Blake Shelton’s Run of Consecutive #1’s on Radio is Over
Television reality show singing judge and sometimes country music performer Blake Shelton has been on an incredible, arguably historic run of 17 consecutive #1 hit songs on country radio starting in 2009 with his single “Hillbilly Bone,” and going all the way to “Came Here To Forget” in 2016. But there will not be an 18th. In fact, Blake Shelton’s current single appears it won’t even make it to the Top 5.
Shelton’s terrible and immature “She’s Got A Way With Words,” a fairly obvious revenge song against his former bae Miranda Lambert, stalled on the charts at #8 a couple of weeks ago, despite Shelton’s cozy relationship with radio, and a major push behind the song as the second single on his current record, If I’m Honest.
Despite limited touring due to his commitments to The Voice, Blake Shelton has continued to enjoy deep-rooted support in the country music industry, including winning five consecutive CMA Awards for Male Vocalist of the Year from 2010 to 2014. But in 2015, Chris Stapleton ended that streak, Blake Shelton wasn’t even nominated for any CMA Awards in 2016, and now Shelton’s #1 streak on radio has also come to a close. It all seems like a telling sign that artists like Blake Shelton, and Jason Aldean—who received his own CMA snub and has been struggling with sales and radio—are starting to get inched out of those precious few top tier spots for male artists in mainstream country.
Who is replacing them? In regards to awards, it’s Chris Stapleton. And on the radio, it’s more traditionally-oriented newcomers like Jon Pardi who recently celebrated his first #1 single with “Head Over Boots,” William Michael Morgan whose “I Met A Girl” is threatening to go to #1 as well, and even older artists with better songs, like Tim McGraw’s #1 with the Lori McKenna-penned “Humble and Kind.” Meanwhile another controversial song in Thomas Rhett’s “Vacation” has also stalled in the charts and is said to be done as a single.
Though there are still many bad songs on country radio and in country music in general, the snapping of Blake Shelton’s #1 streak is just another sign things are beginning to turn around in the mainstream, and artists of more substance are beginning to find more success at the expense of the Bro-Country era’s old guard.

Never thought I’d see Trigger use the word “bae.”
The tide is turning, and it’s a great thing. I admit I was worried for a good while, but the cycle the mainstream is falling into proves that the circle will remain unbroken.

Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton and Florida Georgia Line all seem like they’re starting to lose their superstar status. Album and single sales are (comparatively) weak, streaming totals are weak. Obviously they will still get heavy airplay and sell a lot of tickets, but they seem like they’re best days are behind them.
Kind of like where Brad Paisley was with his last two albums compared to where he had been for the 12 years prior. Or Rascal Flatts for that matter. Still stars but no longer exciting. Just trying to hang on to relevancy.

Blake’s sales & tickets numbers are actually really good, better than they were for his last album. Aldean and FGL have definitely lost sales numbers & Aldean’s ticket sales are down despite having Rhett as an opener.

Shelton’s sales are false b/c inflated w/ crazy low discounting. For the amount of exposure he gets w/tabloids & 2 nights a week on tv show he has always under sold.

They were already solid before the utterly unnecessary 99 cent deal, though.
In its opening week, “If I’m Honest” out-sold “Bringing Back the Sunshine” by a 50% margin: almost all of which were physical sales at the standard retail price.
Blake’s peak has already passed, but he is still doing fine.

I would actually venture as far as to say that Florida Georgia Line not being included in the new Forever Country project by the CMA is pretty shocking when you unbiasedly think of involving artists with relevancy and a presence in the last few years. I think it was intentional.

Made my day! Blake’s songs are generic w/ no real story or message. He has good vocals when he uses them on ACTUAL country songs. Glad to see this happen b/c for way too long radio spun anything he gave them for way too long. Sadly the other day I was in a rental car & had to listen to regular radio for 2 hours & still only heard crap country guys songs, all sounding the same w/ the same subject matter. The only solo female was Peter Pan (if you call that country) do we still have a big way to go. But ya gotta start somewhere.

September 21, 2016 @ 8:46 am
Excellent news. Blake’s the perfect example of a mainstream milquetoast performer who gets by more by the fact that the masses know his name than by any demonstration of skill. If the public are finally waking up and finding better alternatives to the corporate slop, that’s a great sign for the music.

I’ve always found it a complete and disrespectful joke that Blake would be hired as a COACH ??? for God’s sake . SGAWW had ridiculously terrible testing numbers, a lot of people hated the song. Which is fine and deserved. Optimism wanes though you look at some of what they like (in terms of radio. People still have bad taste, they just prefer bro-country over bitter divorce songs.
Still Billy and WMM are both looking set to go #1 (at least split chart), with two decent songs, which is a good sign. Now if only “Move” would stall out, I’d be nominally happy. Of course the fact that Diff for Girls, which is my least favorite song of the year, looks set to get a multi-week #1 on BB, almost cancels all this out.
Perhaps the best sign though is that Blake is going with “Guy with a Girl” as his next single, rather than the uber bro-country “cold beer”. (I would argue though that saying Blake is bro-country is prob a bit of a miscast, BRH as a massive exception, the majority of his stuff is mid-tempo ballads).

I think they were trying to play off all the celebrity drama between him and Miranda in the press, and it backfired. That song should have never been a single.
seak05
September 21, 2016 @ 9:06 am
Agree, and/or Blake was really po’d at the he cheated on Miranda narrative & wanted to get “his” side of the story out. It was a terrible single choice. Also why I’d be careful to read to much into it.
On a related note, I’m an unfair person, but I really am over the both of them trading on the divorce, so I really hope ML’s album isn’t divorce heavy. I’m ok w/her trading on the Anderson stuff.

Blake helped the drama w/ trying to “portray that he was a bad boy for years”. Now new single is a way to add to the drama. Bet $ he has the new girlfriend in the video, interviews with them together etc. Ain’t Hollywood love grand? So obnoxious!
Amanda
September 23, 2016 @ 5:29 pm
Would give you a standing “O” for that one. His whole album release is about press and cashing in on divorce. Not for the love of music, if so he would of never recorded some of those songs. Best vocal and song from that album is Every time I hear that song. It actually had emotion in it.

September 21, 2016 @ 1:15 pm
I’m surprised he isn’t going with “Green” or “Friends” as the third single.
“A Guy With A Girl” is innocuous and will have no problem reaching #1. But if I were Shelton, I’d follow two consecutive slower songs with a decidedly more spirited tempo track that retreats back to his playful personality and would be more likely to generate buzz digitally.
seak05
September 21, 2016 @ 1:48 pm
I would’ve loved “Friends” but I’m not sure it would’ve gone #1, it’s a little kids-y. I actually don’t mind it Ain’t easy of the ballads. Guy with a Girl is, as you said, a totally innocuous song. I’m just glad (and surprised) it’s not “Beer” though. It’s both uptempo and radio clearly wanted it, it charted this week (broke top 100) and both “highway” and several iheart stations were giving it spins.

I’ve had more contempt with BS than any other of today’s artists because Blake knows how to produce good country (like when he first came out with Austin, ol red, country strong) but the fact he chose to change directions and produce crap pisses me off. The others like FGL, and Chris Lane I sort of can understand, they grew up riding in the back of minivans in metropolises on the way to soccer practice bee bopping to their mom blasting Rascall Flatts and Kelly clarkson so I can understand why they don’t know how to produce quality country. Thomas Rhett is a disgrace, no excuse for his dribble.

I knew this story would come. And as silly as it is, its huge. The winds are changing and this is a big step. And if Blake is smart, he’ll milk the Voice for one more big paycheck next season n then call it a career. I think the days of his undeserving trophies and chart-toppers are over.

This is great news! Blake Shelton’s “She’s Got a Way With Words” is nothing but pathetic, petty garbage, and Thomas Rhett’s “Vacation” is the worst single in the history of country music in my opinion. Wait for the testing numbers. Seriously though I really wouldn’t read as much into this as people want to. If the testing numbers weren’t some of the most abysmal you’ll ever see on a single this song would’ve gone #1. And Brad, Kenny, Tim all stopped being auto #1’s radio didn’t change for the better, radio moves on from artists (both good and bad).
If you’re looking for signs to be optimistic about radio, I think Pardi & WMM’s success is a better reason for optimism/trend change. Also Blake/Warner going with “GWAG” over “beer” as the next single (& radio really wanted “beer” it’s been getting early spins for a couple weeks).

Friends is my guilty pleasure. It Ain’t Easy actually isn’t bad either (of the songs more likely to be released as singles). Aside from the first two songs, “Honest” isn’t a terrible album, most of the issues I have with it are actually production based.
But hey maybe Holding her will continue to climb at radio, as long as we’re dreaming, and MOVE will fail.
Amanda
September 21, 2016 @ 11:03 am
Maybe Holdin’ Her will find surprising success, and I Met a Girl will go number one. Aside from quite a few shitty songs, there are also a few decent ones as well. I actually really like Sober Saturday Night and How I’ll Always Be. Although it isn’t country in the slightest, Maren Morris’s 80s Mercedes is my guilty pleasure. I also love Lipstick by Runaway June. Kill A Word by Eric Church is also a great song.
As far as Shelton is concerned, I think Friends is a great song, but in reality, wouldn’t have a shot when it comes to country radio. And my gosh, I absolutely HATE Move with the burning passion of one thousand suns. Luke Bryan is forty freaking years old. It’s time for him to grow the hell up and stop singing about women as if all we are good for is to look good for him and shake it for him and bring him beers all the time. Ughhhhh.

Brantley Gilbert’s two new songs having a real struggle selling is pretty big stuff I would say as well. And that stuff is his breand and butter. Also, Kane Brown isn’t having the impact people were expecting.
Amanda
September 21, 2016 @ 11:14 am
I’m guessing Brantley Gilbert is struggling because bro-country is on the cusp of a major downfall. And my gosh, The Weekend is a terrible song. I can’t stand his douchebag attitude. I didn’t mind Stone Cold Sober, although it was really quite generic. The people in my age demographic think Brantley Gilbert is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I disagree. (I’m 20). And Kane Brown, is, in my opinion, somewhat of a joke. He is musically stuck in the bro-country era. It seems as if no one wants to hear the same generic bro country songs anymore. I feel as if radio is slowly leaning towards more songs with substance instead of the standard, lightweight, relatively stupid-sounded material.

â–ª “Kill A Word” by Eric Church with Rhiannon Giddens moved up from #43 to #31
â–ª “Holdin’ Her” by Chris Janson went from #36 up to #29
little, giant victories for country music.

In a way, I feel like you could draw comparisons to Blake and The Voice in terms of what they’ve become. After several years of being one of the biggest celebrities in country music, Blake is just kind of another singer who’s popular but not the “it guy” anymore.
The Voice enjoyed several seasons of great ratings and was briefly a bit of a pop culture phenomenon. But now, 11 seasons in and with 0 stars emerging from the competition, the show just feels boring. Even after adding Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys to the cast, the season premiere pulled in the worst ratings since the first season.
Two seasons a year really was way too much of The Voice. Adam and Blake’s “bro-mance” is totally overdone at this point, Pharrell and Christina Aquilera just aren’t as relevant in pop culture as they used to be, Blake’s relationship with Gwen Stefani is kind of creepy and every time they say “you’re gonna be a star” we know they are lying.
seak05
September 21, 2016 @ 1:26 pm
Creepy would be dating a young model (like the woman in the CHTF music video). The amount of publicity/pr attention him and Gwen get is over the top, and obviously any celeb relationship is also used to further careers (& country music has a ton). But stripped down…seriously dating a woman and taking on a role with her 3 kids, shows a side of Blake I didn’t really expect.
Anyways I agree with you that the Voice & Blake being slightly down, but you’re probably taking it a step to far. The Voice just won another Emmy & is still one of the highest rated shows on TV, & to this point Blake has the best selling country album released in 2016, beating both Aldean and FGL.
Ryan
September 21, 2016 @ 2:12 pm
Creepy is that Gwen feels the need to snapchat their entire relationship on social media. It is odd. Blake is all about shock value, so pairing seems right. Blake & his team plays the media very well. Now he can try and be like Luke (family guy) which has been working great for Bryan. This is his Ashton Kutcher phase.

Blake should rebound from this without a problem, but it is still remarkable that any A-lister would feel motivated to record this kind of song AND release it as a single.
And what makes this even more eyebrow-raising is that this song was produced so to come across as a sappy, sentimental song clinically-designed to feel pity for the narrator equally as much as denigrate the subject. It’s actually the main reason I hate this song with a burning passion at this point: it’s as though it was purposefully produced to be as vanilla and interchangeable as possible so to fly under the radar and reach #1 just like any other single of his. That listeners wouldn’t notice how low-brow it is.
Thank Jove listeners proved they’re not THAT gullible.
*
Anyway, I’m never been a fan of Alabama (they’ve just been way too poppy and fluffy in terms of subject matter for my tastes). But I’m glad between them and Blake Shelton that they will retain the longest-running #1 country airplay singles streak. At least you can say their music has been more impactful to a generation of listeners.
Like I said before, Blake Shelton will rebound from this underachiever well. This was much more a reflection of a terrible song selection and not a broader indication of Shelton’s commercial downfall. “If I’m Honest” has sold better than its predecessor and “A Guy And A Girl” is an utterly innocuous third single choice that will get him back to #1 as would most other songs on the album besides “Savior’s Shadow”, “Doing It To Country Songs” and possibly “Go Ahead And Break My Heart”.

Gwen Stefani is what turned me off to Blake. So sick of her jumping on the stage to sing the worst duet ever and posting every moment of their relationship online and with the tabloids. It is so obviously for the publicity. Just felt Blake was more honest and had more class than the way he has been acting for the last year

I thought Miranda & Blake could be next couple stars in country music. ..They didn’t devote time to each other. Feel like he deserted country music for pop !! Sad. !

We have no clue about these two. Both seem happier w/o the other… So good for them. Not a Shelton fan but not a hater, just meh.

Is no one gonna talk about how I met a girl was co written by Sam Hunt?
It’s also “performed” (horribly) by Sam Hunt.

That has been brought up in discussion numerous times about “I Met A Girl.” But hey, Morgan sings the hell out of it.

He’s a mediocre mainstream artist and a piss poor big picture one. The only reason he’s relevant at all anymore is because of the free advertising The Voice gives him. If it wasn’t for that show he wouldn’t have any vocalist of the year awards and would likely be in the same boat as guys like Trace Adkins and Craig Morgan right now.
