Hank Williams III Drops Selection of Demos & Unheard Recordings

Last week in Nashville during AmericanaFest, a rumor was swirling around town that Hank Williams III was going to be making a surprise appearance at the American Legion Post #82 on Thursday (9-15). A Hank Williams did end up appearing for an unannounced popup show, but it was Hank Williams Jr. who was promoting his new Rich White Honky Blues album with Dan Auerbach.
The reason the Hank3 rumor seemed so wild is because it will be nine years next week since Hank Williams III officially released new music, and almost just as long since he performed publicly. But voraciously hungry Hank3 fans have been getting a few welcome morsels from the elusive artist recently as he’s been dropping a succession of demo recordings, scratch tracks, and other random audio projects on YouTube.
Unfortunately, these are not new studio tracks from Hank3, though there are a couple of unheard songs. This is stuff he’s likely accumulated over the years here and there that he’s uploading for free. It’s also not exclusively country stuff. Many of the tracks are from the doom metal side of his music, and other side projects. A lot of the tracks are songs Hank3 recorded by himself, even if they feature multiple instruments. Multiple single take banjo tracks are also part of the set. There are 16 tracks in all so far. Hank3 started uploading the tracks over the weekend.
Out of the 16 songs, there is a good quality demo recording of the song “I Wish I Knew” from Hank’s 2008 album Damn, Right, Rebel Proud.
There is also a demo for the song “Looking For a Mountain” from Hank3’s 2010 album Rebel Within. Another track uploaded under the title “Helpin Good Ole Pablo Out” is either dedicated to Eddie Pleasant, or possibly written by him. Eddie Pleasant was a legendary country music songwriter, musician, and manager whoworked as Hank3’s merch manager early in his career, and passed away on September 17th.
Perhaps the gem from the tracks dropped so far is a song called “He Never Made Another Sound,” which is about a dog owner who shoots the sheriff for shooting at his dog. “I never did live out this song,” Hank3 says at the beginning, “but I know a guy that did.”
There is also a banjo reel dedicated to Grand Ole Opry performer David “Stringbean” Akerman and his wife Estelle who were murdered in their Tennessee cabin by burglars in 1973, and another acoustic song called “Angel of Death” that was written by his grandfather Hank Williams (listen below). The balance is mostly gloomy metal stuff that yours truly is not as qualified to describe or quantify. All of the new material can be found on Hank3’s Official YouTube page.
Hank3 has been absent from the public eye for nearly nine years aside from a quick video appearance as part of an Outlaw country heavy metal tribute he was a part of in April of 2018. Hank released his last record in 2013, and played his last live performance the following year. In 2016, Hank3 explained that he’d been forced to move from his infamous Haunted Ranch property in east Nashville, and that his dog Trooper had died, and that was the reason for the delay in either new music or touring dates. But that was the last major update we’ve had from him. He did say in both 2017 and 2018 that he would be “seeing us again real soon.”
Saving Country Music reached out to Hank3 for comment on the release of the recordings, but have not heard back. Perhaps it’s part of clearing the cobwebs out and getting the creative juices flowing once again. One can only hope.
September 20, 2022 @ 11:36 am
Thanks for the update Trigger. I heard a few months back that Hank 3 had setup his recording equipment at his new place if this is true it’s possible we could be getting something new from Hank 3 maybe next in year or so, anyway in the mean time we got this nice collection of stuff dropping on YouTube which is better than nothing.
September 20, 2022 @ 11:49 am
The thought entered my head when listening through all this stuff that possibly he’s getting all his equipment set back up, going through old files and such, and that’s why we’re getting this stuff now. I do know that one of the reasons he hasn’t been producing new stuff is he’s been struggling to find the right base of operations after having to leave the Haunted Ranch. Hopefully that’s finally resolved.
December 12, 2022 @ 6:28 pm
I’d love to just have a tour of old music. It’s been soooo long that would be epic!
September 20, 2022 @ 1:40 pm
‘Angel Of Death” is a (horrible) Hank Sr. cover.
September 21, 2022 @ 7:39 am
Jimmy let me ask you who the hell are you to pass such judgment and come to such a critical statement about this this living Legends cut? Opinions are like buttholes sir, everybody’s got one and nobody especially here, gives a crap about yours. So keep those vulgarities to yourself if you need to write them down on a piece of paper and stick them up your butt before letting such manure fall so carelessly out of your smegma riddled breath. I’d be willing to bet a million dollars that you are a Bocephus fan. STFU. Trigger, if you could possibly contact me on my IG @ Brett55maverick so as we might be able to get me into the know as I am recently here in Trashville and would appreciate a little rundown of the haps here please. I am confused
September 21, 2022 @ 9:08 am
Well a few out here might agree with Jimmy, yes we all have opinions.. unless you are Facebook and want to censor.
September 23, 2022 @ 11:52 am
You must give a crap since you responded…
September 24, 2022 @ 1:43 pm
This is a great comment
September 27, 2022 @ 9:46 am
Bret Maverick only has one T.
April 22, 2024 @ 11:59 am
Oh shut up
September 21, 2022 @ 10:56 am
I love angel of death by both
September 21, 2022 @ 10:10 pm
Hey, Trigger something just popped in my head & I wanted to know your thoughts on this… Hank’s website has been down for a while now if he were to put a new album out in the next year or two do you think he will sign to another label or still be independent? He has said in the past he wouldn’t rule out signing with another label as long as could reach a deal that would keep him in control of his music & since he ended the one-sided feud with Shooter & his son Coleman signed to Shooter’s label, do you think Hank would sign with BlackCountryRock? Shooter would definitely give him the creative control he would want.
September 22, 2022 @ 4:21 pm
I’m not really sure. Shooter and Hank3 weren’t really chummy back in the day. Hank3 accused Shooter of basically stealing his persona. Also Black Country Rock is not a proper record label with staff and an office per se. It’s basically a passion project of Shooter’s. I’m not trying to downplay it, but it’s not something that has the capacity to take on a bunch of artists.
September 22, 2022 @ 2:52 pm
Yes absolutely it’s junk….. 3 can sing if he just doesn’t piss it away
September 24, 2022 @ 4:22 am
He is sorry as hell
September 30, 2022 @ 11:50 pm
Off of the top of my head- didn’t Sleep cover Angel’s of Death
September 26, 2022 @ 2:03 am
I’m a old unpublished singer-songwriter and these morsels have encouraged me to start back up at 63. Man, this is an awesome article.
September 20, 2022 @ 1:50 pm
“Angel of Death” is a Hank Sr. Cover but it’s got some Danzig vibes on it
September 20, 2022 @ 3:04 pm
I liked his debut album but never heard of anything after so kind of lost track. I’m not into country metal or whatever. Would be nice to see him get back into more country stuff in some fashion.
September 20, 2022 @ 5:58 pm
You “never heard of anything” after Hank 3’s debut album, yet you are one the most opinionated and frequent commenters on this website? Wow. Just… Wow.
September 21, 2022 @ 3:29 pm
I haven’t really been on this site far as a commenter very long, only a couple years in fact. Yea I have my opinions,, sorry you aren’t smart enough to have your own.
September 20, 2022 @ 3:28 pm
Ok, So Hank III,
“I Wish I Knew”
REALLY good. EXCELLENT (and, it kills me to say it) vocals.
Nice production.
Now, get your head out of your back end.
Make some nice, fun jammin’, or just plain, bare your soul stuff.
Not, that poor me, blah, blah, death metal crap.
: D Sincerely hope you are doing well.
September 20, 2022 @ 3:55 pm
‘poor me death metal crap’!??? Boo. I’m a death metal/thrash metal nut.
You’re probably thinking of angry hardcore or depressive black metal. Death metal almost never gets into whiny poor me type stuff. It used to be more ‘satanic and gory’ but now is a genre where people mostly show off their instrumental skills with philosophical or sci-fi lyrics (there’s still bands doing the satan and gory stuff obviously). Definitely no heart break songs or poor me songs though. Now if you go to a black metal or goth metal show, there will be a bunch of depressed teens who think their lives are awful because their mom wants them to do well in school, makes them eat their vegetables, and do some occasional chores.
September 20, 2022 @ 4:10 pm
Thanks for the tutorial.
Music spawned from death metal, is still death metal.
deathgrind, goregrind, pornogrind. etc.
September 20, 2022 @ 8:56 pm
You are still wrong. Yeah, if you are referring to early Avenged Sevenfold… sure, yeah. That is meant for the “poor me metal” crowd. However, like Travis said, most death/thrash metal is not at all depressive. I personally prefer Viking/folk metal the most. Almost all of the lyrics are about fighting battles, winning wars, and masculinity. I know… I know… in the age of toxic femininity, you are not allowed to be masculine anymore. But I still love it.
September 20, 2022 @ 9:51 pm
: D you’re talking to the wrong person if you think i’m of toxic femininity.
Love males.
Was raised in a family of strong males.
Father, Grandfathers, Great Grandfather, Uncles, Cousins.
Strong, supportive, encouraging. I have a strong son.
“Not, that poor me, blah, blah, death metal crap.”
Don’t get hung up on “that poor me” part of my sentence.
Death metal crap, is what i was wanting to express the most.
I did a poor job of it.
But death metal always has been, & always will be, crap.
If you don’t mind, submit a fav. Viking/folk metal link.
Am interested in hearing what that is all about.
Will never forget watching a serious documentary on Vikings, with a family friend, in Sarasota. Halfway through the doc., said to no one in particular – What a bunch of assholes.
Friend busted out laughing. He was coming from a male perspective. I was coming from a female perspective.
After all the burning, looting, killing (i could really go off on a tangent, here) i was ready to kick back with the rest of our crew, out to dinner, in Bradenton.
Rest assured, i believe more people appreciate men than you think. Most people, actually.
But like everything else, the people on the fringe, scream the loudest, due to their insecurities. Thereby, trying to take down an entire group of people, along with themselves.
September 21, 2022 @ 3:49 pm
I’m not a huge Amon Amarth fan, but I’ll be going to one of their shows in December (I bought the ticket because Carcass is on the bill and they’ve been one of my favorites for decades). But I’m looking forward to the AA show. From what I understand, they bring it in a live setting.
September 20, 2022 @ 3:29 pm
Hell yeah! Its awesome to get some new Hank 3, even in this format. And as a dog person, if I was on a jury for a case where someone shot the sheriff for shooting at his dog, they would be free, haha. I’ve been fostering dogs for a little bit and working with a local shelter, and even the shit I see here on a small scale is disgusting. I think I’d be up for the death penalty for any animal abusers. I just adopted my last foster (10yo) this last weekend. His last owner brought him in to be euthanized. We can tell he was just used for breeding and then dumped off. Four more came in with a similar story just in the last week.
September 20, 2022 @ 3:49 pm
Glad to see some rumblings, some of my greatest memories was seeing him play Laylas.
A lot has changed in the last 10 years. Im hopeful he comes back with a vengeance.
In the words of Pantera- “Yesterday dont mean sh**, What’s over is over and nothing between”
September 20, 2022 @ 6:02 pm
Those Layla’s shows remain the best concerts I’ve ever seen. Absolutely phenomenal.
September 20, 2022 @ 4:45 pm
This is so great! Especially since how I first hopped on the SCM bandwagon was through your Free Hank 3 page!
So great hearing his voice again. Wonder why he’s been so quiet for so long though?
Maybe music has taken a back seat and he’s off doing something else career-wise now?
September 20, 2022 @ 4:52 pm
“That his dog Trooper had died, and that was the reason for the delay in either new music or touring is false”
…Others know the real deal.
Very surprised nothing was mentioned in the reason the song was dedicated to Stringbean is because they set his killer free.
September 20, 2022 @ 5:01 pm
You put that phrase in quotes like it’s something I said. But that’s not what I said.
The information that Trooper died and Hank3 was forced to move out of the Haunted Ranch, and that the place he moved to didn’t work out, which all resulted in a delay in touring and new music comes directly form Hank3 and an interview with Alamo Jones from 2016. It goes without saying, that information is dated. But it’s what Hank3 said.
https://savingcountrymusic.com/where-the-hell-has-hank3-been/
May 20, 2023 @ 12:35 pm
What is the real deal ? I’ve heard this n that which I feel some of it could be true ( the here say ) I’m a Hank 3 fan but the reason he’s not active in recording albums touring ect just doesn’t set right .it’s been how long since we’ve heard a peep from him ? So is there a reason ? I’m hearing he’s under conservatorship like his brother Sam , that’s wat I’m hearing ,don’t know how true it is and I’ve heard a lot other reasons from someone who said they were getting Thier info from a reputable person , who knows .
September 20, 2022 @ 5:28 pm
I’ve been loving this. I could really go for a Hank3 tour. Seen him more than a dozen times and it was always the best show(s) of the year
September 20, 2022 @ 6:21 pm
Folks as much as I would love to hear another Hank 3 record I really don’t think it’s gonna happen, but I do hope I’m wrong.
Truthfully I think this world is just too goddamn sensitive for another Hank 3 record. The world is a stark contrast to when his last record came out and it’s a completely different one than when Straight To Hell, which is bar none my fav record of all time, came out.
I long for the days of The Senator theater in Chico when he’d show up with Bob Wayne and shut that shit down. Back when the crowds were truly as mismatched as you ever saw. Old Cowboys, punkers, metal heads, squares and any one in between. Those shows everyone was welcome, everyone had a good time and respect was thick.
I don’t think this world deserves another Hank 3 record and I don’t think we have the right to expect one. This day n age everyone holds on too long, goes for one last record, rehashes a single to mine some pockets and wears out their welcome before bowing out in the most ungraceful of fashions.
I would love nothing more for 3 to have a 2020 version of Straight To Hell. A fucking hell bent boot to the face of all these fucking posers out here these days but maybe that’s part of the problem. 15 years ago this shit wasn’t cool, it was real and palpable. Nowadays it’s real cool if you know what I mean.
I actually hope Hank 3 stays retired. Hangs out with his dogs and does the shit he wants to do for himself. Living his simple life doing what he loves. The what if at this point is part of the legend.
That legend will never surpass however how big, influential and key this man and his music was to more than just a generation of HellBilly’s.
September 23, 2022 @ 12:53 am
“Truthfully I think this world is just too goddamn sensitive for another Hank 3”
You might be right but sometimes I wonder if you didn’t get it all twisted.
September 20, 2022 @ 6:34 pm
“15 years ago this shit wasn’t cool, it was real and palpable.”
It isn’t cool now. Real? Lol. It sounds as contrived as everything else out there.
September 20, 2022 @ 7:34 pm
IV is worth a listen, if you miss new Hank3 stuff. There’s no replacing 3, but I really dig IV and you probably would too.
September 20, 2022 @ 9:41 pm
I really dislike his voice a lot. Like… a ton. I wanted to enjoy it but it is very off putting. Kinda like a goat or something.
September 21, 2022 @ 8:35 am
I don’t disagree, his vocals are an area he can improve on. I feel his creativity outweighs his limited vocals. I think in time, he’ll get better with it.
September 21, 2022 @ 9:29 pm
Yeah, I need to listen again with a more open mind. Thank you for the reminder.
September 20, 2022 @ 7:41 pm
Thanks for the head’s up, Trigger! I didn’t realize he was on an upload tear. Listening now. He is still adding stuff since this article went live. Old stuff… 1986
September 20, 2022 @ 10:02 pm
the disappearance of hank 3 has been such an enigma. i saw him in ’13 in humboldt county and again in ’14. both times he played 3 plus hours. towards the end of the shows there were maybe 50 people left. he basically played til the audience had nothing left and then jumped off the stage and gave the remaining people all of his time. hung out, spent time with anyone who was there. ive been to too many concerts to count, but no one played longer and/or harder. ive been waiting for the last 8 years for an update. thanks Trigger for turning us on to all the great music in the meantime. will stay tuned.
September 21, 2022 @ 4:33 am
What has he been doing to put food on the table all these years of not generating new music or playing gigs? Work at AutoZone? Teach physics at the local college? Run a tattoo shop?
September 21, 2022 @ 7:53 am
Im no authority, nor do i know III. But…i do talk to musicians in Nashville, when im there. Ive consistently heard the same story from differing sources. And its really not shocking or an enigma at all. DRUG ADDICTION.
That is what is said by the pickers around town. Didnt his songs give everyone a clue?
Put it this way, one picker i talked to, did a tour with him back in the heyday. He told me pointblank, however crazy you must imagine him to be, you are wrong, multiply it by a factor of 10! This dude said never again! Ive heard more, and some have suggested the same drug that turned Gary Stewart from a functioning member of society into a bedridden recluse, may have been the culprit.Thats the story at least. Maybe hes sobered up and gotten clean, maybe he will record again. Dunno…didnt Jr have a song about this deal? Family Tradition anyone?
September 25, 2022 @ 7:38 am
And which drug would that be? Hank’s always been a stoner and he did drink, but these don’t really bust your ass unless you take it way too far.
September 22, 2022 @ 9:23 am
Residual income from streaming services. He still gets 400000+ spins a month on spotify alone.
September 23, 2022 @ 11:16 am
Wouldn’t that only amount to about $200. per month?
September 27, 2022 @ 10:12 am
That may be why he’s dropping stuff on YouTube.
September 21, 2022 @ 4:57 am
have a telephone post flyer that I found on HAIGHT STREET SF, c95, as he was to be at the Great American, made it…Friends from Last Record gave me a promotional card of him that came thru the record industry (can I offer those on antique Roadshow).. Later he came back to The Cover Wagon in SF (with rev Horton heat). what a show, what a show with a small venue.. Then next at Mystic/Petaluma, and it was his college crowd acoustic show, I had no tix, standing room only, and I got in after the nice college kids flew when he went thrash metal.. got to the stage, and when he talked to Mesa Boogie about rebuilding a tube amp for him, I understood more where he was coming from.. Miss my nephew John Cooper, in jail, charged with killing his mother, we think it is because he was into metal, the aunt had him put on meds, so he would not be like me.. They paid the price. . Another nephew stated that John did some write for some metal publican, hope to get some of them.. Write to live..
September 21, 2022 @ 6:02 am
Hopefully he gets another record out, if thats what he wants.
Thanks for the article Trigger, didn’t know he uploaded these.
September 21, 2022 @ 9:07 am
I noticed on the GimmeCountry webstore a couple weeks ago that they have a preorder listing for a re-press of Straight to Hell on red vinyl due out in November. Haven’t read anything else about it anywhere, but hope it’s true and means more Hank III re-pressings coming soon.
September 21, 2022 @ 1:21 pm
I’m just glad to hear that he’s still alive.
He’s been gone 9 years? Seems like 29.
After his musical role in the Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia and the Jessco White family, who were all crackers and junkies, I suspected that was the lifestyle he adopted. I certainly hope I’m wrong.
I like his music a lot and would love to see him producing music and touring again.
September 23, 2022 @ 8:45 am
Hey Kyle, are you going to let this racist spew his bile all over the comments section?
September 23, 2022 @ 8:54 am
I only censor comments as a last resort. If you see something that you feel is wrong or problematic, challenge it. Though I may personally take issue with something someone says, it’s unethical for me to suppress it unless it’s completely out-of-bounds.
September 23, 2022 @ 10:48 am
Where is he being racist?
Seems to me he is concerned about a fellow humans trajectory.
Why are you spewing malcontent?
September 23, 2022 @ 8:44 pm
I mean….is he wrong?
If your a student of country music, especially early bluegrass, then you’d know one of the reasons these folks acted and walked respectfully was to combat the hick/ignorant/hillbilly image that was pervasive back in the day.
Remember Hank Sr got kicked out of the Opry as tough love for being basically a drunk and acting a fool.
I honestly would love to see Monroe or Scruggs come back from the dead and show up at one of these Bluegrass Festivals and watch their mouths drop open in aghast at the level of drunken douchery that happens. Not to mention the “elitism” that goes on in certain circles. The fact that more folks in Bluegrass don’t actually acknowledge it and try to change the drunken culture is appalling and betrays any good will they profess with their mouths. It’s become a stereotype of the worst kind.
There is so god damn much ignorance and repulsive behavior that goes on in todays Country, Americana and Bluegrass scenes that it makes my head spin. Just because you can get up on stage drunk as a skunk and entertain people doesn’t mean it’s right and does not make it justifiable.
It’s not racist, it’s just fact, the roots of which weave in and out of multiple facets of culture in America, not just music.
Enabling is only stopped once you acknowledge there’s something wrong.
It makes my heart sink to think that 3 is battling some of those demons(addiction) but it’s an easy trap to fall into being surrounded by the above behavior.
Truthfully though I just don’t know if that’s the case. 3 is not a westernized kind of guy. The circles he’s run in, especially hanging out with Anton Lavey’s progeny, speak of him believing in things that are completely and utterly against the grain of not only his family but the society he grew up in general.
Believing in those things can easily lead you away from something like music and the demons his family has fought and the pressure/expectations of growing up the grandson of Hank Fucking Williams.
IMO what he’s done and the impact he’s had on thousands of hellbilly’s far surpasses anything Hank Jr is done. By far.
September 27, 2022 @ 8:27 pm
You can like him all you want, but III’s impact on country music and U.S. culture does not even register, compared to Jr.’s
September 27, 2022 @ 8:54 pm
????????????
Jr was just part of the scene.
3 created a scene.
September 21, 2022 @ 5:13 pm
He still dropping stuff on YouTube! He’s gonna run out of stuff to post if he keeps going at the rate he is going!
September 21, 2022 @ 7:24 pm
Please, Mr. Hank III, please come out of retirement and play some live shows again! I’m getting up in years, and one of my life’s “bucket list” items is that I want to play music on stage with Hank III, where I’m playing my Cajun accordion and he and I are both singing “Jambalaya”! Seriously.
Trigger, can you forward this request and my email address to Hank III? Thank you.
The Other Rusty
September 22, 2022 @ 6:52 pm
IMHO… Hank III doing this to his fans is some bullshit. Love his music more than any artist and his live show is goat material and nothing can ever come close but his disappearance had robbed us and left his fans lovesick, broke and drifting…
September 23, 2022 @ 3:14 am
He owes the fans nothing.
If for whatever reason, he’s done, so be it.
I’m glad for the records he put out.
September 24, 2022 @ 1:23 pm
Fuck yeah!!!!!! I hope this means he’s think about hitting the road sometime soon. I would sell other men’s testicles to see him.
September 27, 2022 @ 7:48 pm
Thanks For Letting Us Know About These Releases!!
October 18, 2022 @ 12:41 pm
is it just me or does Hank 3’s voice sound terrible on the new country songs? I’m a huge fan of his but can’t listen to any of this 🙁
October 19, 2022 @ 6:24 pm
Based purely off of what Hanks been releasing on facebook a month out or so now, It’s mostly metal or heavily dissonanced industrial rock sounding tracks. If we even got a tour, I’m skeptical of how country it would be, but you never know. We are living in the current underground country music golden era at present, but hank 3 is in a league of his own for sure. visionary!
November 18, 2022 @ 5:13 pm
Seen him once up in Michigan, Those Poor Bastards opened. He did a 2 and a half hour set. Classic smooth country for the first and bat ???? shit crazy metal for the last. I’m guessing that demon likker got him. It almost got me, and it takes a while to get outta that trap ????. Just glad he’s posting again, though he does seem a bit off…
December 13, 2022 @ 3:01 am
I think he sounds like his Grandfather.
April 2, 2023 @ 3:57 am
it dont matter if it’s country, metal or punk what hank3 does is honest music loved appreciated his music has always been there to help through hard time’s…hank3 i thank you…your authentic, a legend you do shit right, you know that…all the haters wouldn’t know now give my shoe back and dont let the door hit ya
August 20, 2023 @ 8:22 pm
will hank 3 tour with his son Iv and the strange band ?
October 20, 2023 @ 5:13 pm
Old school Hank III fan back from 2003 ish…. Man I’d love to see a Hank III revival of sorts. Had his albums on cassette and CD. Just now finding cool vinyl and it sounds stellar.
At least if we can’t get new material he could tour on the old stuff. I’d be beyond cool with that.
March 4, 2024 @ 5:50 pm
Wherever he is I hope he picks up a guitar and fires up the tubes on the Green Amp and just starts chuggin. I was at a Eyehategod show a few months back here in Nola and was amazed at how many Hank III fans was amongst me. We are family. When or if he ever takes the stage again we will be there supporting him.
October 8, 2024 @ 2:03 pm
Hey all!
I knew a little about 3 from stuff in the 90’s and kinda changed my directions, recently saw him to my surprise on wild whites of West Virginia, I was watching it last night and said out loud, that’s fucking Hank 3! My dog jumped. Nevertheless I saw this post regarding him. He’s definitely created something far out and badass, I hope to hear more from him and it’d be nice to know he’s above ground and kickin.
