Billy Strings Adds New Tour Dates, Jams w/ Bob Weir, Les Claypool

We are living in the era of Billy Strings in bluegrass music, and it won’t be long before that is so self-evident it’s trite to say, and his popularity and influence spills over into the popular culture realm at large. Gone already are the days of seeing him in clubs or on side stages of festivals where you can stand six feet from the man himself, unless you get a lucky break like some fans did recently. And here shortly, Billy may beat all others in independent roots music to headlining arenas coast to coast.

In the meantime, you still have the opportunity to see Billy Strings in relatively intimate theaters if you’re lucky, and you should exploit that opportunity when it presents itself. Billy just added a bunch of new tour dates both in the east and out west for this summer, and even with multiple dates at some locations, these tickets WILL sell out. See all dates below.

Along with seeing Billy Strings accompanied by his amazing band of banjoist Billy Failing, bassist Royal Masat, and Jarrod Walker on mandolin, folks have seen him collaborate with many living legends of bluegrass like Del McCory and Bela Fleck, along with contemporaries such as Molly Tuttle, and even mainstream artists such as Luke Combs.

But recently Billy Strings checked off even more boxes on the bucket list, sitting in with Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, joined by Les Claypool of Primus. Just like Jerry Garcia, Billy Strings has become a bridge between the bluegrass and jam band worlds, while still very much adhering to his bluegrass roots.

On February 28th, Billy Strings sat in with Bob Weir’s Wolf Bros. band including Don Was on bass at the Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California, playing a pretty epic version of the “China Cat Sunflower” into “I Know You Rider” song cycle first captured on the Grateful Dead’s iconic live album Europe ’72 (see below). Also, Les Claypool of Primus showed up to spell Don Was for a song or two.

“I just wanna circle back and reiterate how fucking special and important this is to me and how grateful and lucky I feel to live this life,” Strings said later. “I played on stage last night with two of my biggest heroes. It feels unreal and sometimes I really do have to convince myself that I belong and pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming. I don’t know what else to say. I’m just happy as hell and grateful for all of the abundance of amazing people in my life. I don’t take this shit for granted.”
