George Jones & Tammy Wynette Series Coming w/ Jessica Chastain
A movie based on the life of country music power couple George Jones and Tammy Wynette first announced in 2016 has now blossomed into a limited series and is moving forward. To be called George & Tammy, and based on the 2013 book The Three of Us: Growing Up with Tammy and George written by the couple’s only child, Georgette Jones, it has been picked up by Spectrum Originals, and will later be available on Paramount and ViacomCBS for streaming. There is no official release date just yet, but now it’s only a matter of “when,” not “if.”
Playing Tammy Wynette will be award-winning actress Jessica Chastain. To play George Jones is presumably Josh Brolin, who was originally announced as George when the project was first revealed, and is also a producer on the project. But somewhat strangely, Brolin is not mentioned in the leading role in the press release that went out Thursday, only Chastain.
“I have a bit of a past and when they were trying to figure out who might be best able to best play George Jones, they thought, ‘What about Brolin? Who’s been to jail in the last 10 years? Let’s pick Brolin!” Josh said in a Conan O’Brien interview in 2016. “I’m gonna do that with Jessica Chastain, who is gonna play Tammy Wynette. She’s amazing. It’s gonna be a lot of fun.”
George Jones and Tammy Wynette were married for six years between 1969 and 1975, but had a professional country music duet career for much longer. The relationship was both passionate and tempestuous, and will certainly make for quality drama, so much so they decided to extend it into a multi-part series. It will premiere on Spectrum as one of its original series for subscribers, and after a nine-month exclusive run, will appear on a not-yet-named ViacomCBS streamer and the Paramount Network.
David Hutkin and Bob Yari of 101 Studios are also executive producers. 101 is the same studio that is producing Paramount’s successful series Yellowstone. George & Tammy is being created by Abe Sylvia.
“I am humbled to bring this incredible story to life with the breadth it deserves and that the Charter platforms allow,” says Abe Sylvia. “Tammy Wynette is an American icon, and I can think of no one better to illuminate the woman behind the legend than Jessica Chastain. After having the honor of penning ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’ for Freckle Films and Searchlight, I so look forward to another collaboration with her. This has indeed been a passion project for Andrew [Lazar], Josh [Brolin], and me.”
George Jones’ widow Nancy Jones is also said to be making a separate movie entitled No Show Jones about George’s life. 28 Entertainment out of Los Angeles was said to be producing the film, and Alan Wenkus—known for being the writer and researcher for the music biopic Straight Outta Compton—was writing the film. This information was announced in May of 2015.

just once, I’d like to see a movie / tv show about the relationship between Tammy Wynette and one of her other four husbands, or a movie / tv show about the possum and one of his other three wives. 🙂

At the risk of sounding mean, I’m not at all interested in seeing a movie/series/tv show about any of those other marriages, and I’d venture to guess most other people aren’t either. On the other hand I can’t wait to see this mini series about George and Tammy.

I think Jim Currie would make a great George Jones, because he has the possum eyes and acts alot like my Uncle. He was always pulling pranks. He could be silly one minute and get drunk and want to kill u. I really think ur missing it here….
Thanks Julia Jones Thomas

Hi Julia. I’m not sure what it is I’m missing but thank you for your input. I absolutely love George and all I basically meant is I’m not interested in his marriage to Nancy (for a lot of reasons, none of which has anything to do with George), and I’m most certainly not interested in Tammy’s marriage to that horrible George Richey, again for many reason. Personally, I think George and Tammy individually, and as a duo, were the greatest of greats. I’ve loved them since I was a kid and listen to them daily, which is now for 50 years. As a couple, I personally think it’s a shame they weren’t able to work it out because they seemed meant for each other and the love of one another’s lives to their graves. As I said, I can’t wait to see this mini series and I’m so happy for Georgette this is coming to fruition.

Or the time George tore up $1,200 & flushed it down the toilet because he didn’t want to pay it to Tammy as child support?!

But Josh already announced Josh as George, and on multiple occasions. I’m assuming there was a change. That is why he’s no longer George. But it’s strange they didn’t address that at all.

Streaming sucks….
What happened to good ole NBC, ABC, CBS, and cable channels??? All the good/creative content is going to streaming…. And if it’s not Netflix or Disney + , then it goes to some bizarre streaming platform with a niche audience.

Let’s see how season 2 come out. Yeah it’s taken way longer than anyone wanted to wait, but I at least have faith that season 2 will be worth the wait. I wish it was out already like everyone else , but the quality of the first keeps me confirmed the next will be just as great whenever it comes out.

Speaking of Tammy, a few weeks ago I came across this bizarre but catchy song she made with a British electronica group in the early ’90s. Never heard this on country radio!

That song was a chart hit here in the UK. Tammy’s last one, I’m guessing.
I was quite a fan of KLF back then, they made some good records (one was with P.P. Arnold, a former Ikette and American soul singer from the 60s, who was fairly big here but I think is unknown the US).
Their story was a little bizarre, though. They once burned a million pounds in some sort of stunt, then one day quit the music business forever, and none of their stuff was available again after that. You can’t buy their records, they have no official Youtube or anything. They came, they made some noise and then they left, leaving nothing behind. It feels like their whole existence as a band was some kind of grand gesture or artistic statement. Not sure what about, though.
