Marty Stuart Details Plans for Potential New TV Show
The work that Marty Stuart did on The Marty Stuart Show that aired original episodes between 2008 and 2014 on RFD-TV has withstood the test of time, evidenced by the continued popularity of the show in reruns. Some 156 original shows aired from the series which featured Stuart and his backing band The Fabulous Superlatives and Eddie Stubbs as announcer, along with many special guests over the years, including country legends that would go on to pass away, marking The Marty Stuart Show as one of their final appearances.
“The mission statement there was to put our arms around the culture of traditional country music inside the walls of Nashville before it completely disappeared off the edge of planet Earth. And we accomplished that,” Stuart said in 2017. “At the end of the 156 episodes and six or seven seasons, you know what? Mission accomplished. Let’s move on … That particular show is in the books now. It’s in history books.”
Nonetheless, country fans have been salivating at the prospects of Marty Stuart returning to television in some capacity. He said after closing the door on the Marty Stuart Show‘s return, “I love TV, and I think there’s another television show in development, probably for another network. But we are absolutely going to go back to the TV cameras in the next couple years, I think.”
Now we have more details on what exactly Marty Stuart has in the works, and it will be tied into his Congress of Country Music in Philadelphia, Mississippi, which will be opening its first phase, The Ellis Theater, on December 8th.
“I see it as 30-minute episodes, revolving around going out to obtain an artifact, rescuing it and bringing it back,” Stuart tells Billboard. “Every show will start in the warehouse in Philadelphia, Miss., where everything is staged right now. You get the story behind the artifact and it’s a treasure hunt. If there are musical instruments involved, we try to bring the past and present together.”
The original impetus for Marty Stuart’s Congress of Country Music was to give a permanent home to the some 20,000 country music artifacts Stuart has amassed over his career. If the show comes into full production, it will dovetail into what Marty Stuart is doing in his hometown. The pilot episode for the potential series is currently being edited, with the hopes of finding a home for the full production eventually.
“For instance, the lyrics to [Hank Williams, Sr.’s] ‘I Saw the Light’ or ‘Cold, Cold Heart,’ it makes a lot of sense for one of his grandkids to sit there and sing them,” says Stuart. “It’s showing how artifacts are relevant in the hands of somebody current. We take for granted that everybody knows who Hank Williams is, but there’s a whole new generation that needs to be educated. It’s a way to bring past, present, and future, entertaining and educating at the same time.”
Marty Stuart has had a busy week. On Tuesday, November 22nd, he was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville along with his backing band The Fabulous Superlatives of “Cousin” Kenny Vaughan, “Handsome” Harry Stinson, Chris Scruggs, and Mick Conley. Then on this week’s Friday Night Grand Ole Opry (11-26), Marty Stuart will be celebrating his 30th Anniversary as a member.
Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives also just released a new song called “Country Star” ahead of a new album to be announced soon.

WOW. this is some of the most exciting news in a while.
the last 10ish years have brought some great youtube country music performance channels. I think it started with stuff like Live And Heavy which I think did the Pickathon clips, Jam In The Van, the WV Radio Live From Red Barn stuff, WesternAF and GemsOnVHS, and streams from live venues like Dale and Celine Watson’s Hernandos Hideaway TV. The pandemic also brought things like the west coast Ameripolitan series StellarJax Christopher Burkhardt’s Eclectic American Roots series of mini-documentaries mixed with performances by the presenters.
But I can’t think of anything that’s like the old-timey variety show format that Marty’s show did .so well. The Eclectic

oops forgot about Texas Music Scene, tha’ts one of the best of these. The closest thing to it is the Eclectic American Roots series, but neither of them is the same thing as the Opry-style old timey variety shows.

Some of the RFD-TV shows like the Presley’s from Branson and the Merlin Gene Show feature comedy bits between songs.

Hey Marty that’s some good news my man. I used to live in Bristol. Yeah down there near the old valleydale plant used to be there. Like to get you back down here at the Paramount. You’re absolutely my favorite entertainer that’s both country and anything else. Looking forward to your TV show bud. Don’t forget us down here in Virginia. May you and your band have a wonderful Thanksgiving and that Christmas brings you much cheer and the coming year will be fruitful for you. Can’t wait to see you buddy!

I watch the Marty Stewart Show from the early 2000’s – 2012 on RDF. Would love to see another show put together. It would be a country classic.

So a country version of American Pickers meets American Restoration meets Hollywood Hometown (Think Duck Dynasty). I just hope that this doesn’t become a Grandpa Hunt show where the merchandise that needs to be rescued is hidden ahead of time and/or there is contrived drama comedy like Cecile from Paisleys Road Tour holding up the old 97 that’s powered by the Hooterville cannonball locomotive when Marty is trying to get Boxcar Willies guitar back home.

I’ve always wanted more Marty Stuart Show episodes. This sounds cool, and I’m sure I’d check it out, although may be a little disappointed if he’s not incorporating live music in the show. I can watch Marty and Cousin Kenny shred all day long. Plus Chris Scruggs is a great musician. I don’t recall if Chris was in the older episodes or if the show ended before he replaced the apostle Paul. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve even watched the reruns.

Scruggs was, indeed, in some of the later Marty Stuart shows on RFD TV, but, at that time, Paul was still part of the band, and, accordingly, Scruggs was not Paul’s replacement at that time.

Yes, he appeared on there a couple of times as a performer, with Chuck Mead from the BR-549 days, and with Kayton Roberts playing pedaless steel. I also seem to recall him on there as an auxiliary member of Marty’s band a few times, but don’t quote me on that.

I still miss Marty Stuart’s American Odyssey radio show on XM. Was one of the best radio series ever produced. Every episode was so engaging and filled so much knowledge and great music.

Interesting seems like something Is going on with the old Rfd tv show. You have this plus Larry country dinner abruptly being canceled a few weeks back. Also Dailey and Vincent hinted at a new opportunity at a concert I saw a few week back.

Sad to hear about Larry’s Country Diner. It could be cheesy at times for sure, but there were also a lot of great discoveries through that show. That was the first place I ever saw The Church Sisters and Mo Pitney.

I’m not sure on the details behind why from what I gathered from the FB page it wasn’t expected. They aired 2 part shows on Nov 10/17 a tribute type show. I want to say they also hinted at something new in the works, but would have to go back to double check that.

Where is a link to the cancellation of Larry’s Country Diner? I can find nothing about that except for your post.

It appears they’re going to still be broadcasting episodes on RFD-TV, but just not producing new ones, sort of like what happened with The Marty Stuart Show, which still airs as well. I hadn’t seen anything about this either and there are no formal announcements about it. But it appears to be true. I’m still digging and might have something on it when I get all the info together.

The whole thing and how the announced was a bit odd and it wasn’t super clear when they talked about it.

RFD-TV needs to pull its head out of its butt and get serious about setting up a good streaming service. The one they have is very lacking.
Also, there seems to have been a decline in country music programming recently. They risks becoming a loveable relic if they do not snap out of it.

Agreed. Circle Network’s got to be hurting their music/variety programming.

I think the idea for this show is interesting. But I think Marty Stuart should start back up his original music show. It’s the only music show that got things right…paying homage to the legends of country music. There’s still legends out there that need to be put front and center on television. I think RFD-TV and the Circle Network are getting it right. Years ago we had TNN but they completely changed to a tv rerun, movie, and sports channel. CMT also went the same way. Other music channels (MTV & VH1) stood the test of time and didn’t change and I wonder why the country music channels lost all the music programs?!?!?!? I just don’t get it. Another channel that I was interested in but could never get as much as I requested it on our cable lineup was Willie Nelson Outlaw Music Channel. They played true country music….The Porter Wagoner Show, The Wilburn Brothers Show, The Kitty Wells Johnny Wright Family Show, Country Carnival, Pop Goes The Country, and many other classic shows. Willie really got it right!!!!!! But now that channels gone. Us traditionalists need to step up and voice our opinions on what we want to see and hear. If we don’t…..real country music will be lost.

What he should do is bring back the ‘Marty Stuart Show’ like it was, and the do a segment each show on one of the museum pieces and how it was gotten or discovered, he would be covering all bases that way!

We should all be proud of the country music legends that are gone on and the ones that are still with us. Today’s country is not country. They just stole the name.

I truly miss Dailey and Vincent. First they were on RFD and then Circle, but now nowhere. As far as I know, they are not making new episodes.
As far as LCD, the end of it was confusing. My hubby would get annoyed with the commercials which totaled almost half the show, but we still watched. I imagined it is very expensive to make these shows, right, Gus ?

Circle really needs more original country content. I watch and enjoy the few shows they have but the rest is old movies and old reruns. Hopefully anything new that Marty does is on there, even if it is American Country Pickers.

Marty Stuart has the right ideas, just went to his show in the small town Pulteney, NY at “Point Of The Bluff Winery”, can’t say I followed him but now he has become our favorite artist.
He breaks the mold and his new album is fantastic. Can’t wait to visit his museum, and see
His new show. God Bless you for saving country music. ❤️
