Billy Strings Addresses Alleged Groping Incidents in Crowds at His Concerts

Billy Strings has addressed incidents of alleged groping and sexual assault at this concerts after numerous social media posts from fans addressing the behavior went viral, and specifically about a Billy Strings superfan named James Smiley.
The most high-profile accusation came from a fan with the Instagram name jenny_jah who posted on Wednesday, September 30th,
I was sexually assaulted by James Smiley, the self-assumed ‘mayor’ of the Billy Strings community. He is a pervert, pedophile, and predator. Stop making these people feel comfortable in our communities.
I have been drugged multiple times in the Billy Strings pit. Each time James Smiley was present and would not stop turning around to watch me throughout the show, as if in wait. Women/Girls, Beware! Reference Reddit for countless other victims who have spoken-up about this man but have since been brushed under the rug. Reference the seductive messages sent to 13 year old girls after ‘showing them the ropes’ at a show. Reference the people who have been bullied out of being up front at a concert.
To identify: Smiley is the grey bearded convicted felon who will be walking around venues shirtless, wearing an open robe as if the world is his bedroom. His voice is as harsh as the toes that will be on display. He described his spirit animal to me as the Honry Toad, which about sums it up.
His henchman Jordan Johnson has also been trying to silence the recent accounts of abuse from his X girlfriend and teenage daughter. His daughter is safe and out of the house. His X has refused to take down statements, despite Jordan and “prominent’ community member coercion. Like-minded people stand together.
What is for certain is that James Smiley is the “self-proclaimed mayor of the Billy Strings scene.” He had a podcast (now deleted) that proclaimed as much, and anyone who’s attended Billy Strings shows anywhere in the United States likely has seen Smiley on the very front rail of concerts right in front of the stage, and often shirtless and in a bathrobe. Anger and allegations against Smiley have been swirling for years, including at one point a fellow fan starting a petition to “recall” Smiley as the “mayor” of the Billy Strings scene.
A two-year-old Reddit thread also includes numerous allegations from young women saying they were harassed by Smiley.

The bass player for Billy Strings, Royal Massat, spoke up in the comments of the viral Instagram post, saying, “Thank you for bravely speaking up about this. I am disgusted to hear these accounts of abuse and can only imagine how many of his victims have been silenced by his posse and intimidated by his “stature” in the scene. I hope others with similar experiences are emboldened by your example to speak up as well. I am an ally and will do everything in my power to address this and hopefully restore the sacred and safe space that our shows should be.”
Then on Thursday evening (10/1), Billy Strings also addressed the situation, even if somewhat ambiguously. He said in part,
I usually try to keep my head down, and play guitar, keep this about the music. It’s kind of what I’ve always wanted to do. I never set out to be any authority figure. But I realize as this community grows, my following grows, and this community we’ve all built together, whether I like it or not, I am the leader, and I have a responsibility to try to curate this and try to make this a safe space for everybody.
I’m not going to accept any threatening, dangerous, or harmful behavior of any kind, period. My team and I will do everything in our power to make sure that that’s what happens. I can’t see what happens in the crowd. There’s thousands of people out there. I think this is a community and we all need to work together to make sure this is a safe space. I’ll do my part. You do yours. We can all work together to make sure that if you see something at a show, to say something … I just want people to be able to come together and have a good time without feeling threatened or unsafe.
I’ve walked through the crowd myself and had someone grab my ass … I learned in kindergarten to keep my hands to myself. And I can’t believe this needs to be said so much, but consent is a big thing. I think everyone has the right to come to a concert and feel safe … I’m going to do everything I can to make sure this is a safe place for people to come and have a good time, dance, and listen to music.
Many praised Billy Strings for addressing the situation. A few others said that Strings had not gone far enough, and needed to call out the alleged abusers directly, though doing so could put Strings in the position of slander/defamation if he cannot directly corroborate or prove the allegations. Either way, the allegations are disturbing, though it does appear that James Smiley has likely deleted much of his online presence in the wake of the allegations. It remains to be seen if he’s still welcomed at Billy Strings shows.

There were lots of hangers-on like this during the Grateful Dead years. Good riddance. Watch the documentary on Netflix for gritty details.
No one will miss these losers. They’re a stain and keep even more people away from live shows, especially women.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:07 am
Wavy Gravy comes to mind.

As someone who has been groped multiple times at shows over recent years, I am relieved that more scrutiny is being brought to this sort of behavior: especially in light of the “Cornell Seven” headline/unfolding investigation.
Strings responded about as well as you can expect him to until more evidence is gathered against Smiley. Hopefully he’s barred from attending further concerts regardless.
October 2, 2026 @ 3:39 pm
Nothing was illegal/she consented to everything according to her in multiple statements btw
Absolute sham and another L for women’s PR
October 2, 2026 @ 6:43 pm
Are you referring to the Cornell gang rape? No one consents to 7 pathetic losers. They advertised it. “Free pussy” Someone responded “Is the store still open?” How anyone can defend these scum is mind boggling. I hope their families feel shame. You, Bob, disgust me, if you are defending them.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:56 pm
In her own statements and messages she says she willingly participated in the drugs and sex. She said none of the acts were illegal in her own text messages. In her text messages she said she had a great time with them and told one of them she wanted to see him again and smoke with him soon.
Not to mention she changed her story way after the fact. It’s an obvious case of regret. You disgust me for falling for such a slimeball who wants to destroy other’s lives for something she agreed to do.
October 2, 2026 @ 8:50 pm
James Smiley is that you?
October 1, 2026 @ 9:46 pm
What practically can be done? Can they ban this man from his concerts? Can they obtain a restraining order? Either way they’re going to need to be prepared with ample proof and witnesses or else they’ll get in legal trouble.
They could hire a security person to literally follow him around without knowledge, and then the moment he does something illegal, have him removed, and hopefully capture it on tape. But this doesn’t sound as easy as it should be.
October 1, 2026 @ 10:10 pm
I’m sure they can 86 this guy or guys from concerts, just like a bar 86’s a drunk that is constantly starting fights or harassing women. My guess is that’s already been done by management, if only to save face.
October 2, 2026 @ 3:34 am
Right, and the social pressure on this dude in the lots and at the shows will almost certainly be pretty harsh even if he doesn’t get 86’ed, or before he does.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:44 am
careful with that 86 talk, trig. someone will think you’re trying to assassinate the president.
October 2, 2026 @ 7:48 am
Yes he can be banned from concerts. Venues are private establishments. It’s unfortunately pretty common for young female artists to give venue staff names/pictures of people who are not allowed in. Usually stalkers/creeps.
October 1, 2026 @ 10:17 pm
The good parts of concerts are outweighed by the bad these days. With items being thrown around the arena and an apparent groping epidemic, it sounds like you need a hard hat, chastity belt and pepper spray if you hope to survive until the encore.
I do wonder how you can be drugged in the pit. Especially multiple times. Maybe look into watching the show from a different location in the future.
October 2, 2026 @ 7:43 am
Yes, going to a concert comes with a lot of risks these days – those that you mentioned, plus last minute cancellations and weather events. I think the economy is the primary driver of blue dot fever but think these factors are contributing too.
October 1, 2026 @ 11:10 pm
I am not sure he can say more than he has said. Those abused need to take action at the concert and security needs to be alert to any allegations made and take action.
October 1, 2026 @ 11:32 pm
I was very glad when I saw Billy String’s message about this matter. He’s a terrific human being and he said everything he could in the best way possible. I’m pretty sure his crew will take care of the problem.
I also was very glad when I saw this article. Thank you Trigger for your prompt intervention on this topic.
October 2, 2026 @ 10:07 am
“I also was very glad when I saw this article. Thank you Trigger for your prompt intervention on this topic.”
I am very surprised this is the only article that has been published on this topic so far. I continue to remain stupefied about the things the media reports on en masse like Charley Crockett vs. Twin Temple, and summarily ignores like this story.
Furthermore, I’ve been spending all morning fending off dude bros on X/Twitter basically saying my reporting/headline is bunk, and that Billy Strings should sue me. Strange times we live in.
October 2, 2026 @ 3:22 am
Good for Billy. In general, there can be some creeps at jam shows. The amount of substance use and drinking doesn’t tend to help at the shows/scenes where that’s more prevalent. There’s also this strange hierarchy sometimes with people that go to many shows in a tour. A lot of those regulars are great, but it can get sketchy.
That said, big to mid size rock shows, especially in the 90s and oughts, had frequent and open gropings, etc. Especially with younger girls crowd surfing, which was pathetic. I didn’t see this happen at the smaller punk, hardcore or metal shows.
October 2, 2026 @ 4:10 am
I’ve never been groped.
October 2, 2026 @ 5:01 am
Beyond Strings’ team banning this guy from their shows (because they can ban anyone for any reason), this sounds like an impossible situation without involving law enforcement so they can gather evidence. Hopefully it’s attacked from all angles, and this creep pays the price for his behavior.
Why can’t women go to shows without worrying about strangers putting their hands on them? It is so sad that we cannot move past this kind of behavior as a society.
October 2, 2026 @ 5:42 am
The women themselves would have to report to law enforcement, and even then it would be a difficult case to prove. Unless someone got these assaults and harassment on camera, it going to be he said/she said and it’s doubtful charges will ever be filed. Banning Smiley from shows should ensure this stops. Take away his power and his access and you take away his opportunity.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:20 am
“because they can ban anyone for any reason”
This is factually incorrect. The Civil Rights Act ensures that government protocol officers can review any ban at any time. Fortunately for Billy Strings fans, “creepy old white guy” is de facto not a protected class under the Civil Rights Act.
October 2, 2026 @ 7:27 am
Oh My. This is only supposed to happen at Bro Country concerts.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:29 am
I know you’re being facetious, but there is a greater issue in play with bro country vs other forms of country. If we can give bro country anything, at least it’s honest. At least the intent is clear. Bro country songs, by their overt nature, actually set up the potential for clear consent or clear rejection. That is, if we’re looking at the songs’ narratives as hypothetical scenarios.
Boyfriend country, on the other hand–which for some reason many people think is better than bro country–is literally sexual coercion set to music, with fake melodramatic worship lyrics, and all the classic lines boys and men have used over many, many years to woo women, only to pull the rug out from under them and disappear.
Bro country was gross, but honest. Boyfriend country is malevolent.
And that’s just two genres. Think about the genre Strings plays in. Super niche. Very high-level artistic. How many creepy professors have taken female students to Billy Strings concerts?
Billy Strings and his band and all other artists have exactly ZERO FAULT in actions of their fans. Let me be clear.
But we need to acknowledge that creeps go to places where it’s easy to coerce vulnerable/gullible young women. A high-level artistic experience? You are all but guaranteed there are some creeps in the audience, possibly with victims they brought with them.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:50 am
Grope a lady at Bro Country event get your ass beaten by onlookers if not by the lady herself.
Grope a woman at liberal Americana event and maybe get invited to a counseling tent.by someone wearing face paint.
October 2, 2026 @ 10:32 am
You sir are the reason the SCM community can’t ever have a decent comment section.
October 2, 2026 @ 11:38 am
Well, I never.
October 2, 2026 @ 2:42 pm
Perhaps taking a clue from the Pedo President.
October 2, 2026 @ 3:38 pm
How can I make this about Trump?
October 2, 2026 @ 11:00 am
In another lifetime, I was involved in municipal government. One of the sayings that stuck with me was a multi-family housing developer addressing crime concerns around multi-family buildings by pointing out that any time you have a bunch of humans living in close proximity, the opportunity for crime to occur was there. You try and screen as much as you can. You take steps (tenant access only doors, camera, etc.) but you stack 100-200 unique human beings on top of each other and some shit is eventually going to go down.
That is to say, Bluegrass, Metal, Rap, Bro Country, at the end of the day I don’t think it matters when it comes to groping and assault. You shove 1000’s of humans into a room/arena for 2-3 hours and in that group some shit is eventually go down. Metal heads get a bad rap due to the lingering impacts of the “satanic panic”, but I have met just as many good dudes who listen to Slayer or Slipknot or Mastodon as folks who listen to Phish or the Dead or Billy Strings.
October 2, 2026 @ 8:43 am
How exactly do you “drugged multiple times” in the pit? What a ridiculous prospect, but here’s how . . . people in the jam band scene purposely share water bottles they know are dosed with drugs, they hope its psychedelics but most likely its also other terrible stuff in unknown quantities, and that’s exactly the problem.
Like any public environment one finds themself in, you’re gonna have predatory people lurking, and if you’re gonna take a risk (multiple times, at that) and drink or take drugs from strangers, it’ll eventually end badly. Use a little common sense, people, and if you suspect a crime’s been committed go to the authorities first, not social media. This is why, despite respecting Billy Strings as a musician and performer, I don’t go to his shows anymore – a huge part of his fanbase are just absolute hippie-dippy dumb dumbs.

Liquid LSD in a spray bottle.
October 2, 2026 @ 3:11 pm
Same here. Three years ago in February (Was it THAT long ago? Yep, before the flood.), I went to see Billy in Asheville, and i was offered a bag of mushrooms by a total stranger .My spidey sense went haywire, so I said “No thanks, man.” This sort of thing goes on everywhere he plays, I guess. He’s coming back for a FIVE day stint in February 2027, and- you guessed it- already sold out.
Oh, by the way, if you’re reading, Billy, happy 34th birthday tomorrow.
October 2, 2026 @ 11:10 am
I’m a magnet for gropers, mostly bachelorettes and MILFs. My wife actually laughs about it because it happens so often.
October 2, 2026 @ 12:26 pm
Haha the legend RD back at it get em bud!
October 2, 2026 @ 2:42 pm
I’m not gonna single Strings out cause he seems like a good dude, but this kind of BS is RAMPANT in the “festie jam band scene”. Pervasive.
If I had a dollar for every time I’ve seen a douchie hippie douchbagging on a drunk chick I’d be retired.
I’ve seen a lot of shit in my day playing in bands but by far the shit that goes on in these circles is abhorrable, the lowest of the low, downright scumbag behavior.
Sure, slander me all you want but a large portion of the people that get shitfaced and make fools of themselves at these shows are just the lowest class people you can find.
I’ve known meth heads with more couth than some of these people.
Best thing that could happen is for these people to police themselves but I’m dubiously hopeful at best.
And why did it take this long for this dipshit to be outted?
Hmmmmmm
October 2, 2026 @ 4:16 pm
“And why did it take this long for this dipshit to be outted?”
It’s hard for me to express the level of vitriol I have seen for my reporting on this on X/Twitter from folks who quite literally are in tie-die, self-identify as left-leaning hippie/music types, screaming at me “FUCK YOU!” for even having the audacity to report on this matter. In many respects, this full-throated, insane reaction is now the story.
When you read the accounts of the women who came forward, they very specifically say the men involved were permissive to this behavior. I am seeing that very permissiveness on X/Twitter specifically by the way they’re attacking the messengers, downplaying the behavior, attempting to isolate to only one person, and acting like it’s a recent phenomenon. There are Reddit threads from two years back outing this guy and his behavior.
I personally take responsibility for not being on this story sooner, which inadvertently allowed allegedly perverted behavior to persist. I feel like my self and the rest of the media are responsible. Yet somehow, we’re being dragged now for overreacting.
October 2, 2026 @ 4:52 pm
Not surprised by the reaction you are seeing.
X/Twitter is a shit-filled cesspool on a GOOD day. It is the place where the people with the loudest, most hate-filled opinions rise up the algorithm in large thanks to the guy who owns it wanting it that way. The only people still hanging on that site are folks with a deep strain on masochism coursing through them.
Now toss in an artist with a large, rabid fanbase having a negative story attached to him and…well, you have what you are seeing.
October 2, 2026 @ 5:50 pm
They obviously fear a Burger Records repeat.
October 2, 2026 @ 9:22 pm
“It is the place where the people with the loudest, most hate-filled opinions rise up the algorithm in large thanks to the guy who owns it wanting it that way.”
Yeah, X/Twitter it’s almost as bad as it was when the leftist loons were in control of it. 🙄
