Miranda Lambert Makes Adversities & Heartbreak Her “Champion”

Some of the best Miranda Lambert moments and songs can be found on the stuff she does outside of her regular album cycles. Not to imply there isn’t good stuff to be found on her studio records too. But if you really want to drill down to the best of Ran Ran, you really should check out her other material, beyond the big releases where she’s trying to seed radio with singles, and keep a constituency happy, along with getting her shots in when and where she can.
You can start with Miranda’s work with The Pistol Annies, especially 2018’s Interstate Gospel. This is where some of her best songs can be found. One of the reasons 2016’s The Weight Of These Wings is considered one of Miranda’s best records is because she was afforded the opportunity to stretch her wings since it was a double album, and include songs she otherwise may not find the space to release.
But one of Miranda’s best songs in the last half dozen years was a song that didn’t appear on any record at all. Called “Roots and Wings,” it was first presented as part of a Ram Trucks commercial of all things. We first heard a snippet of the song in the truck spot, and then they finally released the whole thing months later after fans rose a stink and wanted to hear it in full.
Another song that just dropped called “Champion” with Scarlett Burke is also a gem not to be overlooked. Similar to “Roots and Wings,” it’s everything you want from a Miranda Lambert song, backed by banjo and steel guitar, really accentuating what makes Miranda a great country singer instead of hiding it behind pallid, safe production.
A song about how it’s often our adversities, heartbreak, and failures that lead to the insight and inspiration that becomes our greatest triumphs, “Champion” is a song of perseverance, believing in yourself, sticking to your guns, and being thankful for not just your successes, but your disappointments too, because they become your fuel.
“Every time you did me wrong just put more country in these songs … a broken heart is always my champion,” Miranda sings, speaking to the place many of the greatest country music songs come from.
Written by Nicolle Galyon, Jared Gutstadt, Scarlett Burke, and Jeff Peters, “Champion” was released as part of the soundtrack to the scripted podcast rendered in musical form called Make It Up As We Go that was created by Jared Gutstadt and Scarlett Burke, and released October 9th. Miranda Lambert, as well as other country personalities appear during the eight episode run.
“Champion” may not find its way to radio, and won’t be found on a proper Miranda Lambert record. But it’s another worthy entry into the Miranda Lambert canon.

I’ve always despised and dismissed her as the pop-“Country” trash that she is. Not to mention her filthy soul and disgusting behavior.
But, this song is great, and she can sing C(c)ountry music when she tries. I mean to tell you, this song is fantastic.
November 22, 2020 @ 1:55 pm
That’s some high praise right there. Sounds pretty good to me too.
November 22, 2020 @ 2:03 pm
The only thing I’d change, is I’d replace the banjo with a fiddle.
Not a big fan of banjo unless it’s in bluegrass.

I’ve always enjoyed her music, even as an 87-year old man. Hell, even my 101-year old mother-in-law (who died a few years back) enjoyed Lambert’s music; she was the only singer post-1960 that the damned woman would even listen to!
November 22, 2020 @ 11:13 pm
“Not to mention her filthy soul and disgusting behavior.”
What are you on about?
November 23, 2020 @ 12:23 am
What in God’s name are you talking about? She came out of that disgraceful relationship with that spineless Shelton with her head held high. She never bashed that cheating pos and chose to keep the matter private while he and that white trash from L.A. accused her of misgivings which were untrue. She dodged a bullet and came out ahead. Country music stands behind her. Blake is rarely even recognized anymore.
November 23, 2020 @ 5:55 pm
The only disgrace in that relationship was her. She had no reason to bash him because she was cheater in the relationship. Hmm, I wonder what happened to her tour manager Ryan? I’m sure his wife has a lot to say about Miranda. I’m sure Anderson East has a lot to say about her too. What about Staci Felker? What misgivings did they accuse her of? How exactly did she come out ahead? She married someone that cheated on his fiancée and got another girl pregnant. She supports him financially and pimps him out shirtless for cheap promo. Who exactly in country music stands behind her? Aldean the cheater? Blake outsells her in sales and sold out tours. I enjoyed seeing Maren Morris win over her. I wonder why she never wins any fan voted awards. Maybe, if her vile fans supported her instead of stalking her ex and his fiancée she would win one. It’s sad how cruel and miserable you are that you trash people you don’t even know. You do the same thing on twitter.

Pot…….kettle…….just sayin.
November 23, 2020 @ 5:56 pm
Okay. As someone who is a fan of Gwen, Blake AND Miranda, I was gonna refrain, but, WTF?
Y’all are worse than supermarket tabloids, angry teenagers and feuding Twitter stans all rolled into one.
They got divorced. They found partners who are a much better match for them. All their careers are going just fine. It was FIVE YEARS AGO.
Bitter, nasty and negative is no way to go through life, get over it already!
November 23, 2020 @ 11:51 pm
What the absolute f**k? Hey I think you’re on the wrong site. Dlisted is what you’re looking for. Go on over there and spin your yarn. They get loonier and loonier. Good song.
November 24, 2020 @ 6:46 am
Blake, is that you? Nice potty mouth bumpkin. Regretting your choices?
November 23, 2020 @ 1:16 am
So, honky, we can add Lambert to the short list of “artists” you like. That makes 2, along with the boy band midland (who you have laughingly praised in the past, don’t deny it). What has been your favorite album of 2020 so far?
November 23, 2020 @ 11:24 am
Billy boy,
Why would I deny liking a band that has yet to release a bad song to radio? Yes, they are metrosexual men posing as downtrodden rednecks, but their music is great.
I don’t like Miranda, as clearly stated in my original comment. This one song is fantastic.
I haven’t bought a new album since 2008, if I remember correctly.
November 23, 2020 @ 10:44 am
Honky – I cannot decide which half of your comment has the most hyperbole.
November 23, 2020 @ 11:31 am
Using the word ‘fantastic’ is probably hyperbolic, if used to describe any music released in the 21st century. Thanks for pointing that out.
Please allow me to officially replace ‘fantastic’ with ‘very good’ in my original comment here.
November 22, 2020 @ 1:56 pm
Miranda has a beautiful soul and heart for others including animals.
November 22, 2020 @ 3:47 pm
I love all her music she is one of the best out there and to me she is a baddass singer/songwriter she can sing the shit out of gunpowder & lead her most memorable performance on stage was Tin Man IMO.
November 22, 2020 @ 4:38 pm
This song is great. Roots and wings is also one of my favorites of hers. Twotw is also my fav album of her. I love that she feels comfortable to experiment like she did in wildcard but also remain rootsy with other songs. Cant wait to see what she puts out next
November 23, 2020 @ 9:13 am
I misread that as “robots and wings.” ^
November 22, 2020 @ 5:04 pm
One of my favourite Miranda performances is on Dave Cobb’s album. Forget what it’s called.
November 22, 2020 @ 7:10 pm
Sweet by and by. Yes, that is a good song.
November 22, 2020 @ 6:04 pm
“Sweet By and By” should also be included in Miranda’s catalog of well-done songs that didn’t make it to one of her own studio albums.
November 22, 2020 @ 9:10 pm
I love listening to Miranda, in my car, in my house & I turn her up while I’m soaking up the sun. Anything posted about her I stop everything & read it. I love that she has an animal organization,
they are my weakness too. She is so happy now with purty new hubby. She did TRADE UP!.. U keep doin u Sis & pls keep the music & awesome videos coming. Cant wait till concerts will start up again. I’m in TN, close to Nashville, so next time u come to Nashville Me & hubby are gonna be in the front row. Lol. ❤✌????????
November 22, 2020 @ 11:30 pm
I’d be a miranda fan if only for the lyrics —hers and the outsides and cowrites. add to that one of ,perhaps ,the most uniquely recognizable and capable COUNTRY voices out there and she’s hard to beat . sierra ferel , lauren macietti ( I know ..spelling ) both fall into this camp , I think
if I have any ”issue’ with her it is only musically . many of her tracks never seem to achieve liftoff …..they often lack dynamics. nice production in the track posted … but the track goes nowhere musically . similarly her latest single ‘ settlin’ down ‘ suffers from the same lack of dynamics , IMO , but is redeemed , again , by the lyric . anyone but miranda …..and that song doesn’t get played on mainstream radio .
i’d take this over in- your- face-mountain-from-a-molehill -over-produced -trendy radio stuff anytime . but only so much of it .
November 23, 2020 @ 3:35 pm
Albert, you’ve put your finger on it exactly. Lambert always seems to be a little disconnected from herself. Maybe she’s an introvert who’s been told over and over to be an extrovert, but she can’t hide it.
November 23, 2020 @ 5:12 pm
“” Miranda …..you go climb up on that rooftop with your sexiest short dress , that beautiful hair shining in nature’s spotlight and that ‘you- know- you-want- me’ smile and you start yelling at the top of your lungs ” I’M AN INTROVERT, I’M AN INTROVERT ” and don’t you STOP yelling it ’til folks believe you ”.
hmm….dunno about that Cornman . if she is an introvert ,the woman sure goes out of her way to fool us .
November 26, 2020 @ 5:04 pm
Actually, I’ve read articles in which her mom has said that until about the fifth grade,Miranda didn’t speak in school.
November 23, 2020 @ 10:47 am
Love it !!!

We heard you the first time. No one made you the thread police.
November 23, 2020 @ 7:32 pm
Dude. I speak up like every 100th time I read something I object to here. Most of the time I just shake my head and go back to listening to the song samples.
November 23, 2020 @ 8:20 pm
Love this song. In 2016, Loretta Lynn said that she thought her and Miranda were kind of the same type of singers. I agree. In my opinion, Miranda is the most talented singer songwriter in country music right now. To anyone who has never heard it, go listen to ” Love Your Memory” written solely by a twenty year old Miranda.
November 23, 2020 @ 10:12 pm
Another good song from her is ” Scars”
November 24, 2020 @ 2:27 am
I’m just here for the celebrity gossip.
November 24, 2020 @ 11:19 am
Good song…..Nice rack.
November 24, 2020 @ 7:21 pm
Your comment posted twice, was what he was saying.
November 26, 2020 @ 9:24 pm

November 27, 2020 @ 3:52 pm
I am hoping for a new pistol annies album next year or a new ashley monroe album
December 3, 2020 @ 9:58 am
I’ll be playing it. Great song.
December 3, 2020 @ 10:15 am
Is this the Cobra?
December 3, 2020 @ 10:44 am
The only difference me and the Cobra is that I bat left.
December 3, 2020 @ 11:15 am
After Blake bad mouthed the old country guys I’ve had no use for him…I don’t care about his personal life
