Country Legend David Allan Coe Hospitalized with Covid-19

81-year-old Outlaw country legend David Allan Coe is currently in the hospital after testing positive for Covid-19. He is receiving treatment, including oxygen, high doses of vitamins, and is being fed intravenously. But Coe is not currently intubated, is said to be awake, alert, and talking to doctors according to his wife Kim and a family friend. His condition is said to be improving.
It was first announced on August 16th that live appearances by David Allan Coe scheduled for August 20th and 21st would be postponed due to concerns over rising cases of Covid-19. “This was a very difficult decision, but one that was made with the safety of the band and crew, and you, the fans, at the heart of our concerns. We will work with the venues to reschedule the show and notify you of any updates,” a statement said.
Then it was announced on August 20th that all remaining shows in August and September had been postponed as Coe, his wife Kimberly, and the family had tested positive for Covid-19. Both Kimberly’s son and grandson tested positive for the Delta variant as well, and have been recuperating at their home in Ormond Beach, Florida.
David Allan Coe also cancelled and postponed some dates in July due to an undisclosed illness. “Rescheduled dates and more information will be posted as soon as possible,” a statement says.
Born in Akron, Ohio, David Allan Coe spent much of his youth and young adult life in and out of reform schools before getting out of prison for good in 1967, and moving to Nashville to pursue a country music career. Writing Tanya Tucker’s #1 hit “Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone)” in 1973 put Coe on the radar of Music Row, and by the next year he was signed with Columbia Records, and became part of country music’s “Outlaw” movement, releasing his signature song “You Never Even Called Me By My Name” in 1975 co-written by Steve Goodman and John Prine.
Coe has had numerous ailments over the years, including needing knee replacement surgery in April 2019. He was also diagnosed with an inner ear infection in February of 2018 that was first falsely reported as a stroke. Up to his recent hospitalization for Covid-19, Coe continued to tour and perform regularly.

I’m glad to hear that DAC is improving.
He is my all-time favorite musician.
I’m not condoning his awful performances (I don’t even go when he’s in town) or his self-destructive behavior, but he can sing his or anyone else’s song with an element of soulfulness which resonates deeply within me.
Godspeed, brother.
August 30, 2021 @ 10:42 am
Glad he’s not in the hospital with atherosclerosis, or some such.
August 30, 2021 @ 11:38 am
You’re the bomb, Di. Unfortunately this will over the heads of your targets.
August 31, 2021 @ 2:50 pm
You guys are so much smarter than everyone else, how can we possibly hope to approach your level
August 31, 2021 @ 8:32 pm
I don’t think it takes a high level of intelligence to know that cardiovascular disease is deadlier to an 81 year old man than Covid is. And because of that, I would advise you to lose hope immediately. You don’t have a chance.
August 31, 2021 @ 9:46 pm
Wilson, How dare you insult Sleepy LaHonky. This man has a jukebox for a brain! Mr. LaHonky, does having a jukebox for a brain cause cervical spondylosis?
August 31, 2021 @ 7:43 pm
Hear that Honky?
Maybe we should bring ‘er down a peg or two.
: D
Ah, no.
August 30, 2021 @ 10:56 am
Praying for a fast recovery!
August 30, 2021 @ 12:38 pm
See what happens when you do not wear a mask or get vaccinated? Well I hope he and his whole family get better. Just like Sarah Palin she was anti mask and anti vaxx. When she got covid. She started wearing a mask. It is so sad people who are wrong have to learn the hard way.
August 30, 2021 @ 12:49 pm
For the record, I haven’t seen anything to indicate that David Allan Coe is anti-mask, or anti-vaxx. Maybe he is, but I haven’t seen any direct evidence of that myself, and I’m not sure it’s fair to assume so.
August 30, 2021 @ 1:31 pm
The left being the left.
August 30, 2021 @ 1:46 pm
@Trig–I wouldn’t assume that, either.
I’d guess that DAC got the vaccine early, when only the elderly were eligible. He’s over 80 and he must go to doctors, given his recent surgeries. Maybe its effectiveness has waned, given how much time has passed. They’re suggesting that people need booster shots.
August 30, 2021 @ 4:40 pm
Even with waning effectiveness against contracting COVID, the overwhelming majority of people going to the hospital for COVID are not vaccinated (in mid August it was over 90% of hospitalizations).
That said, I agree with Trigger that it is not kind or appropriate to make that assumption about an individual person without statements to that effect from Coe himself.
August 30, 2021 @ 4:59 pm
I do not know if David Allan Coe was vaccinated or not. I have seen some say that he was, but I am unable to verify that.
Regardless, this is an 81-year-old man with a history of health problems, and probably numerous comobidities. The vaccinated people who are dying or having serious issues with Covid are often people over 80. Vaccinated or not, this is a serious matter, and I wish more people would look at it as such. And even if you think Covid is overblown, few would dispute people over 80 like Coe have a harder time with the disease. The guy is in the hospital on oxygen and being fed through a tube. That’s not “just a cold.”
August 31, 2021 @ 6:28 am
The statistics bear out that basically, vaccinations give a strong advantage against the original COVID strain and only a slight one against the India strain.
Conversely to the data in America, most of the deaths and hospitalizations in the UK are among the vaccinated, largely because vaccination rates are higher and the vaccine doesn’t prevent you from catching COVID.
The longevity of immunity conveyed by the vaccine is something like 3-6 months, and although it was roughly 90% against the original COVID strain, it may be as low as 20-30% (or as high as ~67%) against the India strain.
This would be a much easier public health issue to deal with if a subset of the population didn’t make it the basis for sanctimony, feigning concern for public health while touting a treatment that doesn’t actively prevent the spread of COVID beyond, possibly, one annual cycle. And the primary (and possibly only) benefit of which is limiting the severity of your own symptoms.
To reiterate: if you are old, fat, diabetic, hypertensive, or suffering from cancer or other cardiovascular disease, get the vaccine. If you aren’t suffering from those things, the best way to not get your loved ones sick is to quit pretending like your vaccine keeps you from catching or spreading COVID. Don’t go to concerts, town halls, or your office if you can help it.
– from an anesthesiologist who intubates critical COVID patients and is vaccinated
Also, unless you’re wearing an N95, your mask doesn’t do anything.
August 31, 2021 @ 11:44 am
Person who replied to me with numbers is just incorrect.
UK hospitalizations are majority unvaccinated (55%) with only about 35% being fully vaccinated.
And anyone notice how low the death rate has been in the UK with the current surge, compared to death rate in the US? Death rate in the US for fully vaccinated people is in the double digits per day, compared to quadruple digits for the population at large. This is not a coincidence.
And if dude is a medical professional, which I doubt, because anyone can claim anything online, it really doesn’t matter–plenty of doctors can’t do math.
August 30, 2021 @ 1:44 pm
This a stupid comment!
August 30, 2021 @ 2:24 pm
You’re scoring political points off of an 81 year old getting hospitalized from COVID. Maybe your moral high ground ain’t so steep.
August 30, 2021 @ 2:39 pm
Countryman 68, can you provide me any evidence that masking , especially w surgical or cloth masks, work? Please post links in comments. Thanks
August 30, 2021 @ 3:43 pm
Justin, there’s an abundance but I suspect your politics makes you blind.
August 30, 2021 @ 9:30 pm
AdamAmericana, link me some from an abundance of these sources. I’m still waiting and will gladly read them.
August 31, 2021 @ 5:13 am
The preponderance of evidence indicates that mask wearing reduces transmissibility per contact by reducing transmission of infected respiratory particles in both laboratory and clinical contexts. Public mask wearing is most effective at reducing spread of the virus when compliance is high.

August 31, 2021 @ 3:02 pm
Studies aside, it’s pretty much common sense, isn’t it? The virus is airborne, you catch it by breathing it in. This, putting a barrier over your nose and mouth offers some protection.
Sure, some masks are better than others, but the general principle seems pretty… Obvious? Do you need studies proving a bandage protects an open wound too?

August 30, 2021 @ 8:17 pm
@justin–Is a country music site really the best place for you to ask that question?
Maybe you can go on a website devoted to knitting and ask whether autopilot systems in Tesla and other motor vehicles should be allowed to operate on public roadways.
August 30, 2021 @ 9:41 pm
Luckyoldsun, first off I visit this site at least 5 times a week, almost daily a majority of the year. DAC is probably one of my favorite all time artist, seen em in concert 20 plus times. Mind you I’m still a young man but was raised on the good Sh!t from my family. There is a chance I was conceived after a Waylon Jennings concert in the 80s. When some idiot wAnts to hijack a DAC thread and take shots at anti maskers instead of respecting other ppls views, then they should at least back up their claims w some evidence based research.
August 31, 2021 @ 7:36 pm
” … and ask whether autopilot systems in Tesla and other motor vehicles should be allowed to operate on public roadways.”
Oh, SNAP.
Bullseye, Lucky!!!
My fav is the Tesla semi.
(Yeah, sure.)
Just when you thought people couldn’t get any dumber …

You’ve tried posting emotionally, now try taking a pause, and posting with your brain. Rationally.
August 31, 2021 @ 7:04 pm
How do you know if was vaxxed or not? My brother in law got BOTH vaccines and guess what? ……
August 30, 2021 @ 1:43 pm
Stupid assumption! I had Covid last November and I followed every protocol. I was terrified to get it. I survived and still have antibodies today. I just got tested again last week. People have to do what they think is right. Unfortunately, there is still not a lot of data and data we do have is still on a virus that has been around for only a year. The vaccine even less. I don’t blame people for whatever they decide. I am so tired of people condemning each for their choice. Really everyone wants to make it about politics. I know people who have died that were unvaccinated and some who were vaccinated. We just don’t know enough about any of it. What long term side effects will I have from having the virus? What will side effects will those have with the vaccine?
August 30, 2021 @ 2:58 pm
It’s pretty unusual to die from Covid if you’re vaccinated, and this would be the first time I saw someone who knows of someone vaccinated who have passed away from Covid. I like following politics but could care less about either party and from what I see, it’s overwhelming the safer thing to do to get vaccinated. True we don’t have long term data on how these specific vaccines will effect people, but short term, I know unvaccinated people who have died, in addition to knowing a couple people in their mid-20s, that were unvaccinated and ended up hospitalized (they recovered). I don’t know anyone who got the vaccine that’s had more than 24 hrs of mild symptoms like fatigue from the shot, or that ended up with serious symptoms from a breakthrough infection. If I were betting, I’d assume they weren’t vaccinated (I know I could lose that bet, but I would be going with what statistics show).

A good time to revisit Compass Point and Human Emotions!
August 30, 2021 @ 2:36 pm
Compass Point is such a great album
August 30, 2021 @ 5:17 pm
Good albums. I like Spectrum VII and Once Upon A Rhyme and Castles In the Sand. Thanks for actually talking Coe in a column about , well …David Allan Coe.
Sheesh, some folks make Covid activism their religion. Goodness. Quit ya’ll. Your not gonna make converts by insulting each other. Really, you wont. Learn to respect individuality and differing opinions. Your life will be happier, trust me, its true.
August 30, 2021 @ 4:20 pm
Really lame people are using this forum to sound off on polarizing Covid takes as opposed to showing concern for an 81-year-old country legend currently in the hospital. Never though the Facebook comments would outclass the comments here, but here we are.
August 30, 2021 @ 5:17 pm
Wondering if you meant the first sentence to read both ways .
August 30, 2021 @ 5:29 pm
Yes I think he means neither side of this asinine argument should politicize the hospitalization of an old man. FFS you people are insufferable
August 30, 2021 @ 5:50 pm
It would seem you don’t understand what I wrote, surprisingly ????
August 30, 2021 @ 9:46 pm
I came here to read about DAC. I’ve been a loyal reader, follower and supporter of this site for years. I wasn’t trying to polarize anything. All I asked was one of the commenters to provide evidence based research regarding masking since they decided to hijack the thread. Now I’ve noticed I tried to reply to others and it won’t let me.
August 30, 2021 @ 5:14 pm
I don’t know why, but I just wondered where David Allan Covid19 is at these days. Commenters come and go I suppose, C’est la vie.
Get well real Mr. Coe.
August 30, 2021 @ 7:34 pm
I just have to lay back and let the thing do what it do.
August 30, 2021 @ 6:23 pm
It would be awesome if the next country music awards show would let Tanya Tucker sing “Would You Lay With Me …”, in its entirety, uninterrupted, and recognize David Allan Coe for writing a truly great song.
August 30, 2021 @ 7:58 pm
Stop making sense, Di. The award shows, and their contributors, know nothing about DAC. They are probably loathe to learn, too.
August 30, 2021 @ 8:28 pm
Truly, : D
Tanya Tucker is slotted to play between 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, October 1st.
It would be Wonderful if she recognized D.A.C. at that time.
Of course there is a petition out, 100 + signatures, trying to bring stop the ACL Music Fest 2021.
I thought you Texans were tough.
As my son would say, “My tiny little mom could kick your ass.”
August 31, 2021 @ 9:08 am
Texans are tough.
It is all the non-Texans that the state foolishly left in that aren’t.
August 30, 2021 @ 6:59 pm
I saw him play before a wrestling match in the early 1980s, right before Rick Flare pinned Tully Blanchard to win Baby Doll. I was 13 and I still remember it. Great show.
August 31, 2021 @ 10:22 am
Wooooo!!
August 30, 2021 @ 7:42 pm
An absolute genius in music and song writing. I don’t live far from Ruskin Cave where he used to live an tell my kids every time we drive by that was DAC’s pad. One of the best, period. The words of many tunes are priceless and mean so much. Get well DAC!
August 31, 2021 @ 11:00 am
Rob,
Where abouts is Ruskin Cave? I always heard the rumor he lived in a cave, didnt know if there was truth to it. Just like the rumor he drove around Nashville in a hearse back in the 60’s which I found was 100% true. Thanks

My late Brother had been friends with David Allan Coe since they were teenagers.I tried to reach Mr.Coe when my Brother died two years ago on his website, didn’t hear back from him.If my Brother had Mr Coe’s phone number it wasn’t found among his personal belongings.I’m addressing him as Mr.Coe because I never met him,my Brother was around twenty years older than myself so he met David Allan Coe way before I was born.He had David’s albums,he went to several of David’s concerts were and afterwards he and David had a nice visit.I pray Mr.Coe and his family will recover.Don’t know if anyone knows this but David Allan Coe wrote “ Take this job and shove it”.It was already mentioned that he wrote the beautiful song,” Will you lay with me in a field of stone” sung by Tanya Tucker.
September 1, 2021 @ 9:40 am
David Allan Coe is one of the greatest country writers of the 70’s and 80’s.
September 1, 2021 @ 6:38 am
Is this why Tyler hasn’t released the next episode of cocaine and rhinestones? It’s been 3 weeks
September 1, 2021 @ 7:50 am
No. Tyler has said his best friend recently died unexpectedly and given that the story he’s telling is about to go to some very dark places he needs a break before he continues on it.
September 1, 2021 @ 9:32 am
Nope, on Patreon he said his best friend died. Dude can’t catch a break this month.
September 1, 2021 @ 7:10 am

David Allen COE. You Please get better my dear!! We want AND need you brother! God Bless you!!
September 16, 2021 @ 9:00 am
You are in our prayers David. Get well dear friend.
September 20, 2021 @ 8:38 am
Masks only help to keep from transmitting virus, not from getting virus! If you have covid, or ANY virus you should stay home!
