Dwight Yoakam Drops Two New Songs – “Then Here Came Monday” & “Pretty Horses”
Any time Dwight Yoakam news rolls down the pike it deserves your rapt attention, especially when it involves new music. Though no solid indication has been given as to why exactly we’re being graced by two new Dwight Yoakam songs—whether they’re leftovers from a previous album or primers for a new project to come—we’ll sure take them.
On Thursday (5-24), Dwight Yoakam unveiled “Then Here Came Monday” and “Pretty Horses” sort of 45 rpm flip side style via YouTube, and both will be available for streaming and purchase come Friday, May 25th. “Then Here Came Monday” is a old fashioned heartbreaker about trying to recover from a breakup over a bad weekend, only to be faced down by the start of a new week. Yoakam co-write the song with Chris Stapleton. “Pretty Horses” is a bit more upbeat.
The two songs were first unveiled exclusively this week through Dwight’s new Sirius XM channel called Dwight Yoakam & The Bakersfield Beat (ch.349). The channel features plenty of Dwight’s music, along with many of the greats who make up the Bakersfield and California country sound like Buck Owens, Wynn Stewart, Tommy Collins, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Eagles, The Blasters, Ricky Nelson, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt among others. Some of the cowpunk sound that influenced Yoakam early in his career is also featured such as X, Lone Justice and Los Lobos.
Dwight Yoakam is also getting ready to embark on the LSD Tour with Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle starting in June. Dwight’s last album of original material was Second Hand Heart released in April of 2015, which means he’s just about due. He also released remakes of some of his biggest hits done bluegrass style in 2016 with Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars…

Now this is a bit of good news. Dwight is in his own league. Glad he told Nashville many years ago to stick it up their arse and do things his way.

Then came Monday really makes me feel like crying. It’s a great song it is so painful to listen to because it’s like you think it OK I can do this I can make it and then it’s like you wake up and there’s another day. It’s a really great song

It’s too bad Dwight and Tom Petty never went on a big tour together. Woulda been great and they complement each other so well, IMO.

Dwight is known for being a real asshole. I don’t think he would fit in around Petty’s camp.

Yes, I’ve seen him mutherfuck his band from the stage as he spins around with his back to the crowd. Every person that I’ve known that played for him has horror stories. I love his music but it’s not secret what a dick he is. That is what lead to his desperation from Pete Anderson and the rest of his best band with Skip Edwards, Jimmy Christy, Taras, etc. Even guys that have played with him after that line up speak of him screaming at them and being wired.

“I’m gonna call up Morris and have him get the band together. We’re gonna have a party. Party our asses off. I’d love to show them that damn Karl. They’d get a real kick out of him. You know they would.”

Wish the LSD tour was coming closer than it is, I have so many shows and weddings this year I just can’t swing the price of traveling to catch it. Dwight is just easy listening 2 really great songs hope a new album is on the horizon.

Even if Then there came Monday needs to be given more credit Trigg, even if it is or isn’t a leftover.

I’m not calling these songs leftovers. I really don’t know what’s going on with them. I guess they were using them to entice folks to listen to his new SiriusXM station, but I would love for these to show up on a record, or be more than just a couple of songs he throws against the wall to see if they stick. I may review them as well. Just wanted to get the word out first since he sprang them on us.

Id like to see it Trigg…”Then here came Monday” doesnt give you a typical drinking song vibe that youd expect from the title. Well written and well composed.

At a couple of his shows I went to earlier this year, he said he would have a new album coming out this coming winter, but that he would release a few songs earlier.

Dwight Yoakam has always been a Country Music traditionalist at heart, who tends to throw in a youthful rock ‘n’ roll twist in his music. Sometimes, for my tastes he overdoes the rock ‘n’ roll twist part.
His last two albums have been more rock than country to me. This song, “Then Here Came Monday”, is the best song he’s recorded since the “Blame The Vain” album.

You listed “Bakersfield” artists and left out Merle Haggard and the Strangers and Red Simpson? Shame on you.

Not sure Dwight is even capable of putting out music that I wouldn’t enjoy. He knocks it out of the park practically every time. This is more of the same!

All of these guys are out of East Kentucky. I won’t mention the Judd’s , or Billy Ray for obvious reasons, but we are trying to keep it country’s here…

I know what Here Came Monday is about. Thanks for understanding, D…and here it is Tuesday. Shout out to Mr. Dunn for his post, as well. I concur completely with the sentiment that yours is one of the most unforgettable voices of all time. Please continue to gift us with it. I’ll never forget meeting you. … one of the few times I’ve been star-struck…and speechless. ????

Holy crap, and with that Country Music is brought back from the dead again! Amazing songs, brought me right back to when country was still thriving. Get this on the damn Top 40 Country! (won’t happen, instead that rap-pop-electro garbage… gag)
