Michael Shannon to Play George Jones in ‘George & Tammy’ Series
The limited series George & Tammy about the life and marriage of country legends Tammy Wynette and George Jones has found their person to portray The Possum. It had been previously announced that award-winning actress Jessica Chastain would be playing Tammy, and originally it was supposed to be Josh Brolin in the role of George. But apparently scheduling conflicts got in the way, so two-time Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon has stepped in.
“Josh Brolin is still co-producing with Andrew Lazar, but due to his prior commitments he couldn’t take on this acting role due to scheduling,” said Georgette Jones back in August in a Facebook post. Georgette is the only offspring from the marriage of George and Tammy. It is her 2013 book The Three of Us: Growing Up with Tammy and George that the script and story for the series is drawn from.
George Jones and Tammy Wynette were married for six years between 1969 and 1975, but had a professional country music duet career for much longer. The relationship was both passionate and tempestuous, and will certainly make for quality drama, so much so the creators decided to extend it into a multi-part series from the original idea of a feature film. Filming is set to take place in Wilmington, North Carolina, and should be commencing any day now, if it hasn’t already started.
The 47-year-old Michael Shannon from Lexington, Kentucky is also a musician and songwriter, which might help him in trying to resurrect the spirit of No Show Jones. Known for being a versatile actor in both dramas and comedies, Shannon was nominated in 2008 for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in his role in the movie Revolutionary Road, and in 2016 for Nocturnal Animals.
Also revealed by Georgette Jones recently is that the legendary T Bone Burnett will be handling much of the music for the film. It was T Bone’s work on soundtracks such as The Big Lebowski and O Brother Where Art Thou that put the producer on the map for many. T Bone was also the Executive Music Producer for the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line from 2005.
David Hutkin and Bob Yari of 101 Studios are also executive producers for the series with Josh Brolin. 101 is the same studio that is producing Paramount’s successful series Yellowstone. Abe Sylvia, who is best known for producing the popular Netflix series “Dead to Me” and Showtime series “Nurse Jackie,” is the creator of the series.
Spectrum Originals will air the series exclusively for nine months, and then it will be available later on Paramount and ViacomCBS for streaming. There is no official release date just yet.

He resembles him. He could also play Randy Travis–to me he looks more like him than the Opossum.

Sir Adam,
That is funny, I did the same thing. But, I have heard of Molly Shannon, although I am not sure why. Never heard of Michael.

Images of Jim Carrey from Me Myself and Irene along with him as Andy Kaufman always resemble George Jones to me.

T-Bone Burnett doing the soundtrack. No offense to T-Bone meant, but hes not the right guy. Its gonna probably be Marc Ribot on guitar and the usual cast of T-Bone go- tos. They were fine backing Plant and Krauss, but they dont strike me as a match for Jones music. What is needed isnt some artsy sounding hip band, but a hardcore honky-tonk lineup. Folks like Dale Watson or Chuck Mead could be a better fit. Just my thought, perhaps they prove me wrong. (And i hope they do) The original Jones Boys were the 3 Adams brothers on bass, drums, and guitar, with Sonny Curtis on pedal steel, Charley Justice on fiddle and occasionally Johnny Paycheck filling in on bass, guitar or pedal steel.

Trig, do you know if Michael Shannon will be singing, like Joaquin Phoenix did in Walk the Line, or if it will be Jones’s vocals over new music?

I haven’t seen anything on this specifically yet. I do find it encouraging that he’s a musician, so if they try to test that out even in a limited capacity, at least he knows how to hold a guitar and step up to the mic. Nobody will ever sound like The Possum, but singing a line here or there will add some realism to it if possible.

Does anyone know if filming has started? This is very well cast with Jessica Chastain and Micheal Shannon. I am really looking forward to seeing this limited series

Since it’s George and Tammy I’d expect it to be all or mostly duets so if he can do a passable imitation it could work. Jones’ voice is unmatchable but if Shannon can figure out a few of his notable techniques like the quick pitch changes and unique phrasing, he should do well enough. It helps that George usually let his duet partners lead. It might be harder to look like Jones singing. Watching old videos it looks like he’s got his jaw tense and almost clenched.
Does anyone know if Chastain can sing? Tammy Wynette wasn’t the greatest technical singer but her voice and accent were very distinctive. That could be hard to replicate so if they have to use Wynette’s vocals they might as well use Jones’ too.

Brolin is good, but Michael Shannon is an upgrade. Nobody does simmering emotion like that guy.
If you’ve never seen the movie Shotgun Stories from 2007, check it out. Completely overlooked:

Shotgun stories is a fantastic movie and was written and directed by Jeff Nichols (brother of Ben Nichols from Lucero).
Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon had husband/wife roles in Take Shelter ( also written and directed by Jeff Nichols). They are great as a pair, and the movie is amazing.

All you posters have it wrong. There is only one person that could possibly play George Jones. And that is Jim Carrey. He’s got the weasel eyes and mannerisms, similar height and build. Can you imagine Him crooning He Stopped Loving Her Today ??? He would be perfect. Everyone else except Randy Travis would be a poser

Michael Shannon is a really good actor. It was a much different genre, but I always thought he should have been the one to play Marcus Luttrell in Lone Survivor. Shannon is literally the same height and appearance and Marky Mark is almost a midget. I am sure Shannon will do great playing the possum.

So they have to get an ultra liberal to play George Jones. Typical.
I am surprised the didn’t get a black guy to play George Jones.

He’s an actor, not a politician. He should be judged on how he acts, not how he votes. And something tells me you’re using a loose interpretation of “ultra liberal.”

I could care less what it tells you. M Shannon is a liberal activist. He speaks against America and everything she stands for.

The vast majority of actors in Hollywood are liberal, ultra-liberal, left-wing, progressive, socialist, or communist. If you plan to bar all of them from portraying country music singers onscreen, or from acting in movies in general, we would be much the poorer for it. Let the performances speak for themselves and ignore their opinions on matters political.

Give it time and they will.
I don’t really care that shannon is a douchebag, the point is that he is in no way credible as George Jones. Just like that Brit who played Hank.

George Jones deserves a Hollywood biopic made about him…with a good part of it devoted to him and Tammy Wynette.

As I see it he is one of the best things that has or will ever happen to country music. Who might rival the Possum? Hank Williams Sr… perhaps.
So a movie exclusively about him would only be right.
