Cody Jinks Promises a Return to Country Roots on New Album “And, Again.”

Look alive, because one of the preeminent songwriters, earth shakers, and independent leaders in country music is returning with a new album. He’s also promising that the new album will be a return to his country roots as he purposely puts the name and players of his backing band, The Tonedeaf Hippies, prominently on the cover for the first time.
To be released on February 26th with the title track out now (listen below), Cody Jinks will unveil And, Again via his own label, Late August Records. Jinks says the album will feature a warmer and more loose sound—something more country-sounding than his last two albums, Change The Game and In My Blood, which definitely had their country moments as well.
Co-writers on the album include long-time collaborator Ward Davis, Jason Eady and Courtney Patton on a couple of tracks, and some serious country stalwarts in Steve Wariner, David Lee Murphy, Bobby Pinson, and Deryl Dodd. The album will also include the previously-released collaboration with Alice Cooper called “Moving Mountains.”
“I’ve used my entire life as my canvas,” Jinks shared. “It’s on every record. That hasn’t always been easy for me or the people in my life, but it’s the most honest way I can do things.”
The Tonedeaf Hippies have been on every record as well, but Jinks is putting them front and center this time. This includes guitarist Chris Claridy, Joshua Thompson on bass, Austin “Hot Rod” Tripp on steel guitar, David Colvin on drums, Matt Nolen on keys, and Jake Lentner on guitar.

Jinks also recently went on a rant in what looks like a clipped video on social media about the lack of danger and authenticity in much of today’s country music that dovetails in with the title track.
“There ain’t no ass-kickers no more. Let me ask you this. Where’s George Jones? Or where’s our modern Paycheck—Johnny Paycheck? You know why? You’re not gonna have them. You’re not gonna have problem children signed by the record companies anymore. They can’t control them. Why? ‘Cause they’re artists. We’ve got a bunch of people singing songs they didn’t write about shit they didn’t do. You are shitting on my craft. That pisses me off.”
Well, Morgan Wallen and Gavin Adcock are signed to major labels, and they’re not exactly well-behaved. And do we really want people being as wild as George Jones these days, ending up in straitjackets in mental institutions and shooting at people in a drunken rage like Jones and PayCheck?
Cody’s point about performers singing songs about stuff they’re perfectly unqualified to sing about is spot on though. And if anyone has the right to speak with authority on these matters, it’s Cody who came up completely independent, and remains that way to this day.
And, Again is now available for pre-order.

Kind of interesting that he says he’s going back to country roots and the first single was the collaboration with Alice Cooper. I listened to both tracks and they were good but if he can recapture some of the magic from “I’m Not the Devil” that would be cool. I did like Change the Game and In My Blood so I’m looking forward to this one.
I kind of wish some of his non album singles like Snake Bit made it to albums though.

i agree with everything he said. which is why i find today’s willi carlisle album boring and silly same as it’s producer’s last album…boring and silly. thank god for those keeping country rough and rowdy. we’ve got quite a few gems so far this year and three more on the way before New Year’s.
