Billy Strings, Michael Cleveland Lead 2020 IBMA Bluegrass Noms

Like so many things in the music world in 2020, the International Bluegrass Music Association’s annual World of Bluegrass gathering in Raleigh, North Carolina will not be happening in person, and will be pivoting to an online virtual event to service the bluegrass community as best it can in the current environment.
“While we all would love to gather in Raleigh this year for IBMA World of Bluegrass, the extraordinary circumstances made this decision necessary,” says Paul Schiminger, Executive Director of IBMA. “Maintaining the health and safety of the large crowd we enjoy each year would be such an enormous, uncertain, and risky proposition. However, we know how important this week is to our bluegrass professionals and fans, so we are moving forward in new ways.”
However the 2020 IBMA Awards will go forward as scheduled, sans audience of course, but with an exceptional list of nominees for 2020. Leading all nominees is fiddle player Michael Cleveland with seven nominations total, and entirely worthy after releasing the weal-received album Tall Fiddler. He’s followed by the wondrous Billy Strings who had a breakout year in 2019, and receives four nominations.
The 31st annual IBMA Bluegrass Music Awards will be streamed online, and will take place during the September 28th to October 3rd virtual World of Bluegrass event, with a date and time to be announced in the future.

I’m sorry not to see AJ Lee & Blue Summit on this list, they are fantastic and had a great recent album.

I know it’s not news to anyone, but Billy Strings is beyond belief good. We’re witnessing musical genius.

All these musicians are incredible. I learned a lot just by watching them perform. And you’re not gonna find any shitty sampler or snap track on their records, only pure passion and talent.

Bluegrass has always be the refuge where I flee when the product Nashville pushes gets too weird for me. If the powers that be somehow manage to ruin Bluegrass, I guess I’ll be forced to listen to nothing but oldies. That being said, as things stand now stand, Bluegrass is still pretty healthy, with many great up-and-coming acts out there.

Cleveland is phenomanal! Dude will blow your mind. His backstory is really something too.
Strings is also mind blowing…
Super pickers in a new age.

Just noticed Danny Paisley is nominated for vocalist. That guy is the real deal. No one is more hardcore roots old timey than Paisley. Hes awesome. Also, hes the guy to turn up loud if you are needing to get your in-laws to leave cause they over-stayed their welcome!! Just sayin…

Bluegrass is pure & simple…it’s heart & soul…& it’s not forgetting the roots.
On my playlist are always bluegrass tracks & i’m glad young artists are ready to fill the shoes.
Not only american artists…australian acts too:
– The New Graces – “Seasons” & new single “Misty” (Album: Seasons)
– Kristy Cox feat. Tommy Emmanuel – “Finger Pickin’ Good” (Album: No Headlights)
The New Graces are -so far- the best new act of the year & the album Seasons is my overall AotY / Best Bluegrass, Heritage Country or Bush Ballad AotY / Australian AotY.
– Lizzy Long – “Fireflies & Falling Stars” (Album: Dreaming Again)
– Donna Ulisse – “When I Go All Bluegrass On You” (Album: Time For Love)
– New Act: Bowregard – Arrows – Album (10 Tracks) – Released (06/30) (Single: “Fallen Angles”)

Wild seeing the names of half of Sturgill’s bluegrass ensemble up for individual awards.

Well, it was a bluegrass all-star band. Back in the early ’90s, I saw a double bill of the Nashville Bluegrass Band and the Del McCoury Band, with Stuart Duncan playing in the former and Mike Bub in the latter. And Tim O’Brien, while not nominated for anything, is a bluegrass giant.

Sierra Hull’s latest album 25 Trips is a real cool, well made album. Really deserves a listen. Came out in Feb. She is so talented and is pushing the limits with her song writing, playing, and composing. Mandolin virtuoso, but plays a lot of instruments. Great singer too.

Love seeing Andy Hall get a nomination, that guy is incredible
