Girl Pukes on Dierks Bentley During “Drunk on a Plane”
Country music in 2014, personified. Drunk, unruly, and making an ass of itself on stage.
Add to the list of stage falls, mass arrests, “mass casualty” events, performers getting beamed in the head with flying beer bottles, rape, and even death, we now have a woman hurling on Dierks Bentley, appropriately, as she’s singing along to his smash hit “Drunk on a Plane.” Jokes about paper bags in backseat pockets and the awkwardness of airline lavatories even seem a little too obvious here. This is just plain old life imitating art—except in country music in 2014, there’s never any consequences to seven days a week of endless partying.
The incident happened Thursday, November 13th at the GIANT Center in Hershey, PA as Dierks though it would be cute to bring some folks dressed as flight attendants out on the edge of the stage “runway” for a little singalong of his recent CMA Award-winning song. Unfortunately for Dierks, one of the flight attendants was concealing a gut full of ugly that wouldn’t be held back.
“Did that just happen?” someone squeals from the crowd. Yes. Yes, it just did. When the unexpected carry on liquid spilled, it sent the performance in a tailspin, but eventually Dierks rallied, saying, “They all know why she’s puking up on the stage.” Maybe because she’s really, really drunk (though some reports say it had less to do with drunkedness, and more to do with stage fright). Then Dierks calls for “Cleanup on aisle six.” It also appears like the vomit incident on stage stimulated some others to lose their lunch in the crowd, which is known to happen.
Yuck it up, fuzzballs.
UPDATE: Dierks Talks About Vomit Incident, Calls it “Awesome” and “Epic.”

“Country music in 2014, personified. Drunk, unruly, and making an ass of itself on stage.”
Perfect explanation of today’s country music!

The country gods have spoken. You must atone, Dierks!
November 14, 2014 @ 11:58 am
The pile of vomit was better than anything that came out of Dierks’s mouth all night…

I was at this show. With the exception of this incident the show was pretty good. I was surprised by how good Eric paslay was
November 14, 2014 @ 2:10 pm
I’m not surprised about Eric Paslay, considering he dropped probably the best mainstream country record this year, or at least the most well-written one. Not quite the most unjustly ignored album – that goes to Lucy Hale’s ‘Road Between’ – but I’m still a little amazed it was never really covered here.
As for Dierks Bentley… gah, it annoys the piss out of me ‘Drunk On A Plane’ was a single, as it was probably the weakest track on that album (and still was far and away more interesting than the majority of bro-country tracks dropped this year). ‘Damn These Dreams’ and especially ‘Here On Earth’ were so much stronger, though.
November 14, 2014 @ 3:15 pm
The Eric Paslay album has its moments, but it also has its down moments. I’m aware of the album but didn’t feel like I had anything to contribute to the narrative. Who knows, I may review it next month when I work to cover everything I missed throughout the year. But I wouldn’t say it’s a candidate for best mainstream album. I think Dierks, Tim McGraw, and Maddie & Tae put together better offerings overall.
November 14, 2014 @ 6:38 pm
My view on Paslay’s eponymous self-titled debut is somewhere between you and Mark.
The two songs he just so happened to anchor the album with happen to be, by far, the two worst songs on the album. “Friday Night” is an annoying, overproduced song that panders to the modern fell-good checklist formula, and “Song About A Girl” is even worse in acting as though it’s critiquing stereotypes in corporate country songs yet rattles off like just another one of those in that vein.
However, once you get past those two songs…………..there’s so much I love about the album. And his current single, “She Don’t Love You”, will all but certainly rank among my five favorite mainstream country singles of 2014. “Deep As It Is Wide”, “Less Than Whole” and “Good With Wine” also rank well up there.
November 15, 2014 @ 4:59 am
What about David Nail, Trigger? I really thought that, with the exception of “Whatever She’s Got” he put out a great album. Songs like “Brand New Day” and “The Secret” were just beautifully written and performed songs.
(Not to mention it’s not like he makes a habit out of tracks like “Whatever She’s Got.” It was kind of an oddball track from him even if had just been an album cut.)
November 15, 2014 @ 6:41 am
Glad you brought up David Nail. I think he’s maybe the most underrated mainstream artist out there. sure he’s not really country, he said his major influence was Glen Campbell and he wants his music to sound ‘popular’ (also known as pop). However the music he records is really great pop-country: think of ‘brand new day, I’m a fire, Let it Rain, the tracks you cited and the amazing Sound of a Million Dreams. His music is first of all quality music, and then enjoyable pop country. I bought his album ‘I’m a Fire’ in June and it was my summer soundtrack.
now I hate bro country (aldean, fgl, gilbert, rice, rhett and farr) and I know ‘Whatever She’s Got’ has been called ‘bro country’, but I don’t really see it as bro country since it also introspectively analyses some aspects of the girl. I know, it’s not such a great song but I think it can’t even be compared to those douchebags.
November 15, 2014 @ 7:11 am
David Nail is an artist whose music will stand the test of time. With such a flawless voice, he could have allowed himself to become another puppet who sings what he’s told to sing. Instead, he co-writes and selects 10-12 great, substantial songs for each of his albums. Best of all–the fun tunes are just that, fun. No unnecessary innuendo. No excessive saying of the word “girl” or referencing tailgates. Just fun. They’re not so gimmicky that you can’t let it slide. This includes “Whatever She’s Got.” For what it is, it’s a great song. It’s a feel good tune that gets stuck in your ear and you want to hear it again. Yes, the rest of the album of is better. “Burnin’ Bed” might be the best mainstream album cut of the year.
November 15, 2014 @ 9:46 am
I thought that as well. “Whatever She’s Got” may have a few bro-country trends about “painted on blue jeans,” but even as far as that goes, it’s not a terrible song. It’s not even one I’d turn off, especially since it’s hardly the type of song he does regularly.
November 16, 2014 @ 12:15 pm
I met David Nail at church a year or 2 ago.
What a prince of a guy.
He sat behind me, and, not knowing he was there, I quit singing to listen to his voice.
He is married to a lady from where I spend about 1/2 of my time in West Tn (I live on both sides of the state).
I need to pick up his 3rd CD – I will be sure to do so from his website.

I was at the concert as well. Dierks Bentley is a very good singer and songwriter. He puts on a great show for his fans. Last night was no different. I like that he is always gracious and grateful. Randy Houser and his back up band were awesome too. However, I am disappointed Bentley has been glamorizing and encouraging drinking on this tour. Earlier in the show he pulled 2 guys up on the stage and they shotgunned beers together. At the show in Virginia Beach 2014 he referred to tailgating at country concerts as a cultural thing and encouraged the audience to keep on drinking. Perhaps this is a strategy to draw in a larger fan base? If it is, hopefully last night will underscore it’s a bad one. (FYI-I drink alcohol & I am not against drinking…but this “culture” of binge drinking at country concerts is getting out of hand.

She just wrote the next FGL song.
November 14, 2014 @ 3:59 pm
Huh? Why are you lumping Dierks Bentley in w/ Bro Country music? Bentley isn’t a part of that crowd. He is just trying to survive within it. Bentley is a legitimate singer, SONGWRITER and entertainer; not one of those pop country half talents like FGL.
November 14, 2014 @ 1:01 pm
I think many artists are at the mercy of the real ‘powers that be’ in an effort to keep careers afloat . Its near impossible to walk away from the ‘life’ , the money , the fame , the adulation , the perceived autonomy of being ‘self-employed ‘ as a musician/artist …not to mention the debt many artists are trying to manage by generating as much revenue as possible from their product . A lot of concessions ( read ‘compromises’ ) must be made as times and finicky tastes change due to forces out of your control .
Personally I think Dierks has recorded some of the BEST country songs around in his career ( What Was I Thinkin , A Lot Of Leavin Left To Do , ) with little to work with beyond his good looks and that head of curly hair the girls love. And yet even he seems to have succumbed to the zeitgeist that is ‘today’s country music’ in order to keep competitive and somewhat relevant . Don’t forget …here’s a guy that actually tried to market a ‘bluegrass’ album several years back . Perhaps THAT was his attempt to not have to play the bro game , as unsuccessful as it was . Sad to see any sincere artist give in to the crap expected of them today .
November 14, 2014 @ 1:30 pm
I agree with you.
Also, the song “Home” is also a really good from him. I’ve been to one of his show a few years ago and he was a good performer.
As for Gilbert, I may not be a great fan but I have to admit that he performs better than Jason Aldean. I’ve seen both of them singing “dirt road anthem” and he was a lot better than Aldean.
As for the general consensus from this blog, yes, country music could be A LOT better on the radio as they often play too many crappy songs. But things can change, start by sending song requests to your local country radio through twitter!
Can real country music be popular? Absolutely. I think the fact that a guy like Scotty Mccreery was able to win a popularity contest (American Idol) with pure country songs shows that people are interested by country music and don’t have to settle down for the crappy stuff [enter the flavor of the month here].
November 14, 2014 @ 2:18 pm
I agree with what you said, but I will say “Riser” was his best album in a few years. “Drunk On A Plane” is kinda annoying, but it was much better than the rest of the “party” Country summer songs and there are a number of really good album cuts on that album. He did go more “pop” in terms of the sound of the album which I could do without, but the quality of songs was still good.
Honestly, Bentley is someone I actually kind of look forward to seeing what happens when his mainstream career slows down, I think he has the potential to slide into a bit of a Vince Gill or Alan Jackson role where once they gave up on keeping up with what was popular at radio started recording some of the best music of their respective careers.
November 15, 2014 @ 9:50 am
I thought the same think, Mike. The song probably wouldn’t be as criticized as it is if it weren’t for all of the other songs of its ilk. I will say that at least there’s a reason behind the drinking in the song, rather than it just being another Friday night in a cornfield.
If it weren’t for the current trend in the genre, the song would probably just be dismissed as a song meant to have fun. Would it ever be considered a great song? Hell no, but I don’t think it’s the worst song in the world either.
November 14, 2014 @ 1:15 pm
I loved everything about the show! AWESOME!
November 14, 2014 @ 3:33 pm
Including seeing the gal puke? That’s………interesting.
November 14, 2014 @ 1:16 pm
AWESOME SHOW!
November 14, 2014 @ 1:19 pm
Girl Got Drunk, Got on Stage, Danced around and puked. All but the stage part happens all across america every night.
Drunk on a plane is all about a guy that was supposed to be going on his honeymoon but wife to be skipped on him, tickets were bought already so he took the trip. The song may seem like its trying to be Bro country and yes I’ve heard it more than enough times for my life time, but put him in a honkytonk on a bar stool and its the same old story.
November 14, 2014 @ 2:30 pm
But she wasn’t drunk.
November 14, 2014 @ 2:14 pm
Honestly I do not understand all the hate for Bentley, his albums are much better than most “mainstream” Country singers. I know that may be setting the bar low, but I’ll take what I can get I guess. Plus he actually did a really good job with his bluegrass album IMO.
I’m not saying he is the second coming of Waylon Jennings, but Bentley is one of the few mainstream Country artists, along with Gary Allan, that I can listen to without embarrassment. Do I wish Bentley would cut the crap with recording some of his party songs, but the guy has a lot more depth to his music than the vast majority of popular male Country singers.
November 17, 2014 @ 7:30 am
I agree but I think he need’s to go back to something more like the bluegrass. He’s becoming a little bro country lite. Drunk on a plane was so ridiculous and dumb and the video can almost be compared to the video of FGL’s cruise, I mean in dumbness. But the bluegrass he did was very enjoyable and if he made more music of that quality and stuck to that image I would probably actually buy it and be a fan.
November 14, 2014 @ 6:57 pm
Couldn’t have said it better, Trigger.
This was an unfortunate incident. Dierks was really cool about it all. And to all the people lumping him in with the “party hearty, bro-country” crap: please stop. A so-called bro-country artists does not make a solid bluegrass album and then puts out an LP like Riser. Those two albums destroy anything FGL, Aldean or bro-country’s Golden Boy Luke Bryan have recently made.
But with all the violence and drunken debauchery going on at country music shows: it really needs to stop. Its bad enough that I have to watch this at hard rock/heavy metal shows. I’m not against drinking (I like a shot or three) but its gotten out of control.
November 14, 2014 @ 8:41 pm
Sorry ya’ll. I had some bad sushi before the show and it was really hot in there…
November 15, 2014 @ 10:46 am
thats what happens when you party with high schoolers
November 15, 2014 @ 11:18 am
The only singalongs the greats ever did, the fans were in their seats. If anyone was gonna puke on their stage, it was the ones who owned it. I doubt it ever happened, though.
Imagine some douche walking up on Waylon’s stage and hurling. Would there have been some ass kicking? I think so.
November 16, 2014 @ 12:17 pm
Kudos to this chick doing what we have all privately wanted to do for years.
And with some serious style points.
She was exercising her First Amendment rights, which I applaud.
This is exactly what modern country music has devolved to.
November 17, 2014 @ 7:20 am
That is what you get Dierks for participating in the bro country. Drunk on a plane was one of the worst songs ever. Please go back to that bit of bluegrass you did. I want to hear some fiddles not this stupid rock bro garbage you’ve been putting out. You look like a total d**che when you participate in this culture too so go back to some real country. We know you have the capability somewhere.
November 17, 2014 @ 2:27 pm
Dierks has NEVER been involved in bro country, so i don’t know what you are talking about? Drunk On A Plane is NOT a bro country song, if that is what you are referring to.
November 17, 2014 @ 3:39 pm
What ever you want to call it for the sake of political correctness it doesn’t matter. It was stupid. And not much different then certain FGL songs about partying.
November 18, 2014 @ 3:16 pm
I disagree. I can relate to “Drunk On A Plane”, and it tells a story. I just went through a break-up and this song very closely related to what happened to me. FGL is just mindless party songs, no one can relate to their music because it’s just that – party songs ; there is no story being told.
November 17, 2014 @ 2:26 pm
I unfortunately did not know of this concert till last-minute, otherwise I would’ve been there. Used to always go to the Giant Center for Hershey Bears games. I live in Harrisburg :p For some reason many many country artists have concerts in the York/Harrisburg area, it’s soooo strange to have them in my area.
