In the Snow, Zach Bryan Plays Red Rocks Set for the Ages

Every performance at the historic Red Rocks Ampitheater in Morrison, Colorado is exceptional due to the setting. This is the reason so many fans flock to the venue at great expense to see their favorite artists perform there in lieu of other venues. But Zach Bryan’s stop on Thursday, November 3rd was extra noteworthy for a host of reasons. Many can say they’ve seen Zach Bryan live. Few can say they’ve seen him in the snow, at Red Rocks.
Zach Bryan did have a couple more appearances on the calendar before the end of 2023, but his show at Red Rocks Thursday night was billed as the grand finale to his current American Heartbreak tour, which Bryan has also hinted may be his last full-blown tour, at least for a good while. But it almost didn’t happen at all. The day before the temperature had been in the 70s. But on Thursday, temperatures fell to the 20s in the mile high climate, and snow began to dump from the sky.
Seeing the forecast and conditions, the Parks Service that has jurisdiction over Red Rocks tried to cancel the show. Zach Bryan would have none of it though, and a compromise was struck to move the start time back and shorten the show, which meant the openers had to be 86’d. Even amid these conditions, the show was still sold out, every seat was filled, and scalpers were still fetching three figures for tickets moments before the start time. The conditions didn’t dampen the show. It made it that much more memorable. Zach Bryan even bought hot chocolate and hand warmers for the crowd.
Openers Jonathan Peyton and Charles Wesley Godwin were the ones who got the short end of the stick, but Zach Bryan brought them both out at the beginning of his set to sing John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” backed by Bryan’s band to the delight of the frigid crowd. Godwin also came back out later for his duet with Zach Bryan, “Jamie.”
The weather made Zach’s rendition of songs like “Snow” and “November Air” that much more appropriate and meaningful, as the whole Red Rocks complex was socked in via fog, making the lights and the moments that much more magical. The show ended with a rousing, singalong version of “Revival” at about 9:45 PM, with Zach making the crowd promise to be safe on their way back home. Zach actually paid for a rental car for a group that had traveled all the way from Wisconsin and had hit a deer on their way there.
Zach Bryan headlined the Greenville Country Music Fest on Saturday, November 5th, and is also playing a Veteran’s Day celebration in San Diego on November 11th before calling it quits for 2022 after an exhaustive year of touring. But perhaps no moment, no set will be more fondly recalled than when the snow fell in Colorado.

I was there, I don’t think it’ll be an experience anyone will ever forget. I was at the planters right by row 24, just a couple rows up from the railing in the pic there. Trig, if you want some videos, let me know. Just like the Turnpike shows, people flew from all around the country just to see this show.
Also, my buddy was at the Greenville show last night and it was pouring down rain all day. Say what you want about his music, the dude always puts on a show for his fans and will play through anything.

Wow! How many times do you ever see artists playing in the snow? Looks great and memorable!
November 6, 2022 @ 11:27 am
I was wondering how comfortable it was for them. As a guitar player, I don’t think I could play if my hands were exposed in the snow for more than a few minutes. I guess they’re not shredding solos or anything but it’s still got to be tough.
November 15, 2022 @ 5:32 am
They were talkin about how they couldn’t feel their hands. Zach apologized at least 5 times if in advance for if he messed up (he never did)
November 6, 2022 @ 11:13 am
I forgot that John Denver helped Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert write the bridge to Country Roads. It’s an interesting story for a song. Also, if anyone here is going on a trip to Japan I urge you to learn that song. I played a country music show there in 2004 and all six of the Japanese bands played it. As far as this show goes, playing in the snow sounds tough on the hands and tough on the tuning!

In Ireland, it’s the last song of the night…whether it’s a live band or a DJ.
Don’t love the “Country Roads/STOMP STOMP” score, but it is a great vibe
November 7, 2022 @ 7:10 am
Fun fact. Bill Danoff is from Massachusetts, and when he first started writing the song it was about Massachusetts not West Virginia (same number of syllables). Apparently the geography isn’t quite right either. The Shenandoah River and the Blue Ridge Mountains are mostly located outside of West Virginia. Only a small portion of the Eastern Panhandle really fits the song. It seems like he picked West Virginia over Virginia because of the number of syllables.

I can verify that it has snowed at least twice in the last decade or so of the empty bottle’s “music frozen dancing” outdoor Chicago festival. Even the move from January to March didn’t help much with the snow or cold. Twenty degrees would have been welcome, but lots of chili and beer were sold anyway.

I think Trig likes Zach Bryan. I sure wish I did. I remember when I was younger, everyone loved Dave Matthews. I just couldn’t get into it and I felt like I should because it seemed like there was some magic there. Perhaps I need one quintessential tune to listen to five times in one day and maybe it sticks.
The music backing him just seems like it is there just to back him. That often leads to a lack of lasting power for me.
November 6, 2022 @ 3:06 pm
It really does come down to why you like music.
If you think songs are poetry set to a tune, Bryan’s fucking incredible.
If you think music and lyrics are co-equal partners in creating a great song, he’ll be found lacking.
And neither perspective is wrong!!!
November 6, 2022 @ 4:27 pm
The days when Dave Matthews was everywhere were absolutely awful. I tried listening to ZB, and my two gripes are: I can’t understand what he is singing because my hearing is not great. This is why I like singers like Jimmie Rodgers and Jimmy Dale Gilmore. Also it is definitely not country. I just don’t see the guy getting really good at guitar or learning other instruments. Nothing wrong with staying a basic musician, a lot of guys are just strummers, but it helps with coming up with strong melodies. I would definitely give his albums more chances but no fracking way would I spend money to see the show live.
November 8, 2022 @ 5:38 pm
Mr. Ian, I don’t know your age but I suspect seeing him live would be miserable to you as you stated. I am 49 and barely heard of him while once in a while hearing him on satellite radio Outlaw channel. I thought he was ok. Then I saw him live at Under The Big Sky. Holy crap. I was a believer. Dude was the best act of any I watched the three days. Cody Jinks played later that night and said it best. Congratulations to Zach Bryan on stealing the festival. Bryan played at five in the afternoon, and the place was packed. I was surrounded by a bunch of twenty-somethings and they knew every single word to every song. It was an amazing thing to witness. Don’t go see him live. You would hate it.
November 10, 2022 @ 8:32 am
While Zach Bryan was great it was Turnpike Troubadours that stole that show in my opinion. I know a ton of people I talked to missed Friday because they only bought the 2-day tickets due to work and were all disappointed to have missed Turnpike.
November 7, 2022 @ 10:50 am
Music preference is subjective. I went thru a big Dave Matthews band phase. I would consider these three to be quintessential tunes: Crush, #41, Corez the Killer – With Warren Haynes. There are one of very few popular bands who have many hits not in 4/4 time signature.
I never liked Mumford and Sons but I knew a lot of people who did. It’s subjective.
November 8, 2022 @ 6:47 am
He is pretty amateurish. An artist/band that should be playing in a bar but blew up and is headlining festivals. I was at the Greenville show ready to have my mind changed but alas, it was not. He played with his guitar out of tune for most of the night and clearly he and the band are very green. I understand he resonates with the crowd, that’s not in question. I can only liken the reaction to that if a teen idol appearance – tons of young girls screaming just waiting for him to pick them out of a crowd and sweep them off their feet. To be fair, he was better than “ERNEST” but that’s like saying someone is a better human being than Pol Pot. I respect Zach for being authentic but that’s where it ends.
God bless Zach and his fans, but even after seeing him live it remains a resounding “no” for me.
January 3, 2023 @ 11:41 pm
When I saw him live I was blown away by his fiddler. So I definitely did not get that sense, that the music only there to back him up. Having said that, he is a solo artist so this confuses me as a criticism.
November 6, 2022 @ 3:26 pm
There’s a ski resort by me in buffalo that has a heated outdoor stage. Realization down the road is to have a full winter concert at some point to go along with skiing in the middle of winter.
I’ve caught a few of these videos from the show. It looked awesome.
November 6, 2022 @ 3:35 pm
Very beautiful pictures Kevin!
November 6, 2022 @ 6:52 pm
I went to Neil Young acoustic. Him, his guitar, harmonica, piano at Red Rocks back in about mid 90’s but was end of September and got really cold and a bit of rain.Clouds came in just down to the stage you could barely see Neil. It was a very memorable concert as well.
November 7, 2022 @ 10:51 am
If I could barely see or hear Neil Young that’s when I would enjoy him most. Even though I like CSN
November 6, 2022 @ 7:30 pm
Feeling a bit salty at the notion of Godwin opening for Bryan. Boy, Godwin towers over ZB in my opinion.
November 7, 2022 @ 10:01 am
I’m always confused by comments along these lines, haha.
Like, beyond the fact that Bryan is well aware of Godwin being quite a bit ahead of him musically (and constantly shouts it out!), anyone who supports good music should be celebrating like hell that a massive, massive act like Bryan is using his platform to share Godwin’s music with more people.
Like, instead of complaining about Bryan putting CWG on-stage in arenas full of Bryan’s devoted fans, we should be annoyed that Wallen’s last openers were HARDY and Larry Fleet.
Combs has Cleto, Lainey, and Brent Cobb opening for him this year.
November 7, 2022 @ 10:13 am
Totally fair points, and I agree. That was just a silly way for me to say Godwin>Bryan.
November 7, 2022 @ 3:38 pm
Don’t get too hung up, there’s a ton of mutual respect there.
ZB has a CWG tattoo.
November 7, 2022 @ 7:08 am
Impressive- not a prima donna for sure… I have a hard time playing, hell, just being outside when the temps get cold… and I’m not a fan of his music, but I am a fan of his actions.
November 7, 2022 @ 11:10 am
I like Zach’s voice. It’s hard to hate on a guy who is wildly successful and is writing from his heart without being tainted or influenced by the country music kingmakers. However I just can’t handle listening to too much of his music though because his lyrical style turns me off. His songs are wordy and they kinda force you to listen closer but when I do It’s obvious that he has a teenager-early 20 something mindset.
November 8, 2022 @ 10:11 am
In fairness…pretty much all of his output was written and recorded between the ages of 21 and 25, haha!
Not to mention that he was 23 when lockdown hit.
Dude’s core appeal is “Catchy, lyric-driven, and authentic songs about being in your early 20s.”
Definitely not for everyone…but it’s not like he’s Luke Bryan, either.
Question is whether he can pull off the transition to writing songs about being a 30-something better than a guy like WCG did (love William, but he hasn’t matched Ringling Road which came out when he was 28).
November 8, 2022 @ 12:15 pm
funny that the Eagles wrote Desperado and Take it easy in their early 20’s.
November 8, 2022 @ 1:11 pm
A) I adore Take it Easy, but I’d hardly cite it as some paragon of lyrical maturity, in some asinine dick, I mean song, measuring contest, haha.
B) Bryan was 21/22 when he wrote Letting Someone Go, and 24/25 when he wrote Billy Stay.
November 8, 2022 @ 1:21 pm
More importantly than any of that, though…Bryan isn’t trying for any sort of “Old Soul” Colter Wall bullshit, haha!
Like, it’s totally valid that “Heart on your sleeve lyrics about being 20-something” isn’t your jam, haha…but “The songs this guy in his early-20s writes from the perspective of people in their early-20s clearly have the mindset of someone in their early-20s” is a breathtakingly silly line of critique, haha.
November 9, 2022 @ 12:41 pm
The Eagles didn’t write Take It East. Jackson Browne did.
November 9, 2022 @ 12:43 pm
Easy*
November 9, 2022 @ 6:10 pm
You’re right. I forgot that.
November 8, 2022 @ 2:23 am
While I don’t see Bryan as the lyrical genius others do, I respect his work ethic and his desire to entertain fans in lousy weather.
That said, is the stage covered, or were the musicians getting snowed on, too? Because moisture and electricity don’t mix. I’m sure the venue has safety people watching over such things.
November 8, 2022 @ 7:11 pm
The stage is covered. Ive been there in pouring rain, to the point where I couldn’t be more soaked if I jumped in a pool, but I don’t see it being enclosed enough to protect the musicians from the snow, which was likely blowing from every direction down in that rock formation.
January 3, 2023 @ 11:52 pm
I am sure it has changed over the years, but one of the iconic things about U2’s Under A Blood Red Sky concert video there is that Bono is soaking wet in the rain and singing. I suspect it depends on how far back you are although of course they may have extended the roof since the 80s LOL. And I agree, snow rarely falls vertically.
January 3, 2023 @ 11:45 pm
Red Rocks is my number one bucket list venue. And as someone who watched U2’s Under A Blood Red Sky (sorry not country LOL) more times than I can count growing up, I think seeing an artist at that venue must be all the more magical in crazy weather with a great band and engaged crowd (that show was in the rain). I saw Lord Huron in the rain this past summer and it was amazing–and yeah the openers got the short end of the stick.
Re Zach Bryan I saw him on this tour and aside from the venue being frankly oversold and stuffed to the gills it was amazing. So glad his new live album (shout out to the diss to Ticketmaster!) has his closer Revivial on it. That song was freaking amazing live, far outpaces the studio.
