Dave Cobb Signs Worldwide Publishing Deal
Producer, guitar player, and songwriter Dave Cobb has signed an exclusive worldwide publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music. The deal was announced Monday (1-4), and also includes the formation of Cobb’s own publishing arm, Low Country Sound Publishing.
The news comes after an incredible 2015 for Cobb who saw success with numerous albums he produced, including Chris Stapleton’s Traveller, which won the 2015 CMA Album of the Year, as well as Jason Isbell’s Something More Than Free, which debuted at #1 on the country charts. Cobb has also recently produced albums for Lindi Ortega, A Thousand Horses, HoneyHoney, Anderson East, Corb Lund, and was nominated for Producer of the Year by the Grammy Awards.
Dave Cobb also signed a deal with Elektra Records in April 2015 to launch an A&R-style partnership with the Warner Music imprint. The deal allows Cobb to sign artists and develop talent as part of his producing duties. One of the first artists Cobb worked with under the new arrangement was Anderson East. Cobb will also release a concept record called Southern Family through the imprint on March 18th. The effort boasts an incredible list of talent, including Jason Isbell, Miranda Lambert, Jamey Johnson, and Brandy Clark. Cobb has also produced new albums from Holly Williams and Sturgill Simpson expected in 2016.
Two of the artists Dave Cobb has most famously produced for have also signed worldwide publishing deals recently. Jason Isbell signed a deal with Downtown Music Publishing in December, and Sturgill Simpson singed a deal with Downtown in June.

What do publishing deals actually mean for an artist and producer?

This was the explanation I put in the article about Jason Isbell’s publishing deal:
“One of the primary benefits to artists to signing a publishing deal is to get their music placed in movies, films, and other outlets. The boost in exposure can be important for songwriters, especially ones who aren”™t regularly featured on mainstream radio. In late November, Sturgill Simpson”™s cover of “The Promise” landed prominent placement in the critically-acclaimed HBO series The Leftovers””an example of what can result from a publishing deal.”
I do think these deals can be big for both revenue and exposure.

Congrats (again) to my dear friend whom is most deserving of every great thing that shall come his way. Dave is REAL & a big plus is that he CARES about the music as much as anyone I’ve known and more than most.

Dave has the “midas touch.” Recent success of artists of albums he’s produced is proof positive of that. Even some of the albums that he’s produced that I didn’t personally didn’t like weren’t bad.
Your playing is pretty good too, makes me wish I could play. It (along with Sturgill Simpson) inspired a friend of mine to change his style of music. He wasn’t bad before but he’s gotten much better.

I know this site focuses primarily on country, but i am always surprised when i read articles about Cobb, whether here or elsewhere, that, when they identify his list of successes, fail to mention the rock band Rival Sons. Rival Sons are one of the very few new rock and roll bands worth mentioning and their popularity has been steadily growing over the course of their 4 releases, all four of which Cobb produced. Classic Rock Magazine rated their second to last release the release of the year in 2014, so its fair to say this is another big success on Cobb’s part. if you think you might enjoy led zepplin style music played with a very modern day slant, and a great guitarist with a sound all of his own, this band is worth checking out. This is not intended as a criticism of this site at all, merely an effort to shine a light on yet another great band Cobb has gotten behind. I often see comments on this site that suggest a lot of commenters here are also fans of good rock, and good rock nowadays is plenty hard to find, so i am just trying to bring your attention to one of my favorite Cobb produced groups, a group that gets little airplay or attention here in the US due to the sad state of rock. if you like hard charging rock, start with their Pressure and Time release, you won’t be disappointed.

I’ve seen them mentioned quite a bit in the comments here so I have listened to them thanks to this site (indirectly). They are great. Another great new rock band is The Temperance Movement. I saw TTM open for Blackberry Smoke and was blown away. Rock radio has gotten pretty bad as well. Our big rock station started mixing more top-40 and alternative stuff in.

i saw them open for BBS in NYC as well and was similarly blown away. That was what got me to buy their debut. i rate them highly, but with only one album thus far, it remains to be seen if they can last. they have a new release coming out shortly. The other great new rock band i love, and that deserves attention on this site since they have some mild countryish leanings, is The Wildfeathers. i have not stopped listening to their debut since it came out, and i am awaiting their new release, due shortly, with great anticipation as well. Three great bands that could revitalize rock, if there was any forum for it to be heard.

I didn’t realize Dave Cobb produced “Before The Fire.” No wonder I fell in love with it right away. “Pressure & Time” is my favorite release by them. I didn’t care to much for “Lights Out” (the 2014 Classic Rock album of the year). The last one is pretty good. If I’m not mistaken, they will be recording the next one soon again with Mr. Cobb.

Rivals Sons are the American equivalent of Nickelback. That is probably why they aren’t mentioned here more often…

I guess your momma never taught you that if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say nothing at all. You are one of the most consistently negative commenters on this sight. Nothing and no one is good enough for you. Many would disagree with you on Rival Sons. Classic Rock Magazine usually gets it just about spot on. I’ll take their opinion on rock music over your view any day.

2 negative comments is “consistently negative?” Umm, ok then…
“Nothing & no one is good enough…” Umm, again ok then…
I love what Cobb has done with many great artists. Both Corb Lund & Lindi Ortega released amazing albums with him this year. I’m excited for his new collaboration release. I love Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, Anderson East… I don’t care for Rival Sons at all. Sorry that offends you.

Survey says: 95% of your responses on this site are negative. I stand by my review of your comments. Your comment was petty and childish. It added nothing to the dialogue. It was merely your ongoing effort to be snarky and sarcastic at almost every opportunity. Try saying something nice, you’ll feel better and you might find people like you more. …and if you don’t like Rival Sons, don’t listen to them. They have a lot of fans already, they’ll be fine without you.

Hey Trig, is there any way you can roll through the archives & check this guys bizarre personal attack (I assume he must be the dad of a member of RS)… I don’t really think I’m consistently negative at all.

Hey Dusty,
You’ve never struck me as an especially negative commenter at all, and I appreciate your contributions to the dialogue. You did leave an especially negative comment, which is your right, as well as his right to respond. As long as everyone is staying within the comment rules, I won’t be throwing any laundry on the field to trying to get involved. We all need to understand that even when we disagree, we can still respect other’s opinions. And it’s never a bad idea to put on some thick skin before heading into any comments section these days.
