Blackberry Smoke Announces New Album, New Members
To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the band and re-establish their Southern roots, Georgia-based Southern rock badasses Blackberry Smoke will be releasing their latest record called You Hear Georgia on May 28th. Produced by fellow Georgia native Dave Cobb, the album is all about their deep appreciation for the Peach State, especially the title track (listen below).
“Lyrically, the song is about the South being misunderstood,” says lead singer and primary songwriter Charlie Starr. “It’s obviously a rough and tumble world, and there’s a lot of bad people. But there’s a lot of good people too. It started with the idea of how people might have a preconceived opinion of you because of a thick Southern accent, then expanded into the reality of how some people just seem to have such a hard time getting along, thanks to political or religious views, or simply what part of the country you come from.”
Collaboration is a component to the new record, with a host of cool names being included in the sessions. Jamey Johnson shows up to sing on the song “Lonesome for a Livin’,” and Warren Haynes appears on “All Rise Again.” Charlie Starr also wrote with Dave Lizimi of The Four Horsemen for the first two songs of the 10-song album, and Rickey Medlocke of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blackfoot for the final song, “Old Scarecrow.”
With new music also comes a couple of new members to the group who you may notice in the promo photos for the band. Joining the band now both in the studio and on the road is well-known Atlanta percussionist Preston Holcomb, as well as guitarist Benji Shanks who has worked with The Black Crowes and others in the past. Benji had previously appeared on acoustic tours with Charlie Starr as an accompanist, and both were on tour with Blackberry Smoke when they paired up with the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Preston Holcomb and Benji Shanks are now considered full-time touring members of the band, and help the band stretch out their extended jams.
Also joining the band for the album are The Black Bettys. With their own careers to keep up with as well, you may not see them out on the road. But Blackberry Smoke does hope to utilize them on select dates in the future. They join the Charlie and the rest of Blackberry Smoke, Richard Turner (bass, vocals), Brit Turner (drums), Paul Jackson (guitar, vocals) and Brandon Still (keyboards).
Blackberry Smoke has been one of the highlights of independent country and Southern rock over the last two decades, becoming the first independent outfit in the modern era to go #1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart when their album Holding All The Roses did so in 2015. This feat was matched in 2016 with Like an Arrow. Their 2018 album Find a Light went #3, and became their 3rd consecutive album to hit #1 in rock as well.
You Hear Georgia is now available for pre-order.

Love this new song. Really hope we can quit listening to all these statist hippies before long so we can see some live music this year. Haven’t seen them yet but have heard they’re excellent.

Oh heck yes they are. When you said “new members” I was afraid someone had quit. “Additional members” wouldn’t’ve given me a start.

Been a huge fan since thier first album (that was oddly produced by Jessie James Dupree of Jackyl). They have come a long way since then. Excellent new song! I’m very fortunate to be able to see them live in a few days in Tampa. First concert in over a year and I’m giddy like a kid before Christmas!

Blackberry Smoke was the last band I saw live, the day before everything shut down here in Quebec. What a show it was. That first song sounds great. Can’t wait to hear the rest.

I saw these dudes live about 8 years ago in Boston and found them kind of boring in concert. Love their studio stuff but wondering if I just caught them on an off night or are they not great live?

I saw them probably 6 or so years ago with Drake White opening, and Drake put on a better show than they did. He just put a lot more energy into the show than they did. Still love Blackberry smoke though, The whippoorwill is probably a top 10 album for me.

That’s too funny. That was the same tour I was talking about. Maybe it was 6 years ago. Drake White just completely stole the show when he opened. I haven’t seen Blackberry Smoke since but like you, have been listening to a lot of their music

I’ve never been blown away by a support artist more than Drake White.
He supported Kip Moore in the UK and again he completely stole the show.
Saw Blackberry Smoke in the UK though and still thought they kicked ass.

I’ve seen them 2 or 3 times in concert and they may be my all time favorite live band. I’ll never pass up a chance to see these guys within a few hours drive.

I was super late to the party on this band, but they stick in my YouTube algo like a bad habit.
Looking forward to this one, but curious to see how the addition of so many artists goes in the studio. Cobb isn’t really known for a lot of dubbing, so I’m interested in how they’ll approach it.

I love these guys. I suspect they’re playing to a click, and it’s holding them back.
Get off the grid, boys.
Trig, you play with sticks. What’s your take on putting everything fricking thing on the rack? Am I alone in wanting to hear people get rowdy in the studio and cut that sh*t live like God intended?

i like BlackBerry smoke. But is it just me or when ever I listen to alot of artists today, the music seems to drown out their voices. like the music, but would actually like to hear the singer through the WHOLE SONG and not just part of it.

one problem with the songwriting, and, the band in general, tunes are indistinguishable, and its really charley starr with backing band.
If the other guys have some tunes, they should play them. and maybe let the other guy play a solo once in a while.

We saw them in January, 2019, on the Southern Rock Cruise. They were the best band on the ship, and there were many. Had never heard them before, really impressive.
