as it should be.
October 1, 2026 @ 10:10 pm
I’m sure they can 86 this guy or guys from concerts, just like a bar 86’s a drunk that is constantly starting fights or harassing women. My guess is that’s already been done by management, if only to save face.
October 2, 2026 @ 3:34 am
Right, and the social pressure on this dude in the lots and at the shows will almost certainly be pretty harsh even if he doesn’t get 86’ed, or before he does.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:44 am
careful with that 86 talk, trig. someone will think you’re trying to assassinate the president.
October 2, 2026 @ 7:48 am
Yes he can be banned from concerts. Venues are private establishments. It’s unfortunately pretty common for young female artists to give venue staff names/pictures of people who are not allowed in. Usually stalkers/creeps.
October 1, 2026 @ 10:17 pm
The good parts of concerts are outweighed by the bad these days. With items being thrown around the arena and an apparent groping epidemic, it sounds like you need a hard hat, chastity belt and pepper spray if you hope to survive until the encore.
I do wonder how you can be drugged in the pit. Especially multiple times. Maybe look into watching the show from a different location in the future.
October 2, 2026 @ 7:43 am
Yes, going to a concert comes with a lot of risks these days – those that you mentioned, plus last minute cancellations and weather events. I think the economy is the primary driver of blue dot fever but think these factors are contributing too.
October 1, 2026 @ 11:10 pm
I am not sure he can say more than he has said. Those abused need to take action at the concert and security needs to be alert to any allegations made and take action.
October 4, 2026 @ 10:26 am
So we ladies should just go to security every time we get touched inappropriately at a concert?
That’s your plan?
Because guys shouldn’t be expected to act appropriately ever?
I feel like guys should do a better job of protecting women from this shit. ALL guys, not just security.
How much do you think you could enjoy the show if you also had to be protecting yourself from this shit during the show?
You are being pathetic.
October 1, 2026 @ 11:32 pm
I was very glad when I saw Billy String’s message about this matter. He’s a terrific human being and he said everything he could in the best way possible. I’m pretty sure his crew will take care of the problem.
I also was very glad when I saw this article. Thank you Trigger for your prompt intervention on this topic.
October 2, 2026 @ 10:07 am
“I also was very glad when I saw this article. Thank you Trigger for your prompt intervention on this topic.”
I am very surprised this is the only article that has been published on this topic so far. I continue to remain stupefied about the things the media reports on en masse like Charley Crockett vs. Twin Temple, and summarily ignores like this story.
Furthermore, I’ve been spending all morning fending off dude bros on X/Twitter basically saying my reporting/headline is bunk, and that Billy Strings should sue me. Strange times we live in.
October 2, 2026 @ 3:22 am
Good for Billy. In general, there can be some creeps at jam shows. The amount of substance use and drinking doesn’t tend to help at the shows/scenes where that’s more prevalent. There’s also this strange hierarchy sometimes with people that go to many shows in a tour. A lot of those regulars are great, but it can get sketchy.
That said, big to mid size rock shows, especially in the 90s and oughts, had frequent and open gropings, etc. Especially with younger girls crowd surfing, which was pathetic. I didn’t see this happen at the smaller punk, hardcore or metal shows.
October 3, 2026 @ 12:35 am
Do you remember what those punk, hardcore, and heavy metal chicks looked like?
October 4, 2026 @ 6:28 pm
Pretty much the same as the big rock show attendees, for the most part. What are you getting at?
October 7, 2026 @ 10:58 am
Not at all. I prefer women to look like women.
October 2, 2026 @ 4:10 am
I’ve never been groped.
October 2, 2026 @ 5:01 am
Beyond Strings’ team banning this guy from their shows (because they can ban anyone for any reason), this sounds like an impossible situation without involving law enforcement so they can gather evidence. Hopefully it’s attacked from all angles, and this creep pays the price for his behavior.
Why can’t women go to shows without worrying about strangers putting their hands on them? It is so sad that we cannot move past this kind of behavior as a society.
October 2, 2026 @ 5:42 am
The women themselves would have to report to law enforcement, and even then it would be a difficult case to prove. Unless someone got these assaults and harassment on camera, it going to be he said/she said and it’s doubtful charges will ever be filed. Banning Smiley from shows should ensure this stops. Take away his power and his access and you take away his opportunity.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:20 am
“because they can ban anyone for any reason”
This is factually incorrect. The Civil Rights Act ensures that government protocol officers can review any ban at any time. Fortunately for Billy Strings fans, “creepy old white guy” is de facto not a protected class under the Civil Rights Act.
October 2, 2026 @ 7:27 am
Oh My. This is only supposed to happen at Bro Country concerts.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:29 am
I know you’re being facetious, but there is a greater issue in play with bro country vs other forms of country. If we can give bro country anything, at least it’s honest. At least the intent is clear. Bro country songs, by their overt nature, actually set up the potential for clear consent or clear rejection. That is, if we’re looking at the songs’ narratives as hypothetical scenarios.
Boyfriend country, on the other hand–which for some reason many people think is better than bro country–is literally sexual coercion set to music, with fake melodramatic worship lyrics, and all the classic lines boys and men have used over many, many years to woo women, only to pull the rug out from under them and disappear.
Bro country was gross, but honest. Boyfriend country is malevolent.
And that’s just two genres. Think about the genre Strings plays in. Super niche. Very high-level artistic. How many creepy professors have taken female students to Billy Strings concerts?
Billy Strings and his band and all other artists have exactly ZERO FAULT in actions of their fans. Let me be clear.
But we need to acknowledge that creeps go to places where it’s easy to coerce vulnerable/gullible young women. A high-level artistic experience? You are all but guaranteed there are some creeps in the audience, possibly with victims they brought with them.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:50 am
Grope a lady at Bro Country event get your ass beaten by onlookers if not by the lady herself.
Grope a woman at liberal Americana event and maybe get invited to a counseling tent.by someone wearing face paint.
October 2, 2026 @ 10:32 am
You sir are the reason the SCM community can’t ever have a decent comment section.
October 2, 2026 @ 11:38 am
Well, I never.
October 2, 2026 @ 2:42 pm
Perhaps taking a clue from the Pedo President.
October 2, 2026 @ 3:38 pm
How can I make this about Trump?
October 3, 2026 @ 11:05 pm
Says the clown who said X was run by leftist loons?
October 4, 2026 @ 10:34 am
YOU literally made this political.
October 2, 2026 @ 11:00 am
In another lifetime, I was involved in municipal government. One of the sayings that stuck with me was a multi-family housing developer addressing crime concerns around multi-family buildings by pointing out that any time you have a bunch of humans living in close proximity, the opportunity for crime to occur was there. You try and screen as much as you can. You take steps (tenant access only doors, camera, etc.) but you stack 100-200 unique human beings on top of each other and some shit is eventually going to go down.
That is to say, Bluegrass, Metal, Rap, Bro Country, at the end of the day I don’t think it matters when it comes to groping and assault. You shove 1000’s of humans into a room/arena for 2-3 hours and in that group some shit is eventually go down. Metal heads get a bad rap due to the lingering impacts of the “satanic panic”, but I have met just as many good dudes who listen to Slayer or Slipknot or Mastodon as folks who listen to Phish or the Dead or Billy Strings.
October 2, 2026 @ 8:43 am
How exactly do you “drugged multiple times” in the pit? What a ridiculous prospect, but here’s how . . . people in the jam band scene purposely share water bottles they know are dosed with drugs, they hope its psychedelics but most likely its also other terrible stuff in unknown quantities, and that’s exactly the problem.
Like any public environment one finds themself in, you’re gonna have predatory people lurking, and if you’re gonna take a risk (multiple times, at that) and drink or take drugs from strangers, it’ll eventually end badly. Use a little common sense, people, and if you suspect a crime’s been committed go to the authorities first, not social media. This is why, despite respecting Billy Strings as a musician and performer, I don’t go to his shows anymore – a huge part of his fanbase are just absolute hippie-dippy dumb dumbs.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:08 am
Liquid LSD in a spray bottle.
October 2, 2026 @ 3:11 pm
Same here. Three years ago in February (Was it THAT long ago? Yep, before the flood.), I went to see Billy in Asheville, and i was offered a bag of mushrooms by a total stranger .My spidey sense went haywire, so I said “No thanks, man.” This sort of thing goes on everywhere he plays, I guess. He’s coming back for a FIVE day stint in February 2027, and- you guessed it- already sold out.
Oh, by the way, if you’re reading, Billy, happy 34th birthday tomorrow.
October 3, 2026 @ 12:41 am
I still remember my daddy’s last words: “Why am I the only one eating mushrooms here?”
October 2, 2026 @ 11:10 am
I’m a magnet for gropers, mostly bachelorettes and MILFs. My wife actually laughs about it because it happens so often.
October 2, 2026 @ 12:26 pm
Haha the legend RD back at it get em bud!
October 2, 2026 @ 2:42 pm
I’m not gonna single Strings out cause he seems like a good dude, but this kind of BS is RAMPANT in the “festie jam band scene”. Pervasive.
If I had a dollar for every time I’ve seen a douchie hippie douchbagging on a drunk chick I’d be retired.
I’ve seen a lot of shit in my day playing in bands but by far the shit that goes on in these circles is abhorrable, the lowest of the low, downright scumbag behavior.
Sure, slander me all you want but a large portion of the people that get shitfaced and make fools of themselves at these shows are just the lowest class people you can find.
I’ve known meth heads with more couth than some of these people.
Best thing that could happen is for these people to police themselves but I’m dubiously hopeful at best.
And why did it take this long for this dipshit to be outted?
Hmmmmmm
October 2, 2026 @ 4:16 pm
“And why did it take this long for this dipshit to be outted?”
It’s hard for me to express the level of vitriol I have seen for my reporting on this on X/Twitter from folks who quite literally are in tie-die, self-identify as left-leaning hippie/music types, screaming at me “FUCK YOU!” for even having the audacity to report on this matter. In many respects, this full-throated, insane reaction is now the story.
When you read the accounts of the women who came forward, they very specifically say the men involved were permissive to this behavior. I am seeing that very permissiveness on X/Twitter specifically by the way they’re attacking the messengers, downplaying the behavior, attempting to isolate to only one person, and acting like it’s a recent phenomenon. There are Reddit threads from two years back outing this guy and his behavior.
I personally take responsibility for not being on this story sooner, which inadvertently allowed allegedly perverted behavior to persist. I feel like my self and the rest of the media are responsible. Yet somehow, we’re being dragged now for overreacting.
October 2, 2026 @ 4:52 pm
Not surprised by the reaction you are seeing.
X/Twitter is a shit-filled cesspool on a GOOD day. It is the place where the people with the loudest, most hate-filled opinions rise up the algorithm in large thanks to the guy who owns it wanting it that way. The only people still hanging on that site are folks with a deep strain on masochism coursing through them.
Now toss in an artist with a large, rabid fanbase having a negative story attached to him and…well, you have what you are seeing.
October 2, 2026 @ 5:50 pm
They obviously fear a Burger Records repeat.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:22 pm
“It is the place where the people with the loudest, most hate-filled opinions rise up the algorithm in large thanks to the guy who owns it wanting it that way.”
Yeah, X/Twitter it’s almost as bad as it was when the leftist loons were in control of it. 🙄
October 3, 2026 @ 6:39 am
Twitter has always been shit. You can keep licking the boot of Elon all you want – drive around in your Cybertruck and micro dose on Ketamine while cheating at video games all day for all I care while ignoring your 15 (and counting) kids. It’s a (semi) free country still.
But lets not get it twisted. X/Twitter has always been shit, but the guy running it now has cranked up the algorithm ten fold to reward the most argumentative, emotionally spurring posts rise to the top. Social media has always had that as a base for any algorithmic feed, but X/Twitter juices it to a level that would make Barry Bonds blush.
October 3, 2026 @ 8:21 am
Mike W. loved Twitter/X when certain opinions were banned and censored.
Now it is a cesspool because he has to see opposing thoughts.
October 3, 2026 @ 8:26 am
Mike W. is right. No matter who is in charge, X/Twitter has been a cesspool except in the early years.
October 3, 2026 @ 12:38 pm
Bing back Jack Dorsey, or get Rick Rubin to run theTwitter.
October 4, 2026 @ 10:38 am
Jimmy, please go occupy Mars with your ketamine fueled hero. We leftist are tired of fighting for your rights.
October 3, 2026 @ 7:09 am
I apologize for my ignorance here, but what is the reason that you are receiving this negative feedback? I don’t see one drop of controversy in your article. This seems pretty darn cut and dry and you aren’t in any way off any deep end.
October 3, 2026 @ 8:37 am
So the excuse people have been using to complain about my coverage is the title of the article. They say it’s misleading because it implies that Billy Strings is the one doing the groping. Of course, it doesn’t. But that doesn’t seem to matter. In truth, they’re Stans who any time anything negative is said about one of their favorite artists, they attack, and adopt a hive mind mentality and attack.
And we’re not just talking about people disagreeing with me. There’s “hippies” in tie-dye literally yelling “FUCK YOU!” at me, and saying that I’m “suggesting the issues were swept under the rug without ANY evidence at all.” when there is a viral Reddit thread (linked in the article) from over 2 years ago with a 19-year-old saying she was harassed, along with numerous other accounts, and a petition started in 2024 to remove the guy in question as the “mayor of the Billy Strings scene.”
Here’s the tweet:
https://x.com/TheKro16/status/2106070314383765581
These people are quite literally out of their minds, and ironically, they’re proving the very thing that the accusers are saying, which is the men in the audience are all making excuses for each other and downplaying the incidents.
These are supposed to be tolerant, loving, Billy Strings jam band fans, and they are on a full court press to undermine even what Billy Strings said, which was to make a safe space for everyone.
October 3, 2026 @ 7:23 am
For someone to say that he usually tries to keep his head down and focus on his music is completely understandable, unfortunately… TO DO NOTHING IS TO BE PART OF THE PROBLEM with much in life in this day and age, it’s part of being a mature adult. It’s what our parents should have taught us before Kindergarten and for those less fortunate, they hopefully learned it in Kindergarten.
Whether a perceived leader or not, we are all obligated to maintain respectful behavior and not take advantage of situations and people when the opportunity presents itself.
And yes, sometimes there will be situations where someone makes the conscious decision to imbibe in excessive alcohol and/or drugs, often encouraged by those with less than respectful motives, this is not an open invitation for others to take advantage of a situation – or… let me restate that… This “should” not be an open invitation for others to take advantage of a situation.
So regardless of how much someone (who is obviously a leader of a group) tries to avoid or doesn’t want to take on a leadership role, they just need to grow the fuck up and assume the position. Because regardless of what anyone says, good music and the artist who creates it breaks the “barriers” and pushes the limits with their skills and abilities. And they impact much more than just the temporary periods of concerts and concert goers, it impacts much more and many more people throughout their lives.
I think Billy Strings vaguely hits this point with his response.
October 3, 2026 @ 9:11 am
Well, hippies ARE all about free love.
October 3, 2026 @ 11:15 am
Where’s all the big corn fed country boy rednecks at these shows to put this old man in his place? This guy seems like a bully, but nothing that some concert mob justice can’t fix.
October 3, 2026 @ 12:56 pm
Dead shows, Phish, jam band scene has always had an underage sex grooming cult behind it. It connects to the hippie communes and cults of the 1960s, Standford Research Institute, and ultimately to Western Intelligence services.
” Mayor” Smiley is US military intelligence (ret.), by the way.
October 3, 2026 @ 4:04 pm
To the angry BS fans mad at Kyle. No, there is zero click bait in the article header that would in any way implicate Strings. When I read the header I took away that there are gropers “in the crowd”. Billy Strings is the star on the stage, he clearly wouldn’t be in the crowd at all his shows. Basic reading comprehension tells you that.
Secondly, this has been a complaint for some time that hasn’t been addressed. The individual in question should be handled accordingly. No one should be treated the way these gals are. If it was my wife that offender would be on the receiving end of my wrath and I promise it wouldn’t go well for him. Ive dealt with miscreants in concert crowds before and have in two situations seen them escorted out and in one case I physically assisted security in grappling and ultimately subduing a violent offender. Im not unique, there are many like me who will do what must be done in these uncomfortable situations. Again this behavior should not be tolerated.
Third: Kyle is a huge fan of Strings and has zero interest in ruining his reputation. This website has championed Billy Strings for YEARS.
Trigs been writing the praises of him long before he blew up to star level.
My advice to those of you on the attack is to take a breath, calm down and realize that all of us want live music to be an enjoyable escape for all people and to be able to enjoy it in relative safety. Surely you can agree with us on that.
Good article.

Much respect to you Kyle for reporting about this. Reading about the vitriol you dealt with from “fans” is disheartening. I appreciate your focus on this. It’s unfortunately not a surprise in our bizarro world. Many men give men a bad name.

Unlimited sale of alcohol, open use of drugs, and to help all of this reach its natural conclusion, probably zero presence of uniformed officers amid the crowd – no no, as that might be “chilling and insensitive”.
Thus who could have possibly guessed that when you get down in this kind of dog park you’re gonna get up with fleas.
I am just as shocked as everyone else.

Where does all the bullshit in this thread come from?

Modern society has its weird idea that debauchery doesn’t lead to tragic outcomes.

This right here. You said it well CountryKnight. It sucks but it will always be something we have to deal with; it will never go away. That does not make it OK. But it can only be controlled to a certain point. That’s like expecting rape and murder to cease to exist. It will always be a thing. And getting effed up out of one’s mind is always going to come with risks.

X/Twitter is a cesspool and has been for some time, and the people making light of this there are disgusting. That said, on X, it simply says: “Billy Strings has addressed allegations of groping and SA *at his concerts*” not “in crowds at his concerts) so if you are the typical lazy X scroller with the attention span of a gnat, and you just simply read that much and not the actual article, or even the article headline here, where it does say “in crowds,” I can see how some would think it points to Billy. I don’t think you did that for clickbait, as many are accusing you of, I’m just saying I can see where some are drawing that conclusion. *runs and hides*
P.S. The people actually downplaying the validity/serioussness of all this are disgusting.

The first people who brought this to my attention on X/Twitter, I responded to them that I appreciated the feedback, and that the title had been clarified to clear up any misconception. That’s where all of this should have ended. The problem is the way that X algorithm rewards conflict and anger, this was just the beginning. Ultimately, I have multiple Billy Strings Stans basically becoming rape apologists, and saying this was all an one-off incident tied to one man and one woman instead of multiple women coming forward, multiple men being named by name, and reports of incidents on Reddit going back over two years, which of course, verified they weren’t even reading my reporting, they were simply just reacting to a headline.

I am a fan of Billy’s music. I saw him in a theater here in New Orleans a few years back and thoroughly enjoyed the show but was slightly put off by the crowd. Mind you I go see a lot of shows, over 1000 concerts and just as many club shows from jazz to reggae to country/Americana to rock acts like The Cure & NIN, usually down in the pit but for this one I was upstairs in a seat. A few years later I went again to see him on one of his New Years Run shows here at UNO Arena, in the pit. I have never been around so many obnoxious, entitled jerks in my entire life. I actually left early as I just couldn’t stand it. Never again. I do not find any of this surprising one bit. It obviously has nothing to do with Billy as he seems as nice as they come.

I did a deeeeep dive on both the Reddit post from two years ago and the viral IG post. I caveat this with the fact that I worked child welfare for 25 years and have specialized in domestic violence, dynamics of power and control, victimization, substance use, child and adult victim interviews, and trauma. Someone in the comments asked why management should continue to care about this. Here’s why. There are allegations that Billys team were made aware of these concerns about this person two years ago. They supposedly gave him a “talking to” and a warning to not do it anymore. This does NOT curb this type of predatory behavior. There are allegations a 13 year old was victimized. There are NUMEROUS women indicating harm by this person in both posts. There are NUMEROUS women who indicated they also have allegations, but sont wish to tell them bc they are afraid and he remains in the scene. That’s just the SA stuff. Then we have TONS of reports of him acting aggressively towards adults and children, policing the merch line and the rail. He has a crew that is harassing victims when they try to speak up and they assist him in policing who gets on or near the rail. We have him allegedly using his power and influence promising young female newcomers to the scene a spot on the rail. Here is where it gets even more wildly concerning for me. There are claims that Billy acknowledges this person by name from the stage like they are friends. This person bragged that he was able to message Billys wife to get tickets “gifted” to him when he couldn’t get into a specific lottery show. We have the photographer Jesse taking crowd photos of him that promote his status. We have allegations that he was hanging out at Billy’s moms house. And he seems to believe that Billy’s head of security is his bestie (allegations that he successfully calls security over to police people who attempt to get in “his” space on the rail). And then lastly, while I completely understand Billy being RIGHTFULLY pissed off after being hit with a lighter (his anger was absolutely justifiable), he looked down into that crowd where these guys run the area and told them to string up that person and sodomize them (sexually offend them wo their consent). AND YOU WANT VICTIMS TO REPORT? WHAT TF IS GOING ON HERE?? I believe in Billy. We all do. I am really hoping this is handled now and that they learn mechanisms to control for it in the future. There needs to be a MAJOR reconfiguration up front that no longer allows a crew of the same people to manage the comings and goings of others up there. It is a setup for victimization.

Billy is in over his head.
Special Forces needs to do an extraction.

I have been to about 4 BS concerts. The first one was great, small outdoor venue. The last 3 forget it. I agree that the Billy Goats or should I say bat shit crazies, are very territorial and a bit scary. Seeing them run to the merch line is like the opening of doors on Black Friday at Wal-Mart. Fascinating and just weird. I also met a couple of times the arrogant Daphne ie DaisyRedDaisy on Instagram. I pretty much get along with everyone I meet, but this woman is just someone I disliked from the get go. She is a huge defender of Smiley and part of the problem.

I’m not making excuses for anyone and I don’t think this behavior should be tolerated at all. But I will say that the people that “rail-ride” and squeeze up to the front are on average way worse people to be around than the people that stand back a bit. If I get GA floor tickets I just stand/dance next to the soundboard. I’m probably not ever one to get sexually harassed but I do enjoy a bit of people watching and never seen anything from that far back that looked inappropriate.
