Nearing 93, Willie Nelson Is Still Chasing His Dreams

When you’ve expended all of the plaudits and accolades due to a career that’s nearing the century mark in tenure, you’re resigned to only one word left to describe greatness:
Willie.
When Willie Nelson took the stage at the Luck Reunion in the little Western town that he built on the outskirts of Austin on Thursday night, March 19th, it was the first announced show he’d played in half a year—since Farm Aid on September 20th, 2025 in Minneapolis.
Granted, Willie did play a surprise show at a benefit in Houston in November, and a private potluck at Luck a couple nights before. But ahead of the Luck, TX appearance, Willie had been mostly out of the public eye for an extended period, and there weren’t any future tour dates on his schedule either. The lack of public appearances or calendar dates had some wondering if Willie might finally be hanging it up or scaling back ahead of his 93rd birthday on April 29th.
But of course, that’s not the case at all. As Willie has said himself, he wants to die on stage. And he very well might fulfill that dream in the end. But for now, he still has other dreams to chase.
As has been customary over the last few years, Willie Nelson used the opportunity of his Luck Reunion appearance to announce a new album. On May 29th, Willie Nelson will deliver his 79th studio release called Dream Chaser. It’s not a tribute album like many of his recent releases, but one that will include more original music, including six songs co-written by Willie. Once again Buddy Cannon will be the producer.
Other notables about the upcoming album include a song Willie co-wrote with Bob Dylan called “I Can’t Read Your Mind.” Bobby Tomberlin also co-writes four songs on the album. There’s also a song co-written by Willie’s long-time harmonica player Mickey Raphael who of course also appears on the album, and a rendition of “Developing My Pictures” originally recorded by George Jones.
In the title track released ahead of the album (listen below), Willie Nelson directly addresses why he still insists on releasing albums, writing songs, and playing shows. He talks about how songs still come to him in the night, “Faster than I could write it down…”
Willie also sings,
You may not understand it
Why we live with the sacrifice
But it’s worth every mile
To get to sing for a while
Truth is I’ve done it all for free
Always rhymes to be makin’
When you’re a dream chaser like me
Willie Nelson has also announced a handful of new tour dates in the mid Atlantic region come late April. And there’s even strong rumors that his annual Outlaw Fest will once again be embarking on the road come summer.
At The Luck Reunion, Willie Nelson at times gulped for air, took phrases off from singing, sometimes struggled to make much more than strumming noises on his guitar Trigger. Then at other times, Willie would sing out with curious energy, or blaze a brilliant run on that old nylon string guitar.
But you don’t go to see Willie for the blazing musicianship or soaring vocals. He’s nearing 93 years old. You go to see Willie because you never know when it’s going to be the last time, for you or anyone else. You go to see him because he’s the patron saint of country music, and of the American dream. You go to see Willie because he’s a living piece of history. You go to see Willie because he’s Willie.

I’m thrilled for the new album and hopeful for Outlaw Festival dates. Last year was the first outside the pandemic year we haven’t seen Willie in concert since 2014: 13 Outlaw Music Festivals, 4 Farm Aids, and one 4th of July Picnic.
It just wasn’t in the cards (we only went to one concert last year).

Today on Spotify it said Elizabeth Cook had a new release. The release is on her spotify page as a new single. It is called “I still think of you”. It is not her singing. It is not her style of music. I am pretty sure it is A.I. Elizabeth Cook is credited as the performer, but all the other credits is someone/something called Yajid Universe.

Ugh. These AI bastards.
March 23, 2026 @ 3:28 pm
I’ve heard several so called “new releases by ****. ” There may be hints of that singers voice and a few other familiar voices of other artists , but it is NOT him/her.. I can’t stand to hear it, but am glad that I can decipher it. Id like to know if the artist that is being AI ified is on board with this? I’d think they’d have to give permission to release this crap under the artist_s name. I’m kinda disappointed in this artists that are doing or going along with this AI crap.
March 23, 2026 @ 4:19 pm
No, the artists are not on board with this at all. They are victims of it. These AI grifters are able to manipulate the streaming services to get these track and albums populated on their accounts, and then it takes a lot of effort on their part to get them removed.

Willie Nelson is one of a kind there’s very few who rivals his greatness most notable are Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, & Waylon Jennings. But, even they in a way fail in comparison to Willie and that isn’t a knock on them it just goes to show how great of a musical icon Willie Nelson truly is. I hope Willie does die how he hope’s he will…on stage. It be a fitting ending to his life which is already the stuff of legends.

I saw Willie about ten years ago touring with Casey Musgraves and Alison Krauss and Union Station and quite honestly, even Willie played only 45 minutes, he played with more energy and vigor than everyone else combined. So happy for him.
There are really only two artists I can think about who are still touring in their 90s, Willie Nelson and Frankie Valli (and Buddy Guy is about to be there too), and while I cant be critical of anyone still going strong in their 90s, those two performers are not the same. Go willie!
March 23, 2026 @ 3:01 pm
Oh, Buddy Guy, is head & shoulders above Willie Nelson, both in performance, and energy.
This is not a knock on Willie.
But, not going to let you bring Buddy down.
Had the great opportunity to see Buddy twice, in the last two years.
A phenomenal musician.
March 23, 2026 @ 3:58 pm
Buddy Guy is the goods!!! Seen him many times, he’s a legend around here.
March 23, 2026 @ 4:39 pm
: D Oh, yeah …
And, Greg Guy, is pretty awesome as well
March 23, 2026 @ 7:04 pm
For sure. He’s just not 90 yet….
March 23, 2026 @ 1:40 pm
Trigger, wasn’t there a rumor that Daniel Lanois was doing another album with Willie too?
Fingers crossed that happens.
March 23, 2026 @ 2:47 pm
I have not heard that particular rumor, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true. I haven’t heard anything specific about it for sure.
March 23, 2026 @ 3:22 pm
That would be amazing. I grew up with my dad playing Teatro in the car all the time
March 23, 2026 @ 4:25 pm
It does not appear that Willie Nelson “has said himself” that he wants to die on stage. (A least Google–whether in its standard or AI format–does not come up with that.)
Seems more like a conclusion that one might draw, based on his actions, but I’d let Willie speak for himself.
March 23, 2026 @ 7:06 pm
IIRC Col. Bruce Hampton did actually die on stage during the encore of his celebrity birthday concert
March 23, 2026 @ 10:01 pm
That’s not exactly a rarity. Wikipedia has a whole entry called “List of entertainers who died during a performance” (which encompasses deaths from any cause, natural or otherwise) and lists what appear to be thousands, starting with the French actor Molière, in 1673 to Charlie Kirk in October 2025. Singers and musicians listed include the one you mentioned and also Johnny “Guitar” Watson, David Olney and Jo-El Sonnier among many others–though Sonnier died after walking off the stage.
Willie certainly COULD go that way–though given the relatively few hours a year that he spends actually performing, it’s more likely that it will happen when he’s not in front of an audience.
March 24, 2026 @ 6:43 am
Willie’s sets run 45 – 60 minutes. Last year there were 36 Outlaw Dates, Farm Aid, 4th of July Picnic, Real Luck SXSW, and 12 solo dates. 41 dates (that I can think of off my head), 41 hours on the stage performing. I know Farm Aid he kicks off the event with a prayer with Native Americans at 11 am and does press events all day.
Those “relatively few hours” is more than most artists who play an hour and a half some 20 dates a year.

Is the Bobby Whitlock credited on track 2 Bobby Whitlock of Derek and the Dominoes?
March 24, 2026 @ 5:25 am
I always appreciate how you cover every album that comes out by this amazing legend. Very very grateful. Thank you for a constantly wonderful site to visit each day.
March 24, 2026 @ 7:11 am
Thanks for reading JD.
March 24, 2026 @ 7:00 pm
Haha, 79th studio release. Many of us will be lucky if we live as many years.
March 24, 2026 @ 10:29 pm
Yeah, it seems like it’s required a lining up of the stars, a four-leaf-clover, hitting an inside straight and an act of Congress to get Clint Black or Travis Tritt to go in and make a new studio album for the last 20-some years, but Willie just goes and does it like it’s part of his job.
Maybe those ’90s superstars can’t take putting out an album that doesn’t make an impact on the chart.
March 24, 2026 @ 10:49 pm
Considering all the crap we’re given, from new and old artists alike, I would rather hear one good album every tenth year, instead we’re treated with a flood of mediocre releases containing a good song or two, at best.
The problem with prolific artists like Willie, George Strait, and Jimmy Buffett, to name a few, is that the fillers outweights the killers by far. Even old Hag suffered from this after his 60’s/early 70’s heydays on Capitol.
On the other hand we got those artists whose debut is so good that it’s impossible to follow up without delivering a let-down (Guy Clark, Gary Stewart, Paul Siebel, Steve Earle, Clint Black – and in my opinion, Garth Brooks, among the few.)
March 28, 2026 @ 7:08 am
It is my theory on why the HOF hasn’t inducted Clint Black yet.
