Miranda Lambert, Kacey Musgraves End Long Feud Via New Song

For years, rumors swirled about a a smoldering feud between Miranda Lambert and Kacey Musgraves, though there was never any hard and fast confirmations. Both women are from small town East Texas, with Musgraves hailing from Mineola, and Miranda from Lindale, which are only about 12 miles, and 12 minutes apart. Lambert happens to be about five years Kacey’s senior.
They also shared a close musical connection early on. Kacey’s grandmother was one of her biggest fans when Musgraves was growing up, and worked as her booking agent. “Mrs. Barbara” as she was known also helped out Miranda Lambert early on, and specifically told Lambert’s parents about auditions in Dallas for the show Nashville Star where Miranda appeared in 2003. That audition eventually led to Miranda’s Lambert’s career taking off.
But it wasn’t some Texas rivalry where Miranda Lambert and Kacey Musgraves found friction. It actually had to do with the song “Mama’s Broken Heart”—a song Miranda Lambert recorded for her 2011 album Four The Record, and released as a single in 2013. The song reached #2 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. It also happens to be written by Kacey Musgraves, along with Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally.
When Kacey Musgraves wrote the song, she was a professional songwriter signed to a publishing deal, but was not yet trying to become a professional singer. She saw “Mama’s Broken Heart” as her potential breakout single. But unbeknownst to her, the song got pitched to Miranda who fell in love with it, and wanted to cut it. Because Lambert was the big star and Musgraves was just a writer, Miranda ended up getting her way, and Musraves ended up making a grudge.
Musgraves recently spoke to Jewly Hight of NPR about her up coming album Middle of Nowhere, and for the first time, spoke in-depth about the feud.
“It was two singers from two nearby, small Texas towns. There’s a lot that comes with that. Then we each take our own different paths, both leading us to Nashville at different times. There was all this excitement behind ‘Mama’s Broken Heart’ for me. It was gonna be my first single and I loved the song so much. I had been a staff writer for years at that point, writing for other people and had finally felt like I was collecting songs that felt like me that I didn’t wanna pitch to anyone else.”
Musgraves also said that she had to consider her co-writers Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally when conceding the single to Miranda. The success of the song really helped launch all three of their careers. And as Musgraves explains, losing “Mama’s Broken Heart” opened up another song to be her breakout, and it helped distinguish Musgraves as not just another country singer from Texas.
“I knew I would have to go back to the drawing board,” Musgraves says. “And ultimately, I’m really glad that I did, because it forced me to write ‘Merry Go Round,’ which ended up making way more sense for me anyways, aesthetically and lyrically, to kick my whole thing off … So in the end, everyone won because I was able to let go of something.”
This all leads to the fact that on the new Kacey Musgraves album, there is a song called “Horses and Divorces” featuring Miranda Lambert. According to Musgraves, one day she was scrolling through Instagram, and saw Miranda riding a horse.
“‘Well, we ain’t friends, but I guess we have two things in common, horses and divorces, that’s for sure. Wait, that could be a really funny song. What if it’s a duet with her? What if I got her to write on it?'” Kacey Musgraves though to herself. “I just randomly reached out to her and I was like, “I know we’ve had our s*** over the years, but listen, we’ve at least got two things in common.'”
Miranda Lambert divorced fellow country star Blake Shelton in 2015, and Kacey Musgraves was once married to songwriter Ruston Kelly, who she divorced in 2020.
Musgraves and Lambert then decided to get Shane McAnally involved in the writing of the song to create a full circle moment, and “Horses and Divorces” was born.
“I think it could be also a micro representation of what I wish that the world would do sometimes, just f****** sit down and poke fun at each other, have a beer and call it a day,” Musgraves says.

I never knew there was any friction between Kacey and Miranda. Horses and Divorces is a catchy title. Their voices are quite different so I’m curious how that will play out on the song.

Maybe Slaid Cleaves will get an uptick to his song, Horses and Divorces…
March 15, 2026 @ 10:54 am
Yes, when the song title was first referenced in this article, I assumed the song was Slaid’s. Then she mentioned Miranda writing on it, so I thought perhaps a slight re-write of the SC song.
Maybe I’ll write a new tune called “Horses, Divorces, and Beer Runs”.

The Slaid Cleaves song is called “Horses,” not “Horses and Divorces,” and I’ve always taken it as a Willie Nelson tribute. I’d say let’s just be a little patient until we hear the song before we decide one song is a rip off or a rewrite of the other.

Just being funny, man.
Not that serious.

Or that funny…

Oh, you got me bud. Really must have added some happiness and satisfaction to your life with that one!

I also never knew these two had a “feud” going on. Probably a lot, lot, lot easier to “forgive and forget” when both artists have come to the realization that their days of being big radio artists are over and both can comfortably settle in to releasing music aimed at their respective fans and move along with the potential “pettiness” associated when trying to climb to the peak of radio cycle.

Kane Brown has a new song out. It’s cute.
And, good for Miranda & Kacey, for ending their feud.
March 15, 2026 @ 6:19 pm
Kane Brown’s new song is pure shit.
March 15, 2026 @ 6:45 pm
: D Come on
March 16, 2026 @ 7:44 am
“Woman” sounds like Huey Lewis’ idea of a country song. Which actually is OK with me because I like Huey’s hits. This is the first song by Kane outside of the non-single “Whiskey Sour” that I’ve listened to willingly more than once.

I’d actually be really interested in a peak Huey Lewis & The News country album. Their cover of Honky Tonk Blues has made a few playlists of mine. I remember Huey saying in an interview that Hank Jr was pretty impressed by it.

I’ve never heard it, but I take Triggers word for it, Odds are he’s right
March 15, 2026 @ 1:22 pm
At least the “feud,” such as it was, had to do with music rather than politics. That NPR piece came up in my Google News feed a few days ago and, not gonna lie, when I saw the headline, I was expecting to read that Miranda leaned red and Kacey leaned blue. Country music — especially mainstream country — needs both of these woman making music that gets listened to.

I am not a big Musgraves fan, saw her live once and found her show boring and contrived. Her great voice did come through though. That being said – her quote in the last paragraph is spot on. Way too many people hold grudges over stupid stuff, life is too short for that.
March 15, 2026 @ 5:00 pm
Next they could co-write a history of their feud in song, complete with the happy ending, and call it “Musgraves’ Broken Heart.”
March 15, 2026 @ 5:25 pm
Miranda count write a Musgraves country song like it was a haiku:
Yee haw
Weed
Maybe not maybe
Ok, I nailed it except for the haiku part.
March 15, 2026 @ 8:38 pm
I heard this was not really a feud at all and the recent posts on social media have been part of Kacey’s tongue-in-cheek promotion for her upcoming album release. You hear different?
March 15, 2026 @ 8:55 pm
There has been strong rumors of this feud for over a decade and there is no reason to believe it’s not true. I think the marketing comes in via finally bringing it out in the open and burying the hatchet, which I don;t think is a bad thing.

Those girls should kiss and make out, I mean make up.
March 15, 2026 @ 10:34 pm
“Mama’s Broken Heart” was one of the most annoying songs of its time. That’s all I’ll ever remember it for.
March 16, 2026 @ 9:17 am
It was a catchy enough song, but one that was played to nasuem. There weren’t to many female hit makers at that point in time on country radio, so I guess they thought they should just play it over and over every hour for a few years to say they play women

The best thing about KM is whatever extent she inspired Ruston Kelly. His songs are top notch and really meaningful to me. It’s not exactly country per se, but sometimes uses elements of country.. like his dad, Tim Kelly, on the steel guitar.
Real sad boy stuff. Emo in the best way, dramatic, and mining religious themes and biblical stories.
KM thought she could handle a real artist I guess but felt more at home sitting on the washing machine.

Had these women ever stepped into the ring my money would have been on Lambert.
