Joshua Ray Walker Shares Great News About Cancer Diagnosis

A miracle is what Dallas, TX-based singer/songwriter Joshua Ray Walker and his fans were hoping for. What they received wasn’t exactly a miracle. It was more like a misdiagnosis. But no matter what you call it, Joshua Ray Walker is currently Cancer free, and we’ll take it.

Joshua Ray Walker was diagnosed with colon Cancer at the end of 2023, and after colon surgery, entered a six-month chemotherapy treatment with the hope it would result in a full recovery. But at a show at the legendary Kessler Theater in Dallas on September 9th, Walker announced that after finishing chemo and receiving his followup tests, it appeared that the Cancer had moved to his lungs, and he expected to be re-diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer.

At the time, Joshua Ray Walker said he wasn’t going to share the prospects the doctors were giving to him because it seemed too defeatist. But needless to say, it didn’t look good. Walker then had a biopsy on his lungs ahead of expecting to start aggressive radiation treatment to try and save his life. Luckily, no radiation will be necessary.

“I’ve been anxious to update you, but I wanted to wait until I was off pain meds and all the most recent scans, tests, and lab results had come back. I’m so excited to share with you that my pre-surgery diagnosis was incorrect, I’ve beat the odds and to everyone’s complete surprise, my lungs are cancer free!” Joshua Ray Walker said on Friday (10-25) afternoon.

He continues, “As far as my doctors can tell, there is no discernible amount of cancer anywhere in my body at the moment! I am ecstatic, and I couldn’t have done it without y’all’s love and support. I won’t be in remission for another 5 years, and I will have frequent tests and scans done during that time, but for now, my life is not in imminent danger. That’s a crazy thing to say considering the odds I was told I was up against a little over a month ago.”

Joshua Ray Walker won the Saving Country Music Song of the Year for “Voices” in 2020, and those that know his work consider him one of the greatest songwriters of this generation. When it comes to modern-day vocalists—including ones who can perfect the classic country moan yodel—Walker may have nearly all of them beat as well.

Walker commenced his career with a trilogy of albums Wish You Were Here (2019), Glad You Made It (2020), and See You Next Time (2021). After his Cancer diagnosis and the fear his opportunities to record might be fleeting, he’s been in the studio recording new material. But luckily, Walker will now hopefully have many more years of contributing songs to the world.

“My main goal now is to be the healthiest version of myself possible, and that would be an impossible pursuit if not for your help conquering the insurmountable financial situation I found myself in,” Walker says to his fans. “I’m so excited to be alive, I’m excited to share this incredible news with you, and I’m excited to make the most of this opportunity. I love y’all so much, thank you for loving me back.”
