Guitarist Eric Peterson Taking Break from Sarah Shook & the Disarmers

Guitarist Eric Peterson has been Sarah Shook’s right hand man for nearly a dozen years, first playing a gig with her on Halloween in 2010, and since then, following her from numerous projects, and being a founding member of The Disarmers. But after the shows this weekend in Savannah and Atlanta in Georgia, Eric Peterson will be taking a leave of absence from the band to address a lingering health issue with his right arm that has been affecting his ability to play.
“Eric and I have been close friends and steadfast bandmates for over 11 years now and I think I’ve only played one show without him in that time,” says Sarah Shook. “We’ve gone through a lot together and it’s hard to even really process at this point. This is an unexpected and painful situation and we’d like to thank y’all in advance for your grace and understanding during this time.”
Peterson followed Shook through her previous bands The Devil and The Dirty Hands as her primary guitarist. He’d also previously been a member of the Chapel Hill-based rock band The Kamikazees, notable for being one of the early projects of Dex Romweber who went on to form the Flat Duo Jets—one of Jack White’s primary influences.
Eric Peterson was one of Sarah Shook’s earliest believers, convinced Sarah could be a musical force beyond Chapel Hill. It was upon his goading that she formed The Disarmers, and recorded and released the debut album Sidelong. Sarah Shook and the Disarmers just released their third album Nightroamer on February 18th, and are now touring behind it (see dates below).
“We’re holding out hope that we can find a resolution for Eric and he can rejoin us in the not-too-distant future,” Shook says. “And we have some talented and bright sub guitarists lined up for the duration of this period so please make them feel welcome when you see them here or onstage. Until then we love you, thank you for being here, and we’ll see you on the road soon.”

Eric Peterson is one hell of a picker. Mebbe not as flashy as some, but good gravy is he brilliant. Praying for the best outcome.

Literally one of my current favorite guitar players, so crucial to the way those songs sounded in the studio and live. Hope he bounces back soon. Never the less, I’ll always go see Sarah.

Sad news. I’ve talked with Eric several times and he is a real cool guy. He is a helluva guitar player.

Best of Luck to Sarah Shook and Eric. That would have to be terribly disorienting for her.

Maybe he wanted to play country music instead of bad indie pop garbage.

Big “never try to grow/make the music you want” energy

So you’re saying it took him 12 years to realize he wasn’t playing country music? Or are you saying that he wanted play bad music for 12 years? I don’t think you intended to criticize Peterson as stupid. I disagree with you regarding Shook playing ‘’bad indie pop garbage’’ (on a side note, is there good indie pop garbage? Your use of ‘’garbage’’ denotes that it’s bad. Using ‘bad’, or ‘garbage’ for that matter, is redundant) but your comment would have sounded coherent if you’d have said ‘’maybe he got tired of playing indie pop garbage for 12 years instead of country music’’. Carry on.

Some of yall are crazy autistic for real

I am confident that you do not understand what autism is.

Actually, wouldn’t bad indie pop garbage be good because it’s a double negative and two negatives make a positive. I agree with you and he was so darn stupid at his maths, he kinda accidentally agreed with you too (at least in part).

Maybe his arm needs medical attention aa stated.

Here is the right answer. We have one positive and one positive alone remains positive. Positivity always prevails over negativity, thus Doug Too has the correct answer while BDE, unfortunately, has failed at math, failed this particular test and failed at demonstrating his taste in good not-garbage indie pop double poop music Remember now BDE, though poop is indeed negative, we have two scoops of poops, thus we remain on the positive tip.
My work is done.
