How Will Banister Got to Sing on Clint Eastwood’s ‘Cry Macho’
Clint Eastwood’s latest flick called Cry Macho opened in theaters and debuted on HBO Max on September 17th, and with Dwight Yoakam cast as one of the central characters in the film, interest from the country music community has been strong. But Yoakam’s involvement is not the only country music tie-in.
The opening song from the movie’s soundtrack called “Find a New Home” was specifically written by Grammy-winning film composer Mark Mancina to set the mood by foreshadowing elements of the film. Though they had a great song, they also needed the right singer to perform it. And instead of getting some big name to perform “Find a New Home,” through a crazy set of circumstances, the opportunity landed in the lap of independent country singer and songwriter Will Banister from Portales, New Mexico, near the Texas border.
Since Cry Macho is set in Texas and Mexico, they wanted somebody from the region. So film composer Marlon Espino got in contact with an old college roommate down in Texas to see if they had any suggestions of someone who might fit the role of an authentic country voice, and Will Banister’s name was floated. So Banister was sent the track to what at the time he thought was just some sort of indie film project, and he recorded the vocal take at home in what he thought was just an audition, with a studio take to be done in California if they liked what they heard.
Apparently, Clint Eastwood liked what he heard so much, he decided to keep the vocal track as-is, and it’s now the first thing you hear as the film opens. “That guy’s voice is from the top of those speakers down to your feet,” Clint Eastwood said about Will Banister’s contribution. Even though they kept the original take, they flew Banister out to California anyway to meet Clint Eastwood and perform at his private golf course in Carmel.
“I am a super fan of Mr. Eastwood’s,” says Will Banister. “I watched a lot of his movies growing up and he was the kind of guy you wanted to be as a kid. Getting the chance to meet him and perform for him was quite an honor. He is as down to earth as I thought he would be. To hear my voice at the opening of ‘Cry Macho’ was such an honor!”
Cry Macho follows Mike Milo (played by Clint Eastwood), who is a washed up rodeo star who was severely inured, which lead to issues with drugs and alcohol. After being let go from his position as a horse trainer, he’s hired by his former boss (played by Dwight Yoakam) to go down to Mexico and retrieve his son, Rafo from the boy’s unstable mother. While traveling through rural Mexico, the two encounter challenges and become close.
Will Banister has been an independent country artist since 2010 when he released his debut album Turned Her Onto Country. He’s known through performances of both cover songs and originals, and of course, for his voice that was custom made for traditional country. Bannister released his latest album Everything Burns in 2020, and will be releasing a new single called “Out of Her Mind” co-written with Wyatt McCubbin and Roger Springer on September 24th.

Thanks for giving this some attention. I watched the movie this past weekend and hearing this song at the beginning had me all sorts of confused. Was this an old song I had just never heard before? Was this a new song? The voice sounded familiar yet it didn’t. Whatever it was it was perfect for the beginning of this Clint Eastwood movie. Glad to discover a new artist, happy to see independent artists are getting gigs like this, and props to Clint for keeping the vocal track as-is.

That’s what I thought, son I thought it was an old song I’d somehow never head. And a really good song with Merle never sounding better. Ooops! Go Will Banister!!

I’m glad you decided to write about this. I just watched the movie, and loved the opening song. I’d obviously never heard it before, and wondered if it was some obscure cut from some obscure singer from the 70’s. I’m dead serious. I’m impressed.

Also, now that I know who this kid is, I’m wondering why you’ve never mentioned him before.

I knew who he was and knew his music. A reader reached out about him a year or two ago, and Will has also tagged me on some stuff on Instagram so I was familiar with who he was. But I had not featured him previously.

Was wondering the same thing. Just finished listening to “Everything Burns,” his most recent. Dripping in pedal steel, fiddle and Telecaster twang, this stuff is good! Bout time you threw this fella a write up. Think he’s got a new release dropping in a few days. Once again, Trig, thanks for making me aware of a singer and music l can get into.

I’ve been listening to Will’s YouTube channel all day. He’s the best I’ve heard since Daryle Singletary. I can’t believe he’s not famous, especially when I start thinking about all the non-mainstream performers who ARE famous. This world is so screwed up.

Yes I did, but I like every movie Eastwood ever made, so it’s hard to say whether or not the movie itself was good, versus being good because it’s an Eastwood movie. It’s a nice story with a happy ending.
Eastwood’s age requires you to use your imagination at times. He’s 91, but the actress who plays the boy’s mom can’t be over 40, and she tries to bed him. Also, the actress who plays his love interest is probably in her mid 50’s. I think Mike Milo is supposed to be in his early 70s, but at 91, old Clint just hobbles around too much for that to be believable. There’s also a seen where he punches a young guy.
In spite of all that, if you’re an Eastwood fan, or even a fan of movies about old broke down cowboys, you’ll like the movie.

I’m with you, Honky. Aside from PAINT YOUR WAGON, I like every movie Clint has made. And that includes TARANTULA and REVENGE OF THE CREATURE! But yeah, some of the scenes with the ladies require suspension of disbelief. He’s a good 25 or 30 years older than his love interest.

I’m going to go out on a limb here (and yes, i shouldn’t) but i am willing to bet Clint still has some moves in the boudoir.
So, seeing how it’s Clint – and i am betting he is still one suave devil, i’m not finding it too difficult to think he could still love a woman.

Di,
I’m not commenting on Clint’s “abilities”. I’m questioning whether or not it’s realistic to believe that a vibrant, 39 year-old smoke-show would be sexually attracted to a feeble, wrinkly, emaciated 91 year old man. I just felt it was extreme. Everyone eventually ages out of being attractive, even Eastwood.

This guy is the real deal. His latest album, Everything Burns, was one of my most favorite discoveries last year, and it’s definitely one of the best recent country albums I’ve heard in a long time. I recommend it to anyone who misses mid-late 90’s style neo-traditional country from guys like Daryle Singletary, Mark Chesnutt, Tracy Byrd, etc. I really enjoy every song on the record, but I especially love the title track, which was co-written by Roger Springer who also had in writing many mid-late late 90’s country gems like Chesnutt’s “Thank God For Believers” and Sammy Kershaw’s “Matches.” This album especially sounds like something that could’ve came out around that era, which to me, is a good thing.
Will Banister also has one of the best new neo-traditional country voices I’ve heard in a while, and I’m glad to see him gaining further exposure through this new Eastwood film. I’m also glad to see him finally get a mention on this site! Hope he continues to gain more and more exposure from this point on.
Btw, Cry Macho looks like a new movie that’s actually worth watching, as well.

They way Will Banister covered Conway Twitty’s ‘ It’s Only Make Believe’,
and hit every note just like the original song, sold me on him. Then the same thing on George Jones ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today’, and Vern Gosdin ‘Chiseled In Stone’. He deserves all the fame of anyone out there.

Watched the movied and had to look this guy up. I thought it was Merle singing. Then I heard some of his other stuff and he even sometimes sounds a bit like George Strait. So long as Trashville doesn’t screw him over he is one of the few voices to sing True Country music these days.

Portales, New Mexico doesn’t have a movie theater anymore. It burned down March 10th 1978 and the movie featured on the marquee on that day was “The Guantlette” with Clint Eastwood. The theater reopened again as “The Tower Twin” but it could never be as great as the original “Tower Theater” on “The Square” in Downtown Portales, New Mexico.

I’m not much of an Eastwood fan. I like some of his older Westerns, but I don’t think he’s a great actor. There is certainly nothing in his personal life that inspires any admiration either. He’s pretty much a libertine scumbag.

I’ll say it, that movie was bad.
Love a lot of Eastwoods movies but this movie was far-fetched.
No way that old man could break a wild horse.
And I mean come on, a 91 year old lady slayer?
That Mexican kid had the most corny dialogue.
I just wanted him to shut the fuck about Macho the rooster.
The punch scene was too much.
Why the hell would you send an old feeble man like that to Mexico?
My gf (of course she would) pointed out at the crazy Mexican lady’s mansion that she had LED ceiling lights. Movie is suppose to be set in the early 70’s.
Eastwood just by himself was pretty good.
His old man shit talking was entertaining at least.
However, they should have picked a younger person to play Mike Milo.
Replaced that kid with someone that actually looks half white and less corny dialogue.
I really didn’t get a sense how bad the kids situation was at home/mansion.
He probably got those beat marks from running around the streets and never shutting up about the rooster and his name Macho.
Had a hard time believing the kid’s hot Mexican mom was just a pill popping rich whore who lives in Mexico, D.F. and would sleep with a poor 91 year old grandpa just cause.
She looked more like a vicious cartel’s wife.

Great song. Has a real 1970s sound to. Love it. I enjoyed the movie . The scenes with the rooster were funny and had the typical Clint one liners. For him being 91, it is amazing. He came off as a man in his 70s to me. It seems realistic that a woman in her late 40s early 50s would shack up with a man like Clint’s character. I’m a horse woman myself and we all move a little slower and are banged up. Buy the soundtrack and watch the movie.

After seeing Cry Macho in the theater…I loved Will Bannister vocal so much…two friends and myself looked up where we could see him in person. So we drove to Albuquerque New Mexico to see him at the Dirty Bourbon Saloon…..what can I say…we were not disappointed…he was awesome!!! Yes…he does sound like a young merle Haggard….but with a refreshing easy listening….can’t. enough of it sound. I definitely will be following his career!
