Marty Stuart & The Steve Miller Band Announce Dual Tour

Reprising a touring concept that was first dreamed up in 2019 that seemed a little offbeat but worked very well according to attendees, Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives will be joining The Steve Miller Band out on tour in 2020. Comedian and musician Gary Mule Deer will also play a supporting role on the tour starting in Texas in June. Brian Wilson and Taj Mahal will also be special guests on certain dates, and songwriter/guitarist Matthew Curry will fill in at a few shows as well. See full itinerary below.
“Touring with Marty and the Superlatives is inspirational,” says Steve Miller. “This is undoubtedly one of the most talented touring combinations I’ve ever been involved in. We look forward to continuing working together to explore the roots of American Music. Adding the musical comedy of Gary Mule Deer to the show will be an unexpected treat for our fans. I’m delighted to be able to tour with these great artists and to bring the Steve Miller Band audience the best of the best.”
Marty Stuart has been busy of recent, re-releasing his magnum opus album The Pilgrim, which enjoyed its 20th Anniversary in 2019. Stuart also recently released a new companion book for the record, with numerous photos as well as written material chronicling the making of the album as well as other moments from his career, and other images from his archive as a photographer. It also includes a CD of the original record with bonus material.
“Touring with the Steve Miller Band has proved to be magical,” says Marty Stuart. “It is indeed an honor to go across the nation with Steve and the Steve Miller Band.”
The “Americana Tour” will include 40 total dates from June through September. Pay attention to the key below the dates, because lineups vary for many shows.

no Chicago date; hello, Ravinia.

A friend of a friend of mine saw them last year; she raved about Steve Miller and said a little something about “this Marty Stuart guy” she had never heard of. Kind of surprising because she is supposedly a big “Country music fan” and has seen Luke Bryant, FGL and Sam Hunt in concert several times. Was grinding my teeth a for a while after that…

Massive Marty Stuart fan. I thought that the Sweetheart of the Rodeo Tour was a great idea. Marty fit well playing Byrds.
Trying to understand the point on this one however. Sure Steve Miller is terrific , no doubt but the audiences are different. Maybe that’s the point? And Brian Wilson? Taj Mahal? I’d love to know who dreamed this one up and what they were thinking. Anybody know? it just seems a random pairing, at least to me.
I’ll tell you a perfect tour idea I’d get behind. Remember the PBS Ken Burns Country music Concert? They put Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart and Vince Gill onstage together and it was pure magic. Now put those three on a tour, that would be something.

I do not know how this tour goes exactly, but Steve is know for playing a lot more of an Americana type show when he is playing by himself and has taken the stage with Marty multiple times and went heavily toward the country/americana style. I am assuming with his full band, it takes probably takes on much more of a full Steve Miller Band type show, but I do not know that for a fact. Here is a clip of Steve and Marty together and I would guess there is a segment like this during their show where they play this type of music.

Taj Mahal and Brian Wilson are just making single appearances. Marty and Steve played this same package last year, and it apparently worked for enough people to where they feel compelled to do it again. I agree it’s a strange pairing, but if it puts Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives in front of more people, good. I’m glad Marty isn’t insisting he deserves headliners status and is just set on playing club shows. Opening for Eric Church, Chris Stapleton, and Steve Miller have created a lot more interest in his career because he BRINGS it. Meanwhile Marty continues to play smaller venues for the folks who want to see him there.

Well said Trigger.

I rarely say this about anyone with a bigger scarf collection than Zsa-Zsa Gabor, but Marty Stuart is the fucking MAN!

you’ve taken the words right out of my mouth kevin. not getting this at all but i’m not who matters. if tickets sell and folks enjoy either or both acts more power to em .

It does seem a little incongruous. We’re just getting Marty and the boys in Atlanta and that is fine by me. I saw Steve Miller a few times back in the day. Way back in the day. I’m good on that score.
We see a lot of live music. Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives is about the best show going.

Thrilled to see this show in Walla Walla WA in August. It will be epic. These two bands will musically be all over the map. Bring your chair, sit down and hang on tight!

One of many words to describe Marty Stuart is “gracious”. Always willing to deflect praise to others which emphasizes Trigger’s point about him not insisting on headliner status. Very good point.
I don’t know of a review that is negative about his and the Fab’s performances, especially to an audience that might not have heard him before. Thus, this continued tour with Steve Miler is a positive thing for exposure. Once a crowd is exposed to him and his band, they are always amazed by their musicianship.
I think Marty has continued to remain relevant due to his unique concert pairings among his other expansive contributions to the genre.
If there is a better ambassador and gatekeeper of country music, I do not know of them. Kudos to the mandolin maestro. He deserves many more accolades.
