Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman Plays Unreleased Song on ‘The Hook’

The pilot episode of a new songwriter showcase called The Hook was shot on September 29th at Eastside Bowl in Nashville. The Hook looks to discover and expose undiscovered songs and songwriters by allowing anyone to come up on stage and perform a song in front of an audience, a panel of judges, and a full video production crew.

Along with searching for talent, The Hook also looks to spotlight more established songwriters, and songwriting legends. It happened to be that for the pilot episode, the legendary frontman for Leftover Salmon, Vince Herman, showed up to start the show off, and then stuck around for the whole show as a panelist to add his songwriting insight and signature humor to the program.

In the spirit of The Hook, Herman started the show off by performing an unreleased song he co-wrote with Bryan Simpson called “St. Somebody.” Though you might think of Leftover Salmon more as a bluegrass-rooted jam band with Cajun tendencies (or what they call “Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass”), frontmen Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman are highly revered as singer/songwriters in their own right, and Vince proves why with “St. Somebody.”

Originally formed in 1989 in Colorado, Vince Herman and Leftover Salmon are celebrating their 35th Anniversary in 2025. They released their latest album Let’s Party About It in early May featuring guests like Del McCoury, Sam Bush, and fiddle maestro Jason Carter.

Over the coming days and weeks, there will be more performance videos and other highlights from The Hook’s pilot taping released, with the full episode coming soon.
