Hayes Carll + Band of Heathens = Supergroup “Hayes & the Heathens”
It’s always twice as exciting when cool artists band together in a collaborative effort. Hayes Carll has been on the forefront of modern songwriting ever since releasing his album Trouble In Mind in 2008, and Band of Heathens have been an Austin music institution for going on 20 years. The Heathens also have a strong history of collaborating with others and backing performers in concert, so it was only a matter of time before they slid behind Hayes for something bigger.
Just announced, Hayes Carll and the Band of Heathens have officially formed a supergroup called Hayes and the Heathens. They’ll release an eponymous debut album on October 4th, with a new single “Any Other Way” out now (listen below). And yes, there are live dates as well, stretching through September and October, with more on the way for December (see below).
“Our collaboration was so natural and easy,” says Ed Jurdi of Band of Heathens. “We’ve been great compadres for such a long time, and it was just the right time for this project to come to life. I think you can really hear all of that in the music. This is really that rare alliance where 1+1 = 3.”
Carll along with Jurdi, Quist and some more co-writers penned seven of the eight tracks on the album. The group also covers the “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers that became a big American hit in 1993. The other song “Nobody Dies From Weed” is something Hayes Carll penned with Driver Williams that was released on 4/20 with the Heathens behind him. But at that time, we didn’t know this collaboration had grown into a bigger thing.
“Leaning into each other’s strengths we found some sonic territory new to all of us, something between country-funk and good-time boogie,” says Gordy Quist. “The deciding factor for all of our creative choices on the record came down to the simple question of what sounds more fun.”
Though Hayes and the Heathens have been playing together on and off for a decade or so, it was a big jam out in Luckenbach, TX in 2023 that inspired them to make the supergroup official. The debut album was recorded at the Heathen’s studio The Finishing School in Austin.
“We’ve played a lot of music together over the last 10 years,” says Hayes Carll, “and our creative relationship continues to evolve into its own thing. Hayes & The Heathens is that thing.”

Heathens backed Hayes on tour about 5 years ago. It was awesome! A lot of good players in that crew.

“Something between country-funk and good-time boogie” – oh hell yes. That’s my sweet spot. This could be amazing.

They’ve been doing shows together for awhile. There was supposed to be some Todd Snider, Hayes and the Heathens shows before Todd was forced to cancel for health reasons.

I am a bit over the weed songs everywhere. Sorry, I know people who HAVE died from weed (led to depression and suicide) and also people who have ruined their life and their family’s life because of it.
Look, I don’t want to get political etc, and obviously not everyone is hurt by it.
But most people respect the dark side of alcohol, so we should apply the same standards.
Its not a hill to die on, just really puts me off some albums, such as Molly Tuttle’s bluegrass albums, and the otherwise incredible “This one’s for him” tribute album.
Otherwise, Hayes Carll is ok. I like KMAG YOYO, but most his other work is lackluster.

I agree the weed tracks have run their course. It used to be edgy. Now it just feels silly.

Yeah, a lot of folks are acting like this is old news, but Hayes and the Heathens officially made it official a few days ago. They’ve been performing together for 10 years or so, but now is when they decided to christen it a supergroup and release an official album.

The song has a good vibe, but he’s a rather pedestrian vocalist.

I’ve been a big fan of Hayes over the years. I played the shit out of Trouble In Mind and Kmag Yoyo. His albums since have seemed to have less of an effect on me, though each has some good songs. Band Of Heathens similarly is another band that seems I’ve been listening to forever.
I’m interested to see how this album shakes out. Listening to the first couple songs it seems to have brought back some excitement for Carll. This could end up being career boosters for both him and the Heathen’s, both who have already had a long stretch in an industry that looses interest fast.

I saw Hayes & Heathens last spring and they put on a great show. Looking forward for a repeat at Mile 0 fest this year on the main stage but also hope to see individual performances.

Saw them in Luckenbach last night – just a fabulous show – hope to see a possible Trigger review now that the record has been released – they played a great mix of new songs/heathens/hayes tunes – so glad I decided to make the drive!
