George Strait to Appear at Inaugural ‘Legends of Music Row’ Fest
George Strait doesn’t make many public appearances these days after officially retiring from the road. But he’ll be making a “special appearance” at the inaugural Legends of Music Row Festival set to transpire October 13-15 in Key West, Florida at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater—the same epicenter for the Texas/Red Dirt-themed Mile 0 Fest, and the new Key Western Fest in February. He’ll be appearing with close friend Jamey Johnson for a few songs during the three day fest.
Instead of curating the festival solely around names that are known primarily as performers, Legends of Music Row Fest is taking the unique approach of also including well-known songwriters and producers in the mix, who also happen to be renown performers as well. This is in the spirit of Key West, which has been a haven and retreat for country music creators and collaborators going all the way back to Jimmy Buffett, Jerry Jeff Walker, David Allan Coe, and long-time Key West resident is legendary songwriter, Shel Silverstein.
The Legends of Music Row lineup includes names like Randall King, Jamey Johnson, Blackberry Smoke, Ronnie Dunn of Brooks and Dunn, and Lainey Wilson. But Country Music Hall of Fame songwriter Dean Dillon will also appear, along with future Hall of Famer Scotty Emerick. You also have legendary producers in Buddy Cannon known for working with Willie Nelson, and Jim “Moose” Brown who’s worked with just about everyone.
The lineup is interesting because you can draw a connecting line between almost all of these performers, which means the stories and collaborations with be extra personal, with each day starting off with multiple performers on stage. Of course, getting to and staying in Key West is not an easy task, and this event will not be for everyone. But those looking for a more intimate experience in paradise with some of the most legendary names in country, this may be right up your alley.

Dadgummit. If it’s intimate, I’d love to meet George and introduce him to some of my songs. I doubt it’s THAT intimate though. I’m just upstate from there, but it’s a bad weekend for me. AND I’m currently unemployed.

Unfortunately, the business doesn’t work in such a way that you could simply ‘introduce him to some of’ your songs. You would be quickly introduced to the door if you attempted such a thing. There’s a system and you need to learn it and work within it. I encourage you to join NSAI when you are back working. Best of luck, Rob!

“There’s a system and you need to learn it and work within it.”
: D don’t tinkle on Rob’s parade.
Most of the time, those who fall in line and do what they’re supposed to do, continue to wait in line.

Well, Di. Since I’ve actually worked in the music business for decades and have seen it all, I think your advice is misguided. It’s one thing to take risks and do things that others won’t to stand out, it’s another to do things that hurt your chances and give you a bad name in the industry. Doing what Rob suggested would hurt, not help him. You might want to stick to giving advice on nuclear medicine, and let others who have been there give advice on the music industry. ????

Oh I know it doesn’t work that way. I just watch too many movies. I’m 47 years old. Life’s done kicked me around too much to believe in fairy tales like that. Thanks for the advice on the NSAI. I took a look into that a bit last year. Might be time for another.

Ok, so going to tell you a secret.
Graduated with my degree in nuc. med. in 2007.
i turned 50 that year. One week later, sat the nuc. med. boards, in Orlando. Passed the NMTCB, and received my license to practice nuclear medicine. Was beyond honored to be the nuc. med. dept. at a ranching hospital in the Oklahoma Panhandle, through April, 2017. Where we actually made a difference in some lives.

Rob. 47 for a songwriter is young! You can be writing hit songs when you’re 80. I agree with Di here, fight for your dreams. And if life has kicked you around, then I have no doubt you have some amazing experiences to draw from. Do check out NSAI and see if there is a chapter near you. They will help you immensely.
Have you watched the Tom Douglas documentary Love, Tom? It’s worth tracking down (it’s available on Paramount streaming service, and possibly elsewhere). It’s very informative and inspiring. Douglas has written some amazing hits. He failed his first go round in Nashville and spent 13 years avoiding his dream.
Best of luck!

I appreciate it, Jimmy. I’ll look into that doc as well. Friends tell me that my songs are good – some of my songs anyway – but they are friends. A couple of professional musicians had no interest, and my former boss at the radio station where I used to work has mostly withheld praise, so I might actually suck at it. Haha! Thanks for the encouragement though.

And wouldn’t ya know, the only major city in Florida without an NSAI chapter is Jacksonville. Gainesville is the closest. Jacksonville, the birthplace of The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, and Molly Hatchet, doesn’t have a chapter. Southern Rock was basically invented here. Weird.
