Brooks & Dunn Hint at Possibility for New, Original Music
Brooks & Dunn have been in the news a lot lately, and are enjoying a legitimate late career renaissance. In November they were named the CMA Vocal Duo of the Year, 17 years after their last win for the award, and 32 years removed from their first. And it wasn’t a swan song win, it felt legitimate.
The duo also recently released a new album called Reboot II featuring remakes of many of the band’s biggest hits, including some really good ones (see the Megan Moroney and Jake Worthington tracks), and some really really bad ones (check out the HARDY track, if you dare).
But what Brooks & Dunn fans really want to know is if or when the duo might be interested in releasing some legitimately new music. It’s been since 2007’s Cowboy Town that they did. Well, according to Kix Brooks, we might be hearing new music from the duo sooner than later.
Ronnie Dunn never ceased releasing new music. 2011, 2014, 2016, and 2022 all saw new, original albums from Dunn, including 2022’s 100 Proof Neon that looked to rekindle the ’90s country sound that Brooks & Dunn helped popularize. Now, the recent retirement of Kix Brooks from hosting the radio show “American Country Countdown” means he could spend more time working with Ronnie Dunn on new music.
When asked by Billboard if stepping away from the radio show will allow Kix to focus more on new music, he replied, “It’s not that I felt like I ever lost focus on Brooks & Dunn, but it is a good point in my life, especially if we are going to make new music. That’s a little deeper commitment in terms of creative focus and really getting your head in the game and seeing if we can come up with something good.”
When pressed point blank on if we could expect new Brooks & Dunn music in the next two years, Kix replied, “In the next two years? I’d say pretty good… I’m sure Ronnie’s got his own idea of how that could work. But I know he’s been writing a lot of songs. He’s sending me songs all the time. Ronnie’s fired up about getting into that. And I’m certainly not going to hold him back, and I will do my best to keep up and do my part.”
All of this sounds promising. But will we see the Hall of Fame duo doing what they do best, which is reprising the ’90s country sound that is still so popular with country fans young and old today, or will they try to compose radio hits to try and find some sort of moment of contemporary relevance?
“As far as Ronnie and I, we don’t have any honest expectations of having a No. 1 record, any more than probably George Strait or Garth or Reba,” Kix says. “We’re not necessarily making music now to try and fight our way up to No. 1. We’ve definitely had our time in that spotlight, and would it be great? Yeah, sure. But we’ve been doing this long enough to know how the world turns here, so that’s not something that we would have delusions of.”
This all sounds very promising. Now, we all just need to be a little patient for it all to materialize. After all, Ronnie Dunn is now 71, and Kix Brooks is 69.

They were smart to go on Theo Von’s podcast recently. If they release any decent music maybe it can force 90’s country back on the radio. Maybe some of the Reboot album tracks were bad on purpose as a gambit to make their new music sound really good by comparison… (That was a joke)

Their attitude is exactly the right attitude to have as to the motivation to make new music.
I genuinely think they should expect nothing of the radio establishment and just make the music that feels natural and inspiring to them. If anything: if they hit it out of the park, the lead single at the very least could make a ripple from the front loaded acclaim and curiosity as has sometimes proven to happen in the past (Strait’s “Every Little Honky Tonk Bar” going Top Twenty, Randy Travis’ “Three Wooden Crosses” going #1, etc.) when beloved veteran acts who no longer actively chase radio release something that collectively wows many and then some of radio feels obligatory to acknowledge. And even if it doesn’t and the album is great both in terms of its whole and the sum of its parts: it will endure well beyond a frontloaded first week.

Never been a big fan but i like some of their stuff. Hopefully they are true to who they are and not try to force anything too different.

The last real country song from Ronnie was his “Does the Winds Still Blow in Oklahoma” duet with Reba.
It shocked me that these two pop/MOR artists could reach back to their beginnings and give us a 100% authentic country song that could’ve been released anytime between 1960 and now.

‘She Don’t Honky Tonk No More’ and ‘The Blade’ are just two trad country songs Ronnie’s sung since then.

Not compared to the 3/4 waltz that is the Reba duet.
The songs you mentioned are firmly in the late 90’s vein. Heavy drums, loud guitars, the voice mix left in the middle.

Hey, if they’re healthy , why not do another album. The worst that could happen is that it sinks like a rock–which would be about the same thing as if they didn’t put it out at all. Gene Watson and Moe Bandy and Bill Anderson have each put out new albums in the 2020s, Willie puts out one (or maybe two) every year. For some reason, ’90s artists–Clint Black, Travis Tritt and a few others–seem to require a four-leaf clover and an act of Congress to put out new material.

Clint should have never gotten married. His music was never the same after that

It would be brilliant if they do a new album. In any event, I hope we get at least another solo album from Ronnie.

If they make it like their debut; bring it on.
If not, why bother giving us what every other artist in mainstream country offers today.
Cash, yes, but artistically speaking…

Maybe they’ll cover “Should’ve Been A Cowboy”, since they did so well at it. Oh wait

Hey. Ronnie and Kix hit it out of the park in anything that they do together. Their songs are legend and it will be no different now. Such a super duo. So many number one hits. Keep up the good work old friends.
