Marty Stuart Releases New Song, Officially Opens the Ellis Theater

There is new music from Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives. I repeat, there is new music from Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives. Aside from a few covers Marty released during the pandemic, it’s been a cold and lonely 5-plus years since Marty Stuart has released new music, which came in the form of his last album Way Out West. Now he’s released his first song via his new record label Snakefarm Records, and just like on Way Out West, Marty is keeping it groovy. “Country Star” very much finds that 60s country rock West Coast vibe once again.
“There’s a lot of crazy imagery in this song,” Stuart says. “I’ve always loved songs like ‘Roll In My Sweet Baby’s Arms,’ ‘Long Journey Home,’ and ‘Salty Dog Blues.’ Those don’t really say much of anything but they feel good and they’re a perfect way to start any show. ‘Country Star’ qualifies as one of those songs. It’s lightly autobiographical and highly danceable and it has a twang factor that’s just exactly right.”
Though the song does not come with any accompanying information about a new album just yet, rest assured, that is in the works. In fact, while touring around Europe recently, Marty Stuart said, “I have three albums in the can – they’ll be out soon.” In August, it was announced that Stuart had signed to Snakefarm Records, which is a European-based label whose parent company is the Universal Music Group.
Marty Stuart is joined on the new song by his fabulous backing band, which consists of “Cousin” Kenny Vaughan on lead guitar, “Handsome” Harry Stinson on drums, and the amazing Chris Scruggs on bass.
Along with the new song, Marty Stuart is finally announcing the opening of the first piece of his long-awaited Congress of Country Music in his hometown of Philadelphia, Mississippi. On December 8th, the historic Ellis Theater that has been fully renovated will officially be re-opened to the public with a performance by Marty Stuart, His Fabulous Superlatives, as well as Connie Smith. Over the next few nights, there will also be shows by Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill and the Gaither Vocal Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, The North Mississippi Allstars, and Hardy. For more info, visit congressofcountrymusic.org.
Eventually the Ellis Theater will be the performance space for the Congress of Country Music complex where Marty will house his some 20,000 country music artifacts, along with an education center and other facilities.
Meanwhile, we’ll all be cranking the new song, and waiting impatiently for news on a new album.

Love Marty and the band. Way Out West has been on repeat for a long time now. Gonna be seeing him (if my fingers are fast enough) at a ~400 capacity venue in the spring

We just randomly ran a Chris Scruggs Appreciation Day on Reddit’s r/countrymusic this week and I dug through some old Marty Stuart Show episodes on YouTube. MAN what a phenomenal thing he did, just with that show (not to mention everything else Marty’s done with his talents)

Cool. You mentioned Otis Gibbs in another thread. Some of his best interviews are with Kenny Vaughn. Great player. Interesting cat.

So, I take it that Songs I Sing In The Dark is pretty much dead, then? I was hoping for a full release to materialize after Marty announced his new label partnership.

Well, if Marty Stuart says he has three albums ready to release, one could be “Songs I Sing in the Dark.” The other could be his surf guitar project. We’ll just have to see.

We recently saw Marty and band in Western, Mass and were blown away by their musicianship. Why they are not more widely known is a mystery to me. We will look forward to new shows and music in the coming years.

The radio station used to have a “pick it” or “kick it” segment nightly where they’d play a new song and people would call in to vote on its playability. This is a “pick it.”

” why they are not more widely known is a mystery to me.” Ugh….Eric, Marty Stuart is a Grand Ole Opry member, a member of The Country Music Hall of Fame, a Grammy winner, a platinum album seller and a living legend. He’s EXTREMELY well known in Country music. Need more context to understand your point. Maybe you are referring to the group of folks who have of recent swarmed to the camps of Zach Bryan and Billy Strings, but otherwise have no understanding or knowledge of actual COUNTRY music. Yeah, I can give you that, very few in that group have ever heard of Marty Stuart.

Kevin Smith,
How right you are!!

God, I love this band.

Really now, we are living in a time when an artist can reach superstar status without lots of radio airplay. Two prime examples: John Prine and Lucinda Williams.

I had tickets to see him at a theater very close to my house but it was cancelled, can’t wait to see him and definitely going to his museum. I would love if he did some kind of tribute to Clarence White next year for the 50th anniversary of his death. He truly uses that guitar as it should be. I would like to hear Billy Strings rip it on Clarence’s D28 that Tony Rice owned.

We were lucky enough to see Marty and the guys twice in England in the summer. We were blown away by their incredible talents and they were the best shows we’ve ever been to. Meeting Marty, Kenny Harry and Chris was such an honor and wow Marty has to be the nicest, coolest guy ever. Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives are welcome in England any time you can spare them.
He told us he has tree new records and was told March for release. I said oh that’s such a long wait and he said almost Apologetically ‘they are good records’ I told him that everything he does is amazing so we know they will be.

Linda. Do you know about The Ameripolitan Music Show (you can get it on Mixcloud, which is an internet radio app with individual DJs shows, kind of like podcasts but for music)? It’s a guy out of London who that’s absolutely impeccable taste in this kind of music. It sounds like you guys have quite a few good homegrown country artists over there too.
