Lainey Wilson Earns Deserved #1 for ‘Things a Man Oughta Know’
There’s little if any justice in the world. And there’s even less on mainstream country radio. But every once in a while, they get it right. Even if you chalk it up to a broken clock being right twice a day, or a blind squirrel finding a nut every once in a while, it’s been a long time since we’ve felt the need celebrate someone getting to #1 on country radio. But for Lainey Wilson and “Things a Man Oughta Know,” it’s certainly cause to bust out the confetti.
The understated, well-written, and rootsy song with mandolin prominently featured might not be what you think of when you think of a modern day country hit. And certainly, many of the songs that constitute radio “hits” these days are little more than a record label’s favored child being shepherded to the front of the class through a mostly rigged system. Just ask Bobby Bones.
But with her strong Southern accent that luckily wasn’t dialed back by some busybody producer, and just enough of a list-like element at the start to sound like something radio would warm to, “Things a Man Oughta Know” officially makes it to #1 this week, and it’s a big moment for the bona fide redneck warrior princess Lainey Wilson as she continues to present a bright spot and more country-sounding alternative in the mainstream.
Written by Wilson with Jason Nix and Jonathan Singleton, like many radio singles these days—especially from new artists—it took over a year for “Things a Man Oughta Know” to mature. It was first released on August 24th, 2020. But after receiving iHeartRadio’s “On The Verge” treatment, it found a strong audience, also hitting #4 on the more consumer-based Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and being Certified Gold by the RIAA on August 9th. That means there’s real traction behind Lainey and this song beyond radio.
The implications here are much bigger than radio. Lainey Wilson is one of these artists that helping to symbolize a return to country’s roots in the mainstream, evidenced by her well-received new record Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin’. She really deserved a New Artist of the Year nomination from the CMA for 2021. But perhaps with a #1 under her belt now, they’ll consider her next year.
Originally from the small town of Baskin, Louisiana (pop. 300), and born and raised on Hank Williams, Buck Owens, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Lainey Wilson is working to upset the pecking order in the world of country pop by pushing the bros aside. That’s how she ended up on the main imprint of Broken Bow Records right beside bro dudes like Jason Aldean, Dustin Lynch, and Chase Rice, as well as on the mostly male-dominated soundtrack of the Paramount TV Series Yellowstone.
Hopefully the #1 for “Things a Man Oughta Know” is the first of many for Lainey Wilson.

….”But with her strong Southern accent that luckily wasn’t dialed back by some busybody producer,”….
Seriously Trigglonius, when is this ever done? It seems like the norm is for fake accents to be encouraged, not for real accents to be dialed back. The fake accents in modern Country are what is used to qualify it as Country.
Agree with you on this lady though. She’s a great singer, but her music is as pop as I can tolerate C(c)ountry music being. If her songs get any less country, she’ll lose me.

Honky, I’m surprised you would even listen to this. I went and listened to this whole album because I’ve been reading her praise all over this site and now you say it’s country enough for you to tolerate so I thought I’d give it a chance. Outside of Things A Man Oughta Know, and the last 2 songs I thought it was awful. It’s like the same things I’ve heard a hundred times before, and if you took away the accent, I’m not sure what’s country about it at all. I really don’t get all the love around here other than for this song and the other 2 I mentioned.

Rusty,
I didn’t say I love the songs. I said she’s a great singer, and the songs are the most pop that I can tolerate. That doesn’t mean that I like the songs, or want to hear them; it just means that if this was the worst of the worst, that would be a world I could deal with.
Does that make sense? I tried to explain myself better.

Pretty cool that her and her roommates are all getting noticed (at varying degrees) around the same time. Ashland opened Wrestlemania and other big shows and Kasey opened for Jamey Johnson and Whiskey Myers this summer

I think most everyone on here knows I’m ecstatically happy for Lainey and her song going #1. I kind of poo pooed the production on the album upon first listen but I could hear the great songs through it all especially this single. I’ve grown to love the album, it’s in my top 5 of the year. Seeing her play a tiny small in tent stage at a neighborhood festival in Kirkland, IL earlier this year and bringing it like a star just solidified that she deserves this and much more to come.

Good song and well deserved! Speaking of new female artists, have you checked out Hannah Dashers new ep trigger? Pretty traditional sound.

I’m with King in that I hope she does not veer towards pop. This is a great song by a great singer. Let’s hope her future output will “toe-the-line” and be country, even more country. Now, I know it isn’t fair to compare, but for me if I had to choose between her and Carley Pierce based on vocals, I would choose Lainey.
Glad we do not have to choose. We have room for both IF, IF, IF they keep it country going forward.

Seemingly all the good female country singers eventually go full pop

Or they go “Americana”, aka reverb rock. One of my favorite female country artists Brit Taylor just announced Sturgel Simpson will produce her next album. Can’t help but think to myself that her cool 90s country sound is about to turn into some fuzzed out rock. Hope I’m wrong, but doubt it.

One of the best written songs I’ve heard in ages – both lyrically as well as musically … The “…list-like element at the start…” is more classic/old school country than it is current “bro-rap-country” and emphasizes WHAT she’s trying to say – her point – rather than being just what she wants to reference – to score points…

I started listening to Lainey back in 2016 when Frank Foster announced he was going to help her record her first album and release it on his own label. I thought back then she has a good mix of country with enough radio listenability to be successful, and a great voice. However even after releasing a EP a few years later, she never took off. I honestly didn’t think Lainey would ever really break out after her career seemed to stall for a while. She moved to Nashville and was even doing jingles for tv commercials for awhile. I’m very happy for her that she has been able to regain steam and have such a successful new album and a number 1 song. I hope it continues.

Lainey is #1, and the song she knocked out of #1 was a Thomas Rhett song that was actually not terrible and surprisingly country.
Slowly but surely, pop country is improving, “Fancy Like” notwithstanding.
