Iron Hills Music Festival Announces Impressive Inaugural Lineup

You might be surprised to learn that Birmingham, Alabama right in the heart of the country music homeland does not have an annual country music festival. Well it does now. It’s called the Iron Hills Music Festival, and the folks putting it on clearly have good taste in country, from the independent, to legends, to some of the better names in the mainstream.
The Iron Hills Music Festival has announced its inaugural lineup for October 11th and 12th, happening at the historic Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark in downtown Birmingham.
The two-stage festival features The Turnpike Troubadours, Ryan Bingham and the Texas Gentlemen, Midland, Travis Tritt, Chase Rice, and Jo Dee Messina as the top-line headliners, with an undercard that also includes the fast-rising Mountain Grass Unit, American Aquarium, Kashus Culpepper, Channing Wilson, and more.
Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark is a 15-acre retired iron plant first founded in 1887. Birmingham, Alabama, is also proudly referred to as “The Steel City,” and was once an iron ore mecca, noteworthy for being one of the only geological sites on earth where the four central elements in iron can all be found. The location has hosted big music concerts in the past.
“The current climate of the music festival experience tells us that the fans expectations are at the highest level,” Co-founders Johnny Grimes and Chad Johnson say. “Fans want what they pay for. Every principal involved in this event started out as a music fan long before we were the ones producing the events. How do we extend beyond what money can buy and produce, not just a concert or a festival, but a world-class experience that will provide memories that last a lifetime? We welcomed the idea of such a challenge.”

I miss City Stages so badly. We’ve had several music festivals here in the Birmingham area over the years and they always seem to fizzle out over time. Imagine my excitement last week when I saw this announced and that Turnpike was a headliner. My only hesitation is that single day tickets aren’t available and may not be. Still glad to have this available to our community, though.

I went to City Stages many moons ago. IMO the organizers could’ve made more of a mark by tapping some seriously good ‘localized’ talent which draws out the familiar. I’m sure they could’ve had Early James, Dexateens, DBT’s/Hood/Cooley, Bandito’s, Taylor Hunnicutt, Lee Bains & the Glory Fires, some form of Brother Cane, or Katie Crutchfield. Birmingham has always supported its own well.

We have always supported our locals and it could be a great festival now. Just too bad the organizers were wasting money and ended up not being able to pay acts toward the end of it’s life.

American Aquarium is way too far down on the lineup.
