Blackberry Smoke Drummer Brit Turner Dies of Brain Cancer

In Southern rock, you don’t have “bands” in the normal sense. You have bands of brothers and sisters. They’re more like families than bands. This was one of the reasons the Georgia-based Southern rock band The Allman Brothers named their iconic 1973 album Brothers and Sisters after the passing of band members Duane Allman and Berry Oakley.
This “Brothers and Sisters” designation is especially true for Blackberry Smoke, who also hail from Georgia. And that is why the last couple of years have been especially painful for the band. The heartbeat of the band, Brit Turner, has been suffering from major health issues, from a heart attack in 2022, to a diagnosis of an aggressive glioblastoma brain tumor in November of 2022 and subsequent brain surgery.
On Sunday evening, March 3rd, Blackberry Smoke announced that Brit Turner has died at the age of 57.
Blackberry Smoke said in a statement,
It is with the deepest sorrow that we inform everyone that our brother Brit Turner has moved on from this life. If you had the privilege of knowing Brit on any level, you know he was the most caring, empathetic, driven and endearing person one could ever hope to meet. Brit was Blackberry Smoke’s True North, the compass that instituted the ideology that will continue to guide this band. Brit has battled glioblastoma since his diagnosis in the fall of 2022 and fought every day. We ask for prayers for his family and band brothers. More information on arrangements will be forthcoming. Thank you to everyone who has supported and been there for Brit and his family through this fight.
Along with being a founding member of the band since its inception in 2000, Brit Turner was the actual brother of Blackberry Smoke bass player Richard Turner, and was also considered the big brother to everyone in the band. He was also the band’s de facto historian, chronicling the band all along the way. Brit kept collections of all the accolades, accomplishments, tour posters, credentials, and everything else from the band’s lineage.
Brit Turner was born in Mt. Clemons., Michigan, but was raised in Smyrna, Georgia, just north of Atlanta. He came from a musical family, with his father playing in a big band before he joined the air force, his grandmother playing piano, and his uncle playing guitar. In the 6th grade, Brit received his first drum set, and he was off to the races.
Turner’s first influences were rock and metal bands such as AC/DC, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. Along with his brother Richard, they formed basement bands throughout high school, and got good enough to become the local opener for bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica when they were coming up and toured through Atlanta. Turner also worked at Atlanta Pro Percussion, where he made further connections throughout the business, and perfected his craft.
But after getting heavy metal “out of his system” as he liked to say, he pointed his nose more toward rock, Southern rock, and country. In 2000 when Brit and brother Richard joined up with guitarist and singer Charlie Star, and guitarist Paul Jackson, Blackberry Smoke was formed, and would go on to become one of the most important Southern rock bands of the modern era.
The band slugged it out for about a dozen years before Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band felt like they were worth taking a chance on, and signed them to his Southern Ground record label. Blackberry Smoke released The Whippoorwhill through the label in 2012, which debuted at #8 on the Billboard Country Albums chart, and introduced them to the world.
But it was the 2015 album Holding All The Roses that would go on to become the first independently-released country album to hit #1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart in the modern era. Having moved on from Southern Ground and signed to Rounder, Brit Turner and Blackberry Smoke seeded the independent country revolution by shattering the glass ceiling, and opening up the possibilities for all the other independent artists and bands that would come along in the coming years.
The Smoke would hit #1 again with their next album, 2016’s Like an Arrow. With Brit Turner still playing drums, Blackberry Smoke just released their latest album on February 16th, the Dave Cobb-produced Be Right Here.
Though mostly a Southern rock band, Blackberry Smoke regularly dabbles in country, including recording the song “Lonesome for a Livin'” with Jamey Johnson that was original meant for George Jones. They also acted as the backing band on Adam Hood’s 2022 album Bad Days Better.
Despite Brit Turner’s dire diagnosis, he continued to play with the band live, even while receiving therapy. Though during recent live appearances in 2024, Turner was not present. Drummers Kent Aberle and Preston Holcome have filled in for Brit, or played with him on tour recently. Saving Country Music was currently working on a feature and update on Brit Turner’s condition when the news came down he passed.
The death of Brit Turner leaves a crater of a hole in Blackberry Smoke, Southern rock, and the greater country and roots world.

Jesus. You are on quite a run of obits. Each individual a tremendous talent and influence on their peers and will be missed.
March 3, 2024 @ 8:43 pm
Absolutely devastating. The entire band handled his situation with the utmost respect to him, as a true brotherhood would do. May he rest peacefully

My heart was ripped out when I saw the news last night. Drummers always take it a little harder when other drummers pass. I was lucky enough to see him live 2 or 3 times. Still very sad this morning. RIP

This is such damn hard news to hear.
Brits drum sound and simplicity was so unique and robust. Its like he knew exactly what needed to go in every measure of every song. A genuis by far and a great dude to follow. RIP brother Britt. They are adding a golden feather to your hat today.

March 4, 2024 @ 7:22 am
Like everyone at some point another, I’ve got a few things in life I’m dealing with. Seeing Brit play on through a season much more difficult than anything I’m facing was inspiring. Thanks for the music, Mr Turner. Godspeed.

“We ask for prayers for his family and band brothers.”
You are in prayer ✨
Have asked for God’s Holy Spirit to descend upon you – for God’s peace, around you
March 4, 2024 @ 7:54 am
Damn. That’s devastating.
March 4, 2024 @ 8:07 am
Saw the band live in 2022 not too long after Brit’s diagnosis. He was still on drums and, at one point during the set, the whole band did a toast to Brit with huge cheers from the crowd. It was a bittersweet moment, but it’s heartening to think that he had so much support from the band and the fans while he was still alive doing what he loved.

Terrible news. It was encouraging that Brit was able to play so many shows during treatment; I was really thinking he would beat this cancer.
March 4, 2024 @ 9:00 am
I don’t think any of us can appreciate how devastating Brit’s diagnosis really was, and how miraculous it was that he played through it as long as he did. I think that’s one of the reasons it is so hard to take this news, because he really made it appear like he could pull through a cancer whose prognosis is not “if” but “when.” Most people live only about 8 months total. He was still playing drums longer than that.
March 4, 2024 @ 9:16 am
Unfortunately this particular type of cancer has a less than 7% survival rate past five years, with the average survival rate being less than eight months. Sadly, this was always going to be extremely tough. That probably factored into the decision to just keep playing shows and, hopefully, living life as fully and normally as possible for as long as possible considering the difficult odds.

Glioblastomas are vicious.
Dear friend and nuclear medicine mentor in Miami, Guy Casaubon, died of a glioblastoma.
We were gutted & devastated to lose him.
His ashes were set free at a very favorite haunt.
Lorelei restaurant, out to sea, Islamorada.
My heart goes out to all of Mr. Turner’s friends & loved ones.
You are right, Redbeard.
There is always hope.
March 4, 2024 @ 1:19 pm
I wish that were the case, but as others have said, glioblastomas are real MFers. My mom was diagnosed with it and passed about 5 weeks later. Incredible that Brit was able to carry on as long as he was. Neil Peart from Rush passed away from the same; he also held on about 2 years, but he had retired by the time he was diagnosed.
Fuck cancer.
March 4, 2024 @ 1:36 pm
Don’t want to keep commenting, but wanted to say i am sorry you lost your Mom

Saw BBS first time at the Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi, MS, 03/2012. Became a forever fan that night as they ripped the best “Can ya hear me knockin'” my ears have ever heard – in addition to the bad assiest southern rock played live since the peak of the Crowes. RIP Brit.
March 4, 2024 @ 10:02 am
Just saw this band in person last year in 2023. Very good band. He will be missed. Hopefully they’ve filled his place because they need to play more music and carry on. Condolences and prayers to the family and all the band members. I’ve just one question and don’t know if it can be answered here. Looking at the dates I’m just wondering if he took the vaccine or the booster. Too many people are going too young these days.
March 4, 2024 @ 10:32 am
Yeah, it’s funny you mention that, because I was talking to him last year, and he was telling me that he got the vaccine and 5 boosters and it was right after that that he began feeling weird.
C’mon. Really? His daughter also had brain cancer long before COVID, yet we’re going to make this about vaccination? I don’t even have the words.
March 4, 2024 @ 10:39 am
Folks, let’s please not get into these kinds of contentious discussions, especially on an obituary. Let’s please stick to remembering Brit Turner and giving our thoughts to his band and family.
March 4, 2024 @ 3:43 pm
Well, here i go. He did not get that many boosters. Also my daughter had NO vaccines at all and got diagnosed at age three with a different cancer
I know many people who had glioblastoma 20+ years ago.
Just letting know what is true.
Thank you for the article on my wonderful husband, i lost the love of my life.
March 4, 2024 @ 4:27 pm
So sorry for your loss, Shannon.
March 4, 2024 @ 6:25 pm
So sorry for your loss Shannon. Brit certainly loved his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Lana.
March 6, 2024 @ 11:26 am
I know you are an extremely strong woman, but I’m still gonna keep praying for you and Lana and Richard and everyone who loved Brit!
March 7, 2024 @ 1:56 pm
Hello Shannon, wasn’t sure if I should leave this comment because they’re always uncomfortable but I sincerely want you & Lana to know that I’m genuinely sorry you lost Brit. I’m from many moons ago that had the opportunity to know the original band long before Benji & Brandon. Maybe saying the “van days” would be better ;). Brit was always humble & incredibly nice. Some musicians aren’t like that.
Wow, did he ever love you & Lana. Knew for sure he was a great Dad but I then knew he was a great guy when he’d share pictures of your dog’s.This was when you had the Lab & the German Shepherd. Maybe, two Labs? Oh, & a cat! I can’t remember exactly what back then but I know you’ve had Labs & GSD’s & a cat. Ha! Oh, & his love of old Chevy Trucks. My Dad had a ’69 & an ’84. Been wanting to restore the ’84 like Brit did his truck.
When I saw that Brit wasn’t at the Columbus show, it weighed heavy on my heart. I sincerely was going to send a card but wasn’t sure where to send it. Just wanted to take a minute to let you know that you’re definitely in my thoughts & prayers. I’m so sorry you have to go through this. I had hoped we would’ve met years ago but that never happened. We talked on the phone once. One more thing I’d like to share that seems to help me get through is, you’ll see Brit again. It’s the missing & the loss that really hurts. Shannon, take care!
March 4, 2024 @ 11:55 am
Dude, really?
We all know I stir up crap on here, but even *I* will say this is hardly the place for that.
March 4, 2024 @ 11:06 am
RIP brother brit, glad i saw you many times, and was a pleasure to meet you X, thankyou for the music buddy!
March 4, 2024 @ 11:14 am
Very sad news. My condolences to his friends and family. RIP.
March 4, 2024 @ 1:25 pm
I had the pleasure of knowing Brit almost from the inception of BBS. Such a great family man, genuine human being and friend to anyone he ever met. He will be missed greatly.
March 4, 2024 @ 4:44 pm
Awe man, terrible news. RIP Brit. Great drummer, wonderful father.
March 5, 2024 @ 6:45 am
Hi, my first time to comment on any article here. I’m from Ireland and got to see BBS here twice in the last few years. Love this band. Deepest condolences to his 2 families. RIP
March 5, 2024 @ 8:33 am
Thanks for chiming in Dermot.
March 5, 2024 @ 9:06 am
My father died of Glioblastoma when I was 16 (I’m 41 now). He lasted 22 months but after surgery he definitely wasn’t able to play drums he could barely speak or use motor function.
It’s an awful way to go. Same tumor that lead singer of The Tragically Hip died of
March 5, 2024 @ 12:45 pm
I got to see BBS twice with Brit on the drums. Last time was at Sweetwater in Fort Wayne. He looked well and played like a poet. Thanks for giving the world something good, sir. Play one for the angels. RIP.
March 5, 2024 @ 1:20 pm
I was at that show, and you’re right, he played incredible. I was under no illusions how sick he was, I knew he was very sick because his wife had posted on this site after he had a seizure during a show. I believe she said then that it was a doozy. After seeing him at Sweetwater, I was stunned how he could play like that. And all last year, he didn’t miss many shows at all. What a cool dude. He will be missed, as a man, not just the drummer. Rest in peace, Brit.
March 5, 2024 @ 10:36 pm
My heart and prayers to all of the BBS Family. Brit was truly one of the special ones. He let nothing stand in his way and he left us all knowing he loved every single one of us that loved him back !!
March 18, 2024 @ 1:17 pm
Thank you all, such kind words for a man who i will miss forever.
