Jamey Johnson Reveals New Tour with a Very Meaningful Name

Jamey Johnson has just announced the dates for “The Last Honky Tonk Tour” kicking off on June 4th. The 36-date headlining tour will go all across the United States, with more dates to be added in the future. It comes on the back of Johnson releasing his long-anticipated new record Midnight Gasoline in 2024.
But this isn’t just some regular Jamey Johnson tour. The name carries a lot of significance, and for a host of reasons.
The tour name was coined in tribute to Wayne Mills, the country artist who was murdered on November 23rd, 2013, and who was close friends with Johnson. The title track from the last album Wayne Mills released was called “The Last Honky Tonk.” The song also happened to feature guitar player Jason “Rowdy” Cope on it, also known as one of the founders of the Southern rock group The Steel Woods. Cope passed away tragically himself in January of 2021 due to complications from diabetes.
Now in a full circle moment, Wayne Mills’ son Jack has become a guitar player after being mentored for many years by Jason “Rowdy” Cope. In many respects, Jack lost two fathers in a tragic fashion, but Jamey Johnson and other members of the country community have continued to step up and support Jack. Saving Country Music profiled Jack Mills late last year.
Along with the upcoming tour, Jamey Johnson is also readying the release of his own version of the Wayne Mills song “The Last Honky Tonk” produced by Buddy Cannon. And in yet another full circle moment, Jack Mills plays on the track.
“When Wayne and Rowdy got together and did that record, that song made it on my radar,” Johnson says. “Back then, I played that song several times with Wayne. We would do it at shows. So, it is one I haven’t done in a while. And now Wayne’s son, Jack, is a badass guitar player. He says he learned it all from Rowdy. I don’t doubt that at all. Jack really is something else! I thought, ‘Man, his dad would be proud. Let’s break that song out and get Jack to play guitar on it.’ I am proud to have him playing on it.”
“The tour will be a lot of fun,” Johnson continues. “It’s a chance for us to hang out every night, where we get to walk onstage and show off what we’ve learned over the past 20 years. This is my 20th year on the road, not counting the road gigs I did in the 10 years before that. I thought that the name sounded pretty good as a tour name – ‘The Last Honky Tonk Tour.’”

Jamey’s shows are like no other. I assume there’s ten songs he’s going to play each night and everything else is an audible because watching the band try to figure out what chords he’s strumming so they can jump in and join him is truly amazing. Last time I saw him he says “now we’re gonna play an old George Straight song…” and you could see the looks on the band members faces going – ok I wonder which one? He and his band put on one helluva show.

He has a non-phony voice.

The pic of the front of the bar in the tour graphic he’s using is our world famous Carol’s Pub here in Chicago, one of the original dive bars. Everybody who’s anybody in independent Country has played there. Ironically, I don’t see a date for us on this tour.
