I haven’t been on much lately, been busy, been through some stuff. anyway a couple weeks ago, Tezca, you popped into my mind when I was thinking about something. It was a while ago and now I’ve forgotten what it was but I was hoping you had an email adress or a facebook or something other than polluting the comments sections here talking about stuff….
anyway since I’m not on SCM much anymore I figure the best way to reach me is email me RedwallSteev@musician.org and introduce yourself. hoping to keep in touch.
Honestly, I’m warming to the idea of calling Sam Hunt country for this reason: I think you need the bad to be able to point out the good. If country music was made up of nothing but Willie Nelson, George Jones, Sturgil Simpson, Jason Isbell, Charlie Daniels, whoever, by default, We’d compare them to each other and consider one of them bad by comparrison. As a Reds fan, I like having the Brewers or Padres around…It gives me comfort in knowing that my team isn’t the worst.
“In 2008, two months after the unsuccessful attempt to impress the football team, to the surprise of his family and friends, he left to pursue a music career, and moved to Nashville along with a friend with only ‘some food and two mattresses and […] his mom’s minivan’.”
This is fabulous, Trigger. 🙂 Body Like a Back Road is literally one of the most embarrassing songs in the history of country music. When I first heard the song, I came to two conclusions: 1.) It was a brilliant, genius parody of every bro country song ever released; or 2.) A serious song that would very soon be one of the most embarrassing songs in country music history. It was the second conclusion. At first, I felt somewhat embarrassed for Sam, because he isn’t completely talentless. Up until that godawful smog, he was a pretty good technical songwriter, two or three steps above FGL and Cole Swindell, he has a knack for crafting catchy songs, and he has a decent voice, but he does not belong in country at all. I seriously hate Body Like a Backroad (if Brantley Gilbert does not release Bro Code as a single, Sam clearly takes the cake as 2017’s worst “country” song), but I do like Sam as a pop artist. As for country, he needs to pull a Taylor Swift and get his ass out just as fast as he can if he knows what is good for him. Clearly there are more talented male artists in the pop field (Ed Sheeran, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars), but if Sam crafts songs like Take Your Time (sue me, it’s catchy and has interesting instrumentation), House Party (also catchy), and Leave the Night On (great pop song, terrible country song) and release them to pop radio instead of country, he could hold his own and have some success in pop. I just wish he’d do it sooner than later, because he does not belong in country, he sticks out like a sore thumb in a terrible way here.
Oh, “Body Like a Back Road” is a dead-serious song and intended to be a big bro-country #1 hit, which it already is on Billboard Country songs and probably headed there on Country Airplay.
Terrific. (Sarcasm) I miss when mainstream country was good. At least we have great guys like William Michael Morgan, Jon Pardi, and Midland to root for.
I can listen to (not like, just listen to) House party, and leave the light on, but when any other song comes on it is “hey girl…..” [click]..as I change the station looking for another pitiful excuse for a country song.
This wasnt even that funny when that guy released that book with all the blank pages about reasons to vote democrat. And I wouldn’t vote for a democrat any sooner than I would listen to Sam Hunt.
I once heard a radio DJ say, “Some people say Sam Hunt’s music isn’t country. And they’re right, it’s not. The lyrics are country though.” That just goes to show how confused people really are on what country is supposed to be about.
I don’t think Sam Hunt is country by any means. However, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love his Montevallo album (although I hate his current #1 single that is not on that album and is definitely NOT country at all). Not a fan of most Bro Country but I do like some new artists like Michael Ray, Dan and Shay, and Kelsea Ballerini. But again, they’re not country by any means.
I think an artist like Sam Hunt and those I mentioned above needs to be on a ‘single by single’ basis when determining whether country radio plays their song or not. If it has some elements of country in it, I have no problem with playing it.
Most, if not all, of you will disagree with me. I lived through the same arguments where people didn’t think Kenny Rogers, Crystal Gayle, or Anne Murray should be played on country radio. I loved all three of them and they did eventually win over a lot of country music fans – and definitely brought over some new fans to country radio. But there were some who never did accept them. Rogers is now in the Country Music Hall Of Fame and Gayle just recently became a member of the Grand Ol’ Opry.
However, I’m tired of Bro Country and wish we could get back to a more traditional country sounding radio. But I’d rather start with getting rid of Bryan, Aldean, Lady A, Bentley, FGL, Urban, and others who popularized this new ‘sound’ (and I use that term loosely). Once that dust clears, maybe we’ll discover that some of these newer guys would rather be allowed to record more traditional sounds than be brow-beaten into doing this garbage we’re hearing now. I don’t think Sam Hunt is one of them, though.
I love Sam Hunt but most of his music is very pop-leaning. I think he does belong in country music but he needs to get a more-country sound. Michael Ray is pretty country for today’s standards, I have his debut album and while it’s pop country themed, it definitely has more of a country sound and feel to it than a majority of the shit thats on country radio nowadays. Unfortunately commercial country has changed into what it is now and its probably here to stay for many years. Alot of the stuff that gets ripped on this site is pop country, and not straight up pop or dance music that seems to get a pass by Trigger most of the time. We need to stop ripping on all the people that are keeping a little bit of a country sound and go after morons like Brett Young and Keith Urban.
Sometimes I hear people say, “Corn, take the stick out of your butt. Why do you hate music? Back in the day, it was everything is everything, it was all good, you could turn on the radio and hear James Brown, the Beatles, and Buck Owens. Everything has always changed, but you haven’t! You just have Old Man Syndrome.” And I think, “yeah, yeah, whatev” and the whole issue just kind of bounces around in the brain. But you know what? Back in the day, musical styles were distinct, and that is what made a “mix” of things possible. Nothing distinct, and you don’t have mixture — you have mush.
Opening this page my initial thoughts were, “This should be interesting” … expecting links to every article from SCM reviewing his music, but this is actually much better! 🙂
I’m out of town and my mobile connectivity is horrible. I’m having to wait minutes for pages to load. I initially was expecting this with your Sam Hunt space. I quickly realized everything was there that was gonna be there… Nothing. And I’m thinking, “Right on.”
LMAO!!!!! Trigger, I refreshed my page THREE TIMES think I had a bad connection!!!! And it isn’t even April Fool’s Day!!!! Nice one, man!!! ^5 to you, man!!!!
This is pretty fucking epic, Trigger. Damn funny. I couldn’t believe when I read the blurb on the main page, and kind of figured something was up. But you still got me! HAHAHA
I realize this is going to piss everybody off around here, but I’m gonna say it anyway. There is ONE song by Hunt that I like, and that is “Break Up In A Small Town.”
Yeah, it has autotune. Yeah, he is kind of rapping or whatever in it. Yeah, I know all the problems. But the damn song is catchy. I like the sound of it.
And underneath the arrangement, I hear a country song there. Other than the very contemporary, “…she would get down…” line, the song’s lyrics is country.
This is one of my ONLY exceptions to modern “country” music…I actually like this one.
I feel like what Hunt does is not much different than what Kenny Rogers did when he worked with Lionel Richie, Sheena Easton, or Barry Gibb. He pushed the boundaries. And I realize everybody here hates Kenny Rogers for the same reasons.
So, I like ONE Sam Hunt song. But that doesn’t change that this was epic, Trigger.
Classic, Trigger, Friggin classic. Only thing that possibly could have made that any better was to do it on April 1st. April Fools Day. I love this website. Thank You
The thing is that Sam Hunt’s music is not so bad. I can’t say I like it, because it’s not really my thing, but I respect him as an artist. I think he has something to say, and I have heard much worse pop music. But it’s certainly not country, and I’m shocked that it could have been classified that way. It’s no roots music. It’s pop.

Nope, you are wrong. If Country Music was made up of nothing but Willie, Jones, Sturgill, etc. The world would be a better place.
March 20, 2017 @ 9:32 am
Sure…but everybody seems to need somebody to bitch about…and I’d hate to see it be one of those guys.

Clever. Ya got me. As much as you look for the good and the bad in things, I expected something. But, no this is definitely more appropriate.
March 20, 2017 @ 10:12 am
From Sam’s wiki page:
“In 2008, two months after the unsuccessful attempt to impress the football team, to the surprise of his family and friends, he left to pursue a music career, and moved to Nashville along with a friend with only ‘some food and two mattresses and […] his mom’s minivan’.”
hahahahahaha

Trigger must be an admirer of the the great Michael Knowles, which is surprising, since Trigger claims to be apolitical.
March 20, 2017 @ 11:05 am
I have no idea who Michael Knowles is. Actually that’s not entirely true because I just Googled him.
March 20, 2017 @ 1:22 pm
He’s the guy that has the best selling book on Amazon right now.
No need to play dumb. This is still funny, even if you ripped off the idea.
March 20, 2017 @ 3:00 pm
If I ripped off anyone, it would be myself.

Touché. I stand corrected.
Maybe you should ask Knowles for some royalties. He just sold 70,000 copies of a blank book. 260 blank pages.

I second the motion.
