Ella Langley Chooses Texas Artists for New “Choosin’ Texas” Video

When you begin to run out of accolades to receive, records to break, and precedents to set, that is when you know a song has reached an earth-shattering status, destined to be remembered by generations, and to define the era in which it was released. There have been some moments over the last few years in country music that threatened to do this. The Luke Combs version of “Fast Car” comes to mind, or maybe Oliver Anthony’s improbable “Rich Men North of Richmond.” “Cruise” did it for the Bro-Country era.
But you really have to go back to Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” and its improbable moment at the 2015 CMA Awards to find a comparable song to Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas.” Interestingly, “Tennessee Whiskey” was never released as a proper single, let alone had a proper music video. This was how slow to adapt Music Row was back during that period. “Traveller” was Stapleton’s single at the time. It eventually went 3X Platinum. “Tennessee Whiskey” has gone Double Diamond, or 20X Platinum—one of the few songs to ever do so in history.
Ella Langley and her crew aren’t making that same mistake of misreading the moment. They’re doubling down on “Choosin’ Texas,” releasing an extended, live action video for the song on April 1st. And instead of soliciting the services of Nashville’s star power, authentic to the story of the song, they instead tapped Texas talent to round out the video’s cast.
Early on you see Texas artists Wade Bowen, Tanner Usrey, Casey Donahew, and Mike Ryan as patrons in the bar. Incidentally, Casey’s wife Melinda Donahew also plays the bartender. Miranda Lambert who both co-wrote, and co-produced “Choosin’ Texas” plays the bar’s performer. And then Kaitlin Butts (who officially is from Tulsa, not Texas, but close enough), plays one of the video’s villains, issuing a scathing line to Ella. In truth, the two are friends and touring buddies.
Playing the love interest is Luke Grimes, who isn’t originally from Texas (he’s from Ohio), but who is a more independent-oriented country music singer and songwriter when he’s not acting in the Yellowstone series or spinoffs. Ava Phillippe stars as the other woman. The video was shot in the Stagecoach Ballroom in Fort Worth.
Either you love videos like the new 7-minute extended “Choosin’ Texas” production, or they don’t do anything for you. But don’t discount the boost this video could give to some of the names involved due to the song’s continued popularity, especially Kaitlin Butts who’s featured so prominently. If listeners love the traditional, but accessible nature of “Choosin’ Texas,” the catalog of Kaitlin Butts is a great place to head next.
Even if some of the acting and scenarios seem a little forced—after all these are musicians as opposed to actors, save for Kayce Dutton—the intent was to keep the “Choosin’ Texas” video authentic, and include real deal country performers. The video also features rodeo legends JB Mauney, Dale Brisby, Shad Mayfield, Tyson Durfey, and Leighton Berry. It’s the traditional country nature of “Choosin’ Texas” that has resonated so deeply with audiences.
If nothing else, the video helps illustrate why “Choosin’ Texas” continues to do so well, beyond the alluring Palomino sound. In the interaction between Kaitlin Butts and Ella Langley, it exposes the emotion behind the song. We’ve all been in those social interactions where it feels like the world is turning against you, you feel small and insignificant. “Choosin’ Texas” encapsulates that cutting, devastating emotion.
Will anything on Ella Langley’s upcoming album Dandelion set for release on April 10th live up to the expectations set by “Choosin’ Texas”? At this point, it would be impossible to because of the overwhelming success of the song.
But irrespective of what happens for Ella moving forward, “Choosin’ Texas,” and this moment in country music is her’s, and forever. Yet through the new video, she chooses to also share that moment with others, including some very deserving performers.

Literally my only issue with this video is that Luke doesn’t dance with the other woman, as is described in the song
But beyond that, this video is perfect and fits the song great
April 2, 2026 @ 10:15 am
But he does, in a flashback.
April 2, 2026 @ 8:12 am
Es good, but seems wicked late to me.
April 2, 2026 @ 9:04 am
but timed with the album release it was smart to bring a renewed attention to it.
April 2, 2026 @ 9:10 am
I think the timing is smart. The song hasn’t needed a video to boost it henceforth, aside from the lyric video. Now you give the song one plast push heading into the album release.
Honestly though, I think this song is still top of mind years from now, just like we’ve seen from “Tennessee Whiskey.” It might still be one of the top country tracks in 2028.
April 2, 2026 @ 3:27 pm
Isn’t the song just getting started on the pop charts, though? I just heard it on the local “Hot Adult Contemporary” (as Billboard classifies it) station last week, so maybe the video adds to the push in that format.
Just saw the track list for “Dandelion.” Looks like she’s covering “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” on it. Anticipation building! Hopefully the album is more “Choosin’ Texas” than “Be Her.”
April 6, 2026 @ 12:33 am
I definitely see where you’re coming from. This has been one of the few songs in recent memory (in my opinion) that hasn’t needed a normal music video (not a lyric or visual video that some artists do nowadays). I mean, she truly hasn’t needed it. I guess that I’m more money-oriented, lol, and would rather spend elsewhere than on a music video so late in the single’s run (at least at country radio). 😅🤷🏽♀️
I’m a little wary (please read: but excited!!!) of the upcoming album. Clearly EL is focused on country, but I think that a reason why I couldn’t really get into Choosin’ Texas is because while country-leaning, it’s still just an okay song to me, imo. I honestly think that any of the current female artists could have recorded it and while maybe not as big of a hit that EL made it, still probably would have been a hit. And also, the other pre-releases songs just really haven’t sparked my interest. They really haven’t done anything for me, lol. I like EL tons, and I want her to succeed, but I also don’t want to waste my time on mediocre music. Just being honest.
April 6, 2026 @ 9:42 am
Kassi Ashton tells a great story about buying blow up sex dolls from Amazon to make the video for “I don’t wanna dance”, kinda sobering to understand that low budget lyric videos are simply labels not willing to put any skin in the game.
Guess they came around for this one, lol.

Milking the cash cow ’til the last drop…
April 2, 2026 @ 9:01 am
Hell yes!
April 2, 2026 @ 1:58 pm
It’s a song and a music video. It’s been done like that for a while now.
April 2, 2026 @ 11:07 pm
There was already a music video way back in the fall when the song came out but it was just Ella drinking Jack while a couple dances in the background.
April 2, 2026 @ 9:16 am
This is so cool and a great marketing strategy! And being born and raised in Texas, I’m already a fan of Texas country music. I have all of Wade Bowen’s catalog and a lot of Casey, Mike Ryan and Kaitlin’s. If you don’t know these artists you need to check them out. But I hope this new video just pushes Ella Langley’s career into the next stratosphere!
April 2, 2026 @ 9:50 am
This one feels like a big win for the genre.
April 2, 2026 @ 9:53 am
Not surprised to see Wade Bowen on this list with Ella having written the song with Miranda Lambert. Miranda has always had an ear for greatness in the independent scene, and with her known longtime friendship with Wade, this makes all kinds of sense. Wade knocks it out of the park with each album release, with Solid Ground and Somewhere Between the Secret and the Truth being two of the better country albums of the last decade. Hears to hoping mainstream fans get curious about who they’re seeing in this music video and explore the Texas scene.
April 2, 2026 @ 10:14 am
I’m a huge Bowen fan. Both Solid Ground and If We Ever Make It Home are two of my favorites.
April 4, 2026 @ 12:04 pm
If We Ever Make it Home is a tour de force. “Daddy and the Devil” is a brilliant song and thank goodness it was recorded while Chris Knight still had most of his voice.
April 2, 2026 @ 10:07 am
Hey trigger im trying to find a song you posted about 14 years ago. Something about “I remember sittin in front of the TV/wishing I could fly that general lee” any help would be appreciated thank you for the music news always.
April 2, 2026 @ 10:16 am
“Wish” by Left Arm Tan. Great song.
April 2, 2026 @ 10:11 am
I like really like this, but I feel it was created for more than just the fans or to promote the new album. My guess is that it’s also meant to serve as reel for Hollywood. I’m thinking we will be seeing Ella on tv or in a movie soon.
On a side note: I’d be Choosin’ Ella over the blonde. 😂
April 2, 2026 @ 8:02 pm
You’re probably not wrong. I could see Taylor Sheridan casting her in a role like he did with Lainey
April 2, 2026 @ 10:17 am
Awesome. I’ve been listening to Kaitlin Butts pretty much constantly for the last two months. Seeing her in this really adds another dimension to a really fine country song.
April 2, 2026 @ 11:57 am
I love it!, who better than to shut down bro country than Ella and Miranda, yes, all things are cyclical to some degree, but a good vibe is coming around again, When I was a kid in ’79 and Urban Cowboy came around, I went from Jersey to Lubbock and was introduced the Joe Ely and all the Texas guys.
Funny thing is many of my customers up here have one or a few kids living in Texas, Austin mostly, but they love it and say how nice everyone is.
I’ll get flames for this but, the last song that had this much appeal was ‘Drinkin’ Problem’ by Midland , was one of those songs like ‘Leavin’ Texas’ that you can hear a million times and not get sick of it.
I’m older but I’ve heard a lot over the years and know a good song when I hear it.
Check out Poco’s Glory Bound, from their great album ‘Blue and Grey’ ha! thought I would would throw that obscure reference of to stir things up.
April 2, 2026 @ 12:11 pm
It looks like she’s covering “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” on her upcoming album. Never thought she’d lean this much more traditional after hitting it big, but it is a pleasant surprise!
April 2, 2026 @ 2:20 pm
This song reminds me of Harlan Howard’s famous description of country music “3 chords and the truth”…and I literally think there’s only 3 chords going on there. Singalong-able, clever, and well executed, I think Broadway bar bands in Nashville with female lead singers have FINALLY found a replacement for “Kerosene”.
April 2, 2026 @ 6:43 pm
The guys smoking cigarettes at the table are bull riders. The long haired guy is Dale something, and the guy lighting the smoke is a bullrider too, I can’t remember his name though.
April 2, 2026 @ 7:09 pm
JB Mauney, Dale Brisby, Shad Mayfield, Tyson Durfey, and Leighton Berry. Don’t ask me who is who, aside from Dale Brisby. He has a podcast and has interviewed some country folks in the past.
April 3, 2026 @ 7:35 am
Imma wander off in the ditch…
“JB bought the bull that broke his neck” is a killer lyric in a sweet song about forgiveness from a most unlikely place – bitches tenpenny’s wife.
That record is mostly worse than bad but this song, titled “You for me”, and too “Other people” are good, and “What shoulder” is a barn burner.
Don’t tase me, bro…
April 3, 2026 @ 8:31 am
Meghan Patrick (Tenpenny’s wife) is pretty good. Her recent single, “Golden Child,” reminded me of Morgan Wade and Miranda Lambert, and there are decent songs on the rest of the album. Her music is nothing like Tenpenny’s. Opposites do attract sometimes, you know.
April 3, 2026 @ 10:12 am
I thought the 20+ songs were 2 albums.
One was nice. The other not so much.
Other people is fresh and clever tho so imma listen to anything she tracks going forward.
April 2, 2026 @ 8:03 pm
Great video and the song is great. I’m a long time Kaitlin Butts fan so to see her get more exposure is always a net positive
April 2, 2026 @ 8:05 pm
2.5 million views in just over 24 hours, and the #1 video in music. A lot of folks are going to be googling, “Who is the mean girl in the Ella Langley video?”
April 2, 2026 @ 11:10 pm
The blonde that the guy chose is Ava Phillipe, Reese Witherspoon’s daughter.
April 3, 2026 @ 3:40 am
Ella gets my vote for this years Superbowl Halftime Show!
April 3, 2026 @ 8:32 am
Try selling Jay-Z on that idea. Oh wait, she’s done a collab with BigXthePlug! Maybe he’ll put in a good word for her.
April 3, 2026 @ 6:07 am
I don’t know what else you’d possibly want from a country song and video. Maybe a train? lol
April 3, 2026 @ 2:43 pm
Mama, prison, trucks, rain?
April 5, 2026 @ 7:22 pm
or gettin’ drunk
April 3, 2026 @ 6:25 am
Great video and thankfully no stupid line dancing – which would have completely undermined the Texas-ness. Remind me Trigger, what does the sign say at the White Horse about that again?
April 3, 2026 @ 10:56 am
I and you know that Rich, but this is a family website😉
April 3, 2026 @ 11:26 am
Can you still smoke in bars in Texas, or is that creative liberty by the video makers?
April 3, 2026 @ 11:32 am
No, you can’t officially smoke inside anywhere. Texas was one of the early states to ban that statewide.
April 5, 2026 @ 7:25 pm
There are rare exceptions: Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar Saloon in Bandera, the oldest continuously operating honkytonk in Texas, still has a sawdust dance floor and allows you to smoke inside.
April 3, 2026 @ 12:02 pm
I know this song is huge right now but I was still surprised to see the music video over 3 million views just yesterday when I opened YouTube. Well deserved, keep the good stuff coming!
April 3, 2026 @ 2:02 pm
Good video for the most part just wish the cigarettes were not a part of it. Feels it cheapens the video.
April 4, 2026 @ 8:44 am
…and the fact that the truck wasn’t two-tone. some really disturbin’ stuff in there.
April 4, 2026 @ 10:20 am
Ffs. People still smoke.
April 4, 2026 @ 6:01 am
She is the best singer and I just love her TWANG!!!
April 4, 2026 @ 7:46 am
So I watched that video last night with my better half. The metrics around that song’s popularity speak for themselves, but the new video is objectively bad. About half way through it I turned to my wife and remarked, “This acting reminds me of Sammy Kershaw’s ‘Too Long. She’s been gone too long.’ dialogue in the ‘Politics, Religion, and Her’ video.” The same way your everyday Joe sounds awful at karaoke, it’s painfully obvious when an amateur actor is in front of the camera. Also, Luke Grimes is 42 and Ava Phillipe is 26. So no, they didn’t spend their childhood together. Lastly, has anyone ever seen a woman drink a whiskey drink, much less straight whiskey? I have not.
April 4, 2026 @ 9:26 am
“I have not”
This is heartbreaking, and I’m so sorry that that happened to you.
Shonna Tucker used to guzzle Jack on stage. McBryde same. I’m a studied professional but been drank under the table by female marines more’n once, humbling fs. My wife been bringing Evan Williams home every month for 30+ years, “for cooking ” but I’m still waiting on that bourbon chicken…
But yeah, I seent it.
April 4, 2026 @ 10:23 am
“Also, Luke Grimes is 42 and Ava Phillipe is 26. So no, they didn’t spend their childhood together.”
It’s fiction. They are playing characters, this is not actual home footage of a real life situation. 😂
April 4, 2026 @ 4:35 pm
Ryan Bingham and Hassie Harrison were playing characters on “Yellowstone”. How did THAT work out?
April 4, 2026 @ 8:47 pm
You’ve never seen a woman drink whiskey? Send me your address and I’ll send you a photo. 🥃🥃
April 4, 2026 @ 8:40 am
…that clip of her cma awards live performance of the song is nearly impossible to beat. no wonder this video production didn’t get much further than draping a saloon and some jack and a jackass around it. on the other hand, having ms. langley, ms. butts and the always magnificent ms. lambert all in one clip is good enough an excuse to me for almost anything abysmal in country. not counting lee brice’s latest doubling down though.
April 12, 2026 @ 2:19 pm
